Little Bi Peep (2013)
Missed the mark too many times
Young woman that's basically lost in life. Works the counter at a porn shop while dressing in sexy outfits like Little Bo Peep. Also goes to a club and picks up a different date (Sometimes men. Sometimes women) each time but gives a different bio of herself to each one. Even though she and all her dates go to the same club, not one of them catches on to her lies or that she only dates each for one night? The rest of the time, is home doing nothing constructive.
The movie is the creation of Anna Shields who also plays the lead. There are opportunities or maybe they were actual attempts at comedy but it misses the laughs. They try to garner sympathy for the main character but again misses the mark. It seems like there are dramatic moments to draw you into the story but once again, a total miss. In addition there is much that doesn't make sense.
This could have been interesting. This could have been funny. Even the ending could have been something. Instead we get nothing.
Dorei-sen (2010)
Simply Excellent
This is based on a story from Oniroku Dan who wrote many novels and screenplays with an S&M theme. Here the story centers on an author of S&M themed novels (maybe a little biographical? Or maybe not!) that also is involved with a slave ship. The ship is just a boat in Tokyo harbor where demonstrations of S&M as well as auctions for an encounter with the slave. But the slave ship is not the main focus. The author has a sexy assistant although they mainly tease each other. The author and assistant then travel to a inn where he had a relationship tho not sexual, with the innkeeper's wife. The wife has gotten involved with another man who likes to play S&M games. That's as much as I will give away.
The characters are interesting and you get to know enough about all of them so the story makes sense. This is a Pink Eiga film so there is nudity and sex scenes as well as S&M. They are a part of the story and characters. Some are very erotic but the rest of the story is more interesting.
Kyoko Aizome plays the innkeeper's wife. She was also a well-known AV actress including what is considered the first (though censored) Japanese hardcore film, Daydream in 1981. She is very good in this film as is the rest of the cast.
I really enjoyed this film. You don't have to be a fan of Pink Eiga to enjoy it. There is much more to it. Give it a watch!
Sticky: A (Self) Love Story (2016)
Doesn't know if it's a documentary or comedy. Fails at both.
This movie is 72 minutes long but could have been 20 without losing anything important. A number of people are interviewed or asked questions but many have nothing constructive to say. Some things probably were supposed to be funny but I never laughed once.
The central theme is masturbation. For a bit they bring a discussion of porn into it. Very briefly get into sex toys. I think they tend to stick to things that can get a rise out of people. (Did you catch my puns?!!!) Instead of offering much constructive or actually educational.
There were a few things interesting when they went thru the historical view of masturbation. Other than that very little. You could turn it off after the first 20 or 25 minutes and not miss anything.
Burû firumu no onna (1969)
Not great but interesting
A man in debt from a bad investment has a large loan due but can't pay it. The loanshark offers to extend the loan in exchange for sex with the man's wife. He says no but the wife agrees. Further to extend the loan by several years agrees to sex with the loanshark's mentally disturbed son. After that the wife is hit by a car on her way home. The daughter is trying to make money towards paying off the loan. The husband finally commits suicide and the daughter then works harder to make money to revenge against the loanshark. The rest of the movie is towards that end which I won't give away.
This movie, Blue Film Woman is from 1969. It was reissued in 2020 with several new songs and taken from the original 1969 35mm print which survived.
This movie has some significance as it is the first Pink Eiga to be filmed entirely in color. Prior they were either black & white or only partially in color. They do make great use of color too.
The film itself is just okay. The cast was good. The story sometimes drags a bit. As a Pink Eiga film there is nudity and sex scenes but they are not erotic or explicit at all. Those scenes are directly related to the story. Some are rather disturbing. The ending didn't make complete sense until I gave a bit of thought. Even then I'm not sure. So that left me unfulfilled.
So I call this an interesting film with some social commentary built into the story. They just have a couple of scenes that went on a little long. Some scenes while important to the story and main character just were boring. A little dialogue might have lifted that. Not sure I would recommend to most people. A few may like it though.
WFAA Interviews the Ladybirds, 'The World's First Only Topless Girl Band' (2018)
Short but interesting
At one minute and two seconds there is not much to this video. It's an old interview from January 1968. You can find this video on YouTube.
This is the American Ladybirds topless band. There was also a Danish Ladybirds topless band and there is an interview with them found elsewhere.
Interesting to find out the origin of the band as well as their musical experience before the band. Plus you get to learn (Hey you need to watch the video! No Spoilers!) what they all did before the band.
It was interesting to learn a few things about them. No they were not topless during the interview but pictures and videos of that can be found online. Wish they would have asked more in depth about their music and instruments (I'm a musician) but this is all we get. They made a topless appearance playing music in the recent 2024 documentary about Carol Doda called "Carol Doda Topless at the Condor" as well as "The Wild, Wild World of Jayne Mansfield" from 1968.
Nureta yokujo: Tokudashi nijuichi nin (1974)
Entertaining Pink Eiga
The story focuses on a man that recruits girls for sex and to work as strippers. The stage show and backstage shenanigans play a part in the story. There's a couple of connected side stories involving a few other characters. Much centers around Asakusa Rokku which is a Theater Street that includes some strip clubs.
I didn't think I would enjoy this film and it had a bit of a slow start. Still, there was enough depth to the main characters that it made it interesting. The acting was good but nothing award winning.
This is a Pink Eiga film so there is plenty of nudity (per 1970's Japan censorship) and a few sex scenes. In most cases it's part of the story. There is a couple of funny moments but it's really a drama. The ending kind of wrapped everything together.
Worth a watch.
Doreizuma (1976)
Naomi Tani makes this a decent watch
Once again the IMDB Storyline synopsis is wrong. It's a wife who borrows money from her former chauffeur that she had mistreated that's now successful (there's no butler in this movie at all!) for her husband's business. In addition to the husband she lives with her sister-in-law that hates her and her elderly invalid father. The wife is later raped by some American soldiers and then contemplates suicide but the ex-chauffer kidnaps her and subjects her to various S&M activities as payback.
Naomi Tani is excellent as usual and especially her facial expressions often do more than any dialogue. The rest of the cast also is very good.
This Roman Porno is not very explicit. The S&M scenes are fairly mild. It is the characters and story that make the movie work. You really cannot predict where the next scene will go. The ending was totally unexpected although makes sense when you think of earlier scenes.
While not the best Naomi Tani film it still was very good. Well worth watching.
Quiz Show (1994)
Entertaining if not very factual
This very loosely follows the Quiz Show scandal of the 1950's. Most of the names are correct but the actual chronological order as well as details have been totally changed. A few important or related people were completely left out. Still it makes for an entertaining movie. Watch the American Experience episode on the Quiz Show scandal if you want the real story.
The cast is all first-rate. The story flows so smooth the movie seems much shorter than the two hours it actually is. This of course takes place in the 1950's and they avoided the mistake of modernizing as some filmmakers do.
I have watched this movie a number of times. Originally on VHS video tape, then DVD and finally streaming. Still enjoy it.
Hana to hebi: Hakui nawa dorei (1986)
Solid entry in the Flower & Snake series
This is the fourth entry in the Flower and Snake series although as with the others the only thing in common is the title. The characters and story are different.
A dentist and his assistant chloroform, put in bondage and then sexually assault patients they find attractive. Then he meets a student of one of his patients he becomes infatuated with and adds some torture to the mix as he intends to make her a permanent slave.
There have been a number of Pink Eiga films that use a dentist as the main character, especially the Daydream movies from 1964 & 1981. This is a different take.
The cast is excellent especially Ran Masaki and Minako Ogawa who is outstanding and appeared in the previous Flower and Snake movie. There are of course the prerequisite sex scenes and nudity but nothing too explicit. The last scene being very erotic. Everything is softcore of course. The focus is more on the bondage and fetishes although in this entry they are woven into the story and characters. A couple of continuity errors but nothing major.
While not as strong as the first movie, this is still very good. Definitely a cut above the second & third. It stands on its own. You needn't have watched the previous Flower and Snake films.
Hana to hebi: Shiiku-hen (1986)
Mediocre effort in the Flower & Snake series
A rich man rejects doing business with another man. The rejected man then kidnaps the rich man's wife. The plan is to train her thru S&M and make porn videos with her. Then will offer the videos to the rich husband for a high price or else release them to the public to cause embarrassment.
This is the third film in the Flower & Snake movie series although no characters or story are related. This film is weak on S&M compared to the previous two. The shibari is more simplistic. Even the sex scenes I found rather boring. But there are of course several fetishes included that were the more interesting parts of the film.
Minako Ogawa who plays the female lead was excellent and extremely attractive but unfortunately the script was weak. The story played very well at the beginning but then the entire middle section was just sex & fetish scenes being played out. Little about the characters or plot.
I only recommend this one for real fans of the Nikkatsu Roman Porno films. Otherwise you'll probably be bored.
Hana to hebi: Jigoku-hen (1985)
Just OK & no relation to 1974 original
First, it must be said that neither the story, theme or characters are related in any way to the original 1974 Flower & Snake film and novel by Oniroku Dan. He has a credit in this film only because they used the title.
A spoiled step-daughter that is part of a small female gang pretends to be kidnapped so the stepmother will bring 3 million yen to pay off her gambling debt. The gang then kidnaps the stepmom and proceeds to assault her. The Yakuza arrives to get paid and finds more value in further assaults to the stepmom and then the stepdaughter as well. Turns out one of the female gang is also an expert in S&M and even has a suitcase full of toys.
This shouldn't share the title with the original. It misses all the strong points of the original. The story is just a means to have scenes of sex, bondage and various (I won't give it away) fetishes. All softcore and simulated of course. When those scenes begin in earnest its like they keep checking off one fetish and then another until the two final scenes begin. The sex scenes I didn't find very erotic or interesting. Nor were they important to the story like the original.
The acting of the two female leads are just okay. Often not showing emotion when expected. Just not making it believable.
This still was watchable but I did find myself get bored at times. Had to hit fast-forward a few times. Rated 6 out of 10 is probably being generous. I only recommend this movie to the real fans of Roman Porno.
Hana to hebi (1974)
A Classic among the Roman Porno films
This movie along with Wife to Be Sacrificed were the standard for almost every Roman Porno film that came after. Based on the Oniroku Dan S&M novel, Flower and Snake. This was the first Roman Porno to have an S&M theme.
The story is a 30 year old man, still living with his mother who operates an adult novelty (magazines, photos & toys) store. The man's boss asks him to kidnap and train his wife who has been denying him during their marriage. While the man is inexperienced except for seeing his mother taking photo shoots obliges.
Keep in mind that although this film falls under the Nikkatsu studio's Roman Porno, that means romantic porno (not the western definition of porno), falls under the Pink Eiga movie category and only softcore at that. And in the 1970's Japanese film censorship was very strict. This film does have rope bondage and it is very real including suspension. There is also enemas and other things but is never shown on camera. All including sex scenes are strictly simulated.
The film itself often is rebuked by a western audience. But it had its place within Japanese (not mainstream) culture of the time. The bondage, sex scenes and fetishes are definitely part of the story. The characters and their development would make no sense without it.
The acting by the entire cast is first-rate. Naomi Tani, who was known as the "Queen Of S&M" is exceptional as usual. She would famously only appear in films with an S&M theme. The story moves along and nothing is just filler. I still think Wife to Be Sacrificed which was later the same year to be a better film. Still, this is outstanding.
This is one of five films I recommend to people that want to be introduced to Roman Porno or Pink Eiga films. I highly recommend it.
Chikan densha: Iyarashii kôi (1993)
Fantastic Hisayasu Satõ tho not his usual
A young man videotapes women being molested on trains. That's where he meets a young woman who travels trains. Together they connect thru the separate paths of their lives.
This is part of the Molester Train series of which there are many (over a hundred) although much darker as the earlier films were often more lighthearted. There are several scenes of women being molested on trains but it is not the main focus of the story.
While being a Pink Eiga film and directed by Satõ there actually is no explicit sex, minimal nudity and virtually no violence. What you do get is two very interesting characters and their lives. There are several dramatic moments that stand out.
Yumika Hayashi plays the female lead and is exceptionally good. For those unfamiliar with her, she was one of the most prolific AV (adult video) actresses as well as acting in Pink & mainstream movies & TV winning several awards. Several documentaries about her life and career were made.
This is not a normal Hisayasu Satõ film. But it is one of his best. Highly recommended.
Elvis Presley: From the Beginning to the End (2004)
Worst Elvis Documentary
First, for a subject (Elvis Presley) that has been extremely well documented, they either skip many facts or just make them up. They mention Bob Neal became manager but skip the fact Scotty Moore was actually Elvis's first manager. And what's with calling Scotty Moore "Winfield?" Yes it's his real first name, but the entire Elvis world knows him as Scotty. They also get most of the story leading to the first Sun studio session wrong as if they just made it up. There is even a few pictures on screen that are wrong.
There is virtually no actual Presley music, probably to avoid paying for licensing. Just several second snippets occasionally. There's also film footage shown at times seemingly unrelated to the narration. Like a TV news broadcast from 1984 (the date is in the screen) when the narration is about playing the Louisiana Hayride. Huh?
With so many excellent Presley documentaries you can skip this one.
Mofuku-zuma: Teimô nawa-dorei (1993)
Very dark character study
A prostitute that specializes in cosplay meets her client regularly for S&M sessions. She claims to have lost a baby. He claims his wife committed suicide because of playing S&M games with him. Through flashbacks and their somewhat regular S&M sessions we learn more about each.
This a very dark movie for Director Hisayasu Satõ. There is more than the normal number of sex scenes most involving bondage tho about average or less for nudity. There also is pubic-shaving, paddling, whipping, dildos, and choking although it's all pretty mild as it is softcore.
Noriko Akikawa is excellent in the lead role.
I will say it sometimes slows down but only when it's to develop the characters or story further. Flashbacks are lighted pink or blue. What made this film work is wanting to learn more and follow the two lead characters. The sex and bondage scenes are definitely part of the story so not to be skipped. But as I mentioned before I didn't think it very explicit. So don't be put off by it.
While not one of Satõ's best, it is one of his better efforts.
Euphoria (2011)
Only the first two of the six episodes make any sense
This is a review of the hentai anime. Not the TV series! This is an anime which means animated but still for adults only. This is based on a virtual novel you play like a game.
The premise is a group of high school students, one male, the others female are locked in a facility. In order to be released, the male, for each round must choose one of the female students and have sex with them. He will be told what "openings" of the chosen female will be used, how many times and how hard. Things such as bondage and worse may be used.
The first episode is interesting. The second was just a few sex scenes (animation of course) with little story development. The third episode was just boring. Even the sex scenes were boring. The last three episodes each consecutively made less and less sense. The sixth or last episode seemed to be more like an alternative version of the fifty episode.
The most extreme scenes are very brief. The extreme scenes in the second episode lasts only 20 seconds. There are short extreme scenes, often just still images especially in the first two episodes that do not actually exist in the story arc over the rest of the episodes. So really the story over the entire run doesn't make a lot of sense. The dialogue and sex scenes seemed to be written by an 11 year old boy who has watched too much porn but has yet to take a sex education class in school. Most of the dialogue is just ridiculous.
I can't recommend this anime. There are many much better to watch.
(Nama) tôchô ripôto: Chiwa (1993)
This will make your brain work harder
First, completely ignore the story summary listed for this movie. It's not even close.
A woman that works wiretapping people and had a relationship with a married man (that also wiretapped people) who seems to be comatose after a car accident. There is a belief the man had some ability with spirit photography. Additionally there are videos called KORIN sold and the woman receives one and plays it. I don't want to give anymore away as that's the point of watching.
Director Hisayasu Satõ let's the story unfold a little at a time. This being a pink Eiga it does contain the prerequisite sex scenes but I didn't find them particularly erotic and neither did they slow the movie down. Often they are part of the story. Kiyomi Ito plays the lead and is excellent as usual.
I found this movie to be an excellent mystery. It throws in the psychic abilities and connections which adds depth to the story. You had to think to understand where it was going along the way. Not one of Satõ's best but a very good watch.
As a side note: In one character's home there is a drum throne (a seat for playing drums) and it just kind of seemed out of place. Not sure why it was used.
Macabre: The Golden Age of Italian Exploitation (2009)
It's a documentary without much documentation
The first half (only 6 minutes) is mostly how they made the 1980 film Macabre from creating the script to the lead actress's role in making the movie. I haven't seen the movie and don't care to after seeing this so I will call it slightly interesting.
The second half is about Italian exploitation cinema in general. Most is about the film Cannibal Holocaust and making exploitation movies in Italy with Director Ruggero Deodato. This required subtitles (which doesn't match what he is saying) to translate Mr. Deodato's broken english.
We also see every so often Director Joe Dante talk about Italian exploitation.
This video is only 11 minutes, 22 seconds with the credits. Still, I learned almost nothing about Italian exploitation cinema which was why I watched it.
Kanzen-naru shiiku: Ai no 40-nichi (2001)
Disturbing but very interesting
This is the second in a 7 movie series using a similar theme. A middle-aged man kidnaps a 17 year old (as in the first movie, played by an actress in her 20's) to make his lover and companion. This has the lead actress telling her story after the fact to a therapist. I found this one much more disturbing than the first.
This has a much more somber mood. The acting performances were not nearly as strong as those in the first and lacked the same chemistry. They didn't show much emotion even when you would expect it.
I will say there was a better sense of realism than seen in similar Hollywood movies. Small details like wrist abrasions from handcuffs and using the bathroom. A stark contrast between Japanese & western films.
The story and characters I did find very engaging. Even tho very disturbing I felt drawn in to how the relationship develops. Disturbing but very interesting film.
Kanzen-naru shiiku (1999)
Surprising film
This is the first of a series of 7 movies that share a similar theme.
A man kidnaps a high school student to train (educate) to love him. Simple story.
The two leads are excellent and there is definite chemistry between them that has a lot to do with making the story work. The direction is interesting in that it's done as if we are almost secretly watching.
You would think & expect a lot of nudity but you would be disappointed. In fact the female lead is seen naked only for very brief times and at times she is naked but it is not explicit. Don't expect any explicit sex scenes either.
There are a few supporting characters that are played mostly for a little comic relief and to add some depth beyond the small apartment where most of the movie takes place.
This is an example of what a movie can be done with a small budget. The story, direction and acting made an excellent film.
Dan Oniroku kurokami nawa fujin (1982)
Decent Pink Eiga tho less pink than usual
The IMDB story synopsis is not exactly accurate. Yes a husband has gambling debts but he's not exactly trying to force it all on his wife.
This is a Roman Pink Eiga film. And written by Oniroku Dan. But be aware, there is little bondage/S&M featured. Yes there are sex scenes and nudity but not the primary focus. If you are looking for that, this film will disappoint you. Instead there is more story and the main character (wife) is much more developed for a Oniroku Dan story. I found it very interesting. Even the ending is not what I expected.
The acting is generally first-rate. Obviously a low budget.
Honestly, it was not what I expected but was a pleasant surprise. Not fantastic but enjoyable.
Ongaku (1972)
Interesting but tends to drag on too long
A young woman sees a psychiatrist as she can't enjoy sex and doesn't hear music. Much of the story is her telling the doctor of her experiences and some free associations which includes a sexual experience with her brother.
This is from prolific director Yasuzô Masumura although not one of his better efforts. Some scenes just drag on needlessly. While you might find this movie as a pink Eiga, it really isn't. There is some nudity but not much even for 1972 Japan. The sex scenes are not very explicit or erotic. They could have easily cut 20 minutes or more which would have drastically improved the pacing.
I have this a 6 out of 10 which is very generous.
Waver (2001)
There's a lot shoved into 3 short episodes except a story
The Japanese version with English subtitles is what my review is based on. There's an English dubbed track as well but I didn't use it. Mine is completely uncensored and explicit though of course animated not live action.
Man wins a prize and he and his girlfriend go to a mansion as part of it. After staying the night and having breakfast they get separated. He ventures thru the rooms of the mansion, often getting into sex or other games alternating with concern for where his girlfriend is.
Included within the three episodes is sex, anal, oral, bondage, whipping, dildos, candle wax, fisting, pissing, enemas, shitting, breast milk, Jack Daniels vodka (no, they don't really make it) and a few other things I leave you to discover. Should mention there are things that the character's response to is very muted to what would be in real life. Most of the sex or bondage scenes are fairly short in order to fit everything into less than 90 minutes of the three (28 minutes each) episodes total.
The story sometimes is preposterous. At times it jumps a bit without explanation so then doesn't make sense. I don't think they cared about the story except as a means to the next sex scene. The story does progress and there is an ending to the plot. I actually liked the ending. Some of the dialogue tho is ridiculous.
Still, I will say it was mostly interesting. I wanted to see what happens next. I just wish the story was more coherent.
The Orgy Machine (1972)
Had potential but they ruined it
Note: Most of the hardcore scenes were from the previously released "I Want You!" From 1970. Included porn Stars of 1972 include John Holmes, Jan Davis, Pete Dawson and Annette Michael. Uschi Digard appears in a strictly softcore capacity.
The story is Dr. Werner von Sperm has invented an Orgy machine that makes people want to have sex. (Yeah like a machine is needed for that!) He focuses his machine at various couples and threesomes and they instantly get horny and start having sex.
The sex scenes are often interrupted by Dr. Werner von Sperm's narration or him staring directly into the camera boasting of his success. So any excitement you might have watching a scene is lost when seeing his ugly mug. The scenes themselves are sometimes boring, sometimes above average. Some of the money shots are separate footage from the actual scene. Some scenes don't have a money shot at all.
What could have been a good early 1970's classic porn is instead a poor example.
Uwakizuma: Chijokuzeme (1992)
Intelligent drama
The story is centered in the Bedroom (also known as the sleeping room) but it's really on the Kyoko character who is videotaping a daily diary. I would explain further but that then gives too much away.
This is one of Hisayasu Satõ's more thoughtful films. You do need to pay attention. This is of course a Pink Eiga film so there is nudity and a few sex scenes but they are far from erotic although they often are part of the story. There is a bit of a surprise ending.
One noteworthy item of this movie is the Mr. Takano character that is played by Issei Sagawa. He was a man that murdered a woman in France, had sex with her dead body and ate much of her body. He was the inspiration for the song "Too Much Blood" by the Rolling Stones.
Kiyomi Itô who plays Kyoko is always excellent but is even better in this film. Definitely helped make the story work. Really an excellent Satõ movie worth watching.
