The idea of mixing a romcom with a slasher is not that weird in itself, as most slashers have love interests in them, yet i don't think it was ever done as the principal focus. And this movie may explay why.
What is fun in a slasher is obviously seeing a masked killer take out characters one by one in gruesome ways, while in some movies also searching for who is under the mask, while others have an iconic killer you followed for years in multiple sequels. But this movie somewhat try to do a lot of things, but hardly fully suceed at any. That said, its still very watchable.
So for a start the movie follows a bit the structure of a Scream movie with an intro kill, introduction to the killer, and then some kind of guessing game on who it might be. But it also want to be a romcom, so it focus a lot on 2 characters wich said killer has decided to focus on itself.
What happen is that you switch between romcom moments and killer chasing them, and it hardly ever drive away from that. Of course as a slasher, you need a bodycount, and the movie deliver in that regard, but majority of the kills are characters you don't know at all and don't care whatsoever. So you never have that feeling of dredd as "will your favorite character be axed next" and such.
The dialogues in general are also weirdly written and some characters almost felt like they were coming out of Scary Movie. Thanksfully the 2 leads are charismatic and likeable, wich save it partially.
Otherwise, as i mentioned above, the movie does deliver on gore and and violence, but often it is done in such a detached way that it is simply funny rather than scary.
The movie also felt a bit like a sequel despite being the first one, as the killer already was active previous years in the movie's universe and the police know it, peoples know it, some kids having mask of it, it felt a bit "off" and unearned in my opinion.
The movie also want to portray the killer too much like an undestructable "Terminator", with litterally having foot step sound effect that make it look like it weight as much as Robocop. There is a scene related to that aspect (Terminator-style) that is certainly satisfying for gore hounds, but make no sense in a grounded reality.
With all that said, even with some negatives standing out very evidently, the movie is still enjoyable to a degree if you are into slashers. If only for the violence and the 2 main characters that are likeable. Would be a 6.5 but not a 7, so i round it up at a 6 out of 10.

It had been a while since i watched a Japanese martial art movie, so as i saw this on Netflix and with the French dubbing nontheless, i sure gave it a shot.
The first issue i had was that the plot is barebone. The old classic of retiring hitman have to be taken out by former boss has been seen a million time sure, but normally you at least are given a reason to care for the character. Sure his familly is murdered but outside of that, you see so little of that guy and he pretty much have the personnality of a broom, so its hard to care.
As for the rest, well sure there is some decent action with no refrain on blood and violence, but its like the movie never decide what it want to be. Is he supernatural or just a man? Is this a serious revenge flick or its supose to be goofy (despite the violence). It never decide.
You really have to turn your brain off to enjoy it even middly. Personally i was never "bored" per say, but i rolled my eyes a few times. I would say its a 5.4 out of 10. So it get a 5 ultimately. Its average. Watchable, but its not one i will revisit.

This is another one i had in my backlog box from that video store clearance from a little while ago. It was 1$, i saw Anne Hathaway (wich is a pretty good actress in general) and Rebel Wilson (wich can funny if a little obnoxious in some roles) so i was like sure why not.
But i can't say i had huge expectations. I am trying to do 20 days without alcohol and if you read my other reviews, you know movie nights = beer nights in general. But hey, staying sober mean going trough the backlog of movies i don't have huge expectations for, if only to pass time. Turn out this movie is actually pretty funny !
Sure, you really have to turn off your brain as the story is really absurd and could never happen in real life (the scamming part sure, but not in these goofy ways), but if you accept that fact that its a silly comedy, the movie really work well. The characters are funny, and their rivalry lead to some funny situations. Good chemistry between the actors too.
I never saw the 1988 version peoples mention in the reviews, so i can't compare, but judging this movie on itself, it gave me a fun 90 minutes.
Now would i watch it again? Unless a friend come over and i let them choose on my shelves and they happen to pick this one, probably not... at least til a while. But i don't think i will put it my "for sale" pile. At least not for now. Maybe if one day i want to downsize my collection due to space issues. But its good enough to stay in it for now. Solid 7 out of 10 !
