Cabin Fever: Patient Zero (2014)
Absolutely dire
After wasting over an hour of my life on this (yep my own fault entirely) I felt compelled to write a review to save others doing the same. This is without doubt one of the worst movies I've watched in a very very long time. It really is genuinely, absolutely dreadful, with no redeeming features whatsoever. The acting is simply awful - some of the worst I've witnessed in ages, the plot is nonsense, the "make-up effects" are laughable and the whole thing reeks of amateur trash. Put these things all together and you've got yourself an absolute stinker, and that is exactly what this is. Don't waste your time on it, trust me, you'll regret it.
Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)
Dull...
I quite enjoyed the first one. It was a little bit different and relatively creepy. So I was suckered in to going to see the 2nd. BIG mistake! Playing on the popularity of the first, they obviously decided to churn this one out to line their pockets even more. It's dull, boring, tedious and silly, with much of the same stuff going on as in the first. The "plot" is paper thin and clearly something someone made up as an afterthought and tacked on to the original. It was probably developed and completed in a week or two - it shows. The only people in the audience who enjoyed this was a group of girls aged around 13 years old. Enough said - avoid!
Precious (2009)
Outstanding
It isn't very often that a film so brutal yet touching comes along. Set in Harlem, Precious tells the story of a young girl who leads a very troubled and dark life. I won't spoil it for you, but trust me, it's brutal and heartbreaking. The acting is superb, and without wishing to sound condescending, surprisingly (for me) Mariah Carey also gives a sterling performance. The two main characters (Precious, played by Gabourey Sidibeare and Mo'Nique as her mother) are the real stars, with performances so believable you will want to cry for one, and seriously injure the other. A real triumph. Thank goodness this is not based on a true story. Sadly, there will be many actual events like this taking place right now. Tragic. Fortunately there is light within this film and it ultimately shines through.
Casino (1995)
Awesome
Goodfellas and Casino are amongst my top 10 films of all time. Set in decadent yet trashy Las Vegas, Robert De Niro manages a casino and falls in love with Sharon Stone. Life is good, but the past soon catches up with you and endings aren't always happy. De Niro plays an outstanding performance, as does Pesci, these two really work well together and Sharon Stone also holds her own. The film successfully pulls you right into their world and you will be immersed in it. Scorcese is the master of this genre, and rightly so. Excellent story-line and a superb cast, directed by the Godfather of mob films - it simply ticks every box. I've watched it many times and NEVER tire of it. A must see.
El orfanato (2007)
An Atmospheric Delight
Can you believe that some people refuse to watch or even down rate a film because it's foreign and has subtitles? I mean, come on! How hard is it to read... Anyway, please ignore those reviews and simply go rent this! You won't be disappointed. It's stunning. A real atmospheric delight. It has a great story-line, beautifully acted with a few shocks and turns thrown in to keep you hooked and enthralled. Del Toro is the master of this sort of work, and if you're a fan of his, then you MUST see this. I loved Pan's Labyrinth and The Devil's Backbone, and The Orphanage is another hit. I personally prefer films in their original language, I feel it adds to the authenticity. Another triumph from Del Toro. Highly recommended!
GoodFellas (1990)
Awesome Mobster Flick
One of the best films ever made revolving around a bunch of mobsters (aka -wise-guys). A film of this calibre is hard to sum up in such few words. Where to even begin? It's a fantastic story-line (based on a true story), has amazing acting, De Niro and Pesci give awesome performances and really work fantastically well together. It has one of the best directors of all time in Scorcese, who is the master in this genre. Put these all together and you have yourself an awesome flick. It's fast paced, incredibly smart, funny yet gritty. If you enjoy hard hitting gangster films you'll be glued to the screen and are sure to relish it! I've watched it several times and never tire of it!
"I go from Rags To Riches"
Saw (2009)
Nice concept....
I'm a fan of both the Saw films (the first couple anyway) and of horror survival games. Konami used to be my favourite developers, but they went their separate ways after Silent Hill 4, and it shows. Anyway, back to the game. I started playing it less than a week ago, and completed it last night. That's an extremely short playing time! Not exactly challenging.... nor value for money. The plot is what you'd expect from Saw, a series of "tests" set for detective Tapp from Jigsaw. You have to solve puzzles and make your way through many traps along the way to face your ultimate choice. The graphics are nice, atmosphere and tension. As I said, the plot is acceptable. The three main things that let this game down are - 1 - The game play time - just awful! no value for money at all!! 2- The combat system - really dreadful and SO frustrating! and 3 - Repetitive puzzles. All in all, a good concept badly brought to life.
This is a game I'd most definitely recommend you rent for a week (much cheaper, and you'll complete it by then anyway!)
Do you want to play a game?..... (then rent it!)
The Final Destination (2009)
Make this the FINAL destination...
Okay, I actually am a fan of the F.D "series". Well, actually I really liked the first and second. The third then began to become weaker, and the FINAL (here's hoping) destination was the weakest and lamest yet. You know the synopsis - some American teen has a premonition and then he/she figures it can be broken or changed and so on and so forth... I guess after 3 of these films it becomes difficult to create new and interesting ideas, and it shows. The first two were far more inspired, and as far as "death" goes, it seemed somehow more plausible and indeed possible (remember the plane crash and the motor-way pile up?) In this instalment all we have are a cast of wooden chumps we couldn't care less about. Couple that with the unbelievable, verging on the ridiculous events that take place. Pretty much everything involves gasoline, electricity and sparks, instruments or machinery that don't work properly, to morons who couldn't put a fuse in let alone be taken seriously at their "job" (hazardous, unbelievable and utterly ridiculous).
If this is the best the F.D team can do with their "franchise" - quit NOW.
Weak, weak weak.
Chinjeolhan geumjassi (2005)
Poetry in motion..
Firstly let me say, I'm a HUGE fan of Chan-wook Park. The guy is a genius, and an absolutely awesome director. So I was looking for another amazing film from him, and I was not disappointed. This is the final film if his vengeance trilogy and if you're a fan, you will probably notice that it stars many of the actors from the other 2 films. The central character is Geum ja Ssi, played wonderfully by Yeong-ae Lee who seeks revenge on the one who stole her freedom. What ensues is typical of Mr Park - black humour, stylised cinematography, beautiful soundtrack and fantastic acting. Everything comes together to create yet another masterpiece in the ever growing list of movies from Mr Park (AKA Mr Vengeance). For me, an 8 out of 10, as I feel it didn't quite have the same substance and depth of Oldboy or Mr Vengeance, but an amazing film nonetheless.
Saints Row 2 (2008)
Fantastic Fun!
I'm a huge GTA fan and have not played the previous Saints Row game, but it was recommended that I try this one. And I'm so glad I did :) I really didn't know what to expect, but straight away it was clear it's in the same vein as GTA, but it has SO much more to offer. From the start you get to choose how your character looks, so you can base it fairly close to yourself. Everything from skin colour, to age, weight, facial features and voice. Great fun :) From there on, you get to begin free roaming, and this is where GTA 4 loses out. Whereas the graphics in GTA 4 are unrivalled, the game-play was fixed and VERY short lived. But S R 2 is the opposite - there's SO much to do and everywhere to go! On top of which you can customise your look, your cars, your cribs and your crew and partake of loads of missions, side activities and diversions (like ambulance driver, taxi, police woman/man, insurance fraud (so much fun), races, hit-man and more!). It's a truly great game and very underrated and under appreciated. If these guys were to combine this game (or their next one) with more advanced graphics (which are already very good) then they would sure as heck give Rockstar a run for their money. Go get it and have yourself some fun!
Mirrors (2008)
Better than expected
The concept for this movie comes from the Korean film - Into the Mirror, which I really enjoyed. I'm a huge Asian film fan, so I had reservations about a Hollywood remake. However, it's not a true remake, since it's NOT an exact copy. But it's most definitely "borrowed" (to be polite) all the ideas and concepts from it's Korean original. Anyway, if you've seen the original, you'll already have a good idea of what to expect. But - there's also plenty in here that you won't as the director has added lots of added surprises and has twisted the original story-line considerably. This film was a really pleasant surprise, in as much as I really enjoyed it. The acting is very good, most notably Kiefer. The director - who did Switchblade Romance (another really good film) has used the original to make a great partial re-make with lots of surprises, much more gore and nice little extras. Recommended if you enjoyed Into The Mirror. Likewise if you enjoy creepy horrors with a fair amount of good old gore! Better than expected :)
Terminator Salvation (2009)
Salvation... not quite, but near.
Terminator and T 2 are really great iconic films, with a cult status and rightly so. Just brilliant. T 3, as most people agree, missed the spot. So a new dawn has arose, and with it comes Terminator Salvation. If you ask most people what they most remember from the films, it's going to be Arnie as the Terminating Cyborg. He had that role (as his "acting" style) down to a T as a cold robotic machine who was trying to understand human beings - and we related to him, we actually felt something for his character. We cared. There's nothing like that in T4. The plot is nonsensical and if you analyse it, you'll find lots of plot holes. HOWEVER - this isn't the kind of film you go to analyse right? It's a big budget, all out, action sci-fi flick, with lots of big bangs, explosions and great big evil machines. Great special effects and cool robots. That's the point, right? Not as good as Terminator 1 and 2 but better than 3. So grab some popcorn and enjoy!
Drag Me to Hell (2009)
Mildly entertaining.
I have to say I had fairly high hopes for this film, and overall I guess I got what I I should have expected - a typical Sam Raimi film, which is fun and nothing serious. It's not a brilliant film - Having said that it's not an awful film either. It's very much in the same style and feel of Evil Dead. It has a few black comedy moments. The typical over the top, latex, puppets and in-your-face scares, but there's nothing truly scary. If you're a big fan of Evil Dead (which I think was incredibly groundbreaking for it's time)-BUT when you watch it now it's pretty lame, over the top and obvious (but weirdly still in a good kinda way?) - then this is probably a film you'd enjoy. Realistically, this is not a true horror film, it's most certainly a black comedy with (not so subtle) overtones of horror. Worth a watch when you have time to kill or are a fan of this style.
Biohazard 5 (2009)
Good, but not quite...
Having just completed R.E 5, I have to admit to feeling somewhat disappointed. As a HUGE fan of R.E 4, my expectations were set quite high. After all, Resident Evil 4 was ground breaking stuff. Sadly, I don't feel this sequel delivers.
The plus points are fairly obvious - huge similarities in terms of game-play, controls and the overall feel of it, just like R.E 4. Alongside stunning graphics.
The minus points were, in comparison to 4, 5 only lasted approximately 10-12 hours for the main story whilst 4 lasted about 20+ hours. The depth of complexity the former title had was missing (the many cut scenes requiring quick reactions, the deeper story line, the riddles, puzzles and various locations). Granted, some of these featured, but they were scarce.
So in closing, 5 is a good game. A very good game. Nicely done, and enjoyable enough. But, it's not a truly great game in terms of a follow up to 4. It was promising, and something we fans eagerly waited for. But Resident Evil 4 STILL reigns supreme. R.E 4 - 10/10. R.E 5 - 7/10
Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008)
Silent Hill? ..... Not quite
As an avid fan of the Silent Hill series, I understandably, had this pre-ordered way back 2 months ago. I received it last week and completed it 2 days ago. That's a miserly 12 hours in all! So, how do I rate this in comparison to the others?? Quite frankly, I don't. It does not come anywhere near S.H 2, 3 and yes, even 4 (which I really enjoyed). All fans of Silent Hill know the formula -it's that oppressive, dark, dense, anxious build up. Claustrophobic and psychological right the way to the end. These elements are synonymous to Silent Hill and were severely lacking in this game. It borrows so heavily from the film and has a Resident Evil feel about it, that doesn't work. The plot, length, atmosphere, quality and overall feel of this game was quite frankly nothing more than an American travesty of something that was unique and brilliant. It is a passable RPG at best. A Silent Hill game? I think not.
Silent Hill 2 (2001)
Just Excellent
If you want a deeply dark, unsettling whilst still a simply delightful gaming experience then you HAVE to get this game. I've played all of the S.H series, with the exception of the original. But strangely S.H 2 was my most recently played (first time). I had set myself up to be disappointed, because I was used to the newer S.H titles. But boy was I wrong! Silent Hill 2 just has something that the others don't. And it's very difficult to put my finger on just what that "is". But it's a truly exceptional game.
It is overwhelmingly dark, creepy and unsettling - and just fantastic. Game-play, graphics, puzzles, story-line and sound effects - Just EXCELLENT. One of my TOP games, ever.
Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004)
Dark, unsettling stuff - GREAT!
I'm a huge fan if the Silent Hill series and whilst I fully understand and appreciate why so many fans rate this sequel lower than the others (because it isn't actually based in Silent Hill), I believe it's merits far outweigh their complaints.
Typically with any Silent Hill game it features strange and psychotic creatures, puzzles and battles. The controls are perfectly simple. The story-line is smooth, the characters are intriguing and the voice acting is great. But of course the graphics and the sound effects - just superb! I would not class this as one for novice game-players. It's a notch up in terms of complexity.
Synonymously, the atmosphere is overwhelmingly dark, creepy and VERY unsettling.
There are plenty of scares and frights in this one, and very often you get the feeling the whole game is TOTALLY messing with your head -- Which it is!! Enjoy it with the lights out and the sound turned UP...
Silent Hill: Origins (2007)
A nice S.H sequel (or prequel!)
So.. Sequel or Prequel... hmmmn. Origins takes us on a journey in the life of Travis, your average all-American, friendly truck driving guy. He's a loner (awww) and is happiest alone driving his truck. He tends not to forge relationships and he prefers to leave his encounters in his rear view mirror. Until he stumbles upon a house ablaze in a sleepy little town called Silent Hill.....
This is, actually, quite a good game in the S.H series, (better than Homecoming in my opinion) but it still lacks a certain something. It's not up to the standard of S.H 2, 3 or 4 (the room) in terms of complexity, darkness, oppressive fear, subtle creepiness and plot. And the overall time it takes to complete is WAY too short. You do sort of get the impression this one didn't take too long to develop in comparison to the former titles. However, it still has the foundations of a great horror RPG with a dark dense atmosphere, nice graphics and game-play. Along with the typical scares, puzzles and nasty creatures to defeat which are all synonymous with Silent Hill. The extra addition of improved combat whilst fighting enemies is also a nice new feature. Overall a 7 out of 10 (for me). I did enjoy it, but it is nowhere near as good as the earlier titles (but better than Homecoming). Whether the like of S.H 1, 2 and 3 can be recreated in this age, remains to be seen, and is doubtful. But I'd still recommend it if you are a S.H fan, and if you're not, you'll still enjoy the back seat ride! On a side note-- I purchased one and played it (and it had a couple of VERY annoying glitches). however, I purchased another very recently, and it had none?
Five Across the Eyes (2006)
Absolutely DIRE...
This "film" attempts to follow the genre of low budget, hand-held camera flicks that have proved to be very effective and successful.
This one, fails, and HOW.
It's amazing how many so called "awards" this piece of garbage has got plastered on the cover..... it makes you wonder what these critics were on when they actually submitted this....
Words fail to describe just how absolutely appalling this movie really is. Seriously, it's THAT BAD.
I watched it in 20 minutes flat, on almost continual fast forward.
From rubbish lighting to dreadful directing, grainy visuals to muffled sound, and of course not forgetting the ABYSMAL acting, this was one completely and utterly pathetic piece of so-called film making.
It seriously, has NO redeeming qualities - whatsoever. Save your cash and watch a decent low budget horror flick, there are plenty out there - Dead End, The Blair Witch, REC, to name but a few.
AVOID this rubbish at all costs. DO NOT waste your money or time on this piece of trash pretending to be an actual film.
Take heed of all the other comments! You've been warned!
Oldeuboi (2003)
An Absolute Cult Masterpiece
Chan-wook Park is a genius, in my opinion. Following on from Sympathy For Mr Vengeance (another FANTASTIC film), Oldboy follows the story of Oh-Dae-Su, superbly played by Min-sik Choi. Locked up for 15 years without apparent reason and finally released to find out who and why and seek bloody revenge.
This film is incredibly stylised, expertly directed, wonderfully acted and has a beautiful, haunting soundtrack.
This is a one in a million film that is simply stunning in every sense.
An amazing director, awesome script, stunning acting, musical score, and fantastic cinematography, come together to give you an absolutely mind blowing, revenge seeking, cult Tartan Asia masterpiece.
Boksuneun naui geot (2002)
Fantastically Brutal And Intelligent. An Underrated Masterpiece.
Chan-wook Park delivers another stunning piece of cinematography.
Sympathy for Mr Vengeance follows the story of Park-Dong jin, played brilliantly by Kang-Ho Song, whose daughter is kidnapped with terrible consequences.
Once again, following in the trait of Mr Park's style, this film has twists and turns galore, a fair old helping of violence, stunning acting from everyone and a simply amazing story-line.
You will be immersed, hooked, shocked, saddened and completely blown away.
And the result will leave you breathless and in admiration of the genius that is Chan-wook Park.
Diary of the Dead (2007)
Scarily BAD
Wow......I have such high expectations from anything done by the very talented Mr Romero, based on most of his past greats. He basically created the zombie genre, and has some excellent films to his ever expanding collection. Night of The Living Dead, Dawn of The Dead and Land of The Dead were all really great zombie films, and the legend that is George A Romero is born.
What happened with Diary of the dead???? It was just so BAD. The story-line was bang up-to-date, using hand held cameras, so I could get how this COULD have worked really well. However.... it DIDN'T. It was slow, boring, dull and monotonous. The acting was absolutely wooden and the film lacked the usual Romero style, humour and gore.
I actually considered walking out on this.
If like me, you are a fan of Romero's, you may very well end up as disappointed as I was.
And I NEVER thought I'd say that about a film by the zombie master.
Hostel: Part II (2007)
Depraved
I'm the first to admit that I sometimes enjoy what may be considered "hardcore" horror movies. I have a pretty open mind and am therefore quite difficult to shock (I guess I'm quite desensitised by now - which I admit is NOT a good thing).
Hostel 1 was what I'd consider a "good" horror flick with a decent enough story-line, acting and gore (although it did contain some unnecessary sexual content in my opinion), but hey, I guess it is an Eli Roth production, right?! Hostel Part 2... heck, it totally broke the barriers of decency and completely crossed the line, and I'm not even talking in terms of a horror film. It's brutal, depraved, twisted and extremely disturbing. I could not watch some of the scenes in this film. It's seriously sick.
This is NOT entertainment in any sense of the word.
Quite frankly, I'd be extremely worried if my mind conjured up the sort of thoughts that Eli Roth's obviously does. SERIOUSLY worried.
Feed (2005)
Interesting idea
I watched this because I'm a fan of "alternative" shock movies. "Irreversible" being one such film.
But even I found this film a bit hard to stomach. Basically the plot is paper thin and has holes everywhere. And the acting is mediocre - in my opinion. Other than that, the sexual content goes beyond what I find acceptable, basically you are subjected to porn when it really isn't necessary to the plot.
Some of the other scenes within the movie are very disturbing but I won't divulge any further.
I think if this had been done differently it could have been so much better, the idea behind the film is a unique one and could have been a really good film.
This however is a disturbing, very strange and unsettling film made on a low budget. The only redeeming feature is the ending.
Biohazard 4 (2005)
The Finest
An absolutely awesome game. The best game EVER for the Nintendo Gamecube (in my humble opinion). Flawless graphics, ambiance and game play. Atmospherically it can't be put into words. Forget everything you ever knew about previous Resident Evil titles, this is something entirely different. No two dimensional game play, no annoying problems with clunky character movement, this time you get to go where you point your controller. I personally didn't enjoy the other Resident Evil titles primarily because of the controls even though I loved the genre and concept. These problems have been rectified and there is absolutely NOTHING I would change about this game. It is, quite simply, a masterpiece.
Perfection. Capcom have surpassed themselves, and I can't wait for the next episode. R.E 4 is STILL the best game ever (updated 2009)
