Glass (2019)
M. Night's Masterpiece
I don't know what critics are thinking, nor what anyone was expecting. This was never going to be a typical action superhero movie. This movie was made for fans of M. Night and the universes he creates. This is his masterpiece. Every shot, every bit of dialogue, and every decision is masterful.
The way this film concludes is perfect. It does something that NO OTHER superhero movie does. It also provides additional information to all 3 of these characters that makes the entire 20 year wait worth it.
This movie is perfection. M. Night can retire his jersey.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (2014)
If you love the Turtles, you'll love this!
I say that with the utmost sincerity. I loved the Turtles growing up, the first 2 movies were great, and while I have not watched the new cartoons, I still saw the 2007 cartoon movie because I grew up with these guys. I of course had reservations (Michael Bay only does over the top action movies, the Turtles don't look the same, Megan Fox as April?), but I knew if a studio spent millions putting them back on the big screen, I had to see it.
The dialogue may be poor at times but the action scenes are great. All the fight scenes showcasing the Turtles, Splinter and Shredder are some of the best fight scenes I've ever seen.
The core story about brothers learning to get along and deal with family issues, while loving and trying to protect their father, is still the same as it always was, which means it's familiar but also looked at in a different way.
Like I said, if you love the Turtles you'll love this movie, as they have a bunch of throwbacks, classic lines, jokes that span many ages and a decent story.
As someone who has seen all 4 earlier movies in theaters, there's a chance this could be the best one.
A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)
Freddy Fans Rejoice! Freddy's Baaaaack!
I just attended the midnight premiere of the new Nightmare on Elm St movie, and it was a rocking good time. You can tell that since I went early and don't even care how much sleep I get going into work for 7, that I'm a big Freddy fan, so I'll try and make this review unbiased but also for the Freddy fan in everyone.
Robert Englund IS Freddy. There's no mistaking that. However, Jackie does a fantastic job of bringing this character to life too. He does certain things with the famous 4 knives-for-fingers that is now characteristically Jackie's. His makeup is that of a true-to-life burn victim, yet still scary. His voice is top notch too. Definitely gives a Freddy feel and every time he talked I got chills.
The effects are great here, especially the dream sequences. There are times when you don't know if the characters are awake or asleep, and that produces some suspenseful moments.
There are some moments that echo the original Nightmare, including the wall scene & Tina's bed death, but they are done a bit differently. There also a few surprises that I know Freddy fans will love.
The actors, well let's face it, they're as good as they're going to get. I was never into horror movies, especially 80's slasher flicks, for the acting. It's all about the deaths and the villain, and this film brings a lot of both.
I was a bit surprised at how much Freddy showed himself. For the first hour or so, it's not too frequent, but towards the climax he started appearing every few minutes. He was still dark and creepy, but he also had a couple of great one liners that were so Freddy-esquire it was amazing.
I personally loved the way the story played out and how it differed just slightly from the original. I really enjoyed this movie and was happy to see Freddy on the big screen again. I believe all Freddy fans will as well.
The House of the Devil (2009)
Classic suspense horror for true fans of the genre
I heard some good things about this film before viewing, and then on this site heard some bad things. I've come to believe that listening to others doesn't always help. It's all about opinion and experience, and in my opinion, this experience was worth it.
I won't get into too many details of the plot as the reviews and trailers tell it straight forward, but as far as tension, cinematography, atmosphere, music and style goes, this film really has it all. It's a classic story of your ordinary girl next door being put into an extraordinary situation. It's a situation that she tries to avoid, the people around her try to avoid, and you as a viewer knows she should avoid but can't help and stay to see what transpires.
If you're looking for a run of the mill slasher flick, a psychological thriller, or an action packed gore fest, I'm sorry but this isn't for you. However, if you're into the types of horror movies that take a simple, almost predictable concept and turns it on its' head in an unrelenting fashion, then look no further. This movie will stay with you for a few days for different reasons, but my biggest turn on was the feeling throughout the film, an homage to earlier times, and an evil that knows no bounds.
The Last House on the Left (2009)
Good remake that kept it's cruel nature
As a fan of the original 1972 version, I wasn't expecting a lot, but at the same time, with Wes being brought in as a producer, I felt it had to live up to some expectations.
What I got was a fun yet torturous movie that had the audience with it the whole time. They were gasping, hollering, sighing, saddened, and later clapping, laughing and woo'ing. It really takes you for a ride from the first moment and only lets up briefly, only to take you back down again.
While the original scores higher for "shock factor," this one still has plenty of gore and story. I'm not going to give anything away because I'm sure most of you know the story by the trailers, but overall this is an intense film that you won't forget anytime soon. If you know what happens, you'll be happy when the second half of the film picks up. If you have no idea, try to enjoy the ride as I'm sure you'll leave satisfied.
A few people in my theater left before it ended, so if you feel sick or faintful, just keep repeating to yourself: it's only a movie, it's only a movie, it's only a movie...
Hancock (2008)
Hancock > The Hulk
Hancock is better than The Hulk and is as good as Iron Man, and here's why.
Some reviews I've read on this board seem malignant as they continually rain on good movies parades. They actually see movies with the feeling that they WANT the film to fail. Why, so you can talk trash about it on a message board? I will start this review off by saying there's not a single thing wrong with this movie. Sure, some people feel as if they would have made it differently, but that's not them. They're not the ones behind the scripts or the cameras. Behind them is a team devoted to bringing us what we love about a summer movie: great action sequences, cool characters, and a decent story with good looking people. That's the definition of a summer movie people. Now, moving on...
I thought I had seen all the best moments the movie had to offer in the previews, but low and behold I was wrong. The scenes in the trailer take place within the first 30 minutes, while the next hour is a well developed story involving superhero origins, complicated relationships and some intense action.
You can pretty much guess the story from the trailer, however the movie is far from predictable; a man with super powers who is depressed wants to help the world while society shuns him. Feeling he can help, Jason Bateman's character Ray decided to invest in Hancock and make him personable again. You know he spends time in jail, hates it, then gets called to help out the city when it's in trouble. That's the story right there. Granted there are more twists and turns involving our hero but it is not, repeat NOT what you expect. Will Smith is also very funny in this movie, cursing at neighbors and children while maintaining his A-Hole approach to a hero.
The story is ORIGINAL, something hardly any movie nowadays can claim, especially movies in the superhero genre. The background of the hero, as well was his powers' weakness is something I've never seen done before. And guess what? The bad guys are the bad guys! The bank robbers, purse snatchers, rapists and crooks are the people Hancock is battling against, something that all heroes should be fighting, not some made up villain that can easily match the good guy. This is why the story as well as the movie are fantastic.
Running Scared (2006)
One of the best movies of the year, like an opened Pandora's Box
Well it's not as confusing or jumpy as others have said, but my statement holds true when I say it's like an opened Pandora's Box, because there are some really horrible situations that some of these people are put in. This movie was crazy. From beginning to end it kept me thinking and wanting more. It's pretty gory, and a bit graphic when it comes to the sex scene without any nudity, and the language is up there too. I really enjoyed this movie, even though at some points it felt as if the writers said," Okay now what's the worst possible situation that could happen now?" Without giving anything away, things happen in this movie that are a little unexpected, but in the end I think you'll be rewarded. Excellent movie, one of the best of the year next to Hills.
Saw (2004)
How would you react?
You all should be ashamed of yourselves: Have you seen another movie where the characters were in a situation in which they knew how to act? No, so how did you expect them to act? How would you react? Me? I woulda sawed off my foot right in the beginning. This was a fantastic movie. Great story (there aren't any plot holes, just think about it, and if you find one remember it's only a movie, not a true story deal) fair acting, good shock moments (it's the R version; more blood in the unrated cut) and an awesome ending (did you see it coming? oh you did? you're a damn liar!). I've seen people walk out of this film, and not since Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1973) have people walked out, so just go along for the ride!
