Things We Lost in the Fire (2007)
Heavy but GOOD
The Good: The writing and acting are top notch. The Bad: The hand held camera pans and scans and really, REALLY, close, close-ups are a little dis-concerting.
But Benicio DelToro is right on with his performance! Best acting I've seen in a while.
Saw the movie at a preview in Cleveland. The Theatre was packed, and the reaction from most people was that it was too heavy, too depressing. But it is exactly that quality that makes it ring true. The interplay between the neighbor that hates his wife and Benicio's character are perfect. A smaller role is played by Alison Lohman ( Matchstick Men ) was also very well acted.
A steadier camera without the wild pans and I would give it a 9 or 10.
The Good Girl (2002)
Excellent acting and writing
Pleasantly surprised at the performance by Jennifer Anniston. She did a terrific job! The movie itself was intelligently written and although not shot on a big budget - the scenes came across just right. The style reminded me of another movie I like a great deal - Clockwatchers. Good Movie!
Clockwatchers (1997)
Excellent writing
This was clearly written by someone who has gone through the mind numbing, soul snatching experience of being a temp. It captures the self-worthlessness perfectly and also the stupidity of modern corporate America today.
Talent for the Game (1991)
Those that blow this movie off
Do not understand baseball. This is a gem. Yes the scenario where Sammy is exploited by the major lague team owner is a bit hokey - but.....don't let that ruin the great job that this movie does of capturing the feel of minor league baseball and the struggle, even the most talented have, to make it to the big leagues and succeed. And the longing of Virgil to catch a major league pitcher is conveyed perfectly by Edward James Almos - anyone who has the longing to play baseball but not quite enough talent will get the lump in their throat. Much the same as another flawed but good baseball movie - the Rookie.
