The Andy Griffith Show: The Rivals (1963)
Where are the backpacks?
Karen is carrying 3 books. Opie has 1 book and a lunch box held by a leather strap. Kids today have backpacks weighted down like soldiers on a long march. Why? Better education today? No. In those days we kept our stuff in a DESK rather than carry everything to and from school. Ahh, progress.
Do You Speak American? (2005)
How Americans Speak Differently Across The Country
Robert MacNeil (a Canadian) travels across the USA exploring the different words and pronunciation of words, phrases used in different regions of the country. A fascinating look at so-called American language. For example, prospective news reporters are taught to speak like those from the West Coast and drop local dialects. Something I've noticed ever since. I loved this hard-to-find documentary. In light of the current tribalism rampant today.
The Terror: Gaman (2019)
A small correction
My family was held in the "camps" during WWII. My father served with the 442 but my mother had to go with my 4 and 2 year old brothers because they were 75% Japanese American. My Mom was 50% white and not required to go since the line drawn was "more than 50%" Japanese ancestry. This was in Washington State and I don't know if California was different. In some scenes it is said that 1% was all you needed to be incarcerated which is contrary to my personal experience.
I'm certainly glad to see this story finally addressing at least one of the many events in our history that we should acknowledge. Impressive selection of a recently "remembered" moment when America went crazy and ignored the single immutable Law of the Land. Prescient because of the things happening at our southern border.
Catch-22 (2019)
A Really Big Misfire
The end of the book has the "brass" offering Yossarian a discharge as long as "you'll say nice things about us when you get home". That is the most important scene left out of the movie. It was virtually the MEANING of the book!! As a matter of fact, I thought this version of the book was being turned into a Hulu SERIES with this being just Season One (like the title says). It appears to me that neither the script writers and director didn't read or understand the book. How about the parachutes Milo took out of the planes in exchange for "stock certificates" in M&M. Yossarian was on McWatt's manifest when he flew into Kid Sampson and Doc couldn't figure out how to report Yossarian alive if he was on the plane (another catch). There are so many meaningful scenes left out of this "mini-series" it absolutely needs a Season 2.
On a personal note, thanks for RUINING my favorite book of all time. We are truly in the midst of an artistic wasteland.
