The Great Race (1965)
How was it possible?
The worst film I have ever seen? Expensive, pretentious, a complete cliché from beginning to end, and above all, NOT original at all! How could Blake Edwards direct such a rubbish? Well, I know some people just ate him, but in fact he did some fabulous films at different times. This is the kind of film I'd walk away, or turn off the TV after 5', but in fact, it was so bad I wanted to see how far it would go! Eventually, perhaps, only Tony Curtis managed not to exaggerate so much, and was a slight positive point on a complete flop! I know, historically, US cinema was going trough a terrible crisis in 1965, but fortunately winds from Europe and even NY would blow to save it... This film is just preposterous!!!! And believe me, 1st time in my life I write such a devastating critique!
Os Maias (1979)
One of the best RTP- Portugal Drama mini series
Perhaps, one of the best Drama productions ever made by RTP (Portugal State Television). A fantastic set of Actors, a superb photography and sets. Masterly Directed by Ferrao Katzenstein. It was an unique blend of seasoned Portuguese Actors with young beginners, and a famous Brazilian, Ruben de Falco For an inexplicable stubbornness of an anonymous TV Manager it was Videotaped in Black and White, and therefore reducing all its possibilities... Amazing, but THAT is Portugal at its best (worst, of course...) I was beginning my Press career that latter lead me to become a Film Director myself, and took a series of Colour slides, now unique... This is the only one I have left in 35mm (I was using a 6x7 Mamyia Camera at the time too)...
