***POSSIBLE PLOT SPOILERS IN TEXT*** "Wow" I thought to myself. A post apocalyptic movie is something that we haven't seen done very recently, at least not one of this style. At first glance, one could imagine a "Mad Max" feel or at least a movie that gives homage to the genre. Then while watching, it was quite clear that they had no idea what they actually wanted this movie to be. It actually splits itself into 3 very different genres with very clear cut lines in between. I was watching the movie and then all of the sudden, I was in a whole different genre then I was just in a second ago. And that will happen several times throughout the film. The characters were weak, the plot was non existent, so many story lines were unresolved, and the acting was atrocious. If you want to see a lot of screaming, punk rocker psychopaths, severed limbs, horrible acting, and a bit of King Arthur's court...then this may be for you.
Ricky Gervais is absolutely brilliant! I first saw him in The Office, which was one of the most fantastically addicting shows I've ever watched. It was also one of the most uncomfortable shows to watch, much in the vein of Curb Your Enthusiasm. Then I saw him in Extras and by that time I was craving more. So I happened to come across this live special and was again floored at the pure comedy brilliance of this man. It's the subtleties in his humor that makes it so great. I am an American so there are a few bits that I didn't have any reference to but even those bits were hilarious just because Ricky Gervais is such a talented comedian. I can't wait to watch more of his stuff!
Jet Li's Fearless is the most beautifully written martial arts movie I have ever seen. It is mostly a story of one man's journey of self discovery and redemption. From beginning to end you are sucked into the movie. I was truly speechless when the movie was over and it left me with so much to ponder. The perfect blend of philosophy and fight scenes made up for the lack of cinematography we come to expect in modern martial arts epics. Jet Li surpasses anything he has ever done. I can't wait for this movie to enter my collection! It is my favorite martial arts movie to date and I have a feeling that will never change. In one word, the Fearless experience is beautiful.
