Az igazi Mao (1995)
Everything would have been mentioned in particular would be a spoiler
This is a great movie, unique in its genre; I have never seen anything similar to it so far. To avoid any spoilers I mustn't say anything in advance about story, characters etc., just mention that when it was introduced to film theaters and even TV in Hungary, the viewers were also in condition of pleasant "knowing nothing" and began to watch it with some bored curiosity, but at the end everything came so clear, that everybody I know who had been watched it, were so surprised by the outcome, that it was a subject of conversations for a long, and even today it is often mentioned as a good example of... . That's the point I must stop the description. Enjoy it if you have to opportunity to watch this, you will be surprised, too!
Heti Hetes (1999)
"Independent media" trash
School example of silent and not-so-obvious manipulating of the behaviour and preferences of everyday people. One would like to sit down and see some relaxing "political and public life" cabaret, instead seven "so-called" well-known humourists, publicists and media men sit around the table and converse really one-sided from the view of values; commenting news and articles. Not considering, that the way of humour they stand for is really vulgaric, it is a much more politically incorrect one, and they are even "untouchables" in a certain way as they are the "voice of masses", as they declare themselves. Sad thing, that this production can be successful in Hungary, but people with good manners and tastes consider this as the bottom of all media activity and ignore this series of trash.
Nuovo Cinema Paradiso (1988)
Two movie in one
I am a great fan of this film from a long time. Few movies had such an impact on me, than this wonderful tale. Tale about wisdom, love, friendship and bitter-sweet melancoly about TIME. Yes, it is, how we change, how could we change in flow of time? Nobody could do it, but on the screen it can turn to reality, that someone clearly sees his/her role in past. Time-levels are crossing each other in a stormy night in a director's mind, revealing long forgotten dreamscapes about his childhood, about his developement in friendship, love and life at all. The story is well known, so there's no point to recall it again. The ending is really fascinating, sad and something so delightful, that it couldn't be told better, and feelings could be deeply stormed. The story is a whole, telling us, makes us feel that although all went wrong in one hand, at the other everything is rewarded. That's the Oscar-winner one. Sooner i saw the director's cut version. Everybody, who liked the short version was upset about that one, telling us about vanishing and ruining the whole story with those added scenes. I can only admit, that anybody who really loves the international version will be very delighted by the director's cut. Why? 'Cause this one is the 'grown-up' version of the movie. The short ver. is much like a fairy tale with some perfect like, idealistic human characters with some feelings in one, or another side, but weaknesses are far away from then. The long ver. teaches us some very serious things about how human interacts with time and enlighten the whole story much sharper, giving us a feeling, that we are seeing a movie reminding us good old 'Cinema Paradiso' and it is damn good, anyway...I don't think, that either version is better. Not the question it is. The question from some point of view is that which one will teach and educate us better? It's your task, you have to decide it. See both versions (first the short one) and make your decision about your view of life. You won't be disappointed, either version you vote with your simpathy.
Stalker (1979)
Not a sci-fi at all
This movie, despite its categorization, isn't a science-fiction at all. It is about the human being in its purity, told in form of a tale, but the meaning is far behind. This is a movie of patience and calm. Stalker and his mates never hurry anywhere. They simply sense their environment, and it's changing with themselves slowly as they advance. No matter where they heading, the supposed end of their way is just a vision of some goals, aims...Stalker is the movie of human admiring on nature and the existence itself without any conclusions to satisfy the viewer. There's no foggy ideas to follow or to get somewhere in life; the existence itself the miracle is. There are some breathtaking scenes of nature in the movie; their travelling with the rail-car into the Zone is somewhat a masterpiece of filmmaking, the slow rolling, the close-up of faces and the surrounding passing by with the music is perfect together. Also something to mention is the alternating of bw and color film techniques, which makes the difference between the inner and outer realities of human existence. A must see for everyone, 10 out of 10!
Barátok közt (1998)
OH, my dear!
For all god's sake, who were those that let this trash on the screen?! The stupid and sorry thing is the fact, that nowadays this is the most popular TV-transmission in Hungary. Millions gaze it every eve, and fan for the so-called 'stars'. Acting performance? Nowhere. Dramaturgy? Even the basic logic is missing, so stupid the storyline, which is similar to a chewing gum - although somehow they have to fill that terrible 30 minutes every night, don't they?
Tüskevár (1967)
All time best series (if there is even one)
Based on the book of famous Hungarian writer, István Fekete (who mainly wrote titles about animals, like Vuk, Lutra) this is a must see for all computerized Nintendo kids, who ever forget, that there's reality outside the screen. The story is about two urban boys, who spend a summer at the romantic Kis-Balaton side with an old field keeper, and gradually change their point of view about their civilized life, and fall love with the NATURE itself. Of course, first cases they fail, and this series is about their (both physical and mental) development. The acting, or dramaturgy is nothing special, it's on the level of 1950's, although there are some breath-taking shots of wildlife, which sadly nowadays already have disappeared from the location of shot, so this movie is natural memento as well. Although the movie is good enough, nowhere good as the novel itself, which is brilliant and I hope that is translated to some languages in order to be enjoyed by not only Hungarian children and adults as well.
Meseautó (1934)
Classic comedy from the age of innocence
This is a kind of 'comedy of errors' with some brilliant acting performance. This kind of movies were made one after another in the 1930's Hungary, so you can make yourself a good 100 minutes seeing it, but surely this won't change your view of life. A light play around a 'dram-car' and of course love, where the rich car-salon owner fells love with a poor, but attractive young girl. To reach her hands, he makes as if she had won the car as a prize, and to get close to her, he offers his service as a chauffeur with sharing the income to prove that he's poor too. At the end of course everything turns out and we get the casual happy end. Sadly, the best piece of action, the wonderful way of Gyula Kabos's speeches and dialogues is only meaningful for Hungarian viewers.
Stalingrad (1993)
A warmakers must-see
This movie is the perfect study of why avoid wars. As the story goes, it sligthly prooves us something that everyone knows but seldom thinks seriously. There's no right wars. No wars for justice, no wars for peace. Wars are all meat-grinder, human butching monsters. In this German masterpiece the filmmakers put everything on the scene to show us, to frighten us...There are no one-man-deals-all heroes, no good fellows, no bad guys. Everybody's suffering for nothing...The main characters are no action-movie heroes; just a branch of man trying to get along with the reality. They slowly weaken in number, as there's clear from the beginning: no solution, no way out for them. Once they try to break out, try to escape, but they don't succeed, and finally die as most of them at the outskirts of Stalingrad. The fight for life reaches the absurdity at the end, so they must fail. Might a Hollywood product make at least one of them to reach safety, and get safe and sound in the warmth of home, this movie stays at the realities. In real wars no heroes. All of participating in battles, either soldiers or civilians are flesh-and-blood persons, can be hurt, can die and suffer all the time, as could everyone of us do. 'Russian, Germans, whether nation we belong to, wars won't help us at all.Keep that in mind, please' - that's the main concept of Stalingrad.
2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
Director's brilliance
This movie is undoubtedly the best science fiction shot ever made. The first 'episode'(The dawn of mankind) is possibly one of the best scenes of film history, even from the distance of decades; it's simplicity and visual greatness orders far behind all nowadays' so-wondered computer animated sci-fi visions. If the whole story were this only, it would worth seeing just for that.
