Sable (1987)
It went from decent to very good in six episodes.
Sable was beginning to grow into a great show. In one episode his blind assistant is attacked and uses a masterful trick to live. It was one of the most memorable fight scenes I've ever seen. They took out a lot of the comic book aspects out of the show...I missed the cool outfits from the comic, but it was starting to get up on it's own two feet when the show was quickly cancelled. I was lucky enough to tape all the episodes, but I'd love to see a DVD of this show. Maybe a few last unaired episodes somewhere? They might have been even better than 5 & 6 which are wonderful.
1st Testament CIA Vengeance (2001)
I was hoping for more.
In recent years some of the best films have come out of Korea so I had middle-high hopes for this Korean American film. (It's a small budget so of course my hopes weren't Oscar high). But the writing, pacing, and acting is all sub-par. Some of the dialogue doesn't make any sense at all so I watched it twice. I guess the script was written too fast to make sense? It's obviously a DV feature. Very dark and lots of gray areas. Muted colors abound. I've seen worse though so I'll give a few points for the fact that I can see anything.
Overall this film is a failure. The action is pretty tame. The writing is pretty lame. And the acting is just okay....but how can I fault them for not understanding what they are saying? Don't watch unless you've got a lot of patience and just love student films that fall short.
Shichinin no samurai (1954)
I don't think I've seen a better film.
There are only a few films that I can think of of this calibur. Many are Akira Kurosawa films. The acting is wonderful, the story is one of the best (Magnificent Seven & Bug's Life are just two that copied it), and the photography is as good as anything I've ever seen. It's amazing to think that this film was created so long ago, and there have only been a few films since that could be even considered it's equal. Seven Samurai is so good that subtitle haters love it.
Zero Patience (1993)
Nothing wrong with that.
This is one crazy musical. AIDS the musical. It's so far from my usual taste in films...not that there is anything wrong with that...but just not my thing. USUALLY. But I had a friend who took me unaware and I found the music and strange visuals very appealing. I still get songs from the film stuck in my head out of the blue. It's amazingly catchy. And the characters are very sympathetic. I found myself really getting into something that I'd probably skip if I knew what it was about. I highly recommend this. Watch once to see how crazy it is. Then when you MUST hear the music again you'll find yourself seeking it out again. I would recommend you buying it since it's extremely hard to find the soundtrack or video. And not a sign of any DVD yet.
Lexx (1996)
A unique and VERY original show.
First let me say that the production woes and impending cancelling caused incredible amount of damage to the last season. Season 4 annoys me the most because they HAD to go to earth since the production had little to no money for space effects. But Prince from Season three is back...and he's a cool villian. Season 3 also suffered from this but only slightly. It's really only the last couple of Season 3 episodes that get dull...but they help lead you into what's going on in Season 4. Still if you're not a big fan skip these and go right at the beginning. Season 1 and 2 are wonderful. A sci-fi television satire that has some great stories and effects. The characters are wonderfully thoughtout. I highly recommend season 1 or 2 to any comedy or sci-fi fan. If you don't like aliens or laughing stay away...on second thought I'd recommend removing the wood lodged in your..
Jaianto robo (1967)
A wonderful Giant Robo show that deserves to be seen.
If you like Godzilla, Giant Robo, Ultraman or any other big monsters that fight and save the world then this is the best best. Sure it's old and campy...but it's a lot of fun. I have old tapes that I pull out every once in a while. Still enjoy the show. Sure they didn't have the greatest special effects but who did back then? Everyone complaining about how the monsters or explosions look shouldn't compare the show to present day shows but others from the same period. This is good.
I Go Pogo (1980)
Wonderful Hidden Gem
Beautiful little animated feature that I was lucky enough to see on HBO during the early days of cable. It has a charm that most films with live actors lack. It's fun and the characters are wonderful. Why this was lost is beyond me. No VHS or DVD. Who is holding it up? Great family claymation film that is tame enough for the kids but adult enough for a few older laughs.
The Great Space Coaster (1981)
"No Gnus is Good Gnus"
This show was extremely creative. Always something new and exciting. Great characters that kids got to know and love. I wish there was a way to see this as an adult. To even be able to show it to our kids. Many people still quote Gary Gnu but have forgotten where he came from. Definitely a hidden gem lost to the ages.
San bat liu ching (1993)
Real tears and real joy. Wonderful acting. Great film.
I don't want to give too much away. So I won't say much. But this is a wonderful film. The acting is amazing. The story is heartfelt. It's definitely worth seeing if you can find it. When I found some copies I bought a few just so I could give it away as presents.
