Seven Periods with Mr Gormsby (2005)
This is a must see. It is sad they were only two series.
I saw this simply because of the IMDb rating of 8.7. And that rating is well deserved. It is well acted. It is raucous. It is politically incorrect. It is so very very funny. Normally I don't like this kind of insane kind of humor they just is off the wall but in this one it works perfectly well. This is an ensemble piece all the characters work well with each other playoff of each other and you will certainly enjoy it.
I was afraid I would have a problem with the accent being an American but as it turns out it was easy to understand. Now if you're looking for a good comedy this is the series you should see. I just don't understand why they didn't make more of it.
Barbarian (2022)
Boring Rehash of every bad movie you have ever seen
This is really boring. It just does not scare me at all. I love atmospheric horror movies. This one tries but fails. It takes 20 minutes of movie just to get to the first plot point. ALL they did in that 20 minutes could have been done in 5 minutes. The setup they were trying to do was a red herring. A door opened and we did not see it? Cheap film making! At least give us a little tension. It was boring from the very start. Too much time spent trying to open the door. The phone call that was not even answered. Why? Just a waste of film (or, these days, data bits). Anyway, there is nothing to recommend this. Zombie on the hood or the car and the car stalls out just then. Can you say CLICHE?!?! It has all been done before and done better and faster. Don't bother with this unless you are bored more than anyone has ever been bored before!
Transmorphers (2007)
1977 made for TV quality but made in 1997?
This is really low, disappointing drivel on every level. The writing in inane. It is predictable and just, plain boring except for the times it is cringe-worthy. Plenty sexist for 1997. I wonder if this was a project that was planned for 1977 and was put on the shelf for 25 years then made without rewriting. Then, there's the photography. Lots of it was made in the outside at night. There is unstopping light flashing. I had to look away after a while. It made my eyes hurt while the movie was making my brain hurt. There are no A-list, B-list or C-list actors in this stinkburger. Only no-name actors who, many of whom, were on their first movie. I keep thinking of something nice to say about this to justify the 1 star, but I can't. The 1 star rating is forced by IMDB. Thanks? Don't waste your time on this mess unless you have absolutely nothing better to do, like cleaning the toilet. Yes, it is pretty bad. You have been warned!!
Avenue 5 (2020)
Such potential, but...
It was supposed to be a comedy. For the first episode, it was a riot. By the second episode, I was seeing cracks in the comedy part. By the middle of the second season, it was dead boring with repeated plots that were more boring the second go around.
I really like Hugh Laurie. I liked him in House and everything else I have seen him in. I was ready for a great ride. In the first season, he was great. In the second season, it looked like he was suffering from a migraine headache for the entirety of every episode.
It seems like, in taking 2.5 years off for COVID, the writers could have come up with something interesting. Some more plot twists. But what we got was more of the totally irritating woman he appointed from the guests (and she seemed to have aged 15 years between season 1 and 2) and her incompetent husband. Just more of the same stupid stuff. Very little new.
And, writers, did we have to have a ring of poop (they said the word on the show that I can't type here due to IMDB restrictions) around the spaceship? That was just pathetic. And then to show it in intimate detail and even project a light show on it. And get it all over two spacesuits and come inside with it still all over and smell up the place. That's not humor, that's just, plain gross! Is that humor these days??? Nope, I don't really like seeing poop on a TV show. I have the toilet for that and I don't look at it much there, either!
So with the decline in comedy, the incline in boredom, the irritating characters and lack of utilizing what a huge realm of possibilities they had, I find this is a fail. I gave it 2 stars since it was made. The costumes were nice. The music should have won an award. So there's one star. But, overall, I could not recommend viewing more than, maybe, 2 episodes then moving on. Just not worth it.
Ben & Arthur (2002)
Not so bad assome say. Has a story.
People on here are really trashing this movie. But it 8s not so bad. It has a coherent plot. And that one point is rare on movies these days. The plot is choherent. That, too, is becoming rate. Yes, it has low production values. Yes, all 9f the actors are no name. They do carry it 9ff, though. The audio is good and the music is TV movie quality. So, a 6 for the producers making it and making a point. Ok, I have said it all. It is a tragedy in the worst way. Religion ruining minds and lives (when has it not? Never). So watch it for the story, not as a blockbuster that you will gush over. A small movie with a big heart. Worth a go!
Black Mirror: Bandersnatch (2018)
Somewhat wasted my time
I watched Bandersnatch interactive on Netflix and I feel like I have wasted a bunch of time. Since there is no time par, I don't know for sure. My first clue that I was being gamed was when the thing ran into a dead end and I had to go back and make another choice. So much for "writing your own story line". They do mention at one point that you only have the illusion of control. And that was a self reference. And, then, it just goes round and round and round and I am lost and no longer care how it ends. I am writing this while waiting just a few minutes more but after submitting it, CRASH CITY! What is the point? It is a useless novelty. And a confusing one at that. I found it as a linear file. Maybe, in that one, all of the right decisions are made and the story is coherent.
Don't waste your time on this boring novelty. You won't be happy!
The Menu (2022)
This one grabs you and won't let go
I read some poor reviews of this movie. They are totally incorrect and totally missed the point. There are so many levels to this movie. It has so many different actions and reactions. You really don't have any idea what is coming next but you can't wait to see it. I started out only partially watching this movie as I do with many movies. But by course four, I was totally hooked and had to watch it 100%. I expect it will hit all savvy views the same way. This is one of only a few movies that has so much going on that you cannot afford to look away or you will miss something. Almost every action is part of the plot. I would hate to write a synopsis of this movie. It would run to thousands of words. Full of good viewing. Watch it! No, I am not associated with the movie or any company associated with the movie.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Somewhat interesting, very odd but pleasing in a way
I entered into this thinking it would be something much extreme. It is a slow burn. You don't really find out much of anything until the end. It was very confusing to try to figure out what was what. And, I guess that was the intention since this was billed as something of a strange series. Well, they were right. It had a feeling of completeness at the end but I can't describe it. I was somewhat wanting another season but I was sure there never would be one. The creator spoke of endless stories due to the unlimited potential of total fantasy. It held together a bit but was odd. Not for everyone. I like it, a little... not a lot, but would watch another season.
