Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Civilization Conflict: Way of Seeing...
Yes, the film is visually stunning... Nobody has seen anything like this before! So what? Most of us (the earth people) are still watching without seeing... and many of us are still complaining about the "plot holes"... The people with the physically intact eyes... and these ones are still so blind... Unfortunately!...
Blind to see the core conflict of our human (planetary) Civilization...
As the great Russian poet once put it writing:
"A fairytale is a lie (of course), but the right people see its Hint".
And that Hint, as seen from my subjective point of view, of the Avatar fairytale is as follows:
"Sky People" of "Avatar" are the obvious and picturesque representation of the Western Civilization from the planet Earth and its way of treating (oppressing) the "indians" and other human (intelligent) species from the "rest of the world".
And "Navi people of Pandora" are representing the essential values and the core Spirit of the Russian Civilization and its way of incorporating the different nations into One (planetary) Civilization, which is NOT melting but safely keeping (defending and enriching) all unique pecularities of each kind.
That is why "quaritchies of all kinds" hate Russia and Russians so much, I guess...
God bless and protect James Cameron from "the global quaritchies" who think that Cameron betrayed "their kind"!.. Just leave the director alone and let him finish his Universal work. Who knows, may be, Jake and Quaritch could finally make Peace.. Just because, they BOTH LOVE their children equally, at least... and because we, people of the Earth, don't and won't have another spare "Pandora" available! For obvious reasons Mars does not count. If you do not agree, just for comparison, rewatch the "Ad astra" (2019) with Brad Pitt. It is our cosmic reality and real perspectives on that account.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
The best compliment to the Russian aviation ever made
Compare for yourself:
"Top Gun" movie of 1986 shows us very arrogant American pilots literally giving "fingers" to Russian MIGs. Any viewer sees the pilot characters, who OWN the skies at that time with the most modern and indisputably superior aircrafts in the world.
What do we see in "Top Gun: Maverick" of 2022 apart from the undisputable cinematographic superiority shown to us? First of all, the total change of core tonality of the film.... Now the characters are literally scared to death of old(!) Russian anti-aircraft systems and SUKHOI warplanes... Now it's not some "Top Gun" school flights, including "teaching" MIGs how to fly, but some reality check...
That is why, all that bravado and the "finger-giving festival" had gone now... Nothing to say about the real development of the combat-approved (not only test) planes in the USAF...
And I'm sorry to "bust someone's bubble" or whether someone likes it or not....
The Russians definetely didn't waste their time... since their defeat: the USSR collapse and the US victory in the Cold War, declared at the US Congress on January 28,1992 by G. H. W. Bush himself. (Make your own fact-check, if needed)
And BTW, those Russian "4++" and 5th generation planes are not some test-ones at present. They are the mass-regular-weapons of the Russian Air Force, whose pilots are not just Hollywood dummies still playing giveaway games so pleasing for the audience... Though, I am sure, every real pilot in the world enjoyed the cinematography of the movie as well as everyone else....
So, the Maverick movie is not only the perfect cinematic experience for "Top Gun" fans, but also, as already mentioned, a "reality check" for everyone who is able to think and can add "2 plus 2"... Impeccable unchanged winning on screen is one (very pleasant) thing. Winning in battle including the real-plane-technology-development is totally different one. Because, the deceived in 1991 (with false peace&liberal propaganda) people of the "defeated" USSR have learned their bitter lesson well, I guess...
("You have no idea of what I'm talking about, I'm sure..." - as Lester Burnham said in the end of "American Beauty" movie (1999) - "But don't worry... you will... someday..." This quote is none even hint of a threat to anyone; it's just a sincere wish to let a reader grasp someday the point of that Deception since Mr. Gorbachev has "ended the Cold War", sacrificing his country for "World Peace" and "New thinking" brotherhood era...)
And again, the acting job of the pilot-team in the movie is the "cutting edge" of the Hollywood industry. No doubt.
Don't Look Up (2021)
Fairytale is a lie, but there's a Hint in it...
The movie is about us(!) on the global scale. The hint is about the "leadership" Obama once called - American exceptionalism - mostly feeling of superiority of those individuals who considers themselves - global elites (completely incompetemt, corrupt and craze "leaders"} over the rest of the people on the planet. On the other hand, the movie lets anyone take a look at ourselves from "outside" or rather "look inside oneself (us) before it's too late when real problems happen...
Wrath of Man (2021)
another revenge sh.t
Technically it is ok.
But after the absolutely brilliant "Revolver", Guy Ritchie should be ashamed of such (i have no decent words for it) except...
Disappointment.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Bad Manipulation (Fairytale is a lie but there's a big hint in it)
This movie, in the whole, is an example of clever hidden propaganda of "Supremacy" over Lawful (equal&just) Approach to the solving of Big (common) world problems.
The scenario is badly mis-using the "father-daughter" higher feelings to promote the worst Manipulation.
Manipulation Meaning:
"If something, such as "world law", United Nations or "Mean Moody Russians" are stopping you from reaching your "lofty goals", then f.ck them all (all law, order and justice).
Let people who like this movie think the following dilemma over:
"The Great Cause (The Goal) _justifies_ means of its reaching"
or
"The Great Cause _is justified_ by means of its reaching".
What is right? What approach do you choose for yourself?
The most important things are hidden with their simplicity...
(From Russia with Love...)
War Machine (2017)
This is a Hollywood version of Nikolai Gogol's "Dead souls". Definitely a masterpiece.
The title of the film - "War machine" - fully reflects the very essence of the military-political machine as well as the deep essence of the personality of General Glen.
The catchphrase is a quote from the movie: "These guys thought they were the most important guys in the world."..
It is unlikely that I will spoil someone's viewing of the film, if I say that it is the integrity, rightness & this excessively inflated "importance of the mission" (that is "EGO", false "I") which leads to the mechanical inadequacy of the main character, devoid of a _measure of distinction_. Plus nothing to add for the "happy" General's wife, for example. Unfortunately, the process of inner degradation is so irrevocable that "integrity and uprightness" practically deprive all these characters of the opportunity to realize the horror of emasculation ("robotization") of their souls, lacking true deep sense of unity with other people.
Sad but true, the Oscar was given not to this masterpiece, but to the pseudo-patriotic "The Hurt Locker" with its primitive motto: "war is a drug"... (((
P.S. Brad Pitt - brilliant play!!!
Elysium (2013)
Non-equal dignity of people is normal?
The good special effects and other "top-gear" junk&stuff are just wraps for the basic idea which is being propagandized and blessed by "god": the "elite" with money can treat other people (crowd) like animals (waste material). And the "biggest" dream of this waste material (animal crowd) is to get themselves up to Elysium and get well. No character does not even try to give a thought that this whole "elite-crowd" society idea is the biggest crime against Humanity itself. In the first place. The "big victory" in the movie's end is a pure coincidence, which will not change anything: the same old animal instincts, "joys", fight for power and resources. This is the whole "masterpiece".
Gorko! (2013)
the ending of the movie is what matters most
Contrary to my expectations i liked the movie. For many recent years - it's the best that I have watched and enjoyed: the movie presents all the wonderful nature of such phenomena as the wedding and all that goes with it.
Please, do not try to see and evaluate this movie through "civilized" eyes. In this case, you will see only drunken Russians, fights and all other stuff, inappropriate for "educated people": you'll be unable appreciate the gift that is hidden in the movie's ending.
Spoiler: It is much like the "Wedding of Figaro": Love and Forgivness Win in the end. The newlyweds truly love and forgive each other, the papa finally respects his son-in-law and forgives the guy, who shot his leg.
From superficial point of view all those Russians seem to be savages... So do not try to see, feel it, if you are still able of having fun and sincerity for it.
All can not be expressed in such a short amount of words and it is not the goal. Just want to express my sheer joy and encourage you to view it personally. Big L wins!
Habemus Papam (2011)
personal aspiration and the disillusioning experience
IMHO, the paradox and the highlight of the movie is that the main character - the newly elected Pope, saying "no" under such public pressure, found extraordinary inner strength and honesty, which outwardly had been manifesting as "tiredness and weakness".
In my opinion, this movie is equally true to (any) all official Church denominations (not only the Catholic Church). here i want to make an important reservation: i don't mean to hurt anybody's feelings. i am in great awe and reverence to any monotheism and/or spiritual feats of all the saints of all religions. However, to my mind, this film is mostly intended for the people, who, for various reasons, have lost their personal (direct) aspiration to God and rely more on their priests and/or the rightness of their Church's teachings. Most likely they will find it hard to accept this movie, because it is difficult to see and accept that their (respective) Main Church Leader is just an ordinary man, who doubts and seeks God, as well as any other mortal being does and that any official Church denomination is mostly a "Big Theater" with its backstage, where quite earthly problems are being resolved. that is why it may come as a big dis-llusioning experience. but as the spells are disappearing, i believe, this movie is a great gift to all of us, no matter what faith denomination we are considered to be.
The Ledge (2011)
not another love story.... aftertaste of two kinds...
This movie has least to do with sex relations of man and woman...
In my view, the main research of this movie is the significant differences between church dogma and fanaticism (of any confession or faith) AND true Love, Sacrifice, Faith.
The main character (Gavin) is real Hero, who has made true heroic deed for Love: gave the biggest Sacrifice and by the way has changed the cop's life for the better.
Joe Harris (Shana's husband) - is a snob-jihad-er who proclaimed "holy war" of his own under the banner of Christian baptist faith (in this particular case). His arrogance and fanaticism are of direct evidence, but he significantly lacks the feeling of Love in his soul to connect the opposites (Loss of wife and Love for God). Very fanatic but sad...
Shana has been able to save her feeling of Love in her soul (she refused to hate her former husband for killing the man she truly loved).
Unfortunately, there are some drawbacks (subjective view)
1) there's no need to be politically correct (to promote) "gay" lifestyle to make clear the main ideas (including, the idea of tolerance to one's neighbor).
2) The main character (Gavin) is an atheist (although seeking for truth), the movie leaves the viewer with aftertaste of two kinds:
- on one hand, we witness the Heroic Deed for Love; - on the other hand, in the end we smell the motive: «let's not touch that god!»
there is "no god"... i can admit this too... at least in dogmatic, church understanding... However, it's for Love (not some desire or obsession) one can consciously sacrifice his Life... without this "Leap to nowhere", Sacrifice, Faith without these concepts our life remains just of intellectual animals (sometimes a very comfortable one).
...the movie is a masterpiece with some polit-correctness twists.
Limitless (2011)
direct drug-addiction propaganda
OK, I would like to be clear: I really liked the actors and other artistic aspects of this movie, such as: music or camera work. It is a really talented art-piece. However, if the purpose of this movie was the drug propaganda then it is a complete success: to solve any of your life-problems just take the "right" drugs and just make sure that you won't ever run out of these pills! How great is that! IMHO, the plot would be more sensible and breathtaking if the Robert De Niro (for example) had to fight this new "genious-on-drugs" with all his spirit and life experience. But what we see in the end: De Niro could ruin this drug-guy just with revealing the truth to the public (who wants to have as the President another drug-addict?) But instead the looser wins! Oh, what a revelation!!!!
Utomlennye solntsem 2: Tsitadel (2011)
this part completes the whole
Just from the theater... Wow! i'm so grateful for Mr.Mikhalkov that he has completed one of his best works. "Burnt by the sun" consists of three parts and you should watch from the first part to understand the whole story in details. each scene of the sequel is a small movie in the movie and these different scenes form a very detailed sensational EXPERIENCE of the Stalin's tyranny and the Great Patriotic War for the Soviet people. Like i said before, there is no sense to look for documentary strictness in this _fictional_ war story but what an amazing intrinsic truth of the war and the tyranny in this movie! This picture shows to a viewer what a man is and how easy to break and manipulate anybody with fear. or, for example,if you want an answer to a question: "why, in the the end, the Soviets won that war?" watch the final scene with a Russian old woman defending a mind-sick German soldier... however its better to watch the whole "Burnt by the sun" from the beginning to the end in one take for yourself.
Everest: Beyond the Limit (2006)
Just Amazing!!!
I once enjoyed watching movie named "Vertical Limit" - a true hint of mountaineer's consciousness and spirit. Only this time the highest Mountain will put mens' guts to the test you can find nowhere else.
The cameramen-sherpas have done outstanding job so the viewer is literally on the mountain with the expedition members witnessing their pain and struggle, defeat and victory. Plus the panorama views are almost to die for. This is the rarest scenery I have seen in my life so far! Both seasons are strongly recommended!
However, may be, people who have never been to the mountains themselves will not be able to appreciate in full this excitement, almost awe of the mens' spirit. :(
Overall, for me it's like the final breakthrough of Tim Robbins in "Shawshank Redemtion" only this time there are real people not just movie characters.
Utomlennye solntsem 2 (2010)
To most esteemed audience of the Discovery Channel! if you want to know what was the WWII for the Soviet Union watch this movie
this movie is well worth seeing for yourself, better in a theater. don't expect easy watching or smoothly developing events. The plot of the movie is a creative invention - a fiction story - which is skillfully entwined with the real war events. However, in the film there is amazingly precise and piercing truth of what really war is, what terrible mash it was for all and each. This is a large-scale movie with a large-scale shooting. i'm sure the negative criticism will disappear like suds, and this PICTURE remains. This is what the world should know about the Great Patriotic War of the Soviet Union, what price our people paid to understand what war is indeed. and IMHO this is what the decent, successful, happy people (which you&we all are) should remember forever to keep peace on this planet.
Shutter Island (2010)
looks like an anecdote... laughable, sad
after the trailer i nearly expected something as insightful as the "Green Mile" by Frank Darabont...
Though professionally made "SH.tter Island" just reminded me of an anecdote, when after some intensive mental treatment, a doctor is sure that his patient is cured at last. The doctor is very pleased to get all the right answers from the patient confirming that he is mentally well and sound now. And when they are about to say their good-byes the patient makes some innocent comment proving that there was NO miraculous cure... everything was in vain... Numb scene... Curtain... Laughable, sad but simple truth about this movie. However, IMHO, it takes too much time and cinematography to tell this nice little anecdote.
Oldeuboi (2003)
artistic perfection vs. any values and sense - "Oscar" for mind-screwing hardcore....
i carefully watched this from the beginning to the credits. The first half of the film raised my expectations of masterpiece and of deep insights to the top, but the rest turned out to be a major disaster.
the only thing that left me with my mouth open is the question: why? i'm not pretending to be any moralist here, but why try so hard to make a "hardcore puke" look so beautiful
if higher goal of this "masterpiece" is to make "vomit" attractive then this is a complete success - art for the sake of art at its best. IMHO, it doesn't matter how much realistic or surrealistic, or sophisticated can be a "porn-for-your-brain" it gives nothing but distict feeling of disgust in the end (for a sane person).
The Hurt Locker (2008)
this "war-propaganda-flick" for Oscar!? who's kidding: academics or politicians?
I decided to watch this one because it's been nominated for Oscar this year. I guess as many folks here I really wanted to like this movie, but ended up bored and disappointed. First scene was OK but the whole rest of the movie in "shaky hands" camera mode is really annoying.
i guess the main reason for making such a movie and nominating it for Oscar is this:
American "military machine" (people, who makes money on war) urgently need an excuse or justification of war in Iraq by bungling up something (sort of) patriotic.
why these "heroic" efforts of director and the main character to _inspire_ the audience with an idea of "loving-war-like-a-drug"?.. Oh, please, come on! what a bore!
watch this to get an idea of how low the movie academy can fall...
Avatar (2009)
Avatar - Way of Heart (definitely a masterpiece)
Wow! Bravo James Cameron! Nothing I have seen so far was so breathtaking! Special effects are another breakthrough! Well worth to see it for yourself in a theater.
Mainly this movie gives us (the humanity) a chance to look in the mirror (which is not especially pleasant) and to survive as species.
However, people who let their minds consider themselves "the crown of evolution" will not grasp the Idea and will not like the movie. For them, the main character remains a mere traitor. (oh, what should i say! what a pity!)
We, people, have our mechanical toys OK, but watching this movie made me for the first time feel (indeed) that "advanced" people from a mechanical civilization have _nothing_ valuable to offer for such "usual barbarians" as Navi, who are living in perfect balance at Pandora planet and in perfect harmony with every creature.
Definitely I want to see this movie again.
Gran Torino (2008)
big difference from "Seven Pounds" by Will Smith
Great movie! Bravo Mr. Eastwood! As well as I join those who loved this movie, I think this one was also especially for those who liked "Seven Pounds" by Will Smith, where Will showed some persuasive acting, however, the basic idea of "Seven Pounds" really sucked - i.e diagnosis: "un-trivial-exotic form of suicide from unbearable sense of guilt with further distribution of spare organs in attempt to justify oneself" instead of providing valuable honest longterm service for people.
In "Gran Torino" Mr. Eastwood's character has shown us real man's Courage and has made true Sacrifice for the love of people (not guilt). To me, this is an example worth Respect comparing to some mere try to squeeze tears of awe of a sophisticated suicide... (IMHO)
Synecdoche, New York (2008)
What for?
just watched this movie and without irony want to say: this movie is incredibly TALENTED, precise, touching, caring, piercing, most gigantic in the history of cinematography - picking in one's own sh.t! this unique taste of meaningless tragedy is hard to spit out.
No doubt everybody who worked on this movie did a great job! Acting is perfect, the director has made his point. Make-up is perfect! Decorations and graphic effects are perfect.
And what is left after all? Why spend these efforts to get such huge can of human crap out of inside and than make this peculiar analysis for such a long time?
Loving Annabelle (2006)
a joke from a Russian showman!!!!
I rather enjoyed this story of girl-woman seduction. Of course, LOVE is what matters most not the human sex...
However, (as a male) I can express my general impression of this movie in a few phrases of a famous Russian humorist - Mikhail Zhvanetskiy - who once said:
"Nowadays, everybody loves each other but we (men) still love women!" As a heterosexual man, I subscribe to this point of view... :-) i'm sorry these women could not (didn't want to) attract right men in their lives... just to keep universal balance for a change... ;-)
P.S. Lesbian women! even if you hate me i still like you and respect you as human beings.
American Beauty (1999)
American Beauty - Human mind is not enough...
This movie is the most beautiful diamond of so many sides...
Though perfectly made the movie gives this message also: The most important things in life cannot be seen (realised) only with physical eyes or human mind. It takes heart to realize! No words or logic suffice... Take time! Don't let anything or anybody distract you! Look closer! If you are lucky, you will be rewarded with indescribable feeling of IT! There's no hatred or intolerance in this movie but Beauty and Love.
To those who has already experienced this movie: Just for example, imagine this: Movie ends. Lester is murdered... Police arrives... The only character above suspicion is his real murderer. Other characters leave a lot of evidence and a bunch of motives to kill Lester. Some jury returns a WELL-GROUNDED verdict but they just cannot have a clue of what really happened. What about justice then? Nobody is able to do this using only mind and logics, sometimes they are not enough...
