Dark Signal (2016)
the ACTRESS does a great job!
wow hard to fathom how people trash this actress! i found her believable and enchanting! from scene one she conveys her disturbed mental- emotional state. she follows through maintaining a mental disturbance that's subtle and quite genuine! being an actor and director myself i think i know what I'm commenting on. she plays crazed very well and shes beautiful. perhaps the critics here are JEALOUS? The film is shot with great lighting and stark minimalism. I love the isolation! the music is magnetic and it all drew me in to keep watching! ( Netflix is enticing to switch films non stop if boring) so i stuck with this having to see the outcome. its also SEXY dare i say! i dug it!!!
Candy's Room: Soleil Noir (2011)
Candy's room
Candys Room was nominated for Best Writer, Best Feature and Best actress in Downbeach film festival as well as getting rave revues such as in Splatted Image film magazine as " magical and intoxicatingly beautiful." The design and imagery is very cutting edge and may not be to the sensibilities of reviewers used to a typical linear film style. It features Manga cartoon images and an amazing soundtrack by Fernando Abrantes (former Kraftwerk member). Not everyone may be capable of getting what this experimental high brow film is. Its shot in grainy black and white and features a cast of upcoming young talented actors. Its a dark Gothic story of abandonment, violence and drugs by rich dysfunctional kids. Its not available commercially at this juncture since it is being shown in art venues and galleries.
Paranormal Activity 4 (2012)
Good up to the ending...Spoilers ALERT!
I was able to suspend belief and anticipation and just follow along on the slow and at times tepid plot and settings. The cute kids are the focus of the film and that may draw the youth fans but its rather redundant after a bit with no real scares or highlights. Vague goings on surround a creepy little boy who is planted in the family and bonds with the little brother living there, after his mysterious mom their neighbor falls ill one night. The teenage sister has her reservations and she and her boyfriend plant camera's and computers around the house after the creepy neighbor kid is recorded on a computer at her bedside seems he got in bed with her one night, he's about 8 so no dirty business. Its also made known that she's a VIRGIN by her sharp charming boyfriend who is sufficiently teen obnoxious. The kids do a great job acting and are quite believable as just kids doing their thing. That's how I was able to go along on the journey so long. The kid wears Jesus boots and ill fitting clothes he doesn't change the entire 2 week duration of the time-line. After boy moves he has a lot of nocturnal habits that involve shadowy figure that are never clearly defined or fleshed out. It wasn't a bad journey even though it was slow at some points and very few things really happened other than a few moments of scare in your face tactics. My problem came with the very anti-climactic ending. The writer took the fast easy cheap way out.Like oh well I got this far so Ill just end it quick. It really came as a big disappointment when it could have ended in a much more satisfying way, even just by blacking out the camera's...instead its a whole new VILLAIN in the form of a witch coven. Uh duh writers...keep your thread here its a better story...the end was incomplete and a real let down after I followed you that long!I think its bearable on the big screen only! So go to a theater if you're a fan of the series.
Fighting Nirvana (2009)
Warm and dark
This small budget film has an engaging quality that makes one keep watching even when the pace slows up.The characters are all different enough that individual personalities come through and we latch on to our favorites. Everyone is like someone we know or perhaps like us. There are two guys and two girls. One of the guys a stranger to the girls who are sisters. They've come together this evening for a common purpose. That seems to get sidelined as they engage in conflict and healing among each other. It had a spooky quality and was very self-contained. All the aspects worked nicely in the constraints of the setting and theme. I was hooked and kept watching till the 'surprise" ending. It's a good date movie or one to watch when you really want to focus in on an interesting plot and quirky yet natural characters.Overall a good effort by all.
Mummy Maniac (2007)
I actually liked it!
Considering it's limited dialogue and location and actors I think it was pretty cool. You had to take the journey with the writer on this one. Seems they have a pretty good handle on psychology. I liked the set-ups and the implications. The sets were nicely done for the budget. The gimmicks were cool, the mothers face etc and random death scenes. They made it for like $350 or some low amount.BTW Lionsgate bought it and distributes it so how's that for success! I liked the music too. It's worth watching I think and I've seen higher budgets that suck and are boring, much worse than this offering. The editing was pretty tight too and everything worked in my opinion. The weakest point was it had no real story, you made it up as you went along.
Gag (2006)
I Loved it, it was riveting!
What do people expect when they see a low budget $40,000- budget movie? Graphics and Fx dazzlers are for kiddie movies. The plot is twisted and takes you with it on it's intended journey. I think the men watching it are put off by it's possible homo-erotic intonations and that make them forget the story. I love the stark dirty setting. The lighting was poor but it worked for what the mood was. A plot point happened every fifteen seconds. Let's see how many of the critics can write like that even at your best efforts. I commend the writer. It's a pressure cooker scenario and it is intense. It also has things that I've never seen such as the anal rape scene of a male. It isn't exactly rape but torture and very nicely contrived as a payoff to one characters weakness. The psycho lives up to his role nicely too. I say definitely watch it. I give it an eight. You can learn a lot from the way these filmmakers operated!
