What can I say - I'm a fan of this sort of horror-gore-torture films, and this was right up my alley. It played out a lot like "Carver", another excellent horror movie. There were some original methods used to kill people in the film, and the bad guys were especially gruesome. I guess I'm in the minority when I say I loved this movie, but it just goes to show that there isn't any one style of movie that is right or wrong. If you like the horror-gore genre, I definitely recommend you check this out. If you are more concerned with quality acting, then don't (although I will say that I was so focused on the action that I didn't notice anything wrong with the acting, although the foreign accent did seem a bit odd.)
I went to see this movie today, with hopes that it would involve an at least half-intelligent story. I was extremely disappointed, as it did not. The plot, and the decisions by the main character, were so far-fetched. I was hoping for a "Dog Day Afternoon"-type movie, but instead got something totally unacceptable. I actually found myself totally hoping for the "hero" to be knocked off, and I nearly walked out of the theater on several occasions when this should have happened but didn't. Heist movies are notmeant to be feel-good flicks, and this one tried to be just that. Every couple of minutes during the second half of the movie, I found myself saying, "no way". Without giving the whole story away, it revolved around an armored car guard who was financially down and out, and whose house was going into foreclosure. He was invited in on a heist, and accepted, only to back down once the action began. Weak.
Let me start out by saying that, even before watching the movie through, I played the opening scene/opening credits over 8 or 9 times. I'm not kidding - in fact, I've just rewound it to listen to it/watch it as I write this review. It is incredibly disturbing, between the obscure song playing and the goriness of it all. I mean, the opening credits alone could have been a short movie worthy of a 10. The cinematography and sound of the opening are unlike anything I've ever seen. Awesome. Anyway, this is actually the first review I've ever written, but didn't want this incredible movie to go unnoticed by the rest of you gore/horror/torture fans out there. And the fact that it is supposedly a true story made it that much better! I rank this up there with the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Kudos to the writer/director!!! However, my disclaimer is...If you're not a fan of excessive gore, serial killers, and the horror genre in general, you probably won't appreciate this film.
