nearly 50% of people gave it a 10, but 10% of people gave it a 1 only. The movie trashers certainly are gaining momentum, this movie used to be rated about 8.5 as the Cannes critics love it, but once you show it to the uneducated Chinese audience, all they think of is how this movie suck up to the west(btw, I disagree with that), but completely forget that they love Hollywood trash like King Arthur.
I know I am a bit extreme at the moment, but Chinese audience are always the first to diss Chinese film, they laugh at CTHD, they laugh at Hero and they laugh at House of Flying daggers (look at the comment in theses film). The moment that we have got a hit film in the west, people turn up at the cinema with high expectation, if the film did not reach that expectation, it is at once labelled as the biggest piece of trash in history or "overrated" because it is so easy to pan a commercially successful movie.
I don't know, this is not a great film, but it is not bad at all, to see that so many people come here just to give it a 1 to prove that they are critics just makes me feel sad.

After enjoying the excellent In the Heat of the Day, I really looked forward to watching this movie and had high expectation on it, and I certainly wasn't disappointed.
This movie is a tragi-comedy about the Japanese invasion of China, which of course is no laughing matter, but this movie is genuinely funny and never falls into the bad taste category because it shows you the brutality of war and how it affects the Chinese people (albeit from a different angle than one would expect).
The ending, which I am not going to give away, is excellent and I think it is the most courageous war movie ending I have ever seen. However, one thing about Jiang Wen's movies is that they are so technically interesting that it is difficult to see what his movie is about as a whole.
Anyway, I highly recommend this film.

This movie is much more than I expected, the 70s mainstream movie by a mainstream director has more eroticism and violence in it than most movies dared now. However, it is not a movie that simply tries to shock and push boundaries, it is a movie about injustice done to women and poor while the persecutor only care for the rich. The revenge story is restrained at first deliberately and the revenge escalates into a full blood bath at the end when Ai Nu finally let all of her fury comes out, it is easy to see the feminist movement connection.
I also thought the cinematography is beautiful, especially at the beginning when camera captures the slow dance of Ai Nu in contrast to the corpse covered by snow.
The fight scene is also rather good. In other words, a perfect 10/10.
