This old house is creepy...and haunted!
Hard to get the atmosphere just right, but evil is here. Daniel (Rodolfo Sancho) and his wife Sara (Belen Fabra) are refurbishing an old house in the middle of nowhere. They are good at flipping property, but there is a lot of work to be done here. Young son Eric (Lucas Bias) begins to hear unstable voices behind walls and doors. He keeps in touch with his dad by way of "walkies". But Eric's sadness causes him to see a home therapist. The young boy is able to draw pictures that tell the future. As much as Sara guards her son, she is the last to recognize his strange abilities let alone believe in the voices he's hearing. Music in the film is eerie and plays heavy on your anticipation. This old house is for sure haunted.
Raptor (2001)
Somedays you can hide from fear
This is a direct-to-video horror flick directed by Jim Wynorski and produced by the infamous Roger Corman. Right off it needs to be said that some dinosaur footage is re-used from previous Corman -produced movies.
Sheriff Tanner (Eric Roberts) and his assistant Barbara Phillips (Melissa Brasselle) start investigating scores of unexplained vicious animal attacks. All sorts of crazy ideas are fielded from the public, but more intelligent clues trace back to a Dr. Hyde (Corbin Bernsen) , who lost government funding for a dinosaur cloning project. The Pentagon discovers Hyde managed to get foreign backing.
Hazy lazy film making. The script and acting are laughable. Special effects are right up with some of the worse. I doubt if watching this drunk would help it much.
Octopus (2000)
Was this a high school film project?
During the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962, a Russian submarine was sunk carrying barrels nuclear materials trying to out maneuver an American sub. The Russian, sub totally destroyed, leaked enough toxic material to cause an octopus to grow into a monster.
Almost four decades later, the CIA captures a dangerous terrorist in Bulgaria and is assigned to take the villain secretly to the US via submarine to be judged. The American sub is hijacked before it is attacked by the mega octopus.
American made-for-television filmed in Bulgaria. The cast includes: Jay Harrington, David Beecroft, Ravil Isyanov, Carolyn Lowery and Rico Ross. Sorry, but this thing slides to the dumpster pretty quick. Don't blink too many times in fear of missing the movie's namesake.
Blade (1998)
Notice who walks among you
Half-man/half-vampire, his mother died of a bite on the neck, Blade (Wesley Snipes), becomes a protector of the mortal race. Nicknamed the "Daywalker", he can leap off tallest of buildings and has other- worldly strengths and supernatural attributes to use in his personal grudge to hunt down and destroy vampires. He doesn't himself crave the red stuff, thanks to a daily dietary supplement offered by a fatherly friend named Whistler (Kris Kristofferson).
Blade will interrupt gangs of bloodsuckers preparing for communal massacres. He takes on a shadowy overlord Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff) that just tired of living in harmony with humans. Phenomenal action scenes, strong and disturbing images and bloody chaos. You won't be able to sit still for very long.
There's Something Wrong with the Children (2023)
Overlooked potential
What could have been...just wasn't. Tension and a bit scary. Margaret (Alisha Wainwright) and Ben (Zach Gilford) decide on a little weekend trip with friends Ellie (Amanda Crew) and Thomas (Carlos Santos) ,who bring along two children. Staying at a campsite with campfire, a lot of booze and swapping stories at each others expense under the stars.
The next day is devoted to camping where a mysterious well is found. The two kids seem to be mesmerized by it. Margaret offers to watch the kids, Spenser and Lucy, as their parents want to go on a private date. The kids are missing the next morning, because they've gone back to the well. Ben finds the children and swears he sees them fall into the well. Latter the sad news is told to the kid's parents. But low and behold, the children are back frolicking around the campsite unscathed. The children soon begin acting maliciously. Why and why now? Of course, something is wrong with the kids!
I See You (2019)
A cop with too much on his mind
A 12-year old boy Justin Whitter (Riley Caya) is reported missing. Detectives discover a green pocket knife at the scene, which harkens back to a 15-year kidnapping case. Young boys were disappearing and a calling card in the form of a green knife were found. The kidnapper was captured and jailed closing the case.
Trusty Detective Greg Harper (Jon Tenney) catches this new case and it begins to cause a struggle for Greg to cope with. The detective is married to a wealthy doctor, Jackie (Helen Hunt), part of a tense family disturbance. Their son, Connor (Judah Lewis), has taken sides with his dad. Jackie is really becoming a problem getting her grip on reality. She believes a malicious entity has manifested itself in the household and it begins to gnaw away at her recognizing reality. This is a slow burner with crazy plot twists. ,
Morbius (2022)
A "living vampire"
Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto) is a Noble Prize winner that has a crippling blood disease. The celebrity scientist/doctor is backed by big money via the Crown's family fortune. But Milo Crown (Matt Smith) a close friend turns adversary and himself becoming a vampire. The big breakthrough comes with the experiment of splicing vampire bat DNA with his own...leading Morbius into an uncontrollable killing machine. Ostensibly law enforcement led by the FBI do very little good tracking Morbius, leading to the thought: is vampirism addictive. An escalating body count caused by Morbius seems to draw little sympathy from the "Living Vampire". Director Daniel Espinosa seems to rely on heavy CGI with sketchy camerawork. The cast is rounded out with Adria Arjona, Al Madrigal, Jared Harris and Michael Keaton.
Colt .45 (1950)
New repeating pistols in the old west.
This is a 1950 film from American Western starring matinee idol Randolph Scott. Set in the town of Red Rock, Steve Farrell (Scott) is demonstrating new Colt .45 repeating pistols to the local sheriff (Alan Hale). Several men come into the office to transfer a prisoner to another jail. The prisoner Jason Brett (Zachary Scott) nabs the pistols, shoots the sheriff, and makes his getaway. The salesman is accused of being part of the robbery, so the townspeople arrest Farrell. The escaped Brett goes on a robbery spree with cold blooded murders. Ordinary weapons are no match for the new Colt .45s.
Typical Saturday matinee fare with plenty of action. The cast also features Lloyd Bridges, Ruth Roman, Tex Cooper, Chief Thundercloud, Monte Blue and Ian MacDonald.
3 Bed, 2 Bath, 1 Ghost (2023)
Real surprise from the Hallmarck Channel.
Other Hallmark features would be so lucky to fare as well as this. Affable real-life couple Chris McNally and Julie Gonzalo star in this fun time movie. Anna (Gonzalo) is a real estate agent under some pressure to sell an older estate. She discovers the home is still occupied by...a live-in ghost. The active spirit of a 1920's flapper Ruby Baker (Madeleine Arthur) has no intentions of leaving. But she will agree to vacate, if agent Anna will try to get back together with her ex (McNalley). A ghost with a heart, emotion and deep admiration of romance.
Arthur steals this show, with her beautiful blue eyes, gaiety and convincing sentiment. She is perfectly cast thanks to her engaging expression, comedic and entertainment skills. Would like to see more of her.
Poor Things (2023)
Brilliant new classic.
I don't want to spoil this for you; but you are in for a treat. A comedy sci-fi that also can be considered one of the raunchiest films in a long time. Emma Stone delivers her best performance to date. She plays Bella Baxter, a Frankenstein-type monster brought to life by the unorthodox scientist Dr. Goodwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Bella craves to learn the worldliness she is lacking. She runs off with a debauched lawyer Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), and begins an adventurous journey across continents. A weird and crazy relationship is formed and Bella becomes just short of being a sex maniac. Duncan goes through a mental breakdown and Bella does her best to getaway from him and return home to Dr. Baxter.
Not only is Stone award-worthy in this role, Ruffalo turns in an enchanting career-best effort. Poor Things is a positive no-miss.
Talk to Me (2022)
Insidious and chaotic horror.
When young people feel boredom crashing in on them, they will stoop to anything...even commune with the dead. A group of teens needing some thrills choose a party game that rapidly goes wrong. Holding a dead hand and reciting "Talk to me. Talk to me"; their bodies are consumed by random ghastly spirits. The game has rules, but the boundaries are pushed to the limits of disturbing horror. Each player has a mind altering experience.
Filmmaker brothers Danny and Michael Philippou's debut is a winner. It is visceral, blood-boiling and show-stopping. Some viewers may find this a bit messed up and hard to stomach. The cast is not shabby at all and features Sophie Wilde, Alexandria Jensen, Hamish Phillips, Jayden Davison, Joe Bird and Kit Erhart-Bruce.
IO (2019)
Is there any hope for a devistated Earth?
A post-apocalyptic Earth has become toxic and uninhabitable. Most of humanity has left to colonize one of Jupiter's moons called IO. The film is set in a small pocket of the planet that is livable where young scientist Sam Walden (Margaret Qualley), continues her father's (Danny Huston) work studying climate change. The goal is to see if the world can reset and renew itself. Of course, this venture provides very little hope.
Sam sends out daily radio transmissions to see if she can locate anyone else. Behold, a visitor, Micah (Anthony Mackie), lands a makeshift helium balloon. Believing survival is doomed, Micah tries to talk Sam into catching a final shuttle to the colony on IO.
Thanksgiving (2023)
Thanksgiving... a season for killing
Eli Roth directs and shares co-writing duties on this weird holiday offering. I can't say you'll have room for leftovers or not. The tables are about to be set in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where Thanksgiving is not taken lightly. There is a different feeling after last year's Black Friday riot that ended in tragedy. A serial killer seemed to have troubles with the festive spirit and had a "hankerin" for chaos and started killing residents at random, or was there some methodology involved? What set this lunatic off and will he try his murderous shenanigans again? The streets and businesses are guarded against a future slaughter.
This sinister twisted holiday flick stars: Patrick Dempsey, Gina Gershon, Rick Hoffman, Nell Vertaque and Jalen Thomas Brooks. And how about a festive soundtrack featuring: "Highway In The Wind" by Arlo Guthrie, "Three Lock Box" by Sammy Hagar and "Shooting Star" by Danny O'Keefe.
Killers of the Flower Moon (2023)
Osage tribe riches are stolen.
David Grann's novel should be an Oklahoma school history staple. Famed Martin Scorsese directs this much hyped film with a standout cast led by Leonardo DiCaprio, Lily Gladstone and Robert De Niro. Set in in 1920's Oklahoma and referred to as the Reign of Terror, depiction of serial murders of oil-rich peoples of the Osage Indian Nation.
Appalling and inhuman, the Osage people were driven from their lands in Kansas and put upon rocky northern Oklahoma that would later become immensely rich in oil deposits. The more wealthy the native peoples became, the mineral rights became subject of greed and jealousy. Graft and chicanery steadily ran rampant. Small pieces of land were purchased and wealthy Osage women were being married by white men.
Things got worse as the wealthy Osage were poisoned, shot and blown to bits as they slept in their homes. These crimes became a vivid stain on humanity and such an embarrassment, the murders were to be investigated by Texas Rangers and a very young F. B. I.
This instant epic earned an R rating and runs almost 3 1/2 hours long. The diversified cast also includes: Jesse Plemons, John Lithgow, Pat Healy, Barry Corbin, Jillian Dion, Sturgill Simpson, Yancey Red Corn, Jack White and Pete Yorn.
Terrifier 2 (2022)
Slasher flick on steroids. Not for the queezy!
No delicate way to put this; a slasher flick with deep cuts and numerous. If you have a weak stomach leave it at the door, before you leave the contents on the floor. Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) is back in town and with a vengeance picking up right where he left off with extreme bad behavior and his addled mind set on fresh meat.
Sienna (Lauren LaVera) and her brother Jonathan (Elliott Fullam) are again consumed with fear of the silent clown on Halloween. Trick or Treating will go on as usual with the teenagers gathering at private parties. But not forgotten, Art the Clown, with his gore-soaked, gut-wringing, fetish laden acts of violence. Murder and torture leave disturbing images requiring barf-bags for some viewers.
Dark Windows (2023)
Dark drama with a lot of tease.
A sober Ali (Grace Binford Sheene) gets into a car with Peter (Rory Alexander), Monica (Annie Hamilton) and sister Tilly (Anna Bullard), who not even close to being sober. There is reckless driving and Ali is killed. Tilly is really bothered, self burdened taking the blame. The surviving trio decide to take a retreat to an old country home owned by a relative of Ali. They need to calm down and try hard to avoid alcohol, have hardily.
Usual interpersonal issues come to the forefront, cell service dies, and a room is discovered that is a well displayed shrine to Ali. Plus strange bumps in the dark begin to happen complete with intelligent voices that sound recorded. Who is responsible for all this? Could it be the tall dark masked stranger, who lurks in the shadowy corners of the house. Why have these three become targets?
Run Rabbit Run (2023)
Life after death? Death imitating life?
Diana Reid directs this Australian flick having genre problems; is this a horror film or dramatic thriller? Sarah (Sarah Snook) is a fertility doctor with her own beliefs about life and death. She currently is occupied with her young daughter Mia's (Lily LaTorre) birthday. Sarah wants her daughter's special day be just that. Strangely a rabbit appears at the front door and Mia wants to keep the animal.
Suddenly Sarah is faced with a challenge; Mia has started acting oddly. Is she in the need of psychological help, for she is behaving like Sarah's dead sister. The movie starts to bog down and the mother/daughter screaming fights get tiresome. Plus flashing scenes of the rabbit are too repetitive. Hard to figure the reason out.
The cinematography is pleasant and a heavy dramatic musical score slows the film down and even makes you think there is something about to happen that you don't want to miss.
#Saraitda (2020)
Too many in a crowd of zombies
A news bulletin announces a rapid spread of a mysterious infection with symptoms of loud screaming and blood dripping from the eyes. Plus, cannibalism.
Joon-wo (Yoo Ah-in) looks from his apartment window and realizes that he is trapped. Zombies chasing citizens and attacking each other. Days pass and the young man has consumed his last bowl of noodles, as he notices a young woman, Kim Yoo-bin (Park Shin-hye), in an apartment across the complex. The neighbor manages to get to Joon-woo's apartment and they combine food and resources including a drone in attempts to escape their apartment complex.
A nifty thriller worth a watch showing that you can find life in a crowd of the undead.
Gojira -1.0 (2023)
Baptized in the power of the atomic bomb.
Director & co-writer Takashi Yamazaki gives us probably the most conventional Godzilla movie ever. The crowd pleasing nuclear lizard turns 70 being born in 1954. This film is set in 1946, as the Japanese people are down trodden trying to emerge and progress in a post-war world. Surviving citizens and soldiers alike try to regain confidence. Then the major event of Godilla rising and roaring with his fire filled breath. A seamless string section provides mood-setting background between strategic placed silence.. This movie is well punctuated, rousing and nerve grabbing as a misunderstood monster crushes buildings and swallows soldiers while he slides and stomps all over Tokyo.
Sous la Seine (2024)
The Seine may not be the same
Starts mediocre before dragging...than a riotous finale. Xavier Gens directs this shark movie that will get you jumping. Sophia (Berenice Bejo) has been studying a shark mutation nicknamed Lilith. After the dangerous shark killed all of her colleagues, she all but gave up her project. Then almost five years later, a young environmental activist name Mika (Lea Leviant) , in Paris is very adamant about discovering a huge shark lurking in the Seine River.
Upon suspicion this is Lilith, Sophia jumps back into her work tracking the shark. Days before the planned World Triathlon Championships being hosted in Paris, the shark mutation must be stopped before making mincemeat out of talented swimmers.
Alienated (2021)
Where do you come from
Darryl Anka directs and co-writes this film with a somewhat misleading title, Alienated. There is a sci-fi touch, but nothing to stand in a long line for. Pretty slow, but interesting in a laid-back manner.
David Bennett (Michael Aaron Carico), is a scientist struggling with OCD and male/father recognition issues depressed and irritated about not solving or finishing his current project. His mundane life will turn around when taking photos in the woods and believes he has encountered a UFO. Upon returning to the scene later, he comes in contact with a quirky female artist, Jordan Waters (Gracie Lacey).
After quickly falling in love; to be pondered: who really are you and where do you come from? Not to be taken seriously, but alright. The main reason I chose to watch this, is for the actress who plays Veronica Bennett (Rachel Strutt). My attraction comes from her TV commercial for Jardiance.
Insidious: The Red Door (2023)
Can a house outlast its demons?
Actor Patrick Wilson makes his directorial debut in this installment of the Insidious franchise. Is a decade long enough for demons to rest? Josh Lambert (Wilson) and his now college-age son Dalton (Ty Simpkins) try to repair their relationship as they try making amends to the homestead. The father and son have had their own traumatic memories suppressed in hope of their own safety. John has be assaulted and Dalton leaves for college, where an art class seems to awaken something in the back of his mind. Maybe the real star of the film is an object; the "Red Door" that has stayed locked for maybe ten years. When the stubborn door finally opens up more than refurbished memories crawl out.
Those faithful to the franchise may be expecting terror, frightening images and strong violence, but may have to be happy with plenty of demons hiding in the shadows. This house does not know the word respect.
S.W.A.T.: Under Siege (2017)
Catching a scorpion can be trouble
A top notch S. W. A. T. team joins up with the D. E. A. To takedown a drug cartel in Seattle that ends in a shootout. S. W. A. T. Agent Travis Hill (Sam Jaeger) grabs a prisoner to take back to lockup. It doesn't take long for the S. W. A. T. compound to come under siege being swarmed by groups of assault teams. They are demanding the prisoner known as "The Scorpion" (Micheal Jai White) , who has a scorpion tattooed on his back. The prisoner is discovered to be a black ops specialist that has the lowdown on both U. S. intel agencies and world wide criminals. Just how hard is it to keep the important prisoner safe as well as his secrets?
Rounding out the cast: Olivia Cheng, Scott Ateah and Adrianne Palicki.
Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022)
Why can't we all get along?
Dutch director Halina Reijin had all intentions of getting away from the over used stabbings and loose heads rolling around. This slasher flick does have a share of laughs mixed with its gore and disturbing behavior.
The setup here has a group of friends trying to impress each other in a remote old house. A menacing storm is added for atmosphere. Not exactly surprising. This sloppy whodunnit can become familiar, but at the same time given the chance can hold your attention and even supply some jump scares. Not a waste of your time.
The so-so cast features Amandia Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Conner O'Malley, Rachel Sennott and an obnoxious Pete Davidson, who I was hoping to see drop dead immediately.
Bad Candy (2020)
Trick or treat...You're dead
Just like a box of chocolates, you just don't know what filling you'll get. This is a little horror anthology not unlike a mixed bag of good and bad stories. Feel free to chuckle, enjoy or just ask...what.
Two radio shock jocks, Chilly Billy (Corey Taylor) and partner Paul (Zach Galligan), spend Halloween telling local myths and horrid urban legends from the town of New Salem. Tales of an overly Halloween-obsessed girl with a magic notebook, flying demons, ghost hunters, a mortuary worker dressed in a nurse's uniform, soul sucking killer clowns and very unstable army veterans suffering PTSD.
These are stand alone tales, that are loud, clumsy, chaotic; but not scary and sure not funny. Rounding out the cast: Derek Russo, Brittney Rae, Dallas T. Taylor and Kenneth Trujillo.
