Waiting for Guffman is a gem of a comedy that shouldn't be missed. Utilizing the comic talents of Christopher Guest, Eugene Levy, Fred Willard and Catherine O'Hara to name just a few, the film perfectly satirizes small-town "talent" and is also just plain hilarious. Shot in mockumentary style, and with similar sense of humor, this film will appeal to fans of Guest's other comic masterpiece, This is Spinal Tap. Both are highly recommended.
Big Bully is a film filled with laughter and tears. It's the story of a man who loses his family and finds himself in the process. It's about choices, how the small decisions we make can affect us for the rest of our lives. Not for fans of Stephen King.
Teen Wolf is an eloquent allegory on the human condition, specifically in the 1980's. Michael J. Fox plays Scott Howard, a restless teen in a small town, desperate to achieve the status of above-average. What he doesn't know is his deep, dark family secret, his lupine roots; in short, he is a werewolf. (The wolf being an obvious, but brilliant metaphor for either male-pattern baldness, schizophrenia, or pointy-teeth disease.) Rather than let his differences distance him from his peers, Howard uses them to gain acceptance, playing basketball, acting in the school play, and fetching slippers for his best friend Styles (who may have been played by Brian Dennehy, but I'm not sure.) As the film draws to a dramatic climax, Howard is forced to choose between his id (the wolf persona), his ego (his human self) or his super-ego (Michael J, Fox the actor). The surprise ending is a surprise and should prove surprising.
