Over the past decade, filmmakers like Daisy Jacobs, Nina Gantz, and Paloma Baeza have all taken home the award. Hoping to follow in their footsteps in 2025 is recent graduate José Prats, whose film Adiós is a contender this year and stood out to us as one of the highlights of the Nfts’ 2024 graduate showcase. The grounded story of a father struggling to accept his adult son’s decision to move abroad, told through tactile stop motion, Adiós obviously carries personal significance for Prats, a Spanish director who came to the UK to study. In our conversation, he shares the inspiration behind his short, his shift from 2D animation to...

As SAG-AFTRA nears its June 30 bargaining deadline amid the Writers Guild of America strike, the Canadian film and TV industry is closely watching for ripple effects of Hollywood’s production shutdown north of the border. Film studios across the country remain dark or filled with homegrown shoots and anxious local talent and crews, dependent on big-budget U.S. film and TV series for work, question when they’ll get back on set.
Montreal-based screenwriter Christine Rodriguez of Productions La Tigresse, who is continuing to work on her upcoming film projects outside of WGA restrictions, said she’s closely watching labor negotiations in Los Angeles. “What the WGA is doing is extremely important. What they do will have an impact for us in Canada. There needs to be a readjustment with the streamers and remuneration for writers where they’re fairly compensated,” Rodriguez tells The Hollywood Reporter as she develops a...

Molly Gordon and Ben Platt in ‘Theater Camp’ (Photo Courtesy of Sundance)
Theater Camp comes with the audience advisory that it contains strobe effects and may potentially trigger seizures. And in a unique twist, this humorous mockumentary from first-time feature film directors Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman incorporates that warning into the plot.
AdirondACTS theater camp founder Joan (Amy Sedaris) suffers a seizure from the strobe light in the camp’s production of Bye Bye Birdie. Joan lapses into a coma at the worst possible time for the struggling upstate New York theater camp. It’s also horrible timing for the documentary crew since Joan was supposed to be the focus of the film and her coma occurs on the first day of shooting.
Money is a major issue and after Joan is forced to make an unexpected exit from camp, her son, Troy (Jimmy Tatro), is put in charge.

One of the most delightfully villainous characters on TV right now also had one of the most delightfully musical numbers in a recent season finale — on Evil! The Paramount+ thriller capped off its third season with an episode that included a baby reveal (Michael Emerson’s Leland used the egg Katja Herbers’ Kristen was missing), a homecoming (Kristen’s husband Andy returned home but something’s off with him), and a whole lot of demons. Plus, to make it even better, Leland and Edward (Tim Matheson) took a page out of Bye Bye Birdie after getting thwarted by Kristen’s daughters. Here, Emerson discusses Leland’s recent actions and what he’d like to see in Season 4. The Kings said the scene with Leland and the monsignor’s blood is part of showing the evil side of Leland again. With that and what he did with Kristen’s egg, does...

If you were worried that Netflix’s live-action Cowboy Bebop wouldn’t be as cool or as stylish as the original… stop worrying.
The streamer has offered us our first look at the reboot — premiering Friday, Nov. 19 — in the form of a new promo dubbed “The Lost Session,” which consists of specially created footage that won’t be seen in the series. Still, it’s a chance to see intergalactic bounty hunters/”cowboys” Spike Spiegel (John Cho), Jet Black (Mustafa Shakir) and Faye Valentine (Daniella Pineda) in action… and “action” is definitely the right word for it.

Celebrated Andalusian production house La Claqueta, headed by producer Olmo Figueredo, will produce “Bella,” the debut animated feature from Spanish director Manuel H. Martín – with whom the company previously produced the award-winning documentary “30 Years of Darkness” and “El viaje mas largo,” and celebrated VFX supervisor Amparo Martínez Barco.
Martín also co-wrote the screenplay for “Bella,” working with award-winning filmmaker Carmen Jiménez, co-writer of 2019’s Spanish Academy Goya Award-nominated “Adiós,” starring Mario Casas.
“Bella” is inspired by the true story of Seville’s Ana Bella Estévez, an Ashoka España entrepreneur and a survivor of gender violence who founded the Ana Bella Foundation, a global network of more than 30,000 women survivors who work to create social change in 82 countries worldwide. Importantly, the film’s team chose animation as the medium to tell her story so that audiences of all ages can hear the important message Ana has dedicated her life to sharing.

Have you seen The Empty Man? For a while there, Fox was probably hoping you would. Probably when it acquired the rights to the graphic novel from Boom! Studios. Probably when it gambled millions of dollars on David Prior’s big-screen horror debut. Probably before it knew that The Empty Man would be the last film to accidentally feature the original 20th Century Fox logo. Probably way before some very particular world events affected the global theatrical release schedule as we knew it.
Probably before all of that.
Have you seen The Empty Man? Prior and the former executive vice president of production at Fox, Mark Roybal, really wanted you to. The pair knew they were embarking on delivering a unique and ambitious horror movie, and Roybal was its studio champion – instrumental to getting that important initial greenlight. The Original Django (1966) will be available on 4K Ultra HD with Texas Adios included on Blu-ray May 25th From Arrow Video
In this definitive spaghetti western, Franco Nero gives a career-defining performance as Django, a mysterious loner who arrives at a mud-drenched ghost town on the Mexico-us border, ominously dragging a coffin behind him. After saving imperilled prostitute Maria (Loredana Nusciak), Django becomes embroiled in a brutal feud between a racist gang and a band of Mexican revolutionaries
With Django, director Sergio Corbucci (The Great Silence) upped the ante for sadism and sensationalism in westerns, depicting machine-gun massacres, mud-fighting prostitutes and savage mutilations. A huge hit with international audiences, Django s brand of bleak nihilism would be repeatedly emulated in a raft of unofficial sequels.
The film is presented here in its 4K Uhd Blu-ray debut, with a wealth of extras. Also included is the bonus feature Texas, Adios on Blu-ray,...

Leading Spanish sales company Latido Films has snapped up international sales rights to Violeta Salama’s directorial debut, “Alegria.” Argentina’s Leonardo Sbaraglia joins a stellar European-Latino cast that includes Mexico’s Cecilia Suárez (“La Casa de las Flores”), Spanish actresses Laia Manzanares (“Merlí”) and Mara Guill (“Caronte”) as well as French-born Sarah Perles.
“’Alegria’ is one of the opportunities a sales agency just cannot let pass,” Latido’s Antonio Saura declared. “It’s a funny, sad, charming and totally enjoyable story that dwells on the personal past of the film director, which is told with the ingenuity and charm of someone that cherishes memories and has accepted the multicultural richness of the little-known Spanish city of Melilla, where the story unfolds,” he added.
Seville-based La Claqueta, producer of Spain’s submission to the International Oscars race, “The Endless Trench,” co-produces the comedy with Clara Nieto’s newly-founded Powehi Films.

“While gratified by the speed with which Nielsen reversed their postponement plan, it was crystal clear that a quick reversal was Nielsen’s only viable option,” Vab President & CEO Sean Cunningham said in a statement. “Marketers are deep into planning and activation discussions with their multiscreen TV ad sales partners, the last thing advertisers need in 2020 is an unnecessary step backwards from a currency provider. The TV industry’s solidarity in always pushing for innovation made sure that potential delay was eliminated quickly.”

In an explosive forty-minute video -- marking her return to YouTube after a two-month absence -- beauty vlogger Tati Westbrook is shedding new light on her now-infamous feud with James Charles, which ignited the beauty community last year, and saw Charles lose millions of subscribers while dealing a substantial blow to his reputation.
Last May, in a video titled Bye Sister, Westbrook accused Charles of being a disloyal friend with an outsized ego, and for attempting to use his fame to seduce straight men.. Today, however, Westbrook alleges that Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star “used, coerced, and manipulated” her into making the Bye Sister video because they wanted to destroy Charles’ career.
Dawson, for his part, denied allegations that he orchestrated the Bye Sister video in a since-deleted memo posted to Twitter last week, where he announced his departure from YouTube's beauty community, explaining that the drama had become too much to bear.

There’s never been a more opportune time for Latinx artists to impact contemporary R&b than right now. Not that Latinos in R&b are an entirely new phenomenon — as evidenced by old school Chicano Soul artists like the Royal Jesters, or proto-rockeros Cannibal and the Headhunters, who once toured with the Beatles. Yet in recent years, a growing number of new voices have supplemented the genre with touches of Latinidad: including Chicano Batman, Kali Uchis, and Omar Apollo. Nevertheless, when you think of R&b hotbeds, Mexico isn...

Spain’s big shoot business is rocking, galvanized by more regional options and incentives that are highly competitive — at least in rates.
With a long tradition of hosting international productions, Spain earned larger global visibility after “Game of Thrones” filmed there from 2014 to 2018.
Production services has become one of the healthiest audiovisual sectors in Spain, driven by a golden age of local and international TV drama, as well as greater legal stability of its incentives. Spain’s mainland offers 20% tax rebates for international productions, capped at €3 million ($3.4 million); in the Canary Islands, the rate is 40%, with a €5.4 million ($6.1 million) ceiling.
“Tax advantages are attracting all kind of international productions,” says Nostromo’s Adrián Guerra, president of producers’ association Profilm.
“There are so many productions going on all over Spain that it’s becoming difficult to crew up on new productions,” he adds.
Challenges remain. The tax system is predominantly luring low-to-mid-range foreign projects.
