We’ve seen this smile before … sort of.
While on the red carpet for the forthcoming Smile 2, the follow-up to the Sosie Bacon-led horror film about a grinning harbinger of death, star Ray Nicholson was asked about his approach to the genre and how fans have likened the smile on his character’s poster to that of his father Jack Nicholson’s deranged smirk for the seminal Stanley Kubrick film The Shining.
“We’re very different people,” the actor told Deadline at the premiere. “I was born in 1992, he was born in 1937. The things that affect me don’t necessarily affect him. Obviously, I love him. He’s my inspiration. I ate dinner with him every night. I studied it, that’s how I learned to be a human being. So, of course we’re gonna be kind of similar.”

It was Martin Scorsese’s iconic The Wolf of Wall Street that gave Margot Robbie the recognition she deserved, and since then, the Australian actress has only been attracting major roles. Little did she know that starting a life in Hollywood would lead her to settle down and start a family as well.
In 2013, while the Birds of Prey actress basked in success following her big break, it was also the same year she met her eventual husband, Tom Ackerley, on the set of Suite Française, a World War II drama. Their lives would change forever a year later.

Since the academy expanded the Best Picture category at the Oscars in 2010, Best Original Screenplay has gone to writers of a wide-range of genres: dramas; comedies (“Midnight in Paris”); biopics; true-life stories (“Spotlight”); memoirs (“Belfast”); period pictures (“Django Unchained”); war movies (“The Hurt Locker”); sci-fi (“Her”), thrillers horror (“Get Out”) and fantasies (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”) . (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Screenplay.)
Of this year’s top 10 contenders for Best Original Screenplay, nine were written, at least in part, by the directors. The exception is “Challengers,” which Justin Kuritzkes wrote for director Luca Guadagnino. He also adapted the William S. Burroughs novel “Queer” for this busy helmer and he could well contend over in Best Adapted Screenplay for that.
“Challengers” is, at its heart, a romance. Love, albeit short-lived, is also the subject of the frontrunner in this race, Sean Baker‘s “Anora.

Back in 2018, while presenting Best Director alongside Ron Howard at the Golden Globe Awards, Natalie Portman created a meme: “And here are the all-male nominees,” Portman said, pointedly underlining the omission of presumed contenders like Greta Gerwig for “Lady Bird” and Patty Jenkins for “Wonder Woman.”
Speaking a month after the ceremony, Portman said she wanted to bring attention to the disparity in the directors’ field without throwing the male nominees under the bus. “It’s not their fault, and they all made great work. You don’t want to not recognize them,” she said to BuzzFeed. “It’s just, why aren’t we recognizing the people who aren’t part of this exclusive club?”
But, Portman added, her goal was to make clear the obvious. “We have to make it weird for people to walk in a room where everyone’s not in the room,” she said. “If you...

Emerald Fennell has cast her first film since Saltburn, as she takes on adaptation of Wuthering Heights. More here.
Despite being one of the greatest novels written in the English language (apart from The Da Vinci Code), it’s probably fair to say that we’ve never had a definitive screen version of Wuthering Heights. Sure, you might well have a favourite Heathcliff, whether that’s Timothy Dalton, Tom Hardy or otherwise, but given just how iconic the novel is, we’ve yet to see a version that fully does it justice.
Enter Emerald Fennell then. The director behind Promising Young Woman and Saltburn is tackling Emily Brontë’s seminal gothic romance, or as the immortal British sitcom, Peep Show once called it, ‘not a love story but a clucking cluck story’.
Or words similar to that effect, anyway.

Renowned filmmaker Emerald Fennell will direct a new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s famous 1847 novel “Wuthering Heights.” Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi are set to star as Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff, the passionate yet destructive lovers at the center of the Gothic romance. Production is scheduled for 2025 in the United Kingdom.
Fennell revealed the project last July on social media and secured Robbie and Elordi for the lead roles. Robbie previously worked with Fennell on the hit films “Promising Young Woman” and “Saltburn,” earning her an Oscar for the former. Zoë Kravitz’s directorial debut joins a microgenre of films, from Promising Young Woman to Don’t Worry Darling, that try – and mostly fail – to capture a difficult moment
This article contains spoilers
Blink Twice, Zoë Kravitz’s buzzy directorial debut, opens with lush, confident seduction. The starry-eyed Frida (Naomi Ackie), a cash-strapped cater-waiter who yearningly scrolls Instagram in her dingy bathroom, catches the eye of handsome tech entrepreneur Slater King at a ritzy gala; he summarily whisks her and her down-with-it best friend Jess (Alia Shawkat) to his private tropical island along with a private jet’s worth of hangers-on. The ostensible goal of the trip is to party – drink all day, lounge by the pool, soak up the sun, suck the marrow out of life. You cannot trust a billionaire, but why not enjoy the spoils?
Kravitz, who co-wrote the film with Et Feigenbaum, similarly relishes in the sensory...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Kate Winslet Brings the Heat to a Wild, Well-Dressed Revenge Dramedy
To paraphrase Moira Rose, “If you love female rage as much as I do, you’ll thrill to Kate Winslet in the underseen Australian movie ‘The Dressmaker.‘”
“The Dressmaker” exists in an odd lull in Winslet’s career. Post-Oscar win for “The Reader,” she appeared in a slew of Ok period films and the “Divergent” series — which meant no one was really looking for the next great Winslet performance. Too bad, because one of her best is at...

There are deafening echoes of Get Out, Don’t Worry Darling and The Menu in this propulsive yet ultimately unwieldy attempt to use Epstein’s island as genre inspiration
For her directorial debut, Blink Twice, actor and reluctantly labelled nepo baby Zoë Kravitz has arrived at the table with a plate that’s stacked precariously high. It’s a tart, topical thriller sat in a Venn diagram between the many recent “eat the rich” satires (a subgenre that’s taken us from the heady highs of Triangle of Sadness to the limp lows of Saltburn) and the post-Get Out #MeToo-inflected social thrillers (from the overrated Promising Young Woman to the underrated Fresh). Margaret Qualley is still keeping it weird: While she appeared in “Poor Things” as a science experiment gone wrong, Qualley is now literally shedding her skin for the co-lead role in the body horror film “The Substance.” It’s already the most talked about thriller of the year.
Qualley stars as the younger version of Demi Moore’s aging actress in the buzzy feature from writer/director Coralie Fargeat. “The Substance” debuted at Cannes 2024, where IndieWire’s David Ehrlich deemed it an “instant classic” and first reactions applauded its feminist message. The film, which won Best Screenplay at Cannes, will have its North American premiere at TIFF 2024, opening the Midnight Madness section.
The official synopsis for “The Substance” reads: “Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). She...

Sales company Cercamon has given Variety exclusive access to a clip of its upcoming revenge tale “Crickets, It’s Your Turn” ahead of the film’s Locarno premiere.
Written and directed by Olga Korotko – also behind “Bad Bad Winter” – it focuses on Merey (Inzhu Abeu), who lives in Kazakhstan’s Almaty. Then, a girl meets a boy: Nurlan (Ayan Batyrbek), who immediately introduces her to his friends. It doesn’t go well, but Merey still agrees to go to his birthday party in the mountains. After all, what could go wrong?
“In the film, I am not solely addressing patriarchy. I see patriarchy as a symptom: a consequence of a broader worldview rooted in social Darwinism that perceives the world as a place where the only way to succeed is through strength, domination and toxic competition,” Korotko told Variety.

Last year, there was a massive uproar when “Barbie” filmmaker Greta Gerwig was left off of the Best Director lineup at the Oscars, despite the blockbuster movie reaping eight total nominations including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay (for Gerwig and Noah Baumbach). “Anatomy of a Fall” helmer Justine Triet, who won the prize for Best Original Screenplay, did wind up earning a directing bid, and it was only the ninth such time in Academy Awards history for a woman. So will the upcoming 2025 Oscars include any female Best Director nominees? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s Oscar Experts.

Exciting news for literature and movie fans – acclaimed director Emerald Fennell just announced her next project and it sounds awesome. The Oscar winner, known for provocative films like “Promising Young Woman,” revealed on social media that she’ll be putting her spin on Emily Brontë’s classic “Wuthering Heights.”
Fennell is riding high off her recent success with “Saltburn,” a critically praised movie that also blew up on TikTok. Taking on a literary legend like “Wuthering Heights” shows she’s not afraid of a challenge. Published way back in 1847, it’s considered one of the greatest novels ever.
The story follows two families, the Earnshaws and the Lintons, and the intense love between Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. It deals with big themes like class, obsession, and even the supernatural. All that drama and emotion is right up Fennell’s alley based on her past works.

The Emily Brontë book follows Heathcliff, an orphan-turned-foster-son who falls in love with the daughter of the family who owns the estate on which he now lives, Wuthering Heights. After running away, Heathcliff rises up through the ranks of the gentry and exacts revenge on the families — the Earnshaws and the Lintons — who kept him from his true love.
The Brontë novel was previously adapted for the screen in 1939 by William Wyler with Laurence Olivier starring as Heathcliff, again in 1992 by director Peter Kosminsky starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche, and in 2011 by Andrea Arnold.

Margot Robbie has conquered the film industry, and now she has her eyes set on the lucrative gin market, with the launch of her own tipple.
Along with her husband and business partner Tom Ackerley, as well as three other friends, Robbie has launched Papa Salt, and she says selling gin is easier than selling a movie.
The star and producer of Barbie, which brought in $1.4billion told The Times of London she found the process of creating and marketing her gin “refreshing,” explaining:
“Movies are a crazy business where you are selling something that isn’t tangible, it’s an idea. You have no idea how much it’s going to make, who’s going to see it, if they’ll see it or how it will be received.
“This feels a lot more straightforward, it’s easier to predict things. You can lay this out on a spreadsheet...

Do Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan have beef with one another? No, not exactly. According to Deadline, the duo is negotiating to star in Beef Season 2. While Netflix refused to comment about its status with the Emmy darling, it’s an excellent time to remind everyone that Netflix has not officially announced Beef Season 2. Deadline says the roles that Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan would play for Beef Season 2 were originally for Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway, but momentum on them joining the series stalled. Meanwhile, the move to add Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny to the series remains a mystery.
Lee Sung Jin created Beef, which Ali Wong and Steven Yeun led. The show revolves around two people (Wong and Yeun) who let a road rage incident burrow into their minds and slowly consume their thoughts and actions. Their toxic relationship evolves into an all-out war with disastrous consequences.

Even though we’re only in 2024, the decade of the 20s has already brought us a great number of cinema masterpieces, including inventive thrillers. If you like to get your nerves tickled with some mystery stories, we have a perfect list for you.
Here are 6 thriller gems of the past 4 years you need to discover, according to Reddit.
Society of the Snow (2023)
Based on the true story of the Uruguayan rugby team whose plane crashed right in the Andes back in 1972, this must-see film is so convincing that it feels like a documentary, yet unnerving enough to get you fully immersed in this survival tale.
Fresh (2022)
Next is an emotional roller coaster of a thriller that centers on a woman who goes on a romantic weekend getaway with a mysterious man, only to realize he has darker motifs behind it. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Sebastian Stan’s performances are top-notch here.
