In the modern age of social media saturation and online narcissism, Marcus Dunstan’s 2024 slasher-comedy #Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead feels eerily timely. The film tracks a group of college friends—many aspiring social media influencers—as they find themselves targeted by a mysterious killer during a weekend getaway.
Directed by Dunstan from a script co-written with Josh Sims and Jessica Sarah Flaum, #Amfad puts a millennial twist on the classic slasher formula. A car breakdown leaves the friends stranded at an isolated Airbnb just as a masked assailant begins offing them in brutal yet inventive killings. Each death connects to one of the seven deadly sins, echoing the premise of cult classics like Se7en.
Led by final girl Sarah, played engagingly by Jade Pettyjohn, the friends must uncover the killer’s identity before they all meet a grisly fate. Unfortunately, their fixation on curating the perfect online image...

#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead, directed by Marcus Dunstan, is a new teenage comedy horror film that plays at being a slasher but leans more towards humor than horror. The scares are light, and the intensity you’d expect from a slasher isn’t quite there. Right from the start, it’s pretty obvious who the main culprit is, so there’s little surprise or suspense. It follows a group of seven friends who are going to attend Karmapalooza music festival. After their car tire got punctured, they have no choice but to spend the night at a nearby hotel. A police officer they met on the road helped them to get there. But once they arrive, the friends start getting killed one by one by an unknown masked figure. This killer seems to be punishing the group for their seven deadly sins. Interestingly, the same thing happened 20 years ago,...

Karma’s a bitch… and she loves a genre flick.
M. Night Shyamalan just put the spotlight back on viral terror with “Trap,” an escape room horror about a killer attempting to outmaneuver the cops at a concert packed with iPhones. In fewer theaters this weekend (but streaming too!) is director Marcus Dunstan’s “#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead.” That’s another internet horror movie featuring a major pop music event — only here the murderer and their victims never make it inside the venue.
Starring ex-Nickelodeon favorite Jade Pettyjohn and none other than JoJo Siwa herself, “#Amfad” sees its masked villain ensnare a van full of wannabe internet celebs in a “Seven”-esque killing spree at a remote Airbnb. Both former kid-stars-turned-social-media-heavyweights, Pettyjohn and Siwa worked together years ago when the “Dance Moms” legend guest-starred with series regular Pettyjohn on “School of Rock.”

Here’s a round-up of brief thoughts and capsule reviews of Tribeca’s narrative features that either toe-dip or crash into horror in surprising ways.

At one point, Saw VI director Kevin Greutert was on board to direct a slasher movie called All My Friends Are Dead… but then Greutert got busy working on Saw X and ended up handing the helm over to Marcus Dunstan – the director of The Collector and co-writer of Saw VI. All My Friends Are Dead went into production a year ago with Dunstan at the helm, and now it’s aiming for an August 2nd theatrical, digital, and VOD release.
