Exclusive: After supplying the 2023 fall box office with $261M with his Taylor Swift: Eras Tour concert film, Sam Wrench is directing a redo of the 1980 United Artists feature film, The Idolmaker for Amazon MGM Studios. The movie will rep Grammy nominated and Emmy winning music documentary and live event filmmaker Wrench’s narrative directing debut.
Friday Night Lights Emmy winner Jason Katims is writing the script.
Released in 1980, The Idolmaker was Academy Award nominee Taylor Hackford’s first film and earned Ray Sharkey a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. The movie was based on the life of rock promoter/producer Bob Marcucci, who discovered, among others, Frankie Avalon and Fabian. It was written by Edward Di Lorenzo and produced by Hawk Koch and Gene Kirkwood, the film counts a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer and also starred Tovah Feldshuh, Peter Gallagher, and Paul Land. Kirkwood and Hawk Koch will return to produce the film, with Bill Gerber (A Star is Born) also producing.
In Katims’ modern-day reimagining, a singularly talented musician and equally gifted “idolmaker” navigate the complications of the music industry and the real world.
Wrench received a 2023 Grammy nom for Billie Eilish Live at O2 in the Best Music Film slot. He’s also directed episodes of American Idol and Rhythm + Flow. He is represented by CAA and Yorn Levine.
Katims also created NBC’s Parenthood which pumped out 103 episodes. He also wrote the near $200M global grossing Channing Tatum-Rachel McAdams movie The Vow. He is represented by CAA and Schreck Rose Dapello Adams Berlin & Dunham.

“Hollywood Squares” is back for a new generation. The gameshow, which originally aired in 1966 and has seen several reboots since is back with a new center square: Drew Barrymore.
Executive producer Jesse Collins told TheWrap he wanted to bring back the game show for years, but it wasn’t until longtime fan of the show Barrymore signed on that the project really took off.
“Drew’s Rolodex is insane. Having her in that center square for all 20 episodes just made everybody feel like this is definitely a safe place for me to come and and show my knowledge or lack thereof, and just generally, have fun,” the “Rhythm + Flow” producer told TheWrap.
Collins also joked the show has probably never seen a center square sit in other people’s seats as much as the “50 First Dates” actress. “It’s that need to hug,” he said. Host Nate Burleson...

Controversy and defamatory accusations appeared online over the winner of Netflix's Rhythm + Flow Season 2.
Rhythm + Flow marks Netflix's first musical competition series. It follows a group of rap artists who compete in a series of challenges for a $250,000 grand prize. Akin to other competition series like So You Think You Can Dance, the series is known for bringing plenty of drama along with its dance antics.
The series premiered on Netflix in 2019 behind a judging panel featuring Cardi B, Chance the Rapper, and T.I. and returned in 2024 after various production delays. Season 2 began on November 20 with a new trio of judges: DJ Khaled, Ludacris, and Latto.

At its heart, hip-hop is about the craft. Anyone can grab a mic, diss an opponent, freestyle a rhyme. But if there’s one thing made abundantly clear in Rhythm + Flow, it’s that making a hit takes talent, and above all — hard work.
After a handful of challenges in the hip-hop/rap competition that tested the contestants against each other, the seven Rhythm + Flow Season 2 semifinalists finally got to show their work, shining on their own for the first time in their true introductions to the judges — and the world.
Then, whittled down to the last round of competitors, the final four worked with awardproducers and hitmakers to bring their visions to life — incorporating visuals and staging with their music. The result is a mosaic of styles, beats, and themes, collectively representing a diverse group of talented artists fighting to impact the world with their voices...

For DreTL, his defining moment on Rhythm + Flow Season 2 wasn’t the one you’d expect — not the big one, when it was announced in front of a live audience that he’d won the hip-hop competition show and the whopping $250,000 cash prize. No, it was well before that. Not on stage, but rather in the basement of a church in Michigan. And while there was also an audience, to DreTL, there was only one other person in the room: his favorite rapper, Eminem.
“Once I was able to perform in front of him, I felt like I was going to win, because nothing was tougher than that,” DreTL tells Tudum. Under Detroit’s historic Saint Andrews Hall where Eminem first honed his skills, the Rhythm + Flow contestants were challenged to go head-to-head in a cypher battle. “The finale wasn’t as hard because of what it meant to me.

Netflix is building out its “Building the Band” cast. After announcing the competition series about “making the next great music group sight unseen” back in May, the streamer revealed its all-star lineup Friday, consisting of judges Kelly Rowland, Liam Payne and Nicole Scherzinger alongside host Aj McLean.
That’s right — those iconic singers from Destiny’s Child, One Direction, the Pussycat Dolls and the Backstreet Boys will be lending their expertise to help shape the next generation. Rowland, Scherzinger and Payne also bring experience from British reality series “The X Factor” to share — Rowland and Scherzinger as judges, Payne as a contestant — in addition to their other reality TV show appearances.
According to Netflix, the competing uniquely talented singers will form bands based on “compatibility, connection and, most importantly, merit,” as opposed to “looks, choreography and style.” Additional guest judges will be revealed at a later date.

Jesse Collins Entertainment is back for an Emmys encore. ABC and the Television Academy are set to announce that the production company has been tapped to serve as producers of this year’s 76th edition of the Primetime Emmy awards.
This past January, Jesse Collins Entertainment pulled off something rare: In a world where awards shows rarely get rave reviews, the company earned high marks for producing the 75th Emmys (which had been delayed due to the Hollywood strikes). Now, just a few months later, they’re ready for more.
“Jesse Collins Entertainment delivered a fresh, innovative and unforgettable celebration of Emmy’s 75th anniversary, and we are happy to be working with them again this year,” said Television Academy chair Cris Abrego. “We look forward to another extraordinary evening celebrating the rich and diverse television landscape, and honoring the remarkable people and programs shaping our industry.”

Exclusive: “This is purely strategic,” exclaims Why Not Me? host and La La Land executive producer Mike Jackson of having John Legend as the first guest on his new podcast series. “There’s a method to the madness.”
The strategy being that having a mega-star like Legend in the hot seat is a great way to launch a podcast series – even more so when said Egot winner is your Get Lifted Film Co business partner and a producer on said podcast.
Another part of that strategy is that Legend has a pretty good origin story to tell Jackson on the June 18-debuting series dedicated to such origin and road-to-success tales. With a lineup that also includes Gabrielle Union, ESPN kingpin Stephen A. Smith, Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr., WNBA legend Candice Parker, Jurnee Smollett and Shameless star Shanola Hampton, Why Not Me? with Mike Jackson launches Tuesday on Spotify,...

Netflix made some noise in the unscripted world when it hired Jeff Gaspin, the former NBCUniversal chief, as its new defacto reality boss earlier this year.
The hire ostensibly signaled that the streamer wanted to step up its unscripted efforts and take on the broadcast networks when it comes to buying big entertainment formats.
During his time as NBC’s head of alternative entertainment, he developed series including The Apprentice, The Biggest Loser and Deal or No Deal and after his promotion, his last act as Chairman of NBC Universal Television was buying The Voice, which other than The Masked Singer, was arguably the last major entertainment format to breakthrough on the broadcast nets.
Netflix is now doubling down on efforts to find its version of The Voice.
“The difference from the past is we want to focus on bigger formats, more of what you would call broadcast-style shows versus the cable style shows.

The second season finale of music series Rhythm + Flow could be live as part of Netflix’s new push into live programming.
The second season of the competition series, which is expected to air later this year, comes four years after the first and will feature new judges DJ Khaled, Ludacris and Latto with Eminem as a special guest.
Brandon Riegg, VP of Nonfiction Series, Netflix, said that it is considering its options when it comes to a live finale.
“Rhythm + Flow season two, down the road, I can see the finale perhaps being live or maybe we’ll try it in other ways. But I’m excited about it. I think live drives a lot of conversation,” he said.

Exclusive: Jenn Levy, who has overseen series including Queer Eye and Is It Cake? at Netflix, is leaving the streamer.
Deadline understands that Levy, who is VP Nonfiction, is leaving at the end of this week.
She has been with the company since 2017, having joined as Director of Unscripted Originals from NBCUniversal’s Bravo, where she had spent nine years. She was the company’s unscripted chief Brandon Riegg’s first hire after he joined the company at the end of 2016.
The move is somewhat of a surprise given the success of Netflix’s recent reality pipeline.
Queer Eye is heading in to its eighth season; Love Is Blind — arguably Netflix’s biggest unscripted hit — is back in February with Season 6; and the company behind that series, Kinetic Content, also is behind The Ultimatum, which has aired two seasons and has a spinoff. Also, Selling Sunset is filming its eighth season and has spawned spinoffs,...

Although the song begins with a cocky hook (“I look sexy when I’m walking through this bitch/I look sexy when I’m moving through your city”), D Smoke goes on to recount moments of struggle and doubt. “Glide” builds into a monument to strength, most titanic when he embodies his mother’s encouragement: “You should know...

This year’s American Music Awards show is looking at some big changes behind the scenes, as ABC and Dick Clark Productions are announcing that Jesse Collins — recently of the Grammys and Oscars — is taking over as showrunner and executive producer, starting with the telecast set for Nov. 21 of this year.
Collins has been on quite the roll recently. In the first half of 2021, he produced the Weeknd’s Super Bowl halftime show, was a co-executive producer of the Grammys, and co-produced the Oscars — as close to a triple crown as you can get in winter and spring TV entertainment events. These followed his production of the 2020 BET Awards, which was regarded by many as the best of the reinvented pandemic-era television awards show broadcasts.
Jesse Collins Entertainment is also being named as a producer of the AMAs, alongside Dick Clark Productions.

An as-yet untitled documentary about Doors frontman Jim Morrison is in production via the independent studio Gunpowder & Sky and the managers of the singer’s estate, they jointly announced Friday, with the promise of bringing “unearthed” personal diaries and home movies to the screen as part of the project.
Joining Gunpowder & Sky as producers on the film are Jeff Jampol, the head of Jampol Artist Management (Jam), which manages Morrison’s estate as well as those of artists from Janis Joplin to Charlie Parker, and Jeff Pollack, of FourScore Entertainment, a producer on films and TV specials including the Frank Sinatra doc “All or Nothing at All,” “Laurel Canyon: A Place in Time” and “Rhythm + Flow.”
“Our job is to guide, protect and connect our clients’ extraordinary legacies to fans both old and new, while always maintaining the highest standards of credibility and authenticity,” Jampol said in a statement.

The series is in development at ABC from Jackson’s G-Unit Film & Television.

Exclusive: Lincoln and Mr. Robot actress Gloria Reuben has boarded both Blumhouse/Weed Road/Universal’s Firestarter and Showtime’s limited series The First Lady about the women at the heart of the White House. I’m told that Reuben has a leading role in Firestarter.
Season one of the Aaron Cooley created, Lionsgate and Showtime produced series focuses on Eleanor Roosevelt (Gillian Anderson), Betty Ford (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Michelle Obama (Viola Davis). Cooley will write several of the episodes and serve as EP.
Reuben will portray Valerie June Jarrett, senior advisor to President Obama. Jarrett was Michelle Obama’s friend and former boss, whom Michelle credits with teaching her about personal growth in the workplace. Oscar winner Cathy Schulman (Crash), Viola Davis, Julius Tennon, Andrew Wang, Susanne Bier, Jeff Gaspin (Rhythm + Flow), and Brad Kaplan (Mr. Church) are also EPs on The First Lady.

(Updated with statement from T.I.’s lawyer) Already facing public allegations from nearly a dozen women of sexually assaulting and drugging them, T.I. is now in the spotlight of the Los Angeles Police Department.
“There is an active investigation into Clifford Harris,” Officer William Cooper of the LAPD told Deadline on Monday, referring to T.I.’s real name. The official statement comes after rumors of a cop shop probe against T.I and his wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris began circulating earlier in the day. The LAPD would not confirm whether Tiny Harris was also being investigated.
The investigation has been underway for the past several weeks, I hear. LAPD detectives met with a Jane Doe last month to discuss claims of a drugging and rape by T.I. and Tiny back in 2005. The detectives have been looking into other claims as well, sources tell Deadline.
