Mel Gibson's new movie, Monster Summer, continues the actor's unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes streak. Directed by David Henrie, known for starring in How I Met Your Mother and Wizards of Waverly Place, his new film follows a group of kids who, when a strange force threatens to ruin their summer fun, join forces with a retired police detective to embark on an adventure to save their island from a monstrous threat. The movie stars Mel Gibson, Mason Thames, Noah Cottrell, Nora Zehetner, Patrick Renna, Lorraine Bracco, and Kevin James.
With the movie now playing in theaters, reviews have been published and its Rotten Tomatoes score has been revealed. Monster Summer sits at 50% on Rotten Tomatoes with 10 reviews from critics, though the score could fluctuate as more are published. Even so, the score continues an unfortunate streak for Mel Gibson, whose movies have been mostly Rotten over the past four years,...

Mel Gibson may just be gleefully screwing with us, but in MovieWeb's interview for his delightful new film Monster Summer, he addressed his recent trip to Malta for location-scouting, which was widely reported to be for his upcoming sequel to The Passion of the Christ. If he is psyching us out, it's a rather detailed and delightful diversion. When asked about his trip to Malta (where he met Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela) and what direction his sequel to the religious drama was taking, Gibson responded by saying:
"Sure, well, there's that, but there's also I'm also working on a TV limited series about the Siege of Malta, which is an incredible story, and there's only one place to film that, I mean, in Malta. Because that's where it happened, at these fortresses where 700 knights defended Malta against an onslaught from the Turkish and Suleiman sent 40,000 men and ships and,...

According to a new article in The Wrap, Walt Disney Imagineering, the engineering team behind the company's theme parks, is currently considering tearing down the Muppet*Vision 3D attraction at Walt Disney World. For those unfamiliar, Muppet*Vision 3D is a theatrical 3D experience that initially debuted at the Disney-mgm Studios (now known as Disney's Hollywood Studios) in Florida. The show falls in line with other "4-d" experiences commonly found at theme parks wherein a 3D short is presented alongside live-action animatronics, smoke effects, bubbles, shaking theater seats, and other in-room "ride" elements. In Muppet*Vision, Kermit the Frog introduces the show, and audiences witness the Muppets gearing up for a big performance. A rogue computer program called Waldo, however, sabotages the night, and wacky destruction ensues. The entire show runs 15 minutes.
Muppet*Vision 3D first opened in May 1991, and was famously the final Muppets-related project worked on by Muppets...

In 2016, Charlie Hunnam starred in the underrated yet critically acclaimed film The Lost City of Z. The film, which is inspired by a true story, will be leaving Netflix this month.

Currently streaming on Netflix, The Lost City of Z's time on the platform is ticking, as it's set to leave on July 15.

Lucy Fry (the Wolf Creek TV series), Madeline Brewer (The Handmaid’s Tale), Sheryl Lee (Twin Peaks), and comedian Matt Rife (Natural Selection) lead the cast of the psychological horror film I Live Here Now, which recently made its way through production with first-time feature director Julie Pacino at the helm. Utopia represents the worldwide rights to the project, and Screen Daily reports that they’ll be launching distribution sales at the European Film Market, which will be held during the 74th Berlin International Film Festival later this month.
I Live Here Now sees Fry taking on the role of a woman who finds herself trapped in a remote hotel where the violent echoes of her past come alive, blurring the lines between her darkest nightmares and the waking world.
In addition to Wolf Creek, Fry’s credits include Vampire Academy, Mr. Church, 11.22.63, The Darkness, Bright, Night Teeth, She’s Missing,...

Actor and filmmaker Mel Gibson is set to return to the director's chair for his next project. Deadline reports that the Apocalypto helmer will direct Flight Risk, a new action movie with Mark Wahlberg attached to play the lead role. It is the first time Gibson has directed a film since 2016's Hacksaw Ridge, which garnered him a nomination for Best Director at the Academy Awards. He previously won the Oscar for helming 1996's Braveheart, and it's also worth noting that his 2004 film The Passion of the Christ was a tremendous hit at theaters and still holds the record as the highest-grossing R-rated movie in the history of the domestic box office.
Flight Risk comes from Lionsgate, the company behind Hacksaw Ridge, and they'll be shopping the project soon at the Cannes market. It will see a reunion of Gibson and Wahlberg, who both starred in last year's Father Stu.

Lionsgate has nabbed global distribution for “Flight Risk,” an action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. This will mark the first film Gibson has directed since his blockbuster ($175 million on a $40 million budget) and Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016. The mini-major will be launching the project, featuring Wahlberg as a pilot transporting a dangerous criminal for trial, at Cannes.
“We love the undeniable electric pairing of Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Joe Drake said. “These world-class talents combining for this dynamic, character-driven film will make ‘Flight Risk’ one of the most suspense-filled, must-see events of the year.”
Wahlberg and Gibson have starred in a few projects together, including “Daddy’s Home 2” and last year’s faith-based “Father Stu.” Considering the number of high-concept or true-story action movies Wahlberg has made with director Peter Berg over the last decade, it is a mild surprise that Gibson will be in charge.

Jessica Burstein, the veteran photographer who helped capture the Law & Order franchise, has died following a battle with lung cancer. She was 76.
She died April 11 at her home in Manhattan, her sister Patricia Burstein told The New York Times.
Born on April 7, 1947, in Mineola, New York, Burstein grew up in nearby Lawrence. After she graduated from NYU in 1968, she worked for commercial photographer Bert Stern for several years. Then, in 1974, she was believed to be the first woman to work as a staff photographer at NBC.
It wasn’t until the early ’90s that Burstein met Dick Wolf, the creator of Law & Order. He ended up hiring her to photograph the weekly crime scenes for the original series and eventually became its photographer from 1994-2010, when the show was canceled. (It was revived in 2022.) She also photographed the spinoffs, including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit until 2007 and...

On the latest “SNL,” the “Weekend Update” segment ended on a goofier and funnier than usual note when Colin Jost said they had run out of material but still had a couple of minutes left to fill.
Instead of Jost and his co-host Michael Che coming up jokes to fill the void, they brought out the show’s resident impressions master James Austin Johnson to fill that time with a series of random impressions.
And, they were pretty funny.
First, Johnson did an impression of Adam Driver as Kylo Ren from “Star Wars” on the show “Girls”
“Anna, do you know how difficult it is to be on the dark side of the force. No you don’t because you are a Child!”
Next, Johnson channeled his inner Batman, as the super hero of Gotham City read “Where is Waldo?”
“Where is he?!?” Austin said while pretending to hold a book.

This post contains spoilers for "Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quatumania."
"Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quatumania" has finally hit theaters, and Phase 5 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has begun. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) has been resting on his laurels after saving the world with the help of a rat and a few other Avengers ... at least according to his daughter Cassie (Kathryn Newton), who wants him to use his powers to help the world. Sure, he's written a book (which you can actually purchase this September), but now all she sees is her dad doing book signings and getting free coffee in exchange for preserving existence.
Cassie hasn't been idle, however. While her dad is relaxing and his partner Hope van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) is using Pym particles to help improve conditions in the world, Cassie has sent a signal down to the Quantum Realm, something she does in front of Scott,...

Gibson plays an alcoholic actor accused of violence against women in a comedy-crime thriller that would have been a lot more fun without him
The seemingly unstoppable rehabilitation of Mel Gibson continues with this Hollywood-set comedy-crime thriller in which Gibson is practically trolling us by playing Alastair Pinch, a close-to-the-bone version of himself a few years back. Pinch is an alcoholic actor accused of violence against women, although in the film his character is arrested for killing his wife, whereas in real life Gibson pleaded no contest to a battery charge. And yet, we’re supposed to think he’s charming and adorable because he can quote chunks of Hamlet and plays sweetly with his kindergarten-aged daughter (Sophie Fatu). At least this semi-satirical fiction, adapted by Howard Michael Gould from his own novel and efficiently directed by Brit Tim Kirkby, recognises that forgiveness is always around the corner for film...

New Release Wall
It’s possible that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment) might have somehow been an even bigger box-office sensation had it not been released during a global pandemic, but all things considered, it still did pretty well for itself. Monetary success aside, this is a rousing and thrilling superhero tale that manages to feel self-contained as it compulsorily sets the stage for a whole bunch of upcoming MCU plot twists. The 4K and Blu-ray versions include a smattering of extras, including bloopers, panel discussions with the guest villains, and behind-the-scenes featurettes.
Also available:
“C’mon C’mon” (Lionsgate): Mike Mills’ disarmingly lovely look at family ties offers Joaquin Phoenix one of the more subdued and humane characters he’s ever played.
“Death on the Nile” (20th Century Studios): Toast Kenneth Branagh’s second Agatha Christie adaptation with enough champagne to fill the… oh, you know.

‘Last Looks’ Review: It’s Weird Beard Time for Charlie Hunnam and Mel Gibson in Shaggy L.A. Whodunit

It takes some nerve casting a scandal-embattled star like Mel Gibson as a colorful TV celebrity suspected of killing his wife. Those who’ve stood by Gibson despite multiple attempts by the actor to sabotage his own career will likely admire the chutzpah of “Last Looks,” even if his flamboyantly named (and mustachioed) Alastair Pinch — a borderline-blotto, Colonel Sanders-looking Southern judge on a show called “Johnnie’s Bench” — is just a side character (the main suspect) in an overcrowded Hollywood detective story that’s got gimmicks to burn.
The ringmaster of this three-ring circus is one Charlie Waldo, a disgraced former LAPD golden boy with even wilder facial hair than Pinch. It’s like a pandemic beard, minus the pandemic.
A few years earlier, Waldo went off the grid after realizing he couldn’t undo the wrongful conviction that launched his career. Where’s Waldo now? Living in self-imposed exile — or “extraction,...

It was a strangely anti-climactic way of wrapping a low-key festival, while giving winners a chance to prep polite, crew-inclusive acceptance speeches.
Among the audience prizes, U.S. Dramatic winner “Cha Cha Real Smooth” represents the biggest sale of the festival so far, scooped up by Apple for $15 million — 1,000 times the budget of writer-director-star Cooper Raiff’s shoestring-budgeted debut, “Shithouse.”
The Festival Favorite award went to “Navalny.” This prize, selected by audiences from across all sections of the festival, recognizes a late addition to the lineup (“Navalny” was not announced until this past Monday), protected on account of its political sensitivity, as the documentary tracks Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny while he was recovering from an assassination attempt in Berlin. Accepting the honor,...

I don’t know if all of the Waldo stories are consistent. I don’t know if they can be consistent, or if Deitch would want them to be.
I kind of hope they aren’t, actually. Memory is flawed, history is misunderstood, the past is a mystery. And demon-creatures shouldn’t be completely knowable, able to be nailed down to a specific timeline.
Alias the Cat! is a Waldo story: it’s almost twenty years old now, but close to the last major Waldo story to date. It followed A Shroud for Waldo and The Boulevard of Broken Dreams (probably the centerpiece of the Waldo universe) and was in turn added onto by The Search for Smilin’ Ed. Deitch’s most recent book, Reincarnation Stories, is a similar style but doesn’t include Waldo as far as I remember.
What does any of that mean?
Well, Deitch presents himself as an autobiographical cartoonist,...

“Last Looks” isn’t your average whodunnit movie. Instead of spending two hours checking murder suspects off the list, it focuses on just one suspect. When that suspect is an eccentric Mel Gibson (“Lethal Weapon”), the audience knows they’re in for a good time. Based on a book by the same name by Howard Michael Gould, the movie follows two superstars in very different fields and chronicles what happens when their paths cross with one another.

Edson Oda’s debut feature Nine Days, is, quite simply, miraculous. This spiritual-fiction (“spi-fi”—coined by supporting lead Benedict Wong) film follows Will (Winston Duke in a god-tier performance), a metaphysical gatekeeper who tests five anthropomorphic souls for the ultimate privilege: to be born as a human. Think Willy Wonka with “gift of life” as the golden ticket, where each soul strives to prove their right to existence. Creatively ingenious, emotionally resonant, and philosophically haunting, Nine Days is at once personal and universal—and it won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at Sundance 2020. You can read my initial reaction to it here.…...

The worst Nes games of all time are a truly special breed of bad video games. Say what you will about the downsides of the modern video game industry (and there is certainly a lot to say), but there is, in most cases, a baseline standard of quality ensured by better, cheaper technology, experience, and more controlled distribution channels. You may get the occasional indie game that is basically a scam, but when it comes to major releases…well, even Cyberpunk 2077 was pretty good in a lot of ways.
That wasn’t the case during the Nes era. At a time when console gaming was basically the digital wild west, it was incredibly difficult to tell good games from bad ones, and developers often exploited that fact to get us to buy titles that refuse to leave the deepest, darkest parts of our nostalgia all these years later.
That’s the thing about these games.

The shows span genres and formats, comprising scripted series, documentaries, alternative and reality programming. The narrative feature “Coda” and the documentary “Summer of Soul” swept the top categories at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, winning the Grand Jury Prizes and also taking the audience awards in the U.S. dramatic and documentary competitions.
“Coda,” director Sian Heder’s coming-of-age story in which Emilia Jones plays the only hearing member of a deaf family, also won an award for its ensemble, many of them deaf actors who performed in ASL. Its wins come three days after the film set a record for the largest sale in Sundance history, a $25 million deal with Apple.
“Summer of Soul,” which like “Coda” screened on the festival’s opening night, is a documentary by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson built around long-unseen concert footage from the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, a six-weekend event that first-time director Questlove uses as a launching pad to explore race relations and Black culture in that tumultuous time.

The 2021 Sundance Film Festival concluded Tuesday night with a virtual awards ceremony, honoring “Coda” — a family drama centered on a high school student who is the child of deaf adults (hence the title) — with four prizes in the U.S. Dramatic Competition category: the grand jury prize, the directing prize, the audience award and a special jury prize for best ensemble.
It is the first film in Sundance history to win all three top prizes in the U.S. Dramatic category.

Exclusive: Academy Award-winning actor, director, producer and screenwriter Mel Gibson has signed with APA.
Gibson had been at CAA, but left after the exit of his primary agents Jack Whigham and Michael Cooper. They went to Range Media Partners. Gibson moved to APA to join president Jim Osborne, who started his career as one of iconic ICM agent Ed Limato’s protege assistants. Limato was Gibson’s agent forever. Gibson went with Limato to WME but parted company with the agency after Limato died, in the wake of controversial comments the actor/director made at a troubled period in his life. He spent several years regaining his footing when he was managed by former CAA honcho Rick Nicita. When Nicita retired, Gibson went to CAA.
Gibson has been busy. He currently stars in three upcoming feature films: the Tim Kirkby-directed action/thriller Last Looks opposite Morena Baccarin and Charlie Hunnam...

In 2016, Mel Gibson received a 10-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival where he premiered “Hacksaw Ridge,” which, propelled by a rapturous reception in Italy, went on to receive six Oscar nominations. That included a nod for Gibson for best director. The World War II drama was the first film Gibson had directed in more than a decade.
