Vertical has acquired North American rights to Brian Kirk’s action thriller “The Dead of Winter,” the company announced on Friday.
Starring and executive produced by Emma Thompson and also starring Judy Greer, Marc Menchaca, Laurel Marsden (“Ms. Marvel”), Gaia Wise (“The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim”), Lloyd Hutchinson (“Mickey 17”) and Brían F. O’Byrne, the film is set for theatrical release in Q4 of this year.
From a screenplay by Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb, “The Dead of Winter” follows a widowed fisherwoman (Thompson) trapped in a Minnesotan blizzard who interrupts the kidnapping of a teenager (Marsden), only to realize that she is the young victim’s only hope. The film is Kirk’s follow-up to 2019’s “21 Bridges.”

2025 has been a slow year for movies so far, as new and original films that people have been craving underperformed severely. Just recently, exciting motion pictures like the sci-fi satire Mickey 17, the action comedy Novocaine, and the spy thriller Black Bag have been pulling in less-than-stellar financial numbers despite the critical praise they've gotten. This current trend has movie fans worried that the products they're enjoying won't make a huge commercial splash.
It's not just the current year of 2025 either. 2024, the year before, also had its fair share of fantastic movies that failed to make a grand impact at the box office. These films had either spectacular action, brilliantly executed concepts, an engaging true-story narrative, or became an unexpectedly magnificent installment in a long-running franchise. Between Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, Transformers One, and Better Man, these otherwise acclaimed 2024 movies were unfortunate box office disappointments.

Beginning over a decade ago, the John Wickmovie franchise became an unexpected hit that also revived the career of star Keanu Reeves. Since its 2014 launch, it's seen three sequels, a TV show prequel and a planned spinoff movie. This success only showcases how well it's honed in on its formula, but this doesn't mean that the same popularity has been found for obvious competitors.
John Wick's revival of revenge-based action films has seen many imitators, namely the recent 2025 film Novocaine. While that movie has been well-received, its box office haul may end up being fairly tepid. Anybody who grew up in the 1990s remembers Nickelodeon's unique brand of cartoons, justifiably dubbed Nicktoons -- and it'd be difficult to argue that Hey Arnold!Isn't among the very best of them. Hey Arnold! offers up a huge cast of colorful characters in their day-to-day, exploring the urban myths and traditions of their lively city. For a cartoon aimed at the younger demographic, Hey Arnold! often tackled more mature themes and a few episodes tug on the heartstrings as well as any drama.
Hey Arnold! ran for 5 seasons -- including a theatrical movie, 2002's Hey Arnold! The Movie and 2017's The Jungle Movie -- and in that time, delivered some truly unforgettable episodes. If one had grown up in the 90s and had access to Nickelodeon, they'd likely remember several moments from Arnold's adventures navigating childhood. There are a handful of episodes that truly withstood the test...

Jack Quaid’s film has received positive reactions from critics and has been awarded a B on CinemaScore. “Conclave” won Best Film at the 2025 EE BAFTA Film Awards, leading the pack with four BAFTAs overall. The British equivalent of the Oscars took place February 16 from the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall in central London, honoring the best in film for its 78th annual edition.
Edward Berger’s “Conclave” led all films with 12 BAFTA nominations, and it won Best Film, Outstanding British Film, Best Adapted Screenplay for Peter Straughan, and Best Editing. It’s an upset after “Anora” swept all three of the DGAs, PGAs, and WGAs. The last film to win those three prizes, but not Best Picture at the Oscars was “Brokeback Mountain,” but then again, it did win the BAFTA for Best Film.
“Anora” did have a strong showing though, with Mikey Madison pulling off an upset and winning Leading Actress over Demi Moore for “The Substance.” “Anora” also won Best Casting, though Madison lost...

Brady Corbet’s epic American immigrant saga “The Brutalist” has been given the top prize by the U.K.’s leading film writers and broadcasters.
At the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday night, the feature was named film of the year in a ceremony that saw the honors widely shared across a number of titles, although notably both “The Substance” and “A Complete Unknown” came away empty-handed.
Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller “Conclave” took two awards, including British/Irish film of the year and actor of the year for Ralph Fiennes, while RaMell Ross’s radical Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” was recognised with director of the year and the technical achievement award for Jomo Fray’s first-person cinematography.
Elsewhere on the night, Jesse Eisenberg’s dark comedy “A Real Pain” was another multiple prizewinner, awarded screenwriter of the year for the actor-filmmaker, and supporting actor of the year for co-star Kieran Culkin.

In British writer-director Bryn Chaney’s feature debut, he uses Celtic folklore and the intimacy of sound to unpack a darkness that some might struggle to put in words.
Set in 1973, Rabbit Trap stars Dev Patel and Rosy McEwen as Darcy and Daphne, an influential musical couple from London who retreats to an isolated cabin in the Welsh countryside to finish their next album. But when Darcy records a sound not meant for human ears, he accidentally conjures ancient mystical beings from the forest.
Best viewed in Dolby, the film utilizes hypnotic sounds in every scene, largely through the field recordings made by Darcy in the surrounding woods. In addition to sounds of dripping water, clanging metal and crunching grass, Darcy demonstrates how the medium is sacred as he explains that “sound is a ghost … and your body is the house it haunts.”

Among another impressive stack of new horror titles looking to spook audiences at this year’s Sundance, “Rabbit Trap” joins a growing library of psychological folk horrors that have recently offered more (deeply) unsettling creeps than out-and-out scares.
Bowing in the Midnight slot in Park City on Friday and the feature debut of Brit director Bryn Chainey, the film doesn’t just boast an Oscar nominee in Dev Patel among its somewhat limited cast (there are only three characters in the entire feature), but comes with the backing of Elijah Wood’s SpectreVision.
Set in 1976 in rural Wales, “Rabbit Trap” centers on Daphne Davenport (“Blue Jean” breakout Rosy McEwen), an experimental electronic musician who, alongside her troubled husband and collaborator Darcy (Patel), has moved to a remote abandoned farmhouse in the countryside. Quick Links 'Monkey Man' Is a Spiritual Journey, First and Foremost Dev Patel Knows How to Film an Action Scene in 'Monkey Man' 'Monkey Man' Shows a Bright Future for Patel as a Director
No matter how many of us try to avoid the irritating pitter-patter of award season, we usually find ourselves drawn into it regardless. It's a perfect storm of movie discourse — combining people using the words 'overrated' and 'underrated' liberally and their desire to explain why we don't get the Best Picture's symbolism. It's also a good moment to reflect on the past year for movies, where we have been, and where we might go next. Dev Patel's Monkey Man is an example of the heights 2024 took us to, and it's no surprise that it's being shut out of awards conversations. It's a shame because it's really good, but this happens every year.

There is no telling about tastes. Dev Patel’s senseless bloodbath Monkey Man (Dev plans a Hanuman avatar) has been nominated for a BAFTA award in the Outstanding Debut as director category. Sobhita Dhulipala who has a role as commodious as Jacqueline Fernandez in Fateh, is very happy.
I am happy for her. But not quite in the waltzy mode over the film. Watching Dev Patel’s much-extolled directorial debut, rightly banned in India and from Netflix where it was scheduled for streaming, is a painful experience. The stylized relentless violence, with stunt passages choreographed like the opposite of a ballet, are sickening in their self-important gratuitousness.
But I would forgive the endless pointless carnage—to each his own John Wick, I guess—were it not for the strange uncalled-for references to Hindu mythology that keep popping up with nagging regularity all through the sanguinary excursion, as if to remind...

Action movies are dismissed in some circles as mindless displays of violence, but many of the genre's best movies are just as deep and intelligent as any drama. The action genre tends to get a bad wrap, because people generalize the genre based on some of its least substantial popcorn flicks. While it's true that action has the potential for shallow spectacle, this isn't the norm.
Many of the best action movies ever have deep stories that leave audiences with a lot to think about, even if some people simply see them as explosive and entertaining. Today, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) released the film nominations for 2025, with two international films leading the list. Edward Berger’s papal thriller Conclave received 12 nominations, and Jacques Audiard’s musical Emilia Pérez received 11 nominations.
Both films have open categories for the best film, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. The Brutalist, directed by Brady Corbet and a Golden Globe winner, has received nine nominations.
Universal Pictures led the nominations this year with 32 for its films. The studio has had success with several productions: “The Brutalist” received nine nominations, “Anora” and “Wicked” got seven each, “Nosferatu” had five, “The Wild Robot” got three, and “Monkey Man” received one. Netflix trails behind with 16 nominations, partly thanks to “Emilia Pérez.”

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña...

Universal is absolutely towering over the studios and streamers when it comes to this year’s BAFTA nominations.
Thanks to “The Brutalist” (nine nominations), “Anora” and “Wicked” (seven each), plus “Nosferatu” (five), “The Wild Robot” (three) and “Monkey Man” (one), Universal and its offshoot label Focus Features have amassed an astonishing 32 nominations in total, twice that of its nearest competitor, Netflix. The streamer landed 16 overall, led by the 11 from “Emilia Pérez.”
But Universal could have had five more had it not offloaded Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror “The Substance” before Cannes.
Further down, the nascent distributor Black Bear U.K. had a phenomenal year thanks to the 11 nominations for “Conclave”, and three for “Sing Sing.” Black Bear’s total of 12 was two up on Disney, which earned 10, most coming from Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown.”

The 2025 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are in – here’s a look at the snubs and the snub-ies.
With A Real Pain star Will Sharpe and last year’s Rising Star Award winner Mia McKenna Bruce taking on hosting duties, the results are in for the films BAFTA’s 8,100 film awards voters consider the best of 2024.
It’s a lovely afternoon for Conclave and Emilia Pérez, leading the awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively, and a slightly less lovely afternoon for Daniel Craig (who missed out on a Best Actor nod for Queer) and Denzel Washington, who holds onto his title as a no-time BAFTA-nominee after Gladiator II failed to register with voters.
Among the biggest surprises is the addition of Hugh Grant in the Best Actor category for his creepy-man role in Heretic – together with the three nominations for Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance, 2025 is already showing the horror genre much more love than previous years.

Julia Roberts is one of the most influential and iconic actresses to have ever gotten success in Hollywood. An Oscar-winner for Erin Brockovich, Roberts is also seen as the one actress who single-handedly bridged the gap between the salaries of male and female actors.
This journey, began with 1990’s Pretty Woman, which paid her just $300k for a role she eventually became iconic for. However, while she would go on to become the most well-paid female actor in the industry, her work on Pretty Woman also brought her backlash from feminists.

Marco (2024) Movie Review: There is a reason that the word “hero” has become synonymous with “protagonist” in Indian mainstream cinema; the lead role in a given mass masala film is almost always a morally upstanding and decent person who fights for the weak, even if they initially appear otherwise. Yet there has always been a craving for more “grey-shaded” roles from the filmgoing audience. Ajith Kumar’s iconic villainous turn in the Tamil film “Mankatha” (2011) had an impact that is still felt today, as the promise of a similar villainous role for “Thalapathy” Vijay from director Venkat Prabhu was a major selling point of “The Greatest of All Time.” Even “Kgf”, one of the most influential franchises in current memory, is planning to bring back Yash’s Rocky bhai character who, as both films hurry to assure us, is not a hero but a “villain” and even a “monster!

Tom Cruise is considered the biggest action star working right now, and for good reason. He is in his 60s, he is still running as fast as some of the most brilliant athletes out there and performing the wildest vehicular stunts imaginable. And it doesn’t seem like he is in the mood to vacate that throne yet. But that doesn’t mean actors from all over the globe aren’t trying to live up to the standards he has set, especially in terms of doing their own stunts. Raymond Lam Fung knocked it out of the park in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Dev Patel was excellent in Monkey Man. Emilio Sakraya took everyone’s breath away in Sixty Minutes. Jun Jong-seo surprised everyone in Ballerina. The work done by Alban Lenoir in the two Lost Bullet films are inspirational. Joe Taslim, Iko Uwais, Cecep Arif Rahman, Julie Estelle,...

2024 has been a relatively strong year for the action genre. Jason Statham's The Beekeeper started the year off on a high note, becoming a surprise hit. The film did so well, in fact, that The Beekeeper 2 is now confirmed to be on the way. After Dune: Part Two dazzled audiences with its sci-fi action, movies like Monkey Man and The Fall Guy hit theaters, with the latter disappointing at the box office but faring well with critics and audiences.
The summer and fall saw the release of a handful of other notable titles in the action genre, including Bad Boys: Ride or Die, which was a hit, and Twisters, a well-received reboot of the 1996 classic. Wolfs also featured plenty of action, as did Ridley Scott's Gladiator 2. Another title that hit theaters earlier in the year earned overwhelmingly positive reviews despite failing to make much of a mark at the box office,...

Emilia Pérez and Conclave led the British Academy of Film and Television Arts longlist selections on Friday, the first step toward securing BAFTA Awards nominations when the list of official 2025 award contenders is revealed on Jan. 15.
Netflix’s top contender Emilia Pérez landed on 15 longlists — tying a record set by Netflix’s All Quiet on the Western Front two years ago and Oppenheimer, Killers of the Flower Moon, and Barbie last year. Among its mentions were Best Film, Best Film Not in English Language, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay for Jacques Audiard, and four longlist nods for its quartet of actresses — with Karla Sofia Gascon hitting the lead actress longlist and co-stars Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz all appearing on the supporting actress longlist. The four actresses shared the Best Actress honors at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, where Emilia Pérez made its debut.

The British Academy has unveiled the results of the first round of voting across all 25 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with two very different thrillers leading the pack of longlisted features.
Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language music-thriller that was picked up by Netflix in Cannes, has emerged ahead of the race with slots in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress and three in the supporting actress list. Meanwhile “Conclave,” Focus Features’ Papal mystery-thriller from Edward Berger set within the Vatican, has 14, including best film, director and leading actor for Ralph Fiennes.
Further down, a tight pack of films includes “The Substance,” “The Brutalist” and “A Complete Unknown” on 11 lists, “Wicked” and “Dune: Part Two” on 10 and “Anora” and “Gladiator 2” on nine. All, with the exception of “Gladiator 2,” are on the best film longlist. Ridley Scott’s epic return to the coliseum also missed out...

Even though there’s still $2 billion to $3 billion missing in the post Covid annual domestic box office, there was plenty to be thankful for in 2024 which is coming in at an estimated $8.72 billion, -3% from 2023’s $9 billion. That figure is factored from Comscore and Deadline calculations.
First of all, many were expecting 2024 to final at $8 billion, so the fact that we’re $720M beyond that point in a year which was half wrecked by the aftermath of the strikes, is praiseworthy. There were fewer tentpoles in Q1, not to mention there wasn’t a Marvel Studios movie to fire up summer in early May (that didn’t come until late July with Deadpool & Wolverine which at $211.4M is the highest opening of the year).
Before the first weekend in May, the domestic box office was lagging -20% behind 2023’s running cume. As of yesterday, the U.S./Canada 2024 box...

Former CIA officer John Kiriakou has given a high accuracy score to Dev Patel's true story movie about the 2008 Mumbai attacks, which came out in 2019. Patel's best movies see him in thrilling roles, portraying captivating characters that are highly unique depending on the story he's contributing to. This includes everything from his theatrical debut in 2008's Slumdog Millionaire, to his first directorial movie as the lead character in 2024's Monkey Man. His performances are often memorable thanks to the way he commands the screen whenever he's front-and-center.
Beyond original stories for the big screen, Patel has also starred in multiple adaptations of existing works. This includes 2019's The Personal History of David Copperfield, where he played the title character, and 2021's The Green Knight, where he was the Arthurian knight Gawain. However, his talent also stretches into movies based on real events, like portraying mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan in...

"Sometimes I dream..." Time for one more stunning look back at the past year in movies. Are your favorites included? As 2024 winds down and we get ready to jump right into 2025, cinema lovers have been making their own video recaps and trailer mashups. One of them that debuted just days before the New Year arrives is this one created by a filmmaker / editor known as Clementine Narcisse who often just goes by simply "Clementine". Her 2024 in Film video is a ravishing, refreshing, amusing roundup of some of her favorite films from this year. I'm delighted to see her include a bunch of under-the-radar picks that aren't mentioned as much as they should by others - terriific films such as Monkey Man, Problemista, Blink Twice, Bird, The Outrun, Cuckoo, Saturday Night, The Last Showgirl, Love Lies Bleeding, Oddity, The Shadow Strays. Her editing in this so good, especially cutting together all...

From Paul and Feyd’s climactic knife fight in Dune: Part Two to Lucius and Macrinus’ climactic swordfight in Gladiator II, the movies of 2024 have brought a bunch of great fight scenes. A good fight scene can really invigorate an audience. It’s a chance for stunt choreographers to get creative, and it can be a crowd-pleasing moment when a noble hero violently triumphs over a despicable villain.
2024 has delivered both gruesome, blood-soaked fight scenes, like the nightclub sequence in Monkey Man, and hilarious slapstick set-pieces, like the cartoonish saloon brawl in Hundreds of Beavers. There were even great fight scenes in non-action movies, like the body horror opus The Substance. From the final showdown in Boy Kills World to the multiversal mayhem of Deadpool & Wolverine, 2024’s movies have been jam-packed with well-staged fight scenes.

2024 was an exceptionally strong year for cinematography, with several standout films that represent the art form at its apex. Perhaps what’s most welcome about these films is their variety, not only in terms of genre and tone but also budget and position in the marketplace. From the studio system, we have Greig Fraser’s extraordinary work on “Dune: Part Two,” which doubles down on the ambition and tactile detail of Fraser’s work on its predecessor (for which he justly received an Academy Award) to create one of the most flat-out beautiful epics since the glory days of David Lean. From the world of low-budget, independent filmmaking, we have “I Saw the TV Glow,” where cinematographer Eric Yue designs a meticulous and expressive visual corollary for his protagonist’s inner state. Like Fraser, cinematographer Lawrence Sher brings more innovation to his approach to a sequel — in Sher’s case,...

2024's best action movies range from big-budget sci-fi epics to martial arts thrillers. There has been a lot of variety in the biggest action movies of the year. Some big franchises returned for highly-anticipated sequels, but there has also been enough room for original stories, some of which could yet act as the launch pad for emerging new talents in the genre. Overall, 2024 has been a strong year for action movies, even though the box office hasn't always reflected this.
Some true greats of the action genre returned to cinemas in 2024. Directors like Guy Ritchie, George Miller, and David Leitch all released new movies, but there were plenty of surprises too. Dev Patel's Monkey Man showcased his talents as a martial arts star and a director, while Jake Gyllenhaal's Road House remake massively surpassed expectations. 2024 has shown that the action genre is alive and well, and as...
