Saturday Am: Sony’s second weekend of Marvel Venom: The Last Dance is holding better than expected with -56% or $22.2M; which is the same second weekend percentage hold as 2018’s Venom.
However, the studio isn’t looking at one-two punch with first and second as their release of Miramax’s Here is falling flat with $5.15M off a $50M production cost in fourth — which was to be expected. Even if this Robert Zemeckis-Tom Hanks-Robin Wright-scribe Eric Roth Forrest Gump reunion opened at its projection of $7M, it wouldn’t be anything to exclaim. Here received a B-, which is the same grade as Zemeckis’ experimental dud Welcome to Marwen back in 2018.
By the way, Here isn’t the lowest opening for Zemeckis or Hanks. Zemeckis’ Welcome to Marwen crashed with a $2.35M over the Christmas holidays off a $50M production cost, while Hanks has...

Following his “Armageddon Time” drama, filmmaker James Gray has been attached to direct a series about the life of Norman Mailer and a biopic about a young John F. Kennedy. Still, sometimes, projects in Hollywood come together fast, especially when there’s a hot cast attached. Exclusive: Amid a surfeit of horror projects heading to next week’s American Film Market, here instead comes a legit blue chip crime-drama-thriller in the shape of James Gray’s next movie, Paper Tiger, which will star Oscar nominee Adam Driver, Emmy and Tony winner Jeremy Strong and Oscar winner Anne Hathaway.
This is the type of project buyers we’ve spoken to this week have been crying out for. Something elevated. Five of Gray’s films have competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Editor’s note: There has been no feature film this year more controversial than the Ali Abbasi-directed pic The Apprentice, which deconstructs the carefully designed character that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has created over decades. Threatened with legal action by the Trump campaign before struggling to find domestic distribution, the feature finally released in the U.S. this month and has come in for praise for Abbasi’s direction, Gabriel Sherman’s script and performances from Sebastian Stan as Trump, Jeremy Strong as the grim lawyer Roy Cohn and Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump. Here, the film’s Canadian producer, Dan Bekerman, says dismantling’s Trump’s persona removes the moral judgment and allows viewers to decide for themselves — just as they will do Tuesday on Election Day.

The critically acclaimed Donald Trump biopic The Apprentice — which the former president has repeatedly denounced — is heading to cinemas in a somewhat surprising place: Russia.
The film, written by veteran Vanity Fair reporter Gabriel Sherman and directed by rising Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi, has landed a Russian distribution deal and is scheduled to open on 800 screens across the country on Friday. Moscow-based distributor Arna Media is handling the release after acquiring the local rights to the film last month from U.K. sales agent Rocket Science. Sources close to the film say that only modest cuts were required to get the movie into Russia.
The Russia release plan stands somewhat in contrast to the real Donald Trump’s reportedly cozy relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has drastically curtailed any artistic expression he deems unwelcome to his regime’s interests. Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Across the River and Into the Trees (Paula Ortiz)
Hemingway’s work across novels and short stories has been adapted for film countless times over, yet Across the River and Into the Trees has never properly been rendered onscreen. Until now. Written by Peter Flannery and directed by Paula Ortiz, here is a handsome film that is decidedly modest in its endeavor. The best thing going for it is Liev Schreiber as Colonel Richard Cantwell, the lead of the picture. Schreiber is one of those actors who has somehow always been underrated, despite being capable of playing nearly any kind of part. A kind boyfriend thrust into an impossible familial situation (The Daytrippers)? Check. Tough-but-fractured fixer living on the edge (Ray Donovan)? Check.

The poster tells the story of the show: Newlyweds look forlorn as they stand knee-deep in a tropical ocean with only a bobbing red suitcase for company. As the title confirms, the unlucky couple are Stranded on Honeymoon Island.
The series (think Married at First Sight meets Survivor) was one of the buzziest new formats at Cannes’ MIPCOM television market last week — and the poster, which adorned the walls of a Palais stand, said much about the interconnected nature of the business. Here, in this sunny corner of France, was a German producer selling a show born in Denmark, raised in Belgium, and putting down roots in the UK.
Stranded on Honeymoon Island’s home on British shores is the BBC. Three sources tell Deadline that the national broadcaster secured the show amid interest from ITV and Channel 4 after it was auctioned by Cpl, the maker of Love Is Blind: UK.

Elon Musk has attracted the wrath of his daughter, Vivian Jenna Wilson, yet again. The tech giant’s attendance at Donald Trump’s recent rally in Madison Square Garden was subject to criticism from Wilson. The rally itself was controversial for Trump loyalists’ alleged racist remarks and the Republican nominee’s focus on immigration.
Vivian Jenna Wilson and Elon Musk reportedly have a troubled relationship, especially after the former came out as trans when she was sixteen. Earlier this year, Musk reportedly mentioned that the ‘woke virus’ had ruined his daughter (still calling her his son). Wilson retaliated against Musk’s claims in the interview and called him out.

Dwayne Johnson has found himself slipping between multiple different fields and managing to ace pretty much every single one as he navigated his way through them all. What initially started with a career in wrestling progressed with him becoming an actor in Hollywood and eventually a successful businessman. His latest gig was to leap into Donald Trump’s specialized field.

However, he called off all possibilities of the same last year, and now it seems like this might as well be one of the smartest decisions that Johnson took, considering Trump’s latest confession about being a US president.

Despite critical and audience reception, many fellow filmmakers have had positive reactions to Francis Ford Coppola’s passion project, Megalopolis. Some of his directing peers have glowed about the film in some recent reactions, including Guillermo Del Toro stating, “Francis is still the same bold, fearless, inventive filmmaker that he was in his 20’s. I was Swept by Megalopolis!” and Steven Soderbergh exclaiming, “Wow! This might be the craziest thing ever shot on American soil. Certainly, one of the most sustained acts of pure imagination I’ve ever seen. I dreamt about it all night—it was inspiring!”
Now, famously political director Oliver Stone has spoken about how extraordinary he’s found the film as he talks about his favorite recent watches on Facebook. Stone starts his list saying, “Francis Coppola’s “Megalopolis” (2024). Scoff if you’re of that nature, but I deeply admire his commitment to his vision. On a visual scale,...

Donald Trump may have put in his final pitch for his presidential campaign in a three-hour conversation with Joe Rogan on his podcast. Rogan and Trump touched upon several topics during their talk, and the former President spoke about Abraham Lincoln at one point. However, he got one Lincoln fact so wrong, which was not expected from a self-proclaimed history buff.

Besides the discussion on Lincoln, Trump also reiterated his claims of election fraud in 2020, which has been debunked since. He also shared his idea of introducing tariffs and eliminating federal income tax. Notably, Rogan was initially against the idea of bringing Trump on his podcast, addressing it on the new episode.

What are some words that come to mind when you think about Donald Trump? Businessman? Conservative? Tasteless? Misogynist? Grating on the ears? One of the most controversial and polarizing films of the year, everyone has something to say about ‘The Apprentice’, but does it stick too close to the center of the road? And is releasing a film of this nature at this moment a good idea? These are questions that will be answered in the fullness of time, but what we know for sure now is that ‘The Apprentice’ has incredible production design and knockout performances that really bring these monsters to life, all to the...

At TV market Mipcom, Ramin Setoodeh, Variety‘s co-editor-in-chief, spoke on Wednesday about how Donald Trump’s public persona was forged by reality TV series “The Apprentice,” and how it is that “character” who is running for the U.S. presidency today.

As research for the book, Setoodeh interviewed Trump six times after his presidential term ended, as well as interviewing more than 50 key players involved in “The Apprentice.” He also drew on other conversations with Trump before he became president.
Setoodeh argued that the lessons Trump learned making the show still guide him. “Donald Trump views the world through the lens of reality TV,” Setoodeh said. “He’s a reality TV star,...

Adrien Brody and Nicole Kidman are back in the Oscars race this year with their respective films “The Brutalist” and “Babygirl” from A24, both already making the rounds in the awards contention with strong festival premieres. The stars are now looking to claim victory in their respective categories of Best Actor and Best Actress, and if that sounds familiar, it’s because they both won these same races 22 years ago for “The Pianist” and “The Hours.” Can they strike gold for the second time and become the first duo in Oscars history to win the lead categories twice in the same years?
The year of 2002 was considered one of the most unpredictable Oscar seasons in multiple main categories. Starting with Kidman and “The Hours,” the Stephen Daldry movie took home Golden Globe Awards for Best Drama Actress and Best Drama Motion Picture, along with writing accolades for David Hare at...

Controversial drama The Apprentice has bombed stateside but it’s attracting bigger audiences in other parts of the world
I’ll be the first to admit that I did not want to watch The Apprentice, the new film chronicling Donald Trump’s ascendancy through 1970s and 80s New York. Like most people in my liberal social circle, my reaction to the movie’s existence was essentially: why? Why watch two hours of a de-handsomed (though still recognizable) Sebastian Stan as the young real estate mogul, and Jeremy Strong as his mentor Roy Cohn, go through events I already know – if not in exact detail, than certainly in spirit – in the life of a man I actively wish I knew less about?
And yet I found the film, written by Vanity Fair’s Trump chronicler Gabriel Sherman and directed by Iranian Danish film-maker Ali Abbasi, to be surprising. Not in material...

Two new films cracked the box-office weekend top ten this past weekend, and one of them – Smile 2 – took over first place by a margin of $12.9 million.
Paramount Pictures saw the horror sequel Smile 2 debut in first place this weekend as it took in $23.0 million over its first few days in release. This was more than enough to best second-place finisher The Wild Robot which held onto second place for another week with $10.1 million. This gives the Universal Pictures product a four-week total of $101.7 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s top film, Cineverse’s Terrifier 3 fell two spots to land in third place where it took in $9.3 million to lift its overall total to $36.2 million. Similarly, Warner Bros. saw Beetlejuice Beetlejuice remained steady in fourth place, adding $5.0 million over the weekend, raising the film’s seven-week total to $284.0 million. Jeremy Strong is giving a little insight into his forthcoming role in the upcoming Bruce Springsteen biopic starring Jeremy Allen White.
While promoting The Apprentice opposite co-star Sebastian Stan in a recent interview with NME, Strong said one of the albums he has continually returned to is the rock singer-songwriter’s raw and introspective Nebraska. When asked about the connection between his answer and the upcoming feature, the actor confirmed reports from May that he would be in the project, as the singer’s longtime manager Jon Landau.
“Yeah, I am,” he said of being in the pic. “But I’d always felt that way about that album. Something about Nebraska just always spoke to me. There’s a melancholy to it. There’s a narrative to it that comes from a very deep place in him and you can feel that.”

Update: Paramount Pictures and Temple Hill’s Smile 2 scored an estimated $23m bow to lead the North American box office in a weekend that saw a good hold by Terrifier 3, while Cannes Palme d’Or winner Anora scored the highest per-screen average of 2024 so far.
Smile 2 writer-director Parker Finn recorded his second number one debut for his horror franchise after the original opened top in 2022 on $22.6m, which will have pleased Paramount executives, who said on average horror sequels open 26% behind the original.

For theaters still in shock over the historic collapse of “Joker: Folie à Deux” (Warner Bros.), there’s optimism with the “Smile 2” opening of $23 million and Sean Baker’s strong award contender “Anora” (Neon) becoming the year’s best platform debut. (Baker’s also joining IndieWire’s Future of Filmmaking Summit November 2.)
In its third weekend, Todd Phillips’ film grossed under $2.2 million to drop another 69 percent and place sixth. With $56.4 million in, its domestic gross will fall short of $65 million. Bad for the studio and worse for the theaters that counted on another $135 million or so in box office revenue (and accompanying concessions).
With “Smile 2,” Parker Finn’s sequel to his 2022 horror success inched slightly ahead of the original’s opening weekend, which went on to gross $90 million. “Smile 2” will have a hard time replicating that, particularly with “Venom: The Last Dance” (Sony) debuting this Friday.

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures held its annual gala on Saturday night honoring Paul Mescal, Rita Moreno and Quentin Tarantino while raising over $11 million to support the exhibitions, education initiatives and public programming at the L.A. museum, which opened in 2021.
The fourth annual event, one of Hollywood’s most star-studded nights, was co-chaired by Dr. Eric Esrailian, Salma Hayek Pinault, Nicole Kidman, Eva Longoria and Tyler Perry. The night’s guest list ranged from Hollywood icons — Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, Meg Ryan, Joaquin Phoenix and Julia Louis-Dreyfus — to relative newcomers, including Anora‘s Mikey Madison, Queer‘s Drew Starkey, Babygirl‘s Harris Dickinson, recent Emmy winner Anna Sawai and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez.
