At first glance, “The Recruit” may look like your standard espionage drama, but beneath its splashy action scenes and quippy one-liners that’s not the case. That’s as true in Season 2 as it was in Season 1.

While the actor has proven time and again that he has a wide array of acting skills, January will put two widely different projects right next to each other and leave them up for comparison. The rom-com series Xo, Kitty, and the action series The Recruit are two of Netflix’s biggest releases in January.

The Hollywood Reporter has reported Camila Mendes is attached to be our new Teela in Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films’ live-action reboot of Masters of the Universe. She will be joining heartthrob, Nicholas Galitzine, 29, starring in the role opposite He-Man.

Polish production company Gigant Films will remake Titas Laucius’ feature debut, “Parade.” It will start shooting this year under the working title “Divorcees” (“Rozwodnicy”)

The Lithuanian film, inspired by Laucius’ own family, world premiered at Tallinn Black Night Film Festival in November. When the subject of homegrown Kentucky production companies comes up these days, the first name out of anyone’s mouth is Wrigley Media Group, which is transforming an abandoned multiplex in the city of Lexington into a full-service state-of-the-art art 52,000-sq.-ft. studio complex, dubbed Wrigley Woodhill Studios.

Currently, it has a single soundstage, which is hosting the second season of the group’s nationally syndicated courtroom reality show “Relative Justice,” starring Judge Rhonda Wills. But when the second phase of the renovation is finished in early 2023, it will be the largest studio facility in Kentucky, with room to host outside productions drawn to the commonwealth by its revived film and TV incentive, featuring a 30-35 refundable tax credit.

“We developed ‘Relative Justice’ and sold it into most of the country, and then we had to make it,” says Ross Babbit, Wrigley Media’s executive producer and chief content officer.

When the Kentucky legislature made the commonwealth’s 30-35 film and TV tax credit nonrefundable in 2018, it cast a pall over the careers of local industry pros including Louisville native Emily Blevins, who had racked up credits as a production manager or producer on a dozen Lifetime movies shot in the Bluegrass state.

Although 428 million in credits had been approved under the old version of the incentive, which paid cash to productions for any credits they earned that were not eaten up by their tax bill, there was no guarantee the projects that had applied for the credits would actually shoot in Kentucky. And once those approved projects were completed, the jobs would be gone, because Kentucky would no longer be able to compete against production hotbeds with stronger incentives such as Georgia, its neighbor to the south.

“We were going to have to move or change our careers,” says Blevins.

The film centers on a murder that takes place during a high school reunion party and has already attracted a cast of comedy heavyweights and in-demand actors. Doan will appear alongside Lil Rel Howery, Billy Magnussen, Jillian Bell, Nina Dobrev, Jamie Chung, Michael Hitchcock and Chace Crawford. Chris Nelson (“The Perfect Date”) is directing the film from a screenplay by the “The Edge of Sleep” writing duo, Jake Emanuel and Willie Block.

Doan was part of the main cast of Cinemax’s “Warrior,” playing Mai Ling. She also appeared as Lonnie in the Disney Channel original movies “Descendants” and “Descendants 2.” Other credits include “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” “Good Trouble” and “Vikings.” It’s unclear what role she will play in “Reunion.”

The movie is the first greenlit project for Artists Road, the comedy film joint venture that was formed in October by Spyglass Media Group, Propagate Content, Artists First and Off-Road Productions. The pic puts a darkly humorous spin on the classic whodunnit. It centers on a murder that takes place during a snowstorm at a high school reunion party, which leaves guests trapped in an isolated mansion trying to piece together clues.

Howery and Bell previously appeared together in “Brittany Runs a Marathon,” the acclaimed 2019 Amazon comedy. Bell’s credits also include “Rough Night,” “Cowboys,” and “Godmothered,” while Howery has appeared in the likes of “Get Out,” “Tag” and the upcoming “Free Guy.

Zack Snyder’s zombie epic “Army of the Dead” is off to a strong start on Netflix, as the streamer reports (via Deadline) that the movie is expected to be viewed by 72 million households over its first four weeks of release. That number puts “Army of the Dead” in the number 10 spot on the list of biggest Netflix original openings. “Army of the Dead” opened to the same household views as George Clooney’s “The Midnight Sky,” which launched over the Christmas holiday last year. Noah Centineo is leaving teen dramas behind ... for now.

The Fosters and To All The Boys franchise star has landed the lead role on an upcoming CIA drama at Netflix.

Deadline first reported the news, which also revealed the actor would have a producing credit on the series.

The eight-episode show comes from Entertainment One, Doug Liman's Hypnotic and creator, and showrunner Alexi Hawley (The Rookie).

The project is currently untitled, and centers on a young lawyer at the CIA (Centineo) who gets entangled in dangerous international power plays when a former agency asset threatens to expose her relationship with the CIA — unless they help clear her name in a serious crime.

It's an interesting hook, and one that should be a big hit with the Netflix audience.

If the streamer has taught us anything, it's that it can keep viewers engaged for every single beat of its roster of drama series.

Aladdin star Mena Massoud has picked up his next big role as he's been tapped by Netflix to star alongside Laura Marano in the upcoming romantic drama The Royal Treatment. Written by Holly Hester Marano, the movie is directed by Rick Jacobson. Ellen Marano and Vanessa Marano for Calabrian Rhode will also produce with Chloe Smith, and Steve Berman and Dan Read will executive produce for Ffi.

The Royal Treatment is a love story following Isabella (Ellen Marano) and Prince Thomas (Mena Massoud). Per Deadline, the story picks up as "Isabella runs her own salon and isn't afraid to speak her mind, while Prince Thomas runs his own country and is about to marry for duty rather than love. When Izzy and her fellow stylists get the opportunity of a lifetime to do the hair for the royal wedding, she and Prince Thomas learn that taking control of their own destiny requires following their hearts.

Exclusive: Riverdale’s Camila Mendes and Stranger Things‘ Maya Hawke have been tapped to lead Strangers, the Netflix feature film from director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson that follows her feature directorial debut Someone Great, also for the streamer.

Robinson and Celeste Ballard co-wrote the pic, which is described as a subverted Hitchock-ian dark comedy featuring the scariest protagonists of all: teenage girls. It follows Drew and Eleanor who, after a clandestine meet-cute, team up to go after each other’s bullies.

Robinson is producing the pic with Anthony Bregman and Peter Cron for Likely Story under their overall deal with Netflix.
