In 1714, an Englishman from Kent arrived in Virginia. He claimed the land which incorporates this movie's fictional "Ravenswick" estate. In 1806, his nephew inherited the property and built a 2-story, 6-room Greek Revival house between 1839-1841. Later, the house was renovated into an Italianate Villa (with gothic detailing) between 1852-1857.
