The Alien franchise is set to continue on the small screen with an “FX on Hulu” TV series from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, a show that began filming last year, then had to halt production after a month due to the actors strike. Filming resumed earlier this year, and continues to this day. A few months ago, we heard that Sandra Yi Sencindiver of Foundation had joined the cast to play “a senior member of the Weyland-Yutani Corporation” in multiple episodes… and in a new interview with Variety, Sencindiver said she believes that fans of Alien and Aliens will be pleased with what Hawley is doing with this show.
One of the first things we heard about the Alien TV series – and one of the most surprising things about it – is that it will actually be set on Earth, a couple decades before the events of the first movie. FX...

“Bridgerton” alumnus Simone Ashley is happy that Shonda Rhimes’ hit Netflix show, now in its third season, continues to empower its viewers.
“It really has! I don’t think it’s that surprising – we are all strong women in this show. It was only natural it was going to happen, I think. We have strong women writers and they want to portray women in that [position of] power,” she tells Variety.
“This show is full of such joy.”
On Friday, Ashley received the International Golden Nymph for Most Promising Talent from Albert II, Prince of Monaco, at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, and took the opportunity to thank the “Bridgerton” team and the “many, many beloved fans.”
“This season is led by the phenomenally talented Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton. As I stand here, I can’t help but feel so excited for everything that’s ahead for them,” she said from the stage.

When LGBTQ community-gathering spaces were largely put on pause by the pandemic, those once-in-person safe havens became our streaming platforms and technical devices at home. Hyper-specific pop subcultures emerged — here’s looking at you, queer readers of the generally awful “Friends” — and reputations for streamers’ philosophies toward and commitment to LGBTQ content were widely discussed online. (Shout out to Showtime: the premium cable network still servicing lesbians everywhere.)
Even as the world has opened back up, in Hollywood, it feels like queer storytelling and community are more galvanized than ever. Nowhere is that more tidily displayed than on the carousels of “LGBTQ” offerings found across entertainment platforms. Netflix, a heavyweight in any streaming conversation (regardless of its rocky 2022), has played a significant role in green-lighting major queer-inclusive projects across television and film. In his recent BAFTA TV Awards acceptance speech for best male performance in a comedy, British comic Mawaan Rizwan recalled a conversation with his therapist earlier that week about how he “needed to stop relying on external forms of validation… so, bad timing!”
But, just about a month after taking home the award (over the likes of David Tennant) for his BBC sitcom “Juice,” it seems like that validation is here to stay. Rizwan is currently in New York, where the first episode of the wild, cartoonish and trippy series screened to a sold-out — and, by all accounts, hugely enthusiastic — crowd at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday. There’s another sold-out screening on Wednesday, while a third has been hastily arranged for next Sunday to cope with demand.

Huge Netflix series have come to an end in recent years like Sex Education and Orange Is The New Black. Other shows such as I Am Not Okay With This and The Order have also been given the axe by the global streaming giant. Interestingly, Netflix is commissioning brand new instalments of several popular series to boost content. This move may aim to win back fans and retain subscribers following a subscriber drop after last year’s price hikes. Popular Shows Making a Comeback Let’s take a closer look at some of the revived series currently grabbing viewers’ attention: Survival Of...

Greg Peters, co-ceo of Netflix, paid tribute to the streamer’s U.K. production pipeline at a conference in London on Tuesday morning local time.
Peters cited shows including David Beckham’s docuseries “Beckham” and the controversial series “Baby Reindeer” as well as “One Day,” “Fool Me Once,” “Heartstopper,” “Top Boy” and “The Crown” as some of the U.K. shows that had succeeded on the platform, calling them “tremendously diverse” in terms of their content.
He restated the streamer’s commitment to investing in U.K. content, which has been significant since Netflix’s global launch in 2016. “We’ve continued to invest heavily in our slate,” he said.
“It’s why we continue to invest, continue to grow, even as competitors are going back.”

You've probably heard of Baby Reindeer, a miniseries that came out on Netflix and became an instant hit on the streaming service with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
A human tragedy, a confession, and a course in self-therapy, all contained in seven episodes, turned the soul of anyone who watched it inside out. Beginning as a black comedy, episode by episode it becomes something more — a story about pain, masculinity, self-identification, rehabilitation, and much more.
Baby Reindeer's Main Villain Wasn't Martha
The story of stalker Martha reveals, as the series progresses, a deeper trauma — rape, manipulation, and gaslighting — that the author experienced during his college years at the hands of his older "patron" and "mentor," 55-year-old screenwriter Darrien.
The author reveals the main pain of his life completely unexpectedly, even forcing the viewer to put the series aside for a few days. Against the backdrop of this episode, Martha...

While Netflix has expanded the type of programming it offers, most recently venturing into live sports and other events, co-ceo Ted Sarandos has indicated in a new interview that news is not for Netflix.
“We don’t do breaking news and that kind of thing, because I think there’s a lot of other outlets for it. People aren’t looking to us for that,” Sarandos told The New York Times in a wide-ranging interview that ran online Saturday when asked what’s not right for Netflix. Yet the executive — whose company a year ago launched an ad tier — in the same answer said he’s open to new things: “I don’t think that there’s a clean answer because the best version of something may work really well for Netflix but just hasn’t worked to date.”

Exclusive: Still Up, Apple TV+’s insomnia comedy starring The Good Doctor fan favorite Antonia Thomas and Craig Roberts, has been axed after one season.
The series was quietly shelved earlier this year, we are told, having launched in September 2023.
Produced by I May Destroy You maker Various Artists and created by Natalie Walter and Steve Burge, Still Up followed the exploits of Lisa (Thomas), an impulsive and free-spirited aspiring illustrator whose questions over her daughter’s future start keeping her up at night, and the socially anxious yet gifted journalist Danny, played by Submarine’s Roberts. The pair have no secrets, except their feelings for each other, and while the world sleeps they spend their long nights talking despite never meeting.
Other cast included Blake Harrison (The Inbetweeners), Lois Chimimba (The One), Luke Fetherston (Flowers in the Attic), Rich Fulcher (The Mighty Boosh) and Sam Spiro (Sex Education).

Freshman drama Obliterated held the dubious distinction of being the most watched Netflix series in the second half of 2023 to be canceled, according to the streamer’s viewership data made public today. Released Nov. 30, the action comedy was #20 in the rankings for the six-month period, generating 27M views in its first month of release.
The high position should not come as a surprise as Obliterated spent a respectable six weeks in the Netflix Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at #1 in Week 2.
Since the streamer largely bases its renewal decisions on analyzing viewing vs. cost, the size of the latter must have outweighed the magnitude of the former, which would also explain why a show like Sweet Magnolias (#37 on the list with 20.9M views over 5+ months), was comfortably renewed.
Another expensive series, fantasy drama Shadow and Bone, was the most watched title of 2023’s first six months to get the axe,...

Netflix has released another huge batch of data about the time users spent with the service, and the top of its series list demonstrates how wide its global reach is.
The No. 1 series for the second half of 2023, as measured by Netflix’s view metric (total viewing hours divided by running time), was One Piece, a U.S.-Japanese co-production based on the enduringly popular manga and anime series. It amassed 71.6 million views following its Aug. 31 premiere. Four of the next five shows — German miniseries Dear Child, the third installment of Lupin from France, and British shows Who Is Erin Carter? and Sex Education season four — originated outside the United States, and the sixth, The Witcher, is based on novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski and films in Europe.

As Netflix pointed out previously, the initiative aims to document the the full picture instead of the existing glimpses of only the top-performing programming.
According to the report, audiences watched 90B hours of Netflix content from July to December 2023, which is on par with the first half of the year.
The top-ranking title in the latest report appears to be the apocalyptic film Leave the World Behind with 121M views.

Dystopian thriller “Leave the World Behind” was the most-watched film — and title overall — on Netflix globally in the second half of 2023, while anime-inspired live action series “One Piece” led on the TV side among individual series seasons.
The data comes from Netflix’s second edition of “What We Watched: A Netflix Engagement Report,” reflecting viewership on the streamer from July-December 2023 covering 99% of all viewing on Netflix. Subscribers across the world watched about 90 billion hours of Netflix in the second half of 2023, compared with 93 billion hours in the first half of the year.
Netflix released its first big data dump, covering the first half of 2023, last December. In the second report, released Thursday, the company has added runtime and views (total hours viewed divided by runtime) and separated films and TV series, syncing it up with its weekly Top 10 and Most Popular lists.

As you’ve probably noticed yourselves, the audiences have been very kind to live-action and animated adaptations of video games and similar brands in recent years, as the studios have seemingly cracked the formula for making a good video game-based movie. Disney had a hit with Wreck-It-Ralph, the Lego franchise is now a classic, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie was a major hit, with last year’s Barbie (based on a major toy brand) being a global phenomenon. Knowing that fact, the video game adaptation market is growing, and we can confirm that the teased live-action movie based on The Sims franchise is moving forward.
It has been confirmed that Amazon MGM Studios have acquired the rights to the film and will actually provide part of the budget, so the movie has managed to land a major studio behind it, and some big names are attached to the project as well,...

There is a subgenre that basks in the creaturely natures of girls and women. Forget the ethereal sisters of “The Virgin Suicides” for here are some hot messes. Found in the literature of Shirley Jackson, Angela Carter and Deborah Levy and in films by Josephine Decker and Luna Carmoon, this is a mode of characterisation that delights in stripping away the illusion of a “fairer sex” in order to marinate in the feminine grotesque.
Ariane Labed’s entry to this canon, her directorial feature debut “September Says,” is infused with her own history as a Greek New Wave actress. There are shades of her break-out role in Yorgos Lanthimos’ claustrophobic family drama “Dogtooth” and a callback to her animal impressions in Athina Rachel Tsangari’s sublime, underrated “Attenberg.” Otherwise, Labed follows the sketchy map laid out by Daisy Johnson’s source novel, “Sisters.”

Sex Education fans know that the complicated relationship between mother-son sex therapist duo Dr. Jean Milburn (Gillian Anderson) and Otis (Asa Butterfield) is at the heart of the YA dramedy. But we’re about to see a whole new side of Jean when Sex Education Season 4 premieres on Sept. 21, because she now has a newborn to care for, too: her daughter Joy, who was born toward the end of Season 3.
“Jean’s just had a new baby and her story in Season 4 is about her overall ambitions and career goals, and how these collide with the pressures of motherhood,” Sex Education executive producer and creator Laurie Nunn told Netflix. “Being a single parent to a very small child is exhausting, and Jean is being pulled in different directions.”

From one Mr. Bridgerton to another: Luke Newton opened up about how he took inspiration from former Bridgerton leading man, Jonathan Bailey, before taking on one of the main roles in the hit Netflix series’ third season.
Newton and Bailey joined co-stars Nicola Coughlan, Claudia Jessie, Simone Ashley, Ruth Gemmell, Adjoa Andoh and more of the the show’s cast and crew on the blue carpet in New York City on Monday to celebrate the world premiere of Bridgerton season three.
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter at the premiere, Newton — who portrays Colin Bridgerton, one of the main love interests this season — revealed that he began tuning into Bailey’s approach to Anthony Bridgerton last season.

Diversity and representation are vital in the entertainment industry. So when the Scottish actor Ncuti Gatwa was cast as the fifteenth Doctor in Russell T Davies’ fourteenth series, Doctor Who, it should have been a cause for celebration. Sadly, instead of being met with open arms, he has faced a barrage of racist and homophobic backlash from online trolls.
In case you missed it, Gatwa’s casting in Doctor Who signifies the first queer actor portraying the Time Lord. Regretfully, certain bold casting choices will inevitably give rise to hatemongers, as was the case with the Masters of the Air actor.

However, Jinkx Monsoon, who appears as the villainous Maestro in the fourteenth series of Doctor Who, recently responded defiantly to the negativity, elevating the conversation to an introspective high.

The Doctor Who press juggernaut materialized in New York last week, bringing with it leading stars Ncuti Gatwa and Millie Gibson. The iconic, long-running BBC science-fiction show about a time-and-space traveling alien debuts its latest season on streamer Disney+ on Friday.
Gatwa, who grew up in Scotland after leaving Rwanda as a child, is already known for playing Eric Effiong in Sex Education (Netflix) and as one of the many Kens in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie (2023). Lesser known internationally is Gibson, who turns 20 in June. In the U.K., the actor made a name for herself in the television soap opera, Coronation Street (which is even longer-running than Doctor Who).
The Hollywood Reporter caught up with the pair to discuss the opening two episodes of their first season (which release at 7 p.m. on the streamer). There’s no spoilers below, but do come back Saturday for the second part of this interview,...

Hulu today gave a first glimpse of the avidly awaited eight-part series Rivals, based on the celebrated novel by Dame Jilly Cooper and produced by Happy Prince, part of ITV Studios. The series is set to debut on Disney+ in other countries later this year.
Set against the backdrop of the drama, excess, and shocking antics of the power-grabbing social elite of 1980s England, Rivals delves headfirst into the ruthless world of independent television in 1986.
This first wave of images unveiled six iconic characters from the drama. Alex Hassell plays the dashing ex-Olympian, Member of Parliament, incorrigible rake, and dangerously charismatic Rupert Campbell-Black.
David Tennant features as Lord Tony Baddingham, controller of Corinium Television and Rupert’s single-mindedly ambitious and egotistical adversary. Aidan Turner is journalist and TV presenter Declan O’Hara, who becomes caught in the crossfire of the long-simmering feud between Rupert and Tony.

“How do I say this in a PG way?” asks Ncuti Gatwa, with a mischievous smile, ahead of the Los Angeles premiere of Doctor Who, which streams on Disney+ on May 10. Gatwa, who assumes command of the time and space-traveling Tardis as the Fifteenth Doctor, takes a pause before thoughtfully conveying his distinctive approach to expressive, headline-making style to The Hollywood Reporter.
“I’m someone that very much wears my heart on my sleeve. My emotions are very clear for everyone to see, so I like pieces that have a mixture of strength and vulnerability,” says Gatwa, who stole scenes as a Ken in Barbie, as well as on the film’s London premiere red carpet stunting in custom Valentino silver sequin short-shorts, a billowing cut-out cape and jaunty cowboy hat. “I always like something a little sexy, sensual.”

No television franchise sees changes like Doctor Who, but high turnover can be overrated when you’ve built a world as rich as this one. Our first glimpse of Series 14 and the Fifteenth Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) came at the end of the Christmas specials in 2023. Gatwa came out the gate blazing and established himself as a fun-loving doctor, breaking the mold in terms of performance and style for the iconic character. Of course, Gatwa has already broken barriers as the first black and openly queer Doctor. On top of his groundbreaking aspects, the pure energy and charisma Gatwa’s brought to the role already makes it feel like we’ve hit the jackpot.
Doctor Who Series 14 Plot
The new Doctor begins noticing strange accidents throughout London. As he investigates, he meets a young woman – Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson). Abandoned at a Church as a baby, Ruby wants to know about her birth parents.

Asexuality is rare enough on screen that a film that does acknowledge its existence can build an entire storyline out of it. But the scant few depictions of it in popular media that do exist — mostly in progressive teen shows like Netflix’s “Sex Education” or “Heartbreak High” — generally present storylines about the orientation in an instructive manner for general audiences. Their supporting asexual characters are typically young, confused teens, and their journeys to understand and accept their orientation are highlighted by arcs that pit them with love interests who struggle with the unconventional shape their relationship takes.
“Slow,” the second feature from Lithuanian director Marija Kavtaradzė, offers a somewhat different type of asexual character. Dovydas (Kęstutis Cicėnas) certainly talks about his difficulties coming to terms with his asexuality as a child, but when the audience first meets him he’s decidedly not an awkward teenager. Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa and W1A’s Hugh Skinner will star in a National Theatre revival of Oscar Wilde’s play about courtships, betrothals, and confused identities. The Importance of Being Earnest also stars three-time Olivier Award winner Sharon D. Clarke playing the imperious Lady Bracknell.
Director Max Webster, making his Nt debut, told Deadline exclusively that casting Gatwa and Skinner as the idle bachelors Algernon Moncrieff and Jack Worthing -both leading double lives – who pursue two young women, both determined to marry someone called Ernest, and with Clarke as the dreadnaught dowager decreeing her own rules of class, taste, and propriety, was “a dream come true.”
