Some of his action films have fallen into the climate survival subgenre, including both Greenland and Geostorm, the former of which has a sequel, Greenland: Migration, scheduled for this year.

One of Butler's biggest action franchises as a leading star is the Den of Thieves movies. Most recently, the franchise saw the release of its second installment, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The movie grossed $56.7 million worldwide, making it the no. 5 highest-grossing movie of the year so far. Pantera received decent reviews, which was positive enough to warrant the development of a third film.

Jason Statham’s upcoming film Mutiny has now been given a release date, according to Deadline. Lionsgate has given the new action thriller an opening on January 9, 2026. That weekend is currently not sporting competition from any other films, but it will be following up the opening week of Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, which could be its only formidable challenge at the box office after the popularity of the original M3GAN.

Lionsgate, MadRiver, and Punch Palace are teaming up to release the film in theaters. Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning last September in the UK. Jason Statham, whose action output appears to be increasing over time, is currently shooting an untitled thriller somewhere in the UK or Ireland as these words are being typed. Meanwhile, an action thriller he shot in the autumn of 2024, Mutiny, now has a US release date – 9th January 2026.

Mutiny is the work of French director Jean-François Richet, who previously brought us the robust Gerard Butler thriller, Plane, which happens to include one of the most unfortunately-named fictional airline companies in film history.

According to Deadline, Statham will star as one Cole Reed, a private security specialist who’s framed for the murder of his billionaire boss. It sort of sounds a bit like 1993’s The Fugitive, though we suspect Statham’s Cole will break more jaws and ribs than Harrison Ford did as Richard Kimble.

Jason Statham has begun filming his next action movie. The untitled action-thriller has also unveiled its full cast, which includes two Star Wars alums and the actor behind one of the best Pirates of the Caribbean villains.

According to Deadline, Black Bear has commenced production on Statham's next action movie in the UK and Ireland with Ric Roman Waugh in the director's chair. Waugh is perhaps best known for directing a trio of action movies starring Gerard Butler — Angel Has Fallen (2019), Greenland (2020), and Kandahar (2023). He also recently wrapped filming on the sequel, Greenland: Migration, which is expected to be released in 2025. Baltasar Kormakur was previously attached to direct but had to exit for undisclosed reasons.

Last May, we heard about one of a several forthcoming projects from action specialist, Jason Statham. It didn’t have a title, but it did have a premise: Statham, roaming about on a Scottish island under the assumed name of Mason, and rescuing a little girl in the middle of a raging storm.

Filming was set to begin in November 2024, with the attached director being Baltasar Kormakur, perhaps best known for his somewhat tame survival movie, Everest.

It is expected that Gerard Butler will return to star and produce through his G-base banner, alongside partner Alan Siegel, and Lionsgate is in talks with franchise writer-director Christian Gudegast to return to write and direct. It is also expected that O’Shea Jackson Jr. will co-star in the third installment.

Earlier this month, Jackson Jr. told Variety he was hoping for more “Den of Thieves” in the near future. “I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: I’m trying to Vin Diesel this thing. To quote Ryan Reynolds, I want to work with Gerard until he’s 90,” he said.

The Scottish actor started his career during the mid-1990s with a small role in the James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies. In a post on the social media platform X, Snyder shared a selfie he took with Butler. The post was captioned, "Lunch with Leonidas. Excited for Den of Thieves 2 on January 10th." Snyder and Butler's reunion comes 17 years after 300 was released in theaters. The book is illustrated by Kate Hindley and published by Macmillan.

Although institutional slate financing had been a regular practice among U.S. studios (Raybaud himself helped arrange several deals during his time on the film arm of investment bank Société Générale in London), it just wasn’t being done on the continent.
