One of Gerard Butler’s most controversial romantic comedies has returned to streaming charts more than 15 years after its release. Butler stars alongside Grey’s Anatomy veteran Katherine Heigl in The Ugly Truth, the 2009 rom-com that grossed over $200 million at the box office against a modest $38 million budget. The Ugly Truth is streaming exclusively on Peacock, where it is the sixth most popular movie on the platform at the time of writing. The film was panned by critics upon release and earned a 14% score on Rotten Tomatoes, but general audiences were kinder to The Ugly Truth, giving it a 60%. The rom-com follows a television producer who takes control of a morning show segment on modern relationships that’s hosted by a misogynistic man.

Action icon Jason Statham continues to fly the flag for crowd-pleasing action movie fare, with the actor and martial artist now joining forces with the perfect director for another tale of a man with a mysterious past who is forced to fight for justice. The action thriller project does not yet have a title, but is now shooting in Enniskerry, Ireland, and will see The Stath working under the direction of Ric Roman Waugh, who is best known for helming the Gerard Butler-led Angel Has Fallen and Greenland.
Enniskerry hosted the Disney sequel Disenchanted back in 2022, but rather than the music and whimsy of that fantastical comedy, Jason Statham will instead tear through the picturesque village as a man who, after saving a girl from drowning, finds himself the target of a local gang. Enniskerry will stand-in for Scotland in the movie, with a shot of Statham posing with...

Gear up, Gerard Butler fans — Netflix has a treat for you this week! Butler's latest action-packed thriller, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, is officially heading to Netflix on Thursday, March 20, 2025. The film made its theatrical release in January 2025. However, those who missed the initial release now have the chance to revel in the intense action that the film brings from the comfort of their own homes.
The long-awaited sequel to 2018's Den of Thieves, the film brings back Gerard Butler in his role of "Big Nick" O'Brien. Once again, the character is on the hunt for an elite group of criminals. However, unlike the first film, Den of Thieves 2 sees Nick and Donnie form an unlikely partnership as the action goes global. Whereas Donnie's focus was on a Federal Reserve branch in the first film, the sequel sees Donnie move his focus to the World Diamond Center, a highly secure facility in Nice,...

Though his work is wide-ranging, a huge part of Gerard Butler's career has revolved around action films. After appearing in a period piece for his debut film, he played a supporting role in the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies in 1997. Since then, he has been in multiple other action movies, including Olympus Has Fallen and Kandahar. Some of his action films have fallen into the climate survival subgenre, including both Greenland and Geostorm, the former of which has a sequel, Greenland: Migration, scheduled for this year.
One of Butler's biggest action franchises as a leading star is the Den of Thieves movies. Most recently, the franchise saw the release of its second installment, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera. The movie grossed $56.7 million worldwide, making it the no. 5 highest-grossing movie of the year so far. Pantera received decent reviews, which was positive enough to warrant the development of a third film.

Jason Statham’s upcoming film Mutiny has now been given a release date, according to Deadline. Lionsgate has given the new action thriller an opening on January 9, 2026. That weekend is currently not sporting competition from any other films, but it will be following up the opening week of Universal’s M3GAN spin-off Soulm8te, which could be its only formidable challenge at the box office after the popularity of the original M3GAN.
Lionsgate, MadRiver, and Punch Palace are teaming up to release the film in theaters. Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis wrote the screenplay for Mutiny, with principal photography beginning last September in the UK. Statham produces through his newly-founded Punch Palace Productions, with Marc Butan via his MadRiver Pictures studio.

Another Jason Statham action thriller, Mutiny – this one from the director of Plane – has its US release set for January 2026.
Jason Statham, whose action output appears to be increasing over time, is currently shooting an untitled thriller somewhere in the UK or Ireland as these words are being typed. Meanwhile, an action thriller he shot in the autumn of 2024, Mutiny, now has a US release date – 9th January 2026.
Mutiny is the work of French director Jean-François Richet, who previously brought us the robust Gerard Butler thriller, Plane, which happens to include one of the most unfortunately-named fictional airline companies in film history.
According to Deadline, Statham will star as one Cole Reed, a private security specialist who’s framed for the murder of his billionaire boss. It sort of sounds a bit like 1993’s The Fugitive, though we suspect Statham’s Cole will break more jaws and ribs than Harrison Ford did as Richard Kimble.

Greenland director Ric Roman Waugh is now directing a new, untitled Jason Statham action thriller, with filming underway in the UK and Ireland.
Last May, we heard about one of a several forthcoming projects from action specialist, Jason Statham. It didn’t have a title, but it did have a premise: Statham, roaming about on a Scottish island under the assumed name of Mason, and rescuing a little girl in the middle of a raging storm.
Filming was set to begin in November 2024, with the attached director being Baltasar Kormakur, perhaps best known for his somewhat tame survival movie, Everest.

Lionsgate, Tucker Tooley Entertainment and G-base are moving a third film in the “Den of Thieves” franchise into active development.
“Den of Thieves 2: Pantera” opened in the No. 1 spot at the North American box office and has grossed more than $32 million at the domestic box office to date. The film launched on PVOD on Tuesday.
It is expected that Gerard Butler will return to star and produce through his G-base banner, alongside partner Alan Siegel, and Lionsgate is in talks with franchise writer-director Christian Gudegast to return to write and direct. It is also expected that O’Shea Jackson Jr. will co-star in the third installment.
Earlier this month, Jackson Jr. told Variety he was hoping for more “Den of Thieves” in the near future. “I’m not gonna sugarcoat it: I’m trying to Vin Diesel this thing. To quote Ryan Reynolds, I want to work with Gerard until he’s 90,” he said.

Why do we like Gerard Butler? As of the publishing of this piece, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is performing as expected, looking to become yet another reliable, mid-budgeted programmer hit for the movie star. It’ll round out nicely in theaters, then do well with VOD and home sales. This kind of success is exceedingly rare these days; even Liam Neeson actioners underperform after years of semi-reliability. So: what is it about Butler?

Gerard Butler is poised to have a huge 2025, and Den of Thieves 2 gives him a strong start at the box office. The actor has a solid track record of being in movies that do well at the box office across a variety of genres. However, action movies and franchises have been the most consistent performers for him throughout his career. That includes his successes with the animated How To Train Your Dragon trilogy and his Has Fallen trilogy of action films. 2018's Den of Thieves proved once more that he's a bankable action lead as it made $80 million worldwide.
It's somewhat expected that new Gerard Butler action movies will do well at the box office. In the last few years, he's continued to find success with his Has Fallen and How To Train Your Dragon films. He's also launched new properties like Greenland and Plane and seen them each do solid business.

Although he has occasionally dabbled in the romantic comedy and family drama genres, Gerard Butler is most closely associated with the many action films that he has appeared in. Given Butler’s impressive physique, undeniable charisma, and ability to transform into morally ambiguous characters, it is no surprise that he has often been drawn to action cinema. While there are some action stars like Dwayne Johnson or Vin Diesel who refuse to take chances, Butler has ensured that there is a diversity to the action films that he appears in; between a gritty heist thriller like Den of Thieves, a comic book epic like 300, and a thrilling disaster film like Greenland, he has managed to make each of his performances unique. Butler gave one of his most underrated performances as a real vigilante in the biographical revenge thriller Machine Gun Preacher, which became the subject of legitimate controversy based on the film’s inspiration.

Gerard Butler has long been a staple of the action genre, and it seems as if he's only leaned harder into this area of his career over the last decade or so. After becoming a big name due to movies like Reign of Fire (2002) and 300 (2006), Butler appeared in a handful of exciting action flicks, including RocknRolla (2008), Gamer (2009), and Machine Gun Preacher (2011). It was in 2013, however, that Butler's action hero persona really evolved.
In 2013, Butler starred in Olympus Has Fallen, which could be seen as the start of a new phase of his career. In addition to starring in two sequels to this White House action movie, including London Has Fallen (2016) and Angel Has Fallen (2019), Butler appeared in a mix of action-forward movies that varied quite significantly in quality, including Geostorm (2017), Hunter Killer (2018), Greenland (2020), Copshop (2021), and Plane (2023). There was one 2018 title, however, that really struck a chord with audiences.

Gerard Butleris no stranger to action movies. Though his first movie was a period piece, playing Archie Brown in Mrs. Brown (1997), his career has often included high-octane genre movies. After performing in Mrs. Brown, he went on to play a supporting role in the Pierce Brosnan Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies, making his first foray into the action genre. Butler then revisited genre movies the next year with his adventure fantasy Tale of the Mummy, which was released in 1998. He would return to them time again throughout his career.
Fast-forward over 20 years, and Butler is still regularly involved in action movies. These range from disaster movies, including Geostorm (2017) and Greenland (2020), to the action thrillers Kandahar (2023) and Last Seen Alive (2022). Though he has been in many one-off movies, Butler has also made his way into franchises. This includes the DreamWorks animated franchise How to Train Your Dragon and the Has Fallen series.

As a movie star, Gerard Butler owns January the way Will Smith once owned Memorial Day and the “Meg” films own August. That Butler’s B-movie thrillers now hold sway over the frozen, box-office-lite oblivion of the early weeks of the year may seem a Pyrrhic victory, but at least he’s the king of something. And Butler’s brusque, beady-eyed, scowling-hulk charisma has aged well. A quick-fire actor in a caveman’s body, he has the ability to lift a piece of pulp so it almost seems like a real movie.
For much of its two-hour-and-24-minute running time, “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera,” the sequel to Butler‘s cops-vs.-crooks heist thriller from 2018, does a satisfying impersonation of a high-end crime film. If you want to know what makes Butler a commanding genre bruiser, look no further than the way he smokes on camera, dragging on a cigarette...

A Gerard Butler franchise has received an encouraging update from its director ahead of the second movie's release on January 10. The Scottish actor started his career during the mid-1990s with a small role in the James Bond movie, Tomorrow Never Dies. During the early 2000s, Butler continued to star in franchise films, playing the eponymous role in Dracula 2000 and appearing in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life in 2003.
After elevating his status with a lead role in Zack Snyder's 300, Butler went on to star in several more franchises, including lending his voice to the animated How to Train Your Dragon franchise. During the 2010s, Butler starred in the Has Fallen franchise, comprised of Olympus Has Fallen, London Has Fallen, and Angel Has Fallen. Butler's streak of action franchises has continued with Den of Thieves and Greenland, which will both be receiving sequels in early 2025.

Gerard Butler’s 2018 action-thriller Hunter Killer has arrived on Tubi, giving the forgotten movie a second chance to find an audience. While the movie has recently had a stint on Netflix, there is nothing like free content that doesn’t require a paid subscription, and that has proved to be a big draw for action movie fans. While Butler is usually seen running around on land, this time around he is taking a deep-dive into the world of geopolitical espionage and submarine warfare.
Hunter Killer sees Butler playing Captain Joe Glass, a submarine commander who is tested to the limit when he is thrown into a battle to prevent the outbreak of World War III – well, isn’t that always the goal? After uncovering a coup within the Russian government, Glass must strategically play the game to navigate political and military tensions, take down the bad guys, and – there’s...

Action enthusiasts will have a hard time watching the Has Fallen trilogy on Hulu. Only the first entry in the Gerard Butler-led film series will hit the streaming platform at the end of November.
Beginning Nov. 29, Olympus Has Fallen will become available to stream on Hulu. Unfortunately, its sequels, 2016's London Has Fallen and 2019's Angel Has Fallen, will not be joining the 2013 movie on the streaming platform which will no doubt frustrate fans of the franchise who subscribe to Hulu. Olympus Has Fallen introduces audiences to Butler's Mike Banning, a former Army Ranger and current Secret Service agent who finds himself in the midst of a national crisis. When North Korean terrorists seize the White House, Banning must use his skills and insider knowledge to rescue the President and reclaim the nation's symbol of power.

Star-studded animated holiday feature “The Night Before Christmas in Wonderland” has set a streaming release date in the U.S. and U.K.
The musical movie, which features the voices of Emilia Clarke (“Game of Thrones”), Gerard Butler (“Greenland”) and Simone Ashley (“Bridgerton”), is based on Carys Bexington’s bestselling book, which mashes up Lewis Carroll’s “Alice in Wonderland” and Clement Clarke Moore’s poem “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas” (also known as “A Visit from St Nicholas”). The book is illustrated by Kate Hindley and published by Macmillan.
Peter Baynton, who directed the Oscar- and BAFTA-winning animated short “The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse,” helms the feature, which has been adapted by Sara Daddy (writing entirely in rhyming couplets) and features original music and songs from long-time Robbie Williams collaborator Guy Chambers and Grammy winner Amy Wadge.

A reboot of Sylvester Stallone’s action classic “Cliffhanger” is currently in production, but the film will look a lot different from the package initially announced nearly 18 months ago.
Stallone will no longer star in the update meant to be directed by Ric Roman Waugh (“Greenland”) from a script by Mark Bianculli (“Hunters”). A creative overhaul has meant that actor Lily James will take on the lead role. Pierce Brosnan will co-star and Jaume Collet-Serra will direct. The project hails from Rocket Science in partnership with Thank You Pictures and Supernix.
Filming is underway in Austria with a buzzy supporting cast, including: Nell Tiger Free, festival darling Franz Rogowski (“Passages”), Shubham Saraf (“Shantaram”), Assaad Bouab (“Franklin”), Suzy Bemba (“Poor Things”) and Bruno Gouery, a breakout star of the Netflix hit “Emily in Paris.”

Warning: Spoilers ahead for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2, episode 2!The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon showrunner David Zabel has explained Carol's odd detour in season 2, episode 2, revealing where the idea came from and why. During Daryl Dixon season 2, episode 2, Carol (Melissa McBride) and Ash (Manish Dayal) land in Greenland on their way to France, doing so to repair the plane after a fuel line started leaking. While there, they meet survivors Eun (Minami Bages) and Hanna (Maria Erwolter), who try to kill Carol and get Ash to impregnate them. Both newcomers end up dead, with Hanna killing Eun and Ash killing her before their departure.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Zabel explained he came up with the idea for Carol and Ash's Greenland detour in Daryl Dixon, wanting to have the plane stop somewhere to make the journey to France more realistic. This resulted in brainstorming zombies hiding in marshlands,...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon - The Book of Carol episode 2.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2, episode 2 just introduced a great horror concept, and I'd love to see a full-length version. With the spinoff show predominantly taking place in France, Carol's introduction helped shake things up and add a fresh new dynamic to the show. Having started in America, Carol's journey to France in Daryl Dixon season 2 has already taken a few twists and turns so far, including an unexpected visit to Greenland. After Ash agreed to fly her to France, the two had to stop in Greenland for fuel, leading to an eventful pit stop.
While such a remote country may not seem like the most dramatic setting, it was the perfect location to introduce some horror elements. The Walking Dead may be full of dangerous characters and gory kills, but...

The spinoff's first season revealed how Daryl Dixon got to France, allowing the franchise to expand the zombie universe. Although other locations had been teased briefly in numerous projects, Daryl Dixon finally confirmed that Europe had been devastated just as badly as America by the zombie virus, with the series showing how France had adapted to the new world and what factions formed as a result.

The following contains spoilers for The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2, Episode 2, "Moulin Rouge," which debuted Sunday, Oct. 6 on AMC.
There's a word in French that doesn't have an exact English translation, but essentially describes a change of scenery: "dpaysant." Isabelle embodies this word in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon Season 2, Episode 2, when everything she worked for during the outbreak crashes and burns. "Dpaysant" is the silver lining in a now hopeless situation for Daryl Dixon and Isabelle, but it also could be the reason half of Daryl Dixon's viewers tap out of the series.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon only attracts two types of viewers: Dedicated Walking Dead fans who want a new environment and fresh take on the zombie apocalypse in this world, or advocates of a potential romance between Daryl and Carol Peletier. Some fans may fall into both categories, but the distinction is still valid. Some...

Greenland, the 2020 apocalyptic thriller featuring Deadpool star Morena Baccarin, has rocketed into Max's Top 10, capturing the attention of audiences worldwide. The film, which also stars Gerard Butler, is experiencing a resurgence in popularity, showcasing Baccarins versatility beyond her role as Vanessa in the Deadpool franchise. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, Greenland tells the harrowing story of John Garrity (Butler) and his estranged wife Allison (Baccarin) as they struggle to protect their son amidst a catastrophic comet strike that threatens to annihilate humanity. Unlike typical disaster movies that focus heavily on CGI destruction, Greenland offers a more grounded narrative, emphasizing the emotional stakes and the human aspect of survival in the face of global disaster.

Geostorm was a critical and commercial bomb, losing $71.6 million, with 60% of the film re-written and re-shot. Director Dean Devlin has expressed interest in a sequel or director's cut, despite being replaced during production. Gerard Butler's recent success in disaster movies, like Greenland and its upcoming sequel, and the recent box office success of Twisters could further redeem the genre after Geostorm's failure.

When Sébastien Raybaud founded Anton in 2011 (as Anton Capital Entertainment), his first major deal proved to be groundbreaking for the European film industry.
Although institutional slate financing had been a regular practice among U.S. studios (Raybaud himself helped arrange several deals during his time on the film arm of investment bank Société Générale in London), it just wasn’t being done on the continent.
“There was a disconnect,” he says, pointing to the money that was available in the U.S. compared to Europe. So Anton was originally set up to “marry big investors with the industry.” It did just that with a €150 million (($160 million) three-year slate-financing deal with StudioCanal using U.S. fund Falcon, with the cash injection helping bankroll both the hugely successful “Paddington” and “Shaun the Sheep” franchises, kickstarting a period of significant growth for the Vivendi-owned studio.

Gerard Butler’s Leonidas led an army of 300 soldiers to face off against the 300,000 soldiers of the Persian God-King Xerxes in Zack Snyder’s 300. The David and Goliath story required actors to get ripped and look perfect in their half-naked attires. However, Warner Bros. exec Alan Horn wasn’t exactly convinced with Butler for the role after working with him on The Phantom of the Opera.

However, when Butler came to convince him, Horn decided to give him the role as per Snyder’s wish upon one condition. He knew from their earlier collaboration that Butler was a heavy smoker and he wanted the actor to quit smoking to land the part.

Dick Van Dyke Won For Outstanding Guest Performance On ‘Days of Our Lives’ Spoilers
The show started by awarding the Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Daytime Drama. Robert Gossard, who plays Marshall Ashford on General Hospital, won.
Gossard was genuine and humble, two things everyone wants to see in a winner. Next, Courtney Hope, who plays Sally Spectra on The Young and the Restless, won.
Hope dedicated her Emmy to all the mothers who lost a child. Her big storyline this year was that her character had a devastating miscarriage. Her performance was heartbreaking.
