Mediawan Rights, the sales arm of European media group Mediawan, is ramping up its documentary slate with the addition of two new feature films, Variety has learned.
Directed by Ado Hasanovic, “My Father’s Diaries” is an intimate portrait of the Bosnian War that uses 8mm footage shot by the director’s family, as well as his father’s written account of the period from the start of the war through the infamous “death march” that saw some 15,000 Bosniaks attempt to trek more than 60 miles to escape Serbian forces.
Produced by Italian powerhouse Palomar (“The Name of the Rose”), pic is the story of a son who grew up in the shadow of war and seeks answers to his trauma through the films and writings his father left behind. Acting as co-producer, Mediawan Rights is looking for presales to round out the financing.

Herbert L. Kloiber, Former Tele Munchen Group Exec, Launches Night Train Media for High-End TV, Film
Herbert L. Kloiber, former managing director of Tele München Group, has launched a new media venture focusing on European film and series projects.
Munich-based Night Train Media is looking to develop, co-produce, finance and distribute in-house and third-party projects.
Speaking to Variety, Kloiber said it was the ideal time to launch the company “in this current golden age of television.” He is also keen to work with German broadcasters like Ard, Zdf, ProSiebenSat.1 and Rtl.
“The broadcasters now all have non-linear streaming services (such as) Mediathek, Joyn and TV Now growing into that space and they are great partners for setting up shows between European broadcasters and then allowing my company still to participate on the international distribution side rather than giving all the rights to one player worldwide,” he said.

Palomar, the Italian TV and film production company behind “Inspector Montalbano” and “The Name of The Rose,” is launching a unit dedicated to documentaries to be headed by Andrea Romeo, founder and chief of Italy’s Biografilm Festival.
Palomar Doc, which will become operational in March, will be developing and producing docs and doc series by Italian and European directors for theatrical and platform distribution with a special focus on tapping into new opportunities offered by streamers, the company said in a statement.
Romeo will be at the European Film Market in Berlin scouting for projects.
While Italy is quite active in terms of its overall docs output, the country has plenty of room for improvement when it comes to churning out high-profile docs that can travel such as Agostino Ferrente’s “Selfie” or Beniamino Barrese’s “The Disappearance of my Mother,” which Kino Lorber recently released in the U.

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair’s Jean-Jacques Annaud is to direct a TV series about Alice Guy, the world’s first female filmmaker.
Annaud, who directed the Patrick Dempsey miniseries for Epix, has teamed up with Wild Bunch TV, the company behind John Turturro’s The Name of the Rose, 68productions and former ICM Chairman Jeff Berg to develop the series.
Based on Emmanuelle Gaume’s book Alice Guy, the series will feature an international cast, and will tell the story of Guy, who between 1896 and 1906 was thought to be the only female director in the world. Guy was an illegitimate, mixed race child, rejected by an abusive and violent father who kidnaps her from her mother, and raised between Chile, Switzerland and France. John Turturro will star as Carmine Falcone in Matt Reeves’ “The Batman,” the director announced on Twitter on Friday.
Carmine Falcone first appeared in “Batman Begins” played by English actor Tom Wilkinson. The character made its debut in the comic books in the four-part story “Batman: Year One,” written by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli in 1987. In the comics, Carmine Falcone is a powerful mafia boss nicknamed “The Roman.”
Robert Pattinson is set to star as the Dark Knight. Reeves took over the directing gig after Ben Affleck stepped away from the role. Affleck was also expected to play Batman again but then said he would be hanging up the cape for good. Reeves has since described the film as a “defining” and “very personal” story about the Dark Knight, rather than an origin story in the vein of Frank Miller’s beloved “Year One” series.

With political 'witch hunts' becoming all too common these days, take a look at director Giacomo Battiato's $27 million budgeted, 8-part TV miniseries "The Name of the Rose", from 11 Marzo, Palomar and Tele München Group (Tmg) in association with Rai Fiction:
"...'Franciscan' friar 'William of Baskerville' and 'Adso of Melk', a 'Benedictine' novice travelling under his protection, arrive at a Benedictine monastery in Northern Italy to attend a theological disputation.
"Upon arrival, the monastery is disturbed by a suicide. Then several other monks die under mysterious circumstances. William is tasked by the monastery's abbot to investigate the deaths, and fresh clues with each murder victim lead William to dead ends and new clues.

From glaciers in the Dolomites to the emerald Sardinian coastline, gritty industrial settings and roughly 54 Unesco World Heritage sites, the Italian peninsula offers pretty much any type of location you could imagine.
“Italy is a country where you can shoot everywhere,” says Stefania Ippoliti, president of the Italian Film Commissions umbrella group. “It’s not like in France, where it’s all about Paris and the Cote d’Azure.”
Plus, “everywhere you shoot, you find an efficient film commission, [which] “was not the case a few years ago.”
There are at least 18 film commissions now operating across Italy. Most of them offer incentives and local film funds that have grown to be worth a total of €60 million ($66 million) a year. Though on a merely monetary level Italian funds are not on a par with Germany or France, the basic advantage is that the country’s film commissions also double up as...

This summer there is lots of action on the Italian peninsula.
“No Time to Die, ” the latest James Bond film, is shooting amid cave dwellings in the ancient southern town of Matera, while Christopher Nolan’s latest, “Tenet,” is encamped in Ravello, a jewel overlooking the Amalfi coast. Terrence Malick is in Anzio, a central seaport, where cameras are rolling on his drama “The Last Planet,” which will reportedly depict passages in the life of Christ.
A little further north, on the grounds of Rome’s Cinecittà World theme park, Sky’s high-end Rome-origins skein “Romulus,” filming in archaic Latin, is in the midst of a 28-week shoot, while Luca Guadagnino’s HBO/Sky show “We Are Who We Are,” set on a U.S. Army base, is about to go into production in Padua.
“There is a production surge under way,” says “Romulus” producer Riccardo Tozzi, chief of ITV-owned Cattleya.

Lille, France — Series Mania’s Forum wrapped Wednesday, the festival proper on Saturday night. Here are 10 takeaways on events to date at the biggest edition ever:
1.Netflix: No In-house Production In France, But Beyond?
The role of the independent producer in an Over-the-Top platform world proved the No. 1 talking point of Series Mania.
Producers fears are double-fold: Not retaining any rights to what they produce: being totally sidelined by streaming giants’ producing talent directly. If Series Mania served to suggest one thing, it is that the jury is still out on how this issue will play out. Especially with more Ott players coming online, nothing seems written in stone. At one of the TV festivals key panels, Developing French Content for and with Netflix, asked whether Netflix would in-house produce in France. Damien Couvreur, director international originals France, said that Netflix was “doing it in the U.S., to...

Take a look at director Giacomo Battiato's $27 million budgeted, 8-part TV miniseries "The Name of the Rose", from 11 Marzo, Palomar and Tele München Group (Tmg) in association with Rai Fiction:
"...'Franciscan' friar 'William of Baskerville' and 'Adso of Melk', a 'Benedictine' novice travelling under his protection, arrive at a Benedictine monastery in Northern Italy to attend a theological disputation.
"Upon arrival, the monastery is disturbed by a suicide. Then several other monks die under mysterious circumstances. William is tasked by the monastery's abbot to investigate the deaths, and fresh clues with each murder victim lead William to dead ends and new clues.
"The protagonists explore a labyrinthine medieval library, discuss the subversive power of laughter, and come face to face with the 'Inquisition' a path that William had previously forsworn. William's innate curiosity and highly developed powers of logic and deduction provide the keys to unraveling the abbey's mysteries.
