Our Eic Chris Bumbray interviews Elijah Wood at the Fantasia Film Festival
The Fantasia Film Festival is in full swing in Montreal, and it kicked off in high gear with the world premiere of Bookworm. The movie – which we loved (read our review here) – stars the great Elijah Wood as an illusionist who is summoned to New Zealand to care for his estranged daughter after her mother winds up in a coma. Soon, the girl, Mildred (played by the terrific Nell Fisher), convinces her father to accompany her into the New Zealand wilderness to track down a mythical panther, only for the two to deal with danger at every turn.
Wood attended the film’s red carpet premiere and was kind enough to chat with us a bit. The interview will be up next week, but Wood did give us an intriguing answer when we asked if he’d be...

Combining a grounded police procedural with occult-tinged horror might not always work, but Osgood Perkins' "Longlegs" makes it work, and then some. The terror-inducing aura of Neon's latest offering sustains it from start to finish, with the restrained jump scares heightening the experience instead of cheapening it. The film languishes in the latent fear of the unknown, the dark, empty spaces that surround us at night, and the secrets that define our worldview since childhood. The titular figure, Longlegs (played by an unrecognizable Nicolas Cage), can be glimpsed from time to time — but these measured windows into evil are more than enough to rattle us, along with FBI junior agent Lee Harker (the brilliant Maika Monroe), who has no choice but to face such horrors head-on.
As astonishingly solid "Longlegs" is, it was a pleasant surprise that the film managed to pull in $22.6 million domestically in its opening weekend,...

It seems to happen like a clockwork. A new Nicolas Cage movie will arrive, and with it comes a question: "Is Nicolas Cage a good actor?" Cage has been working for decades now, but at some point, some folks got it in their heads that the off-kilter performer was bad at his job. To be fair, this could have something to do with the quality of the films he appears in. Cage once got himself in trouble with the IRS -- he made lavish purchases (including buying a dinosaur skull that turned out to be stolen), and according to CNBC, ended up owing the IRS "$6.3 million in property taxes."
To offset his financial woes, Cage began working -- a lot. He would seemingly take any job thrown his way, and as a result, he appeared in a lot of direct-to-video stinkers. Now, I'm not going to...

Let's face it, it's high time we came up with a new category of movies called Cageplotation – and gathered in this genre all the B-movies that revel in the unusual acting abilities of Nicolas Cage – a man who will soon become synonymous with the word "crazy" in cinema.
At the moment, everyone is eagerly awaiting the release of the horror film Longlegs, a project in which Nicolas Cage plays a cruel madman and supposedly the scariest movie of the decade, which has already managed to get a perfect 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and will drop in theaters on July 12th.
Will you watch? Longlegs?Yes, can't wait!100%No, I'm not interested.0%
While there is still some time left before the release of Longlegs, we suggest you prepare yourself with all the responsibility and watch a horror movie where Cage's acting madness is taken to the highest level.

It’s been a while since Young Sheldon aired its definite finale back in May, and fans have been sad about the show’s untimely ending ever since.
Now that there’s no way for The Big Bang Theory’s prequel to come back and only its spinoff titled Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage can make some things right, it seems like the fans’ prayers have been in fact heard since Young Sheldon’s storyline isn’t going anywhere — in a way.
Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage is still being developed, but some details and one of the creators’ recent revelations suggest that viewers may expect some of the beloved characters to return to the story.
Following Georgie and Mandy’s married life with its own ups and downs, the show will find its characters nearly a month after George Sr.’s passing and Sheldon’s departure for CalTech.

Maxwell Atom's animated series "The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy" debuted on the Cartoon Network on June 13, 2003, and would go on to run for 84 episodes over the course of six seasons. The premise was delightfully ghoulish. The cluelessly happy Billy (Richard Steven Horvitz) and the angry misanthrope Mandy (Grey DeLisle) once cheated Death by rigging a limbo competition; it seems that Death will grant favors to the living should they win at a competition à la Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal."
Because of Billy and Mandy's limbo victory, a grim reaper named Grim (Greg Eagles) becomes their indentured servant. Grim constantly wants to kill Billy and Mandy, while the kids just want to go on adventures. Grim begrudgingly goes along. Early Billy & Mandy segments were originally aired as part of the diptych series "Grim & Evil," which shared its 22-minute airtime with another Maxwell Atom series, "Evil Con Carne.

There's no greater fear than the unknown. Our heritage as beings evolved from organisms whose survival instinct was developed thousands of years ago means that we're all afraid of the literal and/or metaphorical dark, if for no better reason than we inherently know that danger can lie in wait within those unseen spaces. With knowledge comes logic, reason, and enlightenment, but there are still many questions about existence without answers, chief among them what else may exist beyond our corporeal forms. The conception of a God or Gods is a comforting one, but as logic follows, the existence of both good and evil in the world could mean that there is no God without a Devil.
It's that ambiguous, unresolved fear we all have about the nature of evil and its potential tangibility that writer/director Osgood Perkins has demonstrated an uncanny knack for tapping into. From his debut,...

Delia’s story is one of the most unimaginable horrors that one might come across. The TV adaptation of her story features Anna Maxwell Martin as Delia Balmer. Martin’s portrayal of Delia’s torment is incredible. Horror versions of fairy tales, such as Snow White: A Tale of Terror with Sigourney Weaver and Sam Neil, for example, have been around for quite a while. And now the current trend of turning kid’s stories and nursery rhymes into horror films has carried over to them. It makes sense, they’re filled with witches, ghosts and in their original versions tended to be pretty grim and bloody moments such as Cinderella’s stepsisters cutting off their toes to try and get their foot in the glass slipper. And that brings us to Cinderella’s Revenge.
It certainly opens on an appropriately nasty note as Katherine frames her husband for the theft of the king’s jewels and has him killed for the bounty.

It's easy to blame spin-offs for trying to cash in on popular franchises. The worst of them rely too much on what came before and offer nothing of their own. But the best of them find an unusual perspective, create new circumstances for familiar characters, or invent new characters for a familiar universe.
The writers of Young Sheldon deliberately avoided trying to replicate the style of their predecessor, instead offering a warm, nostalgic show about a child prodigy who is not always understood by those around him.
George Sr. Had Been Young Sheldon's Biggest Problem All Along
However, one fan complaint has lived with this undoubtedly outstanding series for all seven seasons – the personality of Sheldon's father, George Sr.
In the early seasons of The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon Cooper regularly mentioned the difficult trials that befell him in his childhood. There are also numerous references to Sheldon's father being a drinker.

3. Suspiria (1977)

In recent years, there has been a lot of discussion about actors who prefer to put themselves in the shoes of their characters and live their daily lives in preparation for the role. While some consider method acting to be an ingenious way to get a better feel for the character and their circumstances, others consider it an unnecessary farce.
Either way, the stories of such celebrities are usually at least entertaining to read. Sometimes, however, actors accidentally become devotees of the method when their personal lives begin to imitate the art they're making. This is exactly what happened to Young Sheldon's Montana Jordan, who just welcomed his first daughter.
How Old Is Montana Jordan?
Although the actor still looks extremely young, which Young Sheldon has always emphasized, the real-life version of events is much happier and less questionable than the one in the series.

In The Surfer, an exploitation film set to pressure-cook, a mild-mannered man is pitted against a group who even Andrew Tate might find a touch extreme. It’s set in South Australia on fictional Luna Bay, the kind of place where if the heat doesn’t get you, something else probably will. The water shines turquoise-blue but the beaches look like scorched earth. Into this furnace arrives an unnamed man (Nicolas Cage) hoping for nothing more than to view a cliffside property and catch a wave, but the locals have other ideas: “Don’t live here, don’t surf here,” one says, offering about as much hospitality as a switchblade.

Nicolas Cage soaked up the applause as his new trippy psychological thriller “The Surfer” scored a six-minute standing ovation at a Cannes Film Festival midnight screening on Friday night.
Cage appeared to be having a ball, beaming from ear to ear and waving across the room as cheers erupted around the Palais for the film, a wild, mind-bending adventure that sees the fan favorite hit the sort of deranged peaks not witnessed on screen since “Mandy.” At one point he took the mic to ask how to say “eat the rat” in French — a line from the film (and likely to become a meme) — roaring “mangez le rat!” to the delight of the crowd.
Cage also used the opportunity while on the mic and standing next to Thierry Fremaux to claim that, back in 2021, he’d phoned the Cannes director to ask if his drama “Pig” could premiere in at the festival.

Emily Osment recently weighed in on the show’s title, suggesting Georgie and Mandy might marry each other more than once.

Will Thursday’s Young Sheldon mark the last time we see the titular brainiac and his twin sister? Or is it just so-long for now?

A year removed from the start of the WGA strike, we’re just starting to see what recovery looks like. It’s rough: TIFF and AFM were disappointing, and Berlin didn’t offer many appealing talent packages. Projects are taking a long time to come together, if they’re happening at all.
However, Cannes may offer a silver lining: The post-strike market may mean a decline in the annual onslaught of trade announcements for movie projects that go nowhere.
“There’s still a lag in the marketplace where stuff isn’t filming; that’s going to affect what’s going on in production right now,” said one domestic sales agent. “During the WGA strike, a lot of talent had taken a seat and said, ‘What is it we really want from the marketplace? We want a different kind of quality.’ You hear it a lot from actors: ‘We want better movies.

The Nicolas Cage resurgence as of late has interestingly mostly found him in more abstract kinds of films as opposed to his more commercially appealing blockbusters of yesteryear. While many have pined for a National Treasure 3, Cage has been partaking in indie films like Pig, Mandy and Dream Scenario. However, he would also mix in a couple mass audience projects like The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent and Renfield. Deadline has now reported that Cage is set to star in The Carpenter’s Son, a horror tale that’s based on the rarely-told childhood of Jesus Christ.
The official synopsis for The Carpenter’s Son reads,
“The Carpenter’s Son tells the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as ‘the Boy’, is driven to doubt by another mysterious child and rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter, revealing inherent powers and a fate beyond his comprehension.

What will you ask the brilliant actor, author, cake decorator and star of new film A Family Affair?
Jane Asher has been on our screens for almost 73 years – her first role was aged five, in Mandy, and she turns 78 on 5 May. But it was aged 17 she really shot to big screen prominence, opposite Vincent Pryce in The Masque of the Red Death.
Then, two years later, in 1966, came Alfie, in which she plays a hitchhiker who becomes the latest in Michael Caine’s litany of conquests; in 1970 she was the lead in Jerzy Skolimowski’s suburban psychodrama Deep End.

It seems that the vampire genre is coming back in style! A once popular subgenre of horror and fantasy movies, the vampire genre became less popular after 2010 and not many filmmakers opted to make such movies anymore. But, it seems that we’re going to see a resurgence of vampire films in the near future. We have already reported on the upcoming vampire flick by Ryan Coogler, we’ve had several such movies recently, and there is another one coming up in 2025. Namely, Italian-Canadian filmmaker Panos Cosmatos is working on an original vampire thriller titled Flesh of the Gods, and it has been confirmed that the film will star Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac!
Panos Cosmatos is best known as the director of the action-horror Mandy (2018), which starred Elijah Wood. The filmmaker is now back after a 7-year break, as his Flesh of the Gods is scheduled to be released...

Flesh Of The Gods, a 1980s LA-set vampire thriller will be directed by Mandy director, Panos Cosmatos – and will star Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac.
Strap yourselves in. Twilight star Kristen Stewart is heading back to the world of vampires – and she’s set to be joined by no less than Oscar Isaac. The duo are uniting for what sounds like a deliciously strange project that stems from the mind of Panos Cosmatos, the celebrated director of Mandy.
The film will be “set in Los Angeles during the 1980s, and the story follows a married couple, Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart), who descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm of LA.”
Honestly, given the names involved here, we’d watch that film and not even miss the vampires. But it gets better. According to the synopsis over at The Hollywood Reporter, ‘when...

Kristen Stewart is returning to vampire movies with her next project, Flesh of the Gods, reports Variety.
Co-starring Oscar Isaac, the thriller comes from director Panos Cosmatos, whose ultraviolent Mandy was one of the best films released in 2018. The screenplay was written by Andrew Kevin Walker, best known for his work on Se7en and more recently, David Fincher’s The Killer. Adam McKay is among the producers.
Per the official logline, Flesh of the Gods follows the married couple Raoul (Isaac) and Alex (Stewart) who “descend each evening from their luxury skyscraper condo and head into an electric nighttime realm of ‘80s LA. When they cross paths with the mysterious and enigmatic woman known as Nameless and her hard-partying cabal, Raoul and Alex are seduced into a glamorous, surrealistic world of hedonism, thrills, and violence.”
In a statement, Cosmatos added that the film “inhabits the liminal realm between fantasy and nightmare.

The age of superhero movies is over. The time of the vampire has come. For anyone jonesing for Hollywood to put its muscle behind a new genre fixation these days that doesn't have to do with spandex and leather -- okay, so that definition also applies to vampire movies like the "Underworld" franchise, but just work with me here, people -- the last few years have put an intriguing contender into the mix. The last year alone has seen films like "The Last Voyage of the Demeter," "Renfield," the somewhat underrated "El Conde," and most recently "Abigail" all stake their claim (puns!) to ushering in a renaissance of sorts for everybody's favorite blood-sucking monsters, with high-profile projects like Robert Eggers' "Nosferatu" and the untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan vampire movie still on the way.

Six years have already gone by since the release of Mandy, which instantly became a cult favorite, and it looks like director Panos Cosmatos might finally be almost ready to go into production on another film. While it was announced in 2022 that he would be making a science fiction fantasy film called Nekrokosm for A24 and XYZ Films, that project remains in development. Moving ahead of it is the “hedonistic ’80s vampire thriller” Flesh of the Gods, which has Kristen Stewart (Love Lies Bleeding) and Oscar Isaac (Dune) attached to star.
Variety reports that WME Independent, CAA Media Finance, and XYZ Films will be presenting Flesh of the Gods to potential buyers at the Cannes Film Festival. Adam McKay and Betsy Koch of Hyperobject Industries are producing the film alongside Isaac, who is producing with Gena Konstantinakos through his company Mad Gene Media, which he set up with his wife Elvira Lind.

The wait for new Panos Cosmatos features requires patience. Some 13 years since the premiere of Beyond the Black Rainbow has only brought 2018’s Mandy and a 2022 episode of Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Though word’s been quiet on his A24-backed feature Nekrokosm, the next big push might be here: with a script by Andrew Kevin Walker and producing credit from Adam McKay, Cosmatos has enlisted Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac for vampire picture Flesh of the Gods.
