The long-in-development Tomb Raider series from Phoebe Waller-Bridge is facing trouble at Prime Video. In 2023, it was announced that Waller-Bridge, best known as the creator and star of the critically acclaimed series Fleabag, would be developing a new Tomb Raider series for Amazon's production arm. The project was officially greenlit in May 2024, and by November 2024, stars like Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Lucy Boynton (Sing Street), Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), and Emma Corin (Deadpool & Wolverine) were all in consideration for the lead role of Lara Croft before Turner was confirmed to have the part.
According to a report by Puck, however, the Tomb Raider streaming series has majorly struggled behind the scenes. The article states that Amazon's Prime Video has spent tens of millions of dollars developing the series and has nothing to show. The series has already gone through two writers' rooms and still does not have a finished script.

When J.J. Abrams' seminal supernatural survival series Lost celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, three things happened. Firstly, all 121 episodes of the show were dropped on Netflix, ready to confound and captivate a whole new generation. Secondly, a whole lot of folks (us included) were reminded why we still have to go back, even after all these years. And thirdly, we found ourselves desperately hoping Abrams would make his long overdue small screen comeback sooner rather than later. And that's exactly what he's doing with Duster, a 70s set action series in which J.J.'s Lost collaborator Josh Holloway — aka Sawyer — plays a getaway driver enlisted by the FBI's first Black female agent (Rachel Hilson) to help take down a Keith David led crime syndicate. Sounds pretty cool, right? Looks pretty cool, too. Check out the trailer below;

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, interwoven films and limited series spin tales of epic heroes built from dust, battles waged for love, and villainous origins that span decades, planets, and even the space-time continuum. Perhaps it’s this framework that has transformed the public ousting of star Jonathan Majors from a cautionary tale about abusive actors into the setting for a hero’s potential comeback story.
Majors, who was convicted in December 2023 of recklessly assaulting and harassing his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari, has spent the past month staging a steadfast attempt at career rehabilitation.

The fantasy genre has paved the way for multiple popular shows like Supernatural and Game of Thrones, which have become huge staples in pop culture. As iconic and bingeworthy as those series are, they feel flawed in certain areas, specifically with their endings. Meanwhile, there is an expansive library of hidden fantasy TV gems that don't get the recognition they deserve.
Whether overshadowed by competition, didn't have enough promotion or were unjustly canceled after one or two seasons, these fantasy shows have largely fallen under the radar. Nevertheless, dedicated fandoms have acknowledged these shows for the aesthetically pleasing and wildly creative narratives they are. From short-lived series like Lovecraft Country to action epics like Into the Badlands, these fantasy TV entries are entertaining with each passing episode.

Jonathan Majorsbecame best known for portraying Kang the Conqueror in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and his Emmy-nominated performance in Lovecraft Country before his blossoming career came to a halt after a 2023 conviction for misdemeanor assault and harassment against his ex-partner, Grace Jabbari. Majors, who pleaded not guilty to all charges and was acquitted on other counts, now faces an uphill battle for a comeback. In a recent cover story for The Hollywood Reporter, Majors and other industry insiders interviewed discuss that possibility. Majors has an upcoming project coming out later this month, Magazine Dreams, and its reception should indicate how feasible a comeback is for the actor.
Magazine Dreams centers on an amateur bodybuilder (portrayed by Majors) who dreams of making it big in professional weightlifting competitions. Directed by Elijah Bynum, it premiered at Sundance 2023 to critical acclaim, with much praise for Majors' performance. The film was set for release...

In December 2023, Jonathan Majors walked through a dense thicket of news cameras and climbed into the back of a black Chevy Suburban pulling away from the criminal courthouse in lower Manhattan. After a highly publicized trial, Majors had just learned that a jury convicted him of one count of misdemeanor third-degree assault and one count of second-degree harassment of his ex-girlfriend, British dancer Grace Jabbari. Inside the hushed car, a member of his legal team turned around from the front seat and delivered the next piece of news. “He goes, ‘I’m just gonna tell you now,’” Majors says. “That way you’re not surprised, and you can start processing it. They fired you. Marvel fired you.’”
Before his arrest that March, Majors was fresh off the Warner Bros. box office hit Creed III, the Marvel movie Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and an Emmy nomination for the HBO series Lovecraft Country.

Michael B. Jordan said in an interview with GQ magazine that he’s not concerned about the future of Marvel despite the franchise’s wobbly track record as of late. While the MCU hit a high last year with the record-breaking “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the year prior saw flops like “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “The Marvels” sink Marvel Studios to previously unforeseen lows. Jordan’s GQ cover was also published amid disappointing reviews for Marvel’s latest tentpole, “Captain America: Brave New World” (53% on Rotten Tomatoes from 133 reviews).
“[Marvel’s] doing great,” said Jordan, who is one of the MCU’s all-time great villains after playing Erik Killmonger in “Black Panther” and its sequel. “They’ll get it back.”

A brand new trailer for the upcoming vampire film "Sinners" has appeared online, promising the same incredible quality of work we've come to expect from "Creed" and "Black Panther" director Ryan Coogler and his frequent collaborator, Michael B. Jordan, but this time with what seems to be twice the bite. Set in the 1930s, Jordan stars as twin brothers Elias and Elijah Smoke, who return to their hometown with secrets they'd rather forget, only to be confronted by horrors they could have never anticipated. You know -- the toothy kind that can only lead to claret-covered carnage that will have the locals reaching for the nearest crucifix.
Admittedly, the fanged fiends -- led by Jack O'Connell in the chilling role of head vampire Remmick -- will require more than just a cross to be repelled. Their presence forces the Smoke brothers and the local townsfolk to unite in order to...

The Charlize Theron action film The Old Guard was a hit for the Netflix streaming service when it was released in 2020, but the sequel The Old Guard 2 has had an unexpectedly bumpy ride while making its way out into the world. It went into production back in 2022, and filming had to be halted briefly after a fire broke out at the film studio where the movie had been shooting; Rome, Italy’s historic Cinecittà Studios. Then there was a shake-up at Netflix during post-production, so the project got shut down for a while – and even though Theron was quoted as saying that it was back on track and coming soon last summer, it turns out that we’re going to have to keep waiting, because there are still reshoots to do. What’s on Netflix reported that The Old Guard 2 was supposed to undergo additional photography last October,...

Talk about a surprise. When Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor (who has been acting professionally since her debut as Ariel in 1995’s Broadway revival of “The Tempest” opposite Patrick Stewart) arrived on the Louisiana set of “Nickel Boys” (Amazon/MGM/Orion), her documentarian-turned-feature-director RaMell Ross told her to do something she had never done before: Look straight into the lens, without a reverse angle on her co-star. She couldn’t see her fellow actors because their faces were obscured by the camera, just as their faces were hidden from the audience.
Watching the lauded critical hit “Nickel Boys” requires an adjustment to a strict point-of-view aesthetic. But Taylor-Ellis had to make it work on the ground, on the fly. The tightly scheduled period feature (budgeted at $20 million) left little time to figure it out.

As much as Jurnee Smollett is an actor, she could also be considered an archivist — given how much of her 38-year career she’s spent capturing elements of untold history.
Smollett has been in front of the camera since she was 10 months old, but began acting in earnest when she was 5, appearing on sitcoms like “Full House” and “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper.” Since then, Smollett played Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Smallest Freedom Fighter” (8-year-old Sheyann Webb) in the 1999 TV movie “Selma, Lord Selma”; the sole female debater at a historically Black college in 1935 Texas in 2007’s “The Great Debaters”; a woman who escapes slavery in the 2016 series “Underground”; and a fiery Civil Rights activist fighting both societal and supernatural monsters in 2020’s “Lovecraft Country,” HBO’s acclaimed sci-fi drama for which Smollett earned her first Emmy nomination.

While Will Smith leads the King Richard cast in his Oscar-winning role, there is a terrific ensemble working together to bring this true sports story to the big screen. Venus and Serena Williams’ names are iconic in the world of sports, but King Richard offers a slight twist in that it’s actually more about their father, Richard Williams, a tennis coach who tries to put his daughters’ talents on the world stage. While he is a complex and intriguing character, King Richard benefits from the entire cast.
Directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green from a screenplay by Zach Baylin, King Richard goes behind the scenes of Venus and Serena’s life under the guidance of their father. King Richard has a sprawling cast of veteran actors and younger actors who get to flex their talents in front of a wider audience. The film is based on real-life people, and here...

The cast of season 1 included Michael Chiklis, Abigail Breslin, Rachel Bilson, Whitney Cummings, and Jason Ritter, while season 2 features Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, and Taylor Schilling, as well as Michael Chiklis in a new role.

Actor Lance Reddick, known for his roles in The Wire and the John Wick franchise, died last March at the age of 60 from heart disease. Reddick was a fantastic talent and we're all the poorer for not getting to see more performances from him.
The producers behind the Disney+ show Percy Jackson and the Olympians, based on author Rick Riordan's book series, were left in a difficult spot, since Reddick played the role of the Greek god Zeus, who starts the plot of the show into motion by accussing young Percy Jackson (Walker Scobell) of stealing his master lightning bolt. That storyline got resolved in the show's first season, which wrapped up early this year. But Zeus features in the later books, including The Sea of Monsters, which will form the basis of season 2.

Replacing the late great Lance Reddick in any of his ongoing shows is a Herculean task for any actor, but Disney might have found the person capable of doing it for Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Reddick played none other than Zeus, the King of the Greek Gods, in the show's debut season. The beloved actor passed away shortly after production wrapped on Season 1, aged 60. While some of his past roles in ongoing franchises, like Charon in John Wick, reached a natural conclusion, Zeus plays a major part in Rick Riordan's novels, and the show can't survive without the character.
Per Variety, Courtney B. Vance will take over from Lance Reddick as Zeus in Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. Vance is a two-time Emmy winning actor, best known for his roles in The Hunt for Red October, Hamburger Hill, Dangerous Minds, and American Crime Story.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians has found its new Zeus.
Emmy winner Courtney B. Vance has joined the Disney+ series as the king of the Greek gods. He’ll take over the role originated by the late Lance Reddick, who played the part in season one.
“I can’t tell you how excited I am to join the extraordinary cast of Percy Jackson and the Olympians,” Vance said in a statement. “There are few moments in an actor’s career when you can honestly say that you’re about to board a series that has such a devoted fan base filled with characters beloved around the world and is based on a wildly successful book series. I know that stepping into this role of Zeus will be a memorable experience and I’ll be giving my brother, Lance Reddick, who left us way too soon, a heavenly hug.”

“Finding someone to step into this role going forward was not an easy task, but when icon Courtney B. Vance answered the call, we knew the Gods were listening,” executive producer Dan Shotz wrote in a post on the Disney+ original’s Instagram page. “This legend of cinema not only wanted to honor the books, but wanted to honor Lance’s legacy. Zeus is the Greek god of the sky and the father of demigod Thalia Grace (recently announced cast member Tamara Smart). One of the greatest joys of having to live in an otherwise fairly tainted reality is getting to live at the same time as horror visionary and genre-definer Jordan Peele. And luckily for horror fans, the director of modern classics Get Out, Us, and Nope has been graciously lending his talents to other filmmakers of the genre through his production company, Monkeypaw. While having nothing to do with a humanistic AI with a beautiful voice that will make you fall in love with her, the upcoming Universal and Monkeypaw production Him formerly titled Goat directed by Justin Tipping, recently gave audiences a first-look at the production and, as expected, it seems like a promising film.
From the minds of writers Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie comes a tale of a promising young football player who is invited to train with a retiring star quarterback on an isolated compound. Known for Kicks,...

Previously titled Goat, the next feature from Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions is now titled Him, and Vanity Fair’s new behind-the-scenes image unveiled this morning offers new details on the sports horror movie.
Him is currently set to release in theaters on September 19, 2025.
Justin Tipping (Kicks) will direct the sports-themed psychological horror tale for Monkeypaw and Universal. Based on a pitch by Zack Akers and Skip Bronkie, the upcoming horror movie centers on a “promising young athlete who is invited to train with a team’s retiring star.” It’s described as “a blood-chilling journey into the inner sanctum of fame, power, and the pursuit of excellence at any cost.”
Marlon Wayans will star alongside Julia Fox, Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta”), Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, and Grammy nominee Tierra Whack.
The new image doesn’t reveal much in the way of plot or horror, but it does come with interesting insight.

There was a time, not all that long ago when the name HBO was synonymous with top-tier television.
Some of our readers might remember the iconic slogan from the cable giant’s heyday that summed up its unique approach to programming:
“It’s not; it’s HBO,” we were told. And as laughably pompous as that may sound in retrospect, at the time, it rang surprisingly true.
(Photograph by Macall Polay/HBO)
If one were to compose a comprehensive history of the past 25 years in American television, it would be difficult not to mention HBO on every other page.
When Sex and the City became an overnight cultural phenomenon in the summer of 1998, industry analysts likely regarded it as a fluke — a one-off instance in which a premium cable channel best known as a secondary market for theatrical movies stumbled onto success with an original series.

Marvel announced five years ago, at San Diego Comic-Con 2019, they were inviting Blade into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a new reboot. Five years later, well, Marvel’s planned Blade MCU movie has still yet to even find its way in front of the cameras.
It’s no secret that the brand new Blade movie has been bumped all over the release calendar the last few years, and it’s currently without a date at all after getting pulled from its theatrical release date of November 7, 2025. Not helping is that the movie is without a director at the moment, with Yann Demange (“Lovecraft Country”) departing the project in the wake of Bassam Tariq (Mogul Mowgli) exiting the film back in 2022.
Studio President Kevin Feige reassured fans this weekend at the D23 Brazil 2024 event that Marvel is still planning to reboot Blade with star Mahershala Ali and bring the character into the MCU.

Marvel Studios recently took Mahershala Ali’s long-delayed “Blade” movie off its release calendar, but studio president Kevin Feige is telling fans not to worry about whether or not the iconic vampire hunter will find his way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Blade is coming, he promises.
“We are committed to Blade,” Feige told Omelete (via IGN) during the D23 Brazil 2024 event. “We love the character. We love Mahershala’s take on him. And rest assured: whenever we change direction with a project, or are still figuring out how it fits into our schedule, we let the audience know. You’re all up to date on what’s happening. But I can tell you that the character will indeed make it to the MCU.”
Marvel originally announced its “Blade” movie with Ali in July 2019, but development has been rocky as several writers and directors have come and gone over the years.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe initiated its Blade movie way back in 2021, yet the movie doesnt seem any closer to release. Three years ago, the Marvel Cinematic Universe officially introduced Blade, hinting at the long-awaited revival of the iconic vampire hunter. Played by Mahershala Ali, Blade was positioned to bring a darker, supernatural element to the MCU, generating enormous excitement. However, despite this setup, Marvels Blade movie has been beset by several delays.
Though the McU's official Blade has been teased, Wesley Snipes' variant thrillingly joined the MCU timeline in Deadpool & Wolverine. Wesley Snipes reprised his role as the iconic vampire, celebrating his role in the original Blade trilogy. An especially pleasing line from Deadpool declared that theres only one Blade, a line that is increasingly reflecting the state of the character in the MCU.

We finally saw Blade appear in a Marvel Cinematic Universe film — it just wasn’t the Blade played by Mahershala Ali. The first appearance of Blade in the MCU came in “Deadpool & Wolverine” with Wesley Snipes reprising his iconic role.
And now Ali’s “Blade” has been delayed yet again, pulled from Disney’s 2025 release slate entirely. What a disaster.
Marvel chief Kevin Feige first announced a “Blade” reboot back in 2019 with Ali attached to star, and the character was even teased in the post-credits of 2021’s “Eternals,” a would-be franchise that now seems forgotten.
“Blade” has been through many starts and stops, with several writers and directors filtering through and with delays because of the writers strike and more. Through it all, the franchise’s original stars Wesley Snipes and Stephen Dorff haven’t refrained from talking about it.
“It’s not the actor’s fault,” Snipes said of Ali.

The Daywalker will have to wait a bit longer to have his time in the sun.
Disney has removed the Marvel reboot of “Blade” — starring Mahershala Ali as the titular half-vampire — from the release calendar. It was dated for Nov. 7, 2025. Disney will instead release “Predator: Badlands,” the sixth film in the otherworldly franchise, on the early November release date that was held by “Blade.”
Meanwhile, Marvel added three untitled projects to the schedule for Feb. 18, 2028, May 5, 2028 and Nov. 10, 2028.
The comic book empire’s decision to take “Blade” off the docket was widely expected after Disney CEO Bob Iger’s stated in an earnings call on May 7 that Marvel will release “a maximum of three” movies a year. Of the four superhero films Disney previously had slated for 2025 — including “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts” and “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” — “Blade” is the only project that hadn’t started production.

The story follows Liz Baxter (Ellis-Taylor), who works as a nanny for a prominent, white family in Oakland, California during the rise of the Black Panther Party in 1967. At first glance, a revival of the prank show “Scare Tactics” seems like an odd fit for Monkeypaw, the production company founded by Jordan Peele and behind such blockbuster hits like “Nope” and “Monkey Man.” But the more you dive into USA Network’s new project, the more the reality series makes sense for one of the more ambitious, meticulous and genre-bending companies in Hollywood.
Created by Scott Hallock and Kevin Healey, the original “Scare Tactics” premiered on Syfy in 2003. The series follows a simple premise: Each episode chronicles a group of “victims” who have been placed in a horrific situation made real by Hollywood magic and trained actors.
“You’re trying to make a horror movie for [the subjects], but for the audience, you’re trying to make a comedy,” Win Rosenfeld, president of Monkeypaw, told TheWrap for this week’s Office With a View. “We’re not trying to traumatize anyone for life.

“Magazine Dreams,” a tense sports drama starring Jonathan Majors, has been acquired by Briarcliff Entertainment and will be released theatrically in 2025. Searchlight Pictures had originally landed the movie at 2023’s Sundance Film Festival but parted ways earlier this year after Majors was convicted of domestic assault and harassment of his ex-girlfriend.
It will debut in theaters on a yet-to-be determined date during the first quarter of next year. Elijah Bynum wrote and directed “Magazine Dreams,” about an aspiring bodybuilder named Killian Maddox who abuses steroids in his quest to become a sports icon. After its Park City premiere, the film sparked a bidding war between Neon, Sony Pictures Classics and HBO before Searchlight landed domestic rights. After Searchlight dropped “Magazine Dreams,” the filmmakers were free to shop it to other distributors.

Exclusive: Magazine Dreams, the drama that came out of Sundance with Oscar buzz for Jonathan Majors’ intense portrayal of a troubled aspiring bodybuilder, will finally get its chance to flex on movie screens.
Briarcliff Entertainment has acquired domestic distribution rights to the critically acclaimed film, with plans to release in the first quarter of 2025. This becomes the second quality hot-potato picture taken on by Tom Ortenberg’s Briarcliff, after the distributor acquired the Donald Trump-Roy Cohn coming-of-age drama The Apprentice. Conglomerate-connected distributors shunned that film after its provocative Cannes debut, but Briarcliff will release it in the heat of election season October 11. That film shows the lessons an aspiring real estate magnate learned after being taken under the wing of the reptilian lawyer who was once the right-hand man for Sen. Joseph McCarthy in the sensationalized communist witch hunt.

You’ve seen the trailer. You’ve likely read the synopsis. And, if you’re anything like us, you… still don’t have a real clear understanding of what awaits in Ryan Murphy’s new horror series, Grotesquerie.
And while we can’t promise that our interviews with the show’s stars at the New York City premiere Monday will give you a good sense of exactly what’s going on in Murphy’s latest work, we can say that the videos below will give you decidedly disturbing (but in a fun way!) little snapshots of what to expect.
