CBS is preparing to build a large-scale television and film production facility outside Toronto, reflecting the high volume of shows that CBS Television Studios shoots north of the border.
CBS said Wednesday it has secured a long-term lease on a 260,000 square-foot space in Mississauga, which is 18 miles from downtown Toronto. The facility to be dubbed CBS Stages Canada will encompass six soundstages, production offices, support facilities and auxiliary services for large-scale television and film productions. It is expected to open by the middle of next year.
“CBS has a strong production history in Canada,” said David Stapf, president of CBS Television Studios. “The Toronto area specifically has provided our series with diverse and appealing locations as well as production infrastructure and crafts expertise that cannot be easily found. These new stages will provide valuable resources and additional capacity for our Company’s growing production slate.”

Mad Men alum Rich Sommer has been cast in a lead role opposite Perry Mattfeld on the new CW midseason drama series In the Dark, from CBS TV Studios and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films. He will play Dean, replacing Austin Nichols, who played the role in the pilot.
Written by Corinne Kingsbury and directed by Michael Showalter, In the Dark centers on Murphy (Mattfeld), a flawed and irreverent woman who just happens to be blind and is the only “witness” to the murder of her drug-dealing friend, Tyson. When the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at Breaking Blind — the guide-dog school owned by her overprotective parents.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: What’s the one new fall or midseason broadcast TV show announced at upfronts that you would like to survive?**

Between “Parks and Rec,” “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Good Place,” and “The Office”, Mike Schur is as creatively reliable a name as there is in the comedy business right now. “Abby’s” isn’t one of his creations (it’s from “New Girl” and “Superstore” vet Josh Malmuth), but as we’ve also seen with “Master of None,” Schur has excellent taste in what shows to put his stamp on, and both the premise (a young woman runs an unlicensed bar in her...

The new series that have sprouted up for the 2018-19 television season are taking notable steps to be more inclusive in not only its casting but also with key creative roles, but parity still hasn’t been hit yet.
Working with industry sources, Variety has identified 88 key roles in 34 scripted shows debuting on broadcast in fall 2018 and beyond. Among these roles across the five major networks are 42% women and 42% people of color. Breaking it down further, Variety has identified 18% women of color in these roles.
Looking at those behind-the-scenes in executive producer roles, 34% are women this year, while 10.7% are people of color (2.68% are women of color).
Of course, there will be personnel changes from pick-up to premiere that may alter these numbers slightly. CBS’ “The Code” and NBC’s “In Between” have already announced recasting for a key role each, while many series from first-time creators will surely be looking to attached a seasoned showrunner.

The 2018-2019 broadcast schedule is officially locked.
36 new shows have been ordered for next season (down slightly from 39 last year), with certain producers and their production banners locking down multiple projects across multiple networks. Greg Berlanti scored three new shows this year, the same number as Aaron Kaplan and Kapital Entertainment. Julie Plec, whose sole remaining CW series “The Originals” is poised to end this season, will stay on at the network with two new shows.
Here’s a look at which producers will be the busiest this coming season.
Aaron Kaplan (Kapital Entertainment) & Wendi Trilling (TrillTV)
Aaron Kaplan of Kapital Entertainment banner will have three new shows on the air next season: the ABC drama “A Million Little Things” and the CBS multi-cam comedies “The Neighborhood” and “Fam.”
“A Million Little Things” follows a group of friends whose lives are thrown into disarray when one of them commits suicide.

The CW wrapped the 2018 upfronts with its presentation on Thursday at New York City Center. Here are the five key takeaways:
1. Sunday nights aren’t just about Sunday nights.
The CW’s addition of a two-hour block of Sunday primetime programming, returning the network to a sixth night, had a significant impact on development and scheduling for 2018-19. The network picked up five new series, and as its president, Mark Pedowitz, said on Thursday during his upfront pitch, it will air more than 370 hours of original programming next season — with the number of ads increasing by roughly 20%, according to CW sales chief Scott Kunes.
The Sunday-night expansion received the go-ahead from the CW’s affiliates. But with CW once again emphasizing digital viewing (the network has for eight years sold its digital ads in the same package as linear) and the licensing deal between Netflix and the network’s corporate...

As usual, The CW batted last during upfront week, showing off its new slate Thursday morning at the New York City Center.
But network president Mark Pedowitz ended this week-long slog of presentations for ad buyers (and reporters) with the best present possible gift: An upfront that lasted under an hour. The CW is saying goodbye to three of its beloved series during the 2018-2019 season.
The network confirmed early Thursday that Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and iZombie are all returning for final seasons.

The CW is the final major broadcast network to unveil its fall 2018 schedule, and there are some big changes.
As previously reported the network will be programming Sunday nights, and the highly anticipated Charmed reboot has landed the 9/8c slot on the night.
It will lead out of Supergirl, which is moving from Monday nights. Charmed is probably The CW's only chance at bringing some viewers to the night.
Meanwhile, Mondays will consist of DC's Legends of Tomorrow and Arrow. Arrow is making a move from Thursdays to the night, and I'm not so sure it's going to be able to compete.
Tuesdays will stable, with The Flash and Black Lightning. Both shows performed decently together in early 2018, so it makes sense to keep them together.
Related: iZombie Renewed for Season 5 at The CW!
Riverdale will remain on Wednesdays at 8/7c and will be paired with the highly compatible All American.

How can anyone say no to this face! This is Levi, the Golden Retriever who plays co-lead Pretzel in the new CW series In the Dark, and this is one of my favorite stories this upfront.

The CW revealed a 2018-2019 TV schedule on Thursday with 12 hours of original scripted series — which The CW president Mark Pedowitz boasted was more than any other broadcast network except CBS.
“The more programming we have, the better off we are,” said The CW president Mark Pedowitz. “It includes our own cwtv.com, as well as the back end that the studios have on the Netflix arrangement. The affiliates were very much supportive of having another night of programming provided by the CW. It was combination of a multiple of things. Next season will be the last for three CW dramas: “Jane the Virgin,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” and “iZombie.” The network confirmed Thursday that all three shows will end following 2018-19 as it announced its fall schedule for the upcoming season.
“Jane the Virgin” and “iZombie” will end at five seasons and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” will end at four.
Speaking to reporters Thursday morning, CW president Mark Pedowitz said of the canceled series, “We will miss each of those shows in terms of what they’ve done. They’ve helped the perception of the CW across the board.”
The CW will expand into Sunday nights with a returning superhero series and a reboot of a signature supernatural drama from its predecessor’s past.
The new Sunday-night block will begin with “Supergirl,” one of five superhero dramas from Warner Bros. and Greg Berlanti on the fall schedule. In recent years, the network has spread its DC Entertainment series out,...

The CW is growing, expanding its limited 10 hours of weekly primetime real estate to 12 with the previously announced addition of Sunday nights.
That night will be home to some female-fronted fare with a move for Supergirl and the launch of the Charmed remake. Charmed is one of three new series to get the fall launchpad, as the network is saving its other two new orders (In the Dark and Roswell, New Mexico) for midseason.
An expansion to Sunday is significant for The CW and it certainly lessens the network's typically deep bench of series being held for midseason. Aside from the aforementioned ...

The CW is making a casting change on its newly picked up drama series In the Dark, from CBS TV Studios and Ben Stiller’s Red Hour Films. Austin Nichols, who co-starred in the pilot, is leaving; his role, Dean, will be recast.
Written by Corinne Kingsbury and directed by Michael Showalter, In the Dark centers on Murphy (Perry Mattfeld), a flawed and irreverent young woman who just happens to be blind and is the only “witness” to the murder of her drug-dealing friend, Tyson. When the police dismiss her story, she sets out with her dog, Pretzel, to find the killer while also managing her colorful dating life and the job she hates at Breaking Blind — the guide-dog school owned by her overprotective parents.
Dean is a salt-of-the-earth cop. He’s called in to investigate when Murphy claims she has discovered Tyson’s dead body in an alley. He...

Veteran TV writer-producer Jon Collier (Bones) has been tapped as executive producer/showrunner on the newly picked up CW drama series In the Dark, executive produced by Ben Stiller.
The project was written by Corinne Kingsbury who sold two pitches this season, comedy Fam to CBS and drama In the Dark to the CW, and saw both of them go to pilot and then to series. (Both hail from CBS TV Studios.) She is in first position on Fam, which stars Nina Dobrev, and will focus on that, with Collier stepping in to run In the Dark.

“iZombie” has been renewed for a fifth season at the CW.
Created by Rob Thomas, the network describes the series as the only “rom-com-zom-dram.” It stars Rose McIver as an undead medical examiner who is able to help the Seattle police department solve homicides by eating the brains of the deceased and seeing visions of the moments before their deaths. David Anders, Robert Buckley, Malcolm Goodwin, Rahul Kohli and Aly Michalka also star.
Thomas serves as executive producer alongside Diane Ruggiero-Wright, Danielle Stokdyk and Dan Etheridge. The show hails from Warner Bros. Television.
The series, which is currently airing its fourth season, is averaging a 0.25 rating in the 18-49 demo and 771,000 live viewers.
This comes on the heals of the CW’s midseason freshman drama “Life Sentence” getting canceled along with the military drama “Valor.”
