For over two decades, the trio known as Medeski Martin & Wood have pushed the boundaries of jazz fusion with their unique blend of improvisation, funk, and adventurous musicianship. In 2017, director Jason Miller set out to document the band as they recorded their first album in several years, secluding themselves at a picturesque studio in upstate New York. The result was “Not Not Jazz,” a title reflecting both the band’s genre-bending style and Miller’s goal to portray their artistic evolution through an intimate lens.
While Mmw had amassed critical acclaim and a dedicated following over their career, this film offered a rare glimpse into their creative process. Gone were the traditional talking head interviews; instead, Miller’s camera drifted among the trio as ideas emerged organically through improvised jam sessions. We see the birth of new melodies that would later emerge as finished songs, shaped through real-time group discussions...

After changing the reality TV landscape with E!’s Catching Kelce (never forget!), football star Travis Kelce made his scripted series debut via FX’s Grotesquerie on Wednesday.
Even better, Kelce’s appearance — which came towards the end of Episode 3 — didn’t require him to participate in any of the show’s actual, you know, grotesquerie. The last thing this world needs is for Judge Jeanine Pirro to start squawking on Fox News: “You Won’t Believe What Taylor Swift’s Boyfriend Did With a Goat-Headed Sex Puppet!”

Jackie Shane was a musical trailblazer. Born in 1940s Nashville, she rose to fame in the Toronto music scene of the 1960s with her distinctive soulful voice and dynamic stage presence. However, just as her star seemed destined to shine even brighter, she vanished from the public eye in 1971. While rumors swirled about what may have become of her, the truth of those missing years remained a mystery.
All of that changed with the 2019 release of the documentary Any Other Way: The Jackie Shane Story. Directed by Michael Mabbott and Lucah Rosenberg-Lee, the film sets out to rediscover the story of this lost icon and shine new light on both her musical brilliance and pioneering journey. As one of soul and R&b’s first black transgender performers, Jackie broke barriers just by living her authentic self. Kate Middleton is currently one of the most popular royals. Although she grew up as a commoner, Catherine, Princess of Wales, has managed to smoothly transition into her royal role.
According to an expert, Kate was able to integrate into the royal family by staying silent over bad press. Here’s the theory and how she did it.

Pop TV had a huge Emmys breakthrough thanks to “Schitt’s Creek,” which is nominated 15 times this year including Best Comedy Series. So it was ironic on Wednesday night, September 16, when Cheryl Campsmith (“One Day at a Time”) claimed Best Multi-Camera Picture Editing for a Comedy Series at the Creative Arts Awards; since “Schitt” hasn’t won any of its nominations yet, that makes “One Day” the first Pop TV series to win an Emmy.

The Emmy Awards ballot for Best Comedy Directing lists 185 episodes (from 104 series), so there will seven nominees under the new rules. The six nominees last year were:
“Barry” season 2: “The Audition” (Alec Berg) “Barry” season 2: “ronny/lily” (Bill Hader) “The Big Bang Theory” season 12: “The Stockholm Syndrome” (Mark Cendrowski) Winner — “Fleabag” season 1: “Episode 1” (Harry Bradbeer) “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” season 2: “All Alone” (Amy Sherman-Palladino) “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” season 2: “We’re Going to the Catskills!” (Daniel Palladino)

What is sexy? No, like, actually sexy? That’s the question that sparked director Shana Feste to create what would become “Dirty Diana,” her first foray into the podcast space. Not porn sexy, not heaving-bosom sexy, not boring sexy, not screaming sexy, really sexy, the kind of sexy that makes you want to, well, have sex. The kind of sexy that could make a lot of normal, everyday people want to have sex, and with their long-term partners to boot.
“Remember those HBO Sunday nights when ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Six Feet Under’ were on and you would just be so looking forward to getting in bed with your partner and watching together?” Feste said in a recent interview with IndieWire. “I remember thinking after I would watch those shows, ‘Wouldn’t it be so great if we could watch something that made us want to have sex with each other afterwards?...

“One Day at a Time” lived for another day. It aired its fourth season on the Pop TV network this spring after it had been cancelled by Netflix. Will its move finally produce Emmy nominations in top categories? It now shares a network with “Schitt’s Creek,” which earned a Best Comedy Series bid in 2019 and could win in 2020. Could success for that show carry over into overdue kudos for “One Day”? Scroll down to see 20 Emmy entries for the resurrected show across 16 categories.

For six years, cable network Pop TV nurtured its hilarious comedy “Schitt’s Creek” from a niche series to a cultural and awards phenomenon. By the time its fifth season finished airing, the show had gained an enormous following thanks in part to streaming on Netflix, which most likely contributed to its shocking––and beyond welcome––arrival at the Emmy Awards last year. For the first time, it earned key nominations in Comedy Series, Lead Actor (Eugene Levy), and Lead Actress (Catherine O’Hara).
Ironically, the inverse journey may benefit fellow Pop family comedy series “One Day at a Time.” After an unceremonious and widely-derided cancelation at Netflix, where it debuted and ran for three critically-acclaimed seasons, Pop TV came to the rescue of the multigenerational Cuban-American family show and renewed it for a fourth.

But for the show’s star Justina Machado, the change has only strengthened the show. “The show was already great,” Machado proclaims. “So it’s been great to go into the fourth season with a new family, a new network, a lot of new energy and falling into great writing and great storytelling.” Watch our exclusive video interview with Machado above.
Machado believes the move to weekly airings has only improved the viewing experience for fans. “I kind of always thought that this was a weekly show,” she claims. “This was a show that you can gather your family, gather your friends and sit down and watch it together.” The actress also says that allows the cast and producers to interact with viewers on social media. “We get to...

“It’s crazy that we’re back,” exclaims Gloria Calderon Kellett about the return of “One Day at a Time.” The re-imagined take on the classic late seventies sitcom was cancelled by Netflix in 2019 after a three-season run. Following a vociferous outcry on social media, the show has landed on Pop TV, which began airing the fourth season in late March. In our exclusive interview with show runners Calderon Kellett and Mike Royce (watch above), discuss the transition to cable from streaming as well as maintaining the show’s commitment to telling stories that are both entertaining and timely.

The Alvarez family proved that they are on top of their game on One Day At A Time Season 4 Episode 3.
"Boundaries" was entertaining, funny, and engaging -- the perfect ingredients for an amazing episode.
They did it all while they shed light on an aspect of the Alvarez family dynamics.
From One Day at a Time Season 1 Episode 1, it is clear how close the Alvarez family is. Lydia, the grandmother, lives with them, and they've endured quite a lot together.
But this episode showed just how close they are, when Alex accidentally walked in on Penelope masturbating.
There was a generational gap at play. Alex believed that their family should have boundaries, to avoid situations like that from happening ever again.
On the other hand, Penelope and Lydia laughed off his suggestion, thinking the idea was ridiculous.
Boundaries are for white people.

The fourth season of “One Day at a Time” has no problem telling its ex-network, Netflix, how it feels about them. The family sitcom that became the first Netflix-based television show to leave the streaming service and find a second life on a network starts its premiere on Pop TV with young Alex Alvarez (Marcel Ruiz) declaring, “It’s like there’s nothing good on Netflix anymore.” And for a series that has looked at tough issues like Ptsd and alcoholism, and even put on a self-financed campaign for Emmy consideration, this shot across the bow kickstarts a new world for the Alvarez family, one where there is a little more appreciation for those efforts.

Ronan Farrow, who won a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting on Harvey Weinstein, is releasing a book about the scandal called Catch and Kill — and it looks like it will be as damning as his original story.

The Women’s Image Awards has announced its 2018 nominations, with the BBC miniseries “Little Women” that aired on PBS’ “Masterpiece” series earning a leading six bids on the TV side. As for films, “Mary Queen of Scots” secured five spots on the ballot, followed by the Ruth Bader Ginsberg biopic “On the Basis of Sex” and Melissa McCarthy’s “Can Your Ever Forgive Me,” both with four.
Given the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement’s push against sexual harassment and lack of equal opportunity for women in Hollywood, the fact that an organization like Women’s Image Awards exists is more important than ever. The group that is celebrating its 20th anniversary has just announced its nominations in 18 categories. The TV and film nominees are selected from a field of submissions from networks and studios.

The Young and the Restless fans can look forward to an epic November sweeps week by the looks of the show’s latest trailer tease. Promising that, “Boundaries will be set, boundaries will be crossed, and will his behavior spiral out of control,” viewers are sure to be left shaken and stirred! For starters, The Mustache is back! Victor (Eric Braeden) is back (online at least) but is he large and in charge? Not according to Nick (Joshua Morrow) who immediately puts daddy dearest in check. It’s only a matter of time before Victor returns to Genoa City to tell his […]

Chloé Robichaud's Boundaries (2016) is exclusively showing July 31 – August 30, 2018 on Mubi in most countries in the world as part of the series Canada's Next Generation.Politics use to be a men-only territory, but women are now sharing a piece of it. Statistics, however, show that there are still less women than men who chose the political path. It is this rarity that first drew me to these women characters. Furthermore, I was interested by the fact that women, taken by the heavy tasks inherent to the profession of mediator or politician, must revisit the classic family stereotype, only recently deconstructed. And it is precisely this deconstruction of pre-established ideals that challenges and interests me in my work. The idea quickly imposed itself on me because of my interest for politics, and politicians. I must be gaining in maturity and I position myself more strongly as a woman, citizen and film director.

Christopher Plummer and Vera Farmiga in Boundaries. Photo courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics.
With a fine cast headed by Christopher Plummer and Vera Farmiga, Boundaries looked promising but the road trip dramedy manages to hit every cliche pothole along its way. Which is a shame – such a good cast deserved a better script.
Laura (Vera Farmiga) has daddy issues, and talks with her therapist about how she needs to set “boundaries” with her charming but unreliable father Jack (Christopher Plummer). Laura’s problem is a big heart, taking in endless strays and bordering on animal hording, but she is most devoted to her 13-year-old son Henry (Lewis MacDougall). It has been just them since her equally unreliable ex (Bobby Cannavale) abandoned them early on but Laura has carved out a stable life for her son.
When she gets a call that her dad has been kicked out of his retirement home for dealing pot.

Chicago – Combining an intimate, personal story with a superstar cast, writer/director Shana Feste realized a semi-autobiographical journey in her new film “Boundaries.” The cast includes Oscar winners Christopher Plummer and Vera Farmiga, as well as Lewis MacDougall (“A Monster Calls”), Kristen Schaal, Bobby Cannavale, Christopher Lloyd And Peter Fonda in a road trip picture that reunites ne’er do well Dad Jack (Plummer) with his desperate-to-connect-with-him daughter Laura (Farmiga).

After it made headlines in Hollywood for the wrong reasons, Sony Pictures Classics’ “Boundaries” is off to a tepid start at the indie box office, as it opened on five screens this weekend. Directed by Shana Feste and starring Vera Farmiga and Christopher Plummer, the film has made $30,395 for a per screen average of $6,079.
This past week, Peter Fonda, who has a minor role in the film, posted an angry Twitter rant aimed towards President Donald Trump and his wife and son, Melania and Barron, that was a knee-jerk response to the White House’s family separation policy towards undocumented migrants and asylum seekers.
“We should rip Barron Trump from his mother’s arms and put him in a cage with pedophiles,” the actor wrote in a tweet that he later deleted. “And see if mother will stand up against the giant a-hole she is married to.”

Yet another strong documentary tops new releases this weekend: Elvis Presley biodoc “The King” (Oscilloscope) from veteran documentarian Eugene Jarecki shows future interest. That said, it won’t register the massive numbers for “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” (Focus) and the continued success of “RBG” (Magnolia), two documentaries on iconic contemporary personalities that are both building continued response from audiences.
Other openings include a decent result for the Brazilian “Araby” in one theater. “Boundaries” (Sony Pictures Classics) fared less well despite some star presence in its initial two city openings.

“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” roared to $15.3 million at the Thursday box office, compared to “Jurassic World’s” preview number of $18.5 million in 2015.
Universal is projecting an opening weekend of $130-140 million, but multiple analysts who spoke with TheWrap said that competition from “Incredibles 2” could weigh down those numbers, with an opening of $120-130 million more likely. A $120-140 million start is around what the first “Jurassic World” was expected to make before it blew away expectations with a $208 million launch.
So far, the sequel has grossed $450.1 million worldwide, with markets including China, Germany, India, Malaysia, Russia, Spain and South Korea.

Johnny Depp’s bad boy persona used to help sell the movies he made. He was a real life Capt. Jack Sparrow, who could hit the press circuit armed with a few rococo anecdotes, delivered with a rock ‘n roll edge in between drags of freshly rolled cigarettes. His act was charming and his mystique undeniable.
No longer. A new Rolling Stone profile of the actor compares Depp’s current, debauched existence to Elvis’s last, drug-fueled days. It left readers and people in Hollywood alarmed with its portrayal of Depp, a 55-year-old man, drinking goblet after goblet of vintage red wine, smoking hash, and, it is heavily implied, partaking in even stronger substances, all while cordoned off in a gated mansion that leaves him cut off from reality.
Studios still in business with the actor were poring over the profile this morning, assessing what — if any — fallout there would be from the piece.

We always seem to get through the first half of the year a lot quicker than the second half, so here we are. Six months of cinema are behind us with another six months (and an annually unrelenting awards season) on the horizon. With that in mind, we’ve put our heads together to shout-out a number of films, performances, and achievements since January that deserve consideration at year’s end, lest they be forgotten by the upcoming onslaught.
Check out Tim Gray’s accompanying story summarizing the awards player so far and looking ahead at what’s to come this Oscar season.

Sony Pictures Classics on Wednesday evening (June 20) branded an aggressive tweet by Peter Fonda aimed at President Trump’s young son as “abhorrent, reckless and dangerous”, yet confirmed it was going ahead with this weekend’s release of Boundaries, in which the actor appears.
