- After the tragic death of star volleyball player Caroline "Line" Found, a team of dispirited high school girls must band together under the guidance of their tough-love coach in hopes of winning the state championship.

With Line as the captain, the Trojans have been undefeated and everyone has high hopes for West to win the championship again after the previous year, especially against their long-time rival, City High. During a party at her house, Line decides to secretly sneak away to visit her mother Ellyn at the hospital, where she is being treated for cancer. That night, Line herself is killed in a moped accident, leaving the entire community in mourning. Despite the school and community still in shock over Line's death, the Trojans' coach, Kathy Bresnahan continues to hold volleyball practice. She directly approaches Line's best friend, Kelley, encouraging her to return because Line would have wanted them to continue. Kelley refuses, but Bresnahan persists until Kelley agrees. After it is revealed that the Trojans lost their most recent match due to forfeit, Kelley encourages the entire school that they need to continue for Line's sake..

With Line as the captain, the Trojans have been undefeated and everyone has high hopes for West to win the championship again after the previous year, especially against their long-time rival, City High. No school has ever won the Championship two years in a row. Line just brings an infectious energy to the team and everybody in the whole town loves her. The team loses the first game of the season under Line's captaincy, as Kelley misfires and is benched by the coach Bresnahan after the first set.
During a party at her house, Line decides to secretly sneak away to visit her mother Ellyn (Jillian Fargey) at the hospital, where she is being treated for cancer. That night, Line herself is killed in a moped accident, leaving the entire community in mourning. At Line's wake, Ellyn insists on walking to her daughter's casket to pay her respects; Ellyn dies from cancer days after the wake, leaving her husband and Line's father Ernie grieving over the loss of his wife and his daughter.
Despite the school and community still in shock over Line's death, the Trojans' coach, Kathy Bresnahan (Helen Hunt) continues to hold volleyball practice, but the players refuse to turn up. She directly approaches Line's best friend, Kelley (Erin Moriarty), encouraging her to return because Line would have wanted them to continue. Bresnahan says that Kelley was Line's best friend, and all the girls will at Kelley to decide whether it is OK for them to play again. Kelley refuses, but Bresnahan persists until Kelley agrees. After it is revealed that the Trojans lost their most recent match due to forfeit, Kelley encourages the entire school that they need to continue for Line's sake. The team include Brie Tipton (Tiera Skovbye), Lizzy Ackerman (Nesta Cooper), Taylor Mitchell (Lillian Douchet-Roche), Mackenzie "Mack" Davidson (Natalie Sharp), and so on. Alex (Burkely Duffield) is new to the town and is Kelley's boyfriend.
West High struggles in practice and loses their first game badly, still discouraged from Line's death. The team needs a new setter as the setter sets the game for the hitters. Setters need accuracy to land the ball exactly where needed. In practice Kelley has the softest hands and Bresnahan designates her as the setter. The setter controls the game. But out on court, it all goes badly. The team is still losing games and Kelley learns that her teammates question her ability to be on the team, far from being accepted as their leader. The team believes that Kelley would not have even been on the team, if not for Line.
Bresnahan asks Ernie to attend the homecoming games to support the team. Bresnahan begins to run the team through grueling drills until a teammate can serve to one spot on the court. Kelley in the only player on the team who succeeds. She also studies all the plays and now knows them inside out. Kelley speaks to Ernie and says that when she didn't see him at the game, she felt that he was mad at her for taking Line's spot. Ernie says that he fully supports Kelley and the team and blames nobody for Line's death. He says that the only way the community is going to heal is by going back to normal.
As the weeks go by, the team begins to win and becomes motivated to win the state championship for Line. Bresnahan informs the team they need to win all of their remaining 14 games to be eligible for the state championship. The Trojans win their next fourteen games, giving them a chance to win the championship.
Before the state tournament begins, Kelley finds a gift from Line's father, Ernie (William Hurt), that encourages her not to play like Line or be her, but to "Live Like Line." The gift is team jerseys made on the theme of honoring Line. At the state tournament, the Trojans win the quarter-final game with ease but struggle to win their semi-final game. They move on to the championship, and have to go up against City High, who are heavily favored to win. Bresnahan tells the team to forget the pressure of winning and to play to enjoy the game. Ernie tells the team that whether they win or lose, they are already champions in his eyes.
Before the toss, the team names Kelley the new captain of the team. They all say that Kelley has earned her spot as the captain and should represent the team at the toss. Till now, the whole team would go for the toss, without a named captain. City takes the lead early in the match, but West manages to tie the score (as Kelley uses a different hitter to get past the 2 tall blockers on the City team) and force the fifth and final game. The Trojans go on to win and capture the state championship again. As the crowd cheers, Sweet Caroline plays in honor of Line and Kelley holds Line's picture up high and proud.
