How now, what news: the Criterion Channel’s July lineup is here. Eight pop renditions of Shakespeare are on the docket: from movies you forgot were inspired by the Bard (Abel Ferrara’s China Girl) to ones you’d wish to forget altogether (Joss Whedon’s Much Ado About Nothing), with maybe my single favorite interpretation (Michael Almereyda’s Hamlet) alongside Paul Mazursky, Gus Van Sant, Baz Luhrmann, Derek Jarman, and (of course) Kenneth Branagh. A neonoir collection arrives four months ahead of Noirvember: two Ellroy adaptations, two from De Palma that are not his neonoir Ellroy adaptation, two from the Coen brothers (i.e. the chance to see a DVD-stranded The Man Who Wasn’t There in HD), and––finally––a Michael Winner picture given Criterion’s seal of approval.

The MLB has faced major backlash for its new see-through uniforms made by the Fanatics company. Fans have pointed out the smaller letters for the players’ names on the back of their shirts and pants that look transparent.
In photos posted to X, users show examples where the players’ shirts are visibly tucked in the see-through pants.

Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today we chat about the action heroine: Sigourney Weaver! But what were the films she made in between Alien and Aliens? Other than A-sides The Year of Living Dangerously and Ghostbusters, there was Eyewitness, Deal of the Century, One Woman or Two (a French film!), and Half Moon Street.
Our guest is the incomparable Joe Reid, co-host of the essential podcast This Had Oscar Buzz. Be sure to check them out as Oscar season races to an exciting conclusion over the next few weeks.
Topics in this episode include: When exactly did the horse stables in midtown Manhattan shut down? What exactly was an early ‘80s film set like with both William Hurt and James Woods on it?...

John Roland, who served as a reporter and anchor for Channel 5 in New York for more than three decades, died Sunday, a rep for Fox Television Stations announced. He was 81.
In December 1969, Roland left Kttv in Los Angeles to join sister Metromedia station Wnew in New York as a general assignment reporter. He covered politics during the week and anchored the 10 p.m. newscast on weekends before taking over for Bill Jorgensen on the flagship 10 p.m. weeknight edition in 1979. (News Corp. and Fox took control of the station in 1986, and it was rebranded as Wnyw.)
Roland left the 10 p.m. post in 2003 to anchor new newscasts at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., then retired to Florida in June 2004.

It’s rare that a month goes by on Disney+ without a major new Marvel or Star Wars release. With its list of new releases of November 2022 though, Disney+ is going to attempt to go without it’s two big tentpoles.
That’s not to say that neither Star Wars nor Marvel will play a role on Disney+ this month. Star Wars prequel series Andor will continue to chug along, culminating with its 12th episode and season 1 finale on Nov. 23. Meanwhile, a couple of minor Marvel documentaries make their premieres in the beginning of the month.
In place of new Star Wars or Marvel blockbusters, Disney+ is turning some of its lesser-known franchises this month. Disenchanted, the long-awaited sequel to 2007’s Enchanted, premieres on Nov. 18. That will be followed by the season premiere of Willow, a series based on the 1988 movie of the same name.

The business of remaking drama series internationally continues to grow. While mega-budget new shows dominate the headlines, the likes of “In Treatment” are among the most-traveled scripted formats, and “Skam” and “Doctor Foster” are among the newer shows vying for top spot.
U.K.-based research house K7 Media has run the numbers and found that therapy drama “In Treatment,” is the best-selling international scripted remake of the past decade. The Dori Media-distributed show bowed in Israel in 2006. It went on to be remade by HBO in the U.S. with Gabriel Byrne, and by HBO Europe in several countries.
K7 has detailed the top unscripted formats for some time and its analysis is well-used by distribution execs selling formats, and buyers keen to discern trends.
“The scripted format business has grown,” K7 CEO Keri Lewis told Variety. “It’s the same as with unscripted, these are tried and tested formats.

Director Peter Yates remains an interesting fixture of the 1970s New American Cinema throng whose early works continue to resonate and inspire, particularly his early crime thrillers, such as Robbery (1967) and the Steve McQueen classic Bullitt (1968). While his 1970’s body of work includes a number of titles hailed as masterpieces, an uneven trend became evident for Yates by the 1980s, which includes overlooked gems and camp classics. Lately, many of Yates’ lesser known titles have begun to resurface, the latest of which is his 1989 ‘wrong man’ revenge thriller An Innocent Man (1989), which starred Tom Selleck and was a final tipping point for Yates into his least successful clutch of titles in the early to mid-1990s.…...

Based on a short by Lars Klevberg, the horror delves into a new type of haunting with an evil entity taking residence inside an antique Polaroid camera, an entity that preys and devours all those that innocently dare to pose for a picture picking off high school teens like it’s dining out on a pack of Haribo.

USA Network has opted not to order a second season of crime thriller anthology Eyewitness. The series, from Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak and adapted from the Norwegian drama Øyevitne, was an experiment for USA. It was done under a different business model: given a 10-episode straight-to-series order at a reduced budget. The serialized murder story was designed as a companion to USA’s venerable off-network crime drama procedural Law & Order: Svu on Sunday. Despite…...

Blindspot likes to spend a few episodes taking stylistic chances. Blindspot Season 2 Episode 8 is one of those episodes, and it's really up to you whether its multiple points of view worked or not. Once that device passes it has several scenes that are going to come back and bite these characters in the ass.
"We Fight Death On Thick Lone Waters" (previously known as "Do Not Slack, The Featherweight Wins") starts with a gangbusters idea: Jane and Weller have gone missing while undercover trying to capture an arms dealer, and the team is desperate to get them back at any cost.
Sounds great, right? But the episode isn't content just with that premise. It decides to spend the first portion of the episode recounting the events that led up to the disappearance from three different perspectives: Jane's as well as the two criminals they were working with, Lynn and Clive.

If you look at the Gotham Awards nominations from a traditional standpoint, they aren’t predictors of Oscar season. This year’s nominees, some of which were selected by members of IndieWire’s staff, certainly leave out a few potential contenders. But at least one well-received movie from the nominees stands a good chance of gaining steam: Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight.” The artful look at a young black child growing up under challenging circumstances in Miami was a breakout hit on the festival circuit and continues to gain momentum as A24 releases it this weekend. It’s not your typical Oscar bait, but this isn’t your typical Oscar season. So could “Moonlight” go all the way?

Rural, small town crime dramas have become a genre unto themselves over the past few years, recently epitomized in the largely flawless second season of FX’s adaptation of Fargo.
