Sony Pictures Television is looking for its next generation of viewers.

The studio’s kids division has launched a YouTube hub called Kidzuko targeted at children ages 3-8 that will offer them (and their parents) free access to some of Sony’s kids content. The channel, which went live Thursday morning, features episodes of Sony-produced series Octonauts, The Creature Cases, Peter Rabbit and Chico Bon Bon: Monkey With a Tool Belt, along with clips, compilation videos, educational content and shorts showing how to draw certain characters, among other offerings.

Kidzuko is part of a strategy at Sony Pictures Television — Kids, headed by Joe D’Ambrosia, to meet young viewers where they are — which is most often YouTube — and introduce them to the studio’s content.

“The watch time for kids on YouTube is just growing every year,” D’Ambrosia, executive vp and general manager for Spt — Kids, said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

According to director Will Gluck, studios wanted anything but “Anyone but You” in theaters. Gluck told The Hollywood Reporter that while he received numerous streaming offers for the original rom-com starring Glen Powell and Sydney Sweeney, he had to “convince” studios to even entertain a theatrical release. Thankfully, Gluck’s longtime partnership with Columbia led to the film opening in theaters. The rest is history — and profit.

“It was a little bit of a battle to convince everybody,” Gluck said. “I just had to explain how good the people in the movie are and how impactful a theatrical experience could be.”

Gluck previously directed adaptations of “Annie” and “Peter Rabbit” for Columbia. He also helmed several projects for Columbia’s sister label Screen Gems, including the beloved “Easy A.”

“Anyone but You” went on to gross $88 million domestically against a $25 million budget. The film earned $220.2 million at the worldwide box office.

Veteran studio executive and producer Hannah Minghella has joined Netflix as head of feature animation and live-action family film, Variety can exclusively report.

Minghella joins the tech giant from Bad Robot, where she worked across live action, animation and documentary features. She’ll now report to Dan Lin, the recently installed chariman of Netflix’s film operation. In addition to Minghella, Sharon Taylor will return to Netflix to lead production at the unit. Based in Vancouver, Taylor was previously the CEO of Animal Logic studios.

“Hannah brings her unique skill set and experience to this role, along with strong relationships with top filmmakers. As a studio executive and producer, Hannah has overseen many franchise films across animation and live-action. I believe her expertise will deepen our efforts to bring variety and quality to both our animation and live action family film slate,” said Lin.

Belgrad was at Sony for more than 25 years, most recently as president of the Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group. Before that, he spent a decade as president and head of production at Columbia Pictures.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has promoted Tahra Grant to chief communications officer in the wake of longtime leader Bob Lawson being elevated to head of corp comms for the entire Sony group.

Most recently, Grant has overseen corporate communications for the Motion Picture Group, a position she’s held for the last eight years. During that time, Grant has reported to Lawson, who will now be based in Tokyo, making for an easy transition within the company upon her taking the reins. She will now report directly to Sony Pictures Entertainment chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra.

Sony’s SVP of Corporate Communications for the Motion Picture Group, Tahra Grant, has been upped to EVP, Chief Communcations Officer for Sony Pictures Entertainment.

Grant succeeds Robert Lawson in a top Corp Comm post that reports directly to Sony Pictures Entertainment Chairman and CEO Tony Vinciquerra. As we told you back in February, Lawson was promoted to SVP, Corporate Communications for the entire Sony Group and is moving to the conglom’s HQ in Tokyo, Japan.

Grant arrived at the studio in 2016 and within a year was promoted to SVP of Media Relations. Grant worked with Lawson at New York-based PR firm Rubenstein Communications. During Grant’s run at Sony Pictures, she’s streamlined and sharpened corp comm ops, handling crisis and issues with deft skills during Covid and the double strikes, before and after. Grant is known for assessing promptly entertainment business situations as they arise, as well as advance strategizing for them.

Greg Daniels and Michael Koman could return to The Office universe, with Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore (The White Lotus) as cast members of the proposed spinoff. Gleeson and Inpacciatore would be part of an ensemble for the project, which Deadline says is close to entering production. Plot details about The Office spinoff remain a mystery.

We know only a little about the project beyond its setting in The Office universe. Daniels wants fans to know it’s not a reboot, even though it takes place in the same arena as the Steve Carell-led mockumentary series focusing on the fictional Dunder Mifflin Paper Company employees. Daniels says the new show could feature a camera crew doing a documentary about a subject outside the day-to-day lives of office workers surviving the daily grind and their toxic boss.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures has raised Maia Eyre to SVP of Creative Development at Columbia Pictures.

She will report to Sanford Panitch, President of Sony’s Motion Picture Group.

Eyre most recently brought in and oversaw box office hit romantic comedy, Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell and which has earned over $214 million worldwide and has become a very profitable movie for the Culver City lot.

Eyre has worked with Andrea Giannetti on the Jumanji franchise, which has collectively earned over $2 billion worldwide and Greta Gerwig’s critically acclaimed and Oscar-winning Little Women, which earned $220 million globally.

Other films Eyre has worked on at the studio include the Peter Rabbit franchise, which has earned $512.7 million globally and the Escape Room franchise, which has earned $223.7 million globally.

Eyre is currently overseeing a sequel to the horror film franchise, I Know What You Did Last Summer, helmed by Jen Kaytin Robinson.

Fallout is the most exciting Amazon Original dropping this month. Ming-Na Wen has joined the cast of Sony’s new “Karate Kid” film.

Previously announced cast members include “American Born Chinese” star Ben Wang in the titular role, plus Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, who will reprise their characters from previous entries in the franchise. Joshua Jackson and Sadie Stanley will also star.

Much like the film’s plot, details of Wen’s role are currently under wraps. The movie will be directed by Jonathan Entwistle, the creator and director of Netflix’s “I Am Not Okay With This” and “The End of the F—ing World.” “Peter Rabbit” writer Rob Lieber will pen the screenplay, while Karen Rosenfelt will produce. Sony Pictures will release the film in theaters on Dec. 13, 2024.

It has been a difficult few months for Paramount Global as the media company has been beset by bankruptcy concerns, reports of the potential sale of the company, and the planned layoff of hundreds of employees. Those terminations have begun to hit Paramount employees and on Thursday, Kid Screen exclusively reported that the company has laid off the entire team working on kids educational streaming service Noggin and that the platform will be sunset in the coming months.

Deadline understands the sitcom from James Corden and Ruth Jones will film a new episode over the summer with a view to airing at Christmas time this year, five years on from the previous ratings-topping special.

The casting comes after a global search that saw thousands of submissions from around the world, with 10,000 entries reported in the first 24 hours alone. According to studio insiders, Wang delivered a standout audition that demonstrated his deep connection to the character. It also helped that he is fluent in Mandarin and highly skilled across many forms of martial arts, including karate, wing chun/kung fu, gumdo, kempo and taekwondo. Some of those skills were already showcased on American Born Chinese, the well-regarded adaptation of the acclaimed coming-of-age fantasy graphic novel by Gene Luen Yang that also starred Michelle Yeoh.

The new Karate Kid will have Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio reprising their iconic characters from previous Karate Kid films.

Exclusive: Sony Pictures Television has taken a £39.7M ($50.5M) hit on Silvergate Media, the Peter Rabbit producer it acquired for $195M in 2019.

Sony declared the impairment in accounts for Columbia Pictures Corporation Limited, the parent company for its operations in the UK, where Silvergate was founded in 2011.

Columbia Pictures Corporation did not provide reasons for the impairment and Sony declined to comment when approached by Deadline.

William Astor, who co-founded kids TV juggernaut Silvergate Media, has stepped down as the company’s chair.

Silvergate, which was acquired by Sony Pictures Television in 2019, quietly re-branded as Sony Pictures Television – Kids in 2022.

“I can confirm I am no longer associated with Sony and have resigned as director and chairman,” Astor told Variety. He stepped down at the end of December.

Astor originally co-founded the company alongside well-known British television producer Waheed Alli back in 2011. It is best known for producing children’s animated franchises “Octonauts” — which has inspired films and theme park attractions across the world — and Nickelodeon animation “Peter Rabbit,” based on the classic children’s books by Beatrix Potter. It has also produced shows including “Hilda,” a Netflix animated series based on Luke Pearson’s graphic novels of the same name, and Nickelodeon’s “Sunny Day,” about the adventures of a young hair stylist.

Decades after the original "The Karate Kid" put star Ralph Macchio on the map and introduced audiences to Pat Morita's beloved Mr. Miyagi, Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith took a crack at remaking the classic in 2010 -- though in a modernized setting and, notably, not portraying the exact same characters from the original. The franchise kept the nostalgia going with Netflix's popular "Cobra Kai" series, which reunited Macchio's Daniel Larusso with William Zabka's Johnny Lawrence. Now, not even the Cobra Kai dojo feels big enough to contain what's coming down the pipeline next.

Will Gluck’s upcoming romantic comedy Anyone But You, starring Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell is pushing its release date. The film now opens on December 22 instead of December 15. The new release date puts the film in a prime spot for that sweet 4-Day Christmas weekend box office haul.

Paul Noble, a veteran executive who served as co-head of global theatrical marketing at Sony Pictures Entertainment since 2021, has died. He was 51.

The company confirmed to Deadline that Noble died September 9 of bulbar Als at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood. He has been diagnosed in summer 2021.

“Paul was a rare and marvelous human being, possessed with an abundance of positivity, warmth, humor and kindness,” Sony Chairman Tom Rothman wrote in an email to staff. “He faced his diagnosis with courage and grace and in doing so set a remarkable example for his family and, indeed, for all of us. To say he will be missed is of course an understatement.”

Following two family-friendly adventures that brought the beloved rabbit to life, Peter Rabbit 3 updates have been relatively scarce. Based on Beatrix Potter's series of children's books, the first Peter Rabbit movie was released in 2018 to strong box office and warm reviews. The sequel was released in 2021 to a more mixed response and earning nearly half of the original's total gross. Peter Rabbit, directed by Will Gluck, follows the eponymous troublemaking rabbit, voiced by James Corden, and his family of animals (including voices of Elizabeth Debicki and Margot Robbie) and humans Bea and Thomas McGregor (Rose Byrne and Domnhall Gleeson). The mixed family travels to London to discuss Bea's book deal with a publisher, and Peter gets mixed up in some hijinks along the way.

Though there seems to be plenty of room for the franchise to grow from here, fans are still waiting to hear any real news on a third entry.

In news first reported by Deadline, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson is set to direct a live-action/animation hybrid remake of "The Aristocats" for the House of Mouse. The film is being compared to similar hybrid films like "Sonic the Hedgehog" and "Space Jam: A New Legacy," featuring live-action performers crossed with CGI. There's no word yet on whether or not this means the titular cats will look like CGI updates of their animated origins, or if this will be another semi-realistic uncanny valley adventure similar to Disney's recent remake of "The Lion King."

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson will direct a remake of Disney’s 1970 animated film “The Aristocats,” Disney has confirmed to TheWrap.

Questlove, who won an Oscar last year for his Hulu documentary “Summer of Soul,” will serve as director, executive producer, and oversee music on the project, which will be a live-action/animation hybrid retelling of the story of Duchess, a Parisian cat whom is left an immense fortune by her owner only to be thrown out into the countryside with her three kittens by a jealous butler. Out alone for the first time, Duchess and her kittens turn to a street-smart tomcat named Thomas O’Malley for help.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, the Oscar-winning director of “Summer of Soul,” is helming a remake of “The Aristocats” for Disney.

Similar to “Sonic the Hedgehog” or “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” the adaptation of “The Aristocats” will be a blend of live action and CGI.

Thompson, the drummer of the Roots, is also executive producing and overseeing music for the film. As previously announced, “Peter Rabbit” filmmaker Will Gluck and Pixar’s “Onward” writer Keith Bunin are adapting the screenplay.

Tarik Trotter, Shawn Gee and Zarah Zohlman will serve as executive producers. Gluck, via his production company Olive Bridge, is producing along with Thompson’s Two One Five Entertainment.

During Monday’s premiere event in New York City for the upcoming fourth and final season of her HBO series, the actress revealed to Entertainment Tonight that she and husband Dave Lawson are expecting their first child together.
