Season 11 has ended, but Doctor Who is the story that never ends. What did Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures and Class leave unanswered?
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
This feature contains spoilers for every series of Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Class.
It's a big universe out there and it's only got bigger since Doctor Who returned. Returning to screens in the multi-channel age, it's not surprising that the new series' success has led to spin-offs. In the last 13 years, the program has evolved into one of the BBC's biggest global properties, creating more chances to explore the Whoniverse for its writers and producers.
Beyond the Tardis-faring adventures of Christopher Eccleston, David Tennant, Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and now Jodie Whittaker, we've had three major spin-off series “from the world of Doctor Who” since 2005. All were made for vastly different audiences to each other,...

As two of the biggest geek-friendly shows on British soil, Doctor Who and Sherlock are practically in a league of their own when it comes to fandom.
The latter is now on hiatus for the foreseeable future – season 5 is still on the cards, for what it’s worth, but Benedict Cumberbatch’s stacked schedule (see: Avengers: Infinity War) has pushed Sherlock‘s return further down the pipeline. Doctor Who, on the other hand, is gearing up for a historic transition, as Peter Capaldi prepares to hand over the keys to the Tardis to Jodie Whittaker, the incoming Time Lord who will assume pole position this festive season.
And as Capaldi’s victory lap continues, series producer and director Rachel Talalay recently shared a candid pic of the Twelfth Doctor paying a visit to 221b Baker Street, thereby fueling the longstanding ‘WhoLock’ fan theory – essentially, a vocal pocket of fans believe...

As Doctor Who series 11 adds a trio of soap opera stars to its cast. And it makes sense...
What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.
Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.
We won't go so far as Doctor Who...

The “Doctor Who” spinoff “Class” won’t be getting a second semester. The BBC announced that the show would be canceled after just one season. Chances were high that “Class” wasn’t going to get a renewal. The show received generally positive reviews from critics but failed to attract an audience. Lead writer Patrick Ness already announced on Twitter that he wasn’t going to be writing any more episodes. But there was no word from the network itself about whether it would continue without him until BBC 3 controller Damian Kavanagh told RadioTimes Thursday that the spinoff was dead. Also...

While Doctor Who itself prepares to head into a new era – with the transition between Peter Capaldi and showrunner Steven Moffat, to new Doctor Jodie Whittaker and showrunner Chris Chibnall now underway – it’s officially the end of all things for spinoff series Class. After weeks of speculation, BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh has confirmed that the show has been cancelled after just one season.
Class was created by Patrick Ness, with Steven Moffat acting as executive producer, alongside Brian Minchin – who produced the previous two Doctor Who spinoff shows, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and Torchwood. Its premise revolved around the familiar and regular Doctor Who location of Coal Hill Academy, with a group of students and staff supporting the work of the Doctor in dealing with extra-terrestrial menaces – against a backdrop of pubescent trials and tribulations. Specifically, one teacher and one student are revealed to be alien refugees, hiding from their inter-galactic persecutors,...

Poor John Carpenter. Like nearly all of the truly great horror filmmakers, his movies are destined to be misunderstood in their time, only finding the proper appreciation several years after the fact when the rest of the world is finally able to catch up to what he’s doing. It’s not always the case, of course, as he has had a handful of commercial hits; for many years, his breakthrough movie Halloween was the most successful independent film ever made. It was the rare instance in which audiences were tuned in to what Carpenter was doing at the time he was doing it. Most of his other great films—and he has more great films than almost any other director working in the genre—took years to connect with the public. Don’t blame Carpenter for that. He’s a man ahead of his time.

The Rundown
Last week’s excellent episode played mind games with us and “Doctor Who’s” characters when it was revealed that everyone’s journey that we were following (in that episode anyway) was fake, just part of an elaborate simulation of Earth by alien beings. While we know that they were all part of a program, it was nevertheless heartbreaking to see these “people,” who definitely seemed to have gained sentience, realize their lives were a lie. We also learned that the Doctor (Peter Capaldi) was supposed to execute Missy (Michelle Gomez), but instead agreed to watch over her for 1,000 years, presumably in the vault. We say “presumably” because, well, when Steven Moffat is writing, sneaky surprises might be in store.

Every time the star of “Doctor Who” has announced they’re stepping down, speculation regenerates about his possible replacement. Ah, but what if this time, instead of a white male Doctor, the BBC finally listened to fans who’ve been seeking some diversity for the role?

This source is not an official BBC spokesperson though, and the statement the BBC released to Nerdist didn’t confirm anything: “No casting decisions have been made yet for ‘Doctor Who’ Season 11.”

The Rundown
Finally, finally! After a year without a proper season, “Doctor Who” returned and felt familiar and comfortable, no mean feat when introducing a new companion. The episode lulled viewers and Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie) into complacency first by setting much of the early action at St. Luke’s University in Bristol, before shifting to the more spectacular aspects of the Whoniverse we all know and love. Overall, the premiere did well to set up a rapport between Twelve and Bill, while teasing out a few story arcs to come.

An exchange between two of the teen protagonists in BBC America’s “Doctor Who” spinoff “Class” takes place a little over halfway through the season and exemplifies some of the series’ unique strengths:

There is going to be a lot of the Doctor Who universe on BBC America this weekend with the April 15 premiere of the last season of Peter Capaldi as the eccentric Time Lord and the stateside debut of the teen spinoff Class. Adding a wonderful and vibrant new companion to Capaldi's swan song in Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie), this 10th season of the relaunched Doctor Who is both a treat and disappointment. Both sides of that coin come out of the fact that, as Capaldi has…...

This month is packed with great television. A lot of our favorite shows are returning for new seasons and, in one special case, a resurrected series. Plus there are exciting shows and movies making debuts. That’s why we’re introducing a weekly guide to help keep track of everything worth watching, whether it’s on broadcast, cable, or streaming.
Here’s your breakdown, day by day (and all times Eastern), for April 9–15:
SUNDAYFeud: Bette and Joan (FX, 10pm)
It’ll be difficult to top last week’s brilliantly paced Oscars-set episode, but by now we’re in for the homestretch of the story of Davis and Crawford. In this week’s episode, “Hagsploitation,” the two rivals are sought to reunite for a follow-up to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, and not to spoil film history, but we’re in for a look at the making of 1964’s Hush…Hush...

Magnificent. Just magnificent.
Man, Archer just does not disappoint. I think Archer Season 8 Episode 1 was one of the best season premieres in this show's entire run.
In yet another thematic overhaul, Archer: Dreamland starts off in a sharply written, intriguing, satisfying and ever hilarious way. To those who had reservations about this, I think you can put those fears to rest.
I really cannot say enough about Adam Reed's brilliant mind here.
So very many shows have tried to shake things up to keep a sense of newness and excitement, only to end up losing their way because they've veered so far from what the show is and who the characters are.
Reed is having none of that.
With every overhaul of Archer, whether they're drug dealers, private detectives, or whether it's a noir entirely in Sterling Archer's mind, Reed never loses sight of all the things that...

“Doctor Who” and his Tardis are rapidly approaching for a new season, and with it, a new trailer by BBC One.
The spot includes many of the clips we’ve seen in the previous BBC America trailer, including the dynamic between the new Companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) and assistant Nardole (Matt Lucas), the emoji-eyed robot and the retro Cybermen.

Ah, but the eagle-eyed Whovian will see new footage, and we have at least two big takeaways. The first is another shot of Missy (Michelle Gomez) the female form of the renegade Time Lord who was once the Doctor’s friend. This is not just any clip of Missy though. Apparently, she has learned to dab, further proving her evil nature.
The second big takeaway though is far less terpsichorean and more significant to the show’s ongoing mythology.

A version of this article originally appeared on EW.com.
“This is the gateway to everything that ever was — or ever can be,” says Peter Capaldi’s Time Lord at the start of the just-released new trailer for Doctor Who season 10, Capaldi’s last.
Is he talking about the Tardis? His own brain? One of K-9’s poops? Who knows! Regardless, the Doctor might as well be discussing the trailer itself, which is jam-packed with characters both new and — in the case of the Mondasian Cyberman — very old, at least when it comes to the real-life chronology of the show.

“Doctor Who” is set to premiere in just a month’s time, which means new companion Bill (Pearl Mackie) had better get ready for Cybermen, a trip to Mars, and the return of Missy, Aka The Master (the delightfully manic Michelle Gomez). Those are only some of the adventures teased in the trailer below, which also spotlights Matt Lucas as the Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) assistant Nardole.

These days, The Wind Waker is generally regarded as one of the finest entries in the Zelda franchise - not bad going, given that its cel-shaded, cutesy design provoked something of a backlash before its release in 2002. As well as a corking adventure in its own right, The Wind Waker was also the game that introduced the world to Toon Link, the stumpy, wide-eyed version fo the hero who's since appeared in such games as The Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks on DS.

Though Medusa is technically the beginning of The CW's four-part superhero event, it is mostly a Supergirl-specific episode until its very end. For some, this might have been disappointing. We only got a tiny little cross-show interaction in the final moments, but, hopefully, for most, the strength of this episode overcame any dashed crossover expections.
Like the rest of Supergirl season two, Medusa was an emotion-driven roller coaster of a ride that expanded this world and these characters in awesomely affecting ways. Pay attention during the crossover, other CW superhero TV shows. This is what it looks like...

There was a point in Gotham season three when it felt like this show was dealing with some of its major problems. It streamlined its vast ensemble cast into a few focused plots. It broke out of many of its redundant narrative cycles, hinting at a potential romance between Ed and Oswald that felt organic and sweet and increased queer representation to boot. It stopped trying to make Jim Gordon into Batman for five seconds and, instead, recognized that he was kind of a mess.

This was an emphatic episode, start to finish. There was no let-up in its urgent intensity. Between April usurping the Shadow Kin crown and Charlie almost dropping his race’s version of the A-bomb, it was an exhausting forty minutes. There were resolute speeches, battlefield speeches, pleading speeches, a brief introduction to Sikhism’s external articles of faith, then yet more impassioned speeches.

Looking ahead to the movies heading to cinemas in time for Christmas...
The festive season is a great time to go to the pictures. There’s nothing quite like taking solace when it’s cold outside by cramming in with some like-minded folk to see a (hopefully) great movie.
Unsurprisingly, Hollywood studios have cottoned on to this. Year on year, there seems to more and more choice at the cinema come Christmas time. It’s almost like a second summer season, in terms of the sheer volume of major movies on offer. This isn’t likely to change any time soon, especially when you look at the cash banked by Star Wars: The Force Awakens last Christmas. And that's not to mention the festive season's nearness to the Oscar race, which means that the major movies keep coming well into January.

1.1 For Tonight We May Die & 1.2 The Coach With The Dragon Tattoo
“Where are all the teachers?” screams a girl running into a packed school prom to warn her classmates of their impending death. Thus Class obeys the first rule of any young adult adventure: adults should be absent, useless or evil; the kids are the ones who save the world.
With one exception in this case. As a Doctor Who spin-off, a certain Gallifreyan has licence to pop in and wave his Sonic Screwdriver about from time to time, as he does in For Tonight We May Die.

The Steven Moffat seasons of the parent show have been patchy, to say the least, and the premise for this spin-off sounded an awful lot like Buffy The Vampire Slayer. But, that scepticism has now given way to excitement, as the full-length trailer reveals potential for a gripping, self-aware drama that incorporates the very best essence of Doctor Who.
Starring Greg Austin (Mr Selfridge), Fady Elsayed (Penny Dreadful), Sophie Hopkins (Since We Last), Vivian Oparah, and Katherine Kelly (Mr Selfridge), Class also boasts a brief appearance by The Doctor himself – Peter Capaldi – in the pilot episode.
