The Best Actress race is already extremely stacked as we get closer to the 2025 awards season, with at least 10 significant contenders about to battle it out for only five slots at the Oscars. But if there’s one performance that is going to make it in, I believe it’s Nicole Kidman in “Babygirl,” written and directed by Halina Reijn. Why? Here are my top five reasons.
1. The performance.
Kidman gives a ferocious tour-de-force performance in “Babygirl,” which played at the Venice and Toronto Film Festivals and is opening in theaters in December. Kidman plays a high-powered CEO named Romy who enters a relationship with an intern named Samuel (Harris Dickinson) and in turn puts her job and family in jeopardy. Romy makes questionable choices throughout the narrative, but Kidman always keeps her grounded and empathetic in what I believe is her best movie performance since 2010’s “Rabbit Hole.”

Following the incredible success of “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan have teamed up to tackle the second installment of their “Monster” anthology series for Netflix, “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story.”
The limited series seeks to discover who the real monsters in the high-profile murder trial were. The Menendez brothers captivated America, as their televised Court TV trial is one of the first of its kind. The two boys killed their parents on Aug. 20, 1989, at only 18 and 21 years old. Their counsel called it self defense, while the prosecution called them greedy. Both were convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after two trials.
Murphy assembled established actors like Javier Bardem, Nathan Lane, and Chloë Sevigny to embody the real-life adult characters but brought on some newcomers to portray the Menendez brothers themselves.

Dune: Part Two director Denis Villeneuve recently shared a positive update on Warner Bros.' plans for a third movie, confirming that the script for an adaptation of Dune: Messiah is officially in the works.
Though the filmmaker hasn't full committed to helming the project, we'd be very surprised if he didn't return to finish his take on this saga - although, if and when he does, he won't actually consider it a trilogy.
“First, it’s important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,” Villeneuve says of the first two movies during an interview with Vanity Fair. “It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That’s done and that’s finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it’s not like a trilogy. It’s strange to say that, but if I go back there,...

Could Nicole Kidman score a fifth Best Actress nomination for her performance in racy thriller Babygirl, which has just debuted at the Venice Film Festival?
The short answer is yes. The longer answer is that it’s complicated.
In the Halina Reijn-directed erotic-thriller, Kidman plays a high-powered CEO who puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern (played by Harris Dickinson).
The early word on Kidman from critics here on the Lido is very positive. Deadline’s Damon Wise said: “It’s hard to ignore the amount of dedication, not to mention naked flesh, that she brings to the role….Kidman really goes the distance, imbuing Romy with a psychological vulnerability that is missing from the film it most obvious sounds like (50 Shades of Grey) and presenting a unique reversal of the film it most obviously looks...

[Editor’s note: this list was originally published in April 2024. It has since been updated with new performances from Kidman.]
Nicole Kidman is the rare actress in the 21st century who, like the stars of Hollywood’s golden years, doesn’t disappear into roles so much as elevate films by her mere presence.
She’s certainly swung big at mainstream blockbusters (think: the “Aquaman” films) that might feel out of her step with her character-driven work elsewhere (like most of the films on the list that follows). But that’s because the Australian icon is unafraid of any role, whether stripping down her post-Oscar, A-lister veneer to film Lars von Trier’s Brechtian “Dogville” in Sweden, slipping into a bathtub with the 10-year-old possible reincarnation of her dead husband in Jonathan Glazer’s “Birth,” or, yes, donning a fake nose to play a suicidal Virginia Woolf for her Oscar-winning turn in “The Hours.”

Exclusive: Jeff Daniels (A Man in Full), Jared Harris (Chernobyl) and J.K. Simmons (Being the Ricardos) have signed on to star in Reykjavik, a historical drama from Sk Global (Anyone But You) that chronicles one of the most significant diplomatic achievements of modern times: The Reykjavik Summit.
Reykjavik takes place at the most dangerous point of the Cold War, watching as political enemies Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev meet in Iceland over one long, tense weekend to decide if there will be peace or war in the world.
Daniels plays U.S. President Reagan, with Harris as Soviet leader Gorbachev, and Simmons as United States Secretary of State George Shultz.
Michael Russell Gunn will direct from his own script, in his feature debut, following his work with Sk Global as showrunner of its acclaimed limited series Thai Cave Rescue for Netflix. He also produces alongside John Logan Pierson. Production will commence on location in Reykjavik, Iceland in early October, with extensive filming at Höfði House, the actual site of the 1986 summit.
Sources tell Deadline that Gunn’s project is one that he’s spent years working on and researching. His work began when he drove out to Stanford to interview Secretary of State Shultz before his passing, receiving now-declassified transcripts from the summit. With Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the recent revelation that the U.S. will again deploy long-range missiles in Germany, the hope is to reflect on how we, as citizens and as nations, can come together to work past our differences, in pursuit of a better, safer world.
Daniels is coming off of A Man in Full, Netflix’s limited series from David E. Kelley, which adapts the 1998 novel from Tom Wolfe. Recently, he was also seen starring opposite Maura Tierney in the crime drama American Rust, which ran for two seasons.
Most recently boarding Kathryn Bigelow’s new film for Netflix, as we were first to report, Harris also stars in Apple TV+ and Skydance’s sci-fi series Foundation, based on the works of Isaac Asimov, which previewed its forthcoming third season at Comic-Con. Previously garnering Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Chernobyl, he’s also recently wrapped on the indies Brave the Dark and Reawakening.
Following roles in films like National Champions and Being the Ricardos, Simmons’ upcoming slate includes the Clint Eastwood pic Juror #2, Jason Reitman’s Saturday Night, Amazon’s sequel to The Accountant and holiday event film Red One, and the addiction film The Prince written by David Mamet.
Prior to Thai Cave Rescue, Gunn wrote and produced for the critically acclaimed Showtime series Billions, as well as the political thriller Designated Survivor for ABC and Netflix, having begun his career on Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom. On the film side, he sold his script The Virginian about a young George Washington to Warner Bros, and is currently adapting a novel for Charlize Theron at Universal.
Indie studio Sk Global has produced and financed over 100 features, dating back to its origins as Sidney Kimmel Entertainment. Most recently, the company unveiled the acclaimed rom-com Anyone But You, a star-making project for Glen Powell, who led the cast opposite Sydney Sweeney. The Sony pic emerged as a sleeper hit upon its December 2023 release, proving that rom-coms can continue to work theatrically as it grossed over $220 million worldwide. Also recently unveiling the acclaimed limited series Thai Cave Rescue, as well as inspirational docs like Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, which just debuted on Netflix, the company is also responsible for such acclaimed titles as Crazy Rich Asians, Hell or High Water and The Place Beyond the Pines, among many others.
Daniels is repped by CAA, Martino Management, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes; Harris by CAA, Gateway Management, Independent Talent Group in the UK, and Sloane, Offer, Weber & Dern; Simmons by Gersh; and Gunn by WME and Artists First.

Can a single, playful moment truly turn the tide of someone’s career? This is the entertainment industry, where even the smallest joke can reverberate across the pond of fate and become defining milestones; such a concept is not a whimsy—it is a reality.
Okay, so picture a scene filled with laughter and disbelief as Nicole Kidman reveals her past crush on Jimmy Fallon, setting the stage for an anecdote that teeters on the brink of career-altering. It was on The Tonight Show in 2015 that Kidman bashfully recounted that fateful meeting at Fallon’s apartment—a rendezvous she believed to be a romantic “hang”, while he obliviously anticipated a business chat about Bewitched.

Still, Murphy is already discussing the possibility of a Beverly Hills Cop 5. Speaking with Today about Axel Foley’s return to screens, Murphy said he’s not opposed to playing the character again if the story is there.
When asked about playing the wise-cracking, case-solving Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop 5, Eddie Murphy said, “I hope so because this movie turned out so good, especially if you grew up watching the movie, then you’ll really, really love this new picture.”
Speaking about Axel Foley’s appeal, Murphy says the trick to his lasting popularity is that he has something for everyone to relate to. “Axel is the everyman. He’s not a superhero or super cop. He’s the everyman that rises to the occasion.

Few actresses of her era take as many chances as Nicole Kidman. The Oscar- and Emmy Award-winning actress has been one of the industry’s most sought-after performers since the early 1990s, and appeared in everything from splashy musicals like “Moulin Rouge!” (which netted Kidman her first of five Academy Award nominations) to historical fiction like “The Hours” (which won Kidman the Best Actress Oscar for playing Virginia Woolfe) to psychological thrillers like “Eyes Wide Shut” (where she starred opposite her now-ex-husband Tom Cruise) to blockbuster superhero movies like “Aquaman.”
And that’s just on the big screen. In recent years, Kidman has acquitted herself exceedingly well in a spate of prestige television series, winning an Emmy for her nuanced work in “Big Little Lies” and scoring a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for “The Undoing.”
But her biggest challenge yet was arguably her turn as Lucille Ball in Aaron Sorkin...

A year and a half has gone by since A24 announced that they were re-teaming with Halina Reijn, the director of their slasher satire Bodies Bodies Bodies, on a erotic thriller called Babygirl, with Nicole Kidman (Being the Ricardos), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), Harris Dickinson (The Iron Claw), Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me), and Jean Reno (Léon: The Professional) set to star in the film. Now they have revealed (via Deadline) that they’re bringing Babygirl to theatres just in time for Christmas viewings, giving it a December 20th release date. That’s the same weekend Disney is releasing Mufasa, Paramount is releasing Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Angel Studios is releasing the faith-based post-apocalyptic film Homestead.
Christmas seems like an odd time to release an erotic thriller, but maybe this counter-programming will work out for A24. While families are taking the kids to Mufasa and Sonic and the devout see Homestead,...

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. Dune: Part Two has been available to purchase on Digital services for almost a month now, but Warner Bros. has finally announced a streaming date for Denis Villeneuve's critically-acclaimed sci-fi sequel.
Fans will get to return to Arrakis from the comfort of their couches very soon, as Dune: Part Two is set to premiere on Max next Tuesday, May 21.
Although the movie didn't reach $1 billion as some predicted (always a long shot in the current box office climate), it did pass $700 million worldwide, meaning a third film based on Frank Herbert's second novel, Dune: Messiah, is likely.
Part Three hasn't been officially greenllt, but is believed to be in the early stages of development - though there's no guarantee that Villeneuve will to return to complete the trilogy.
“If we go back, it needs to be real, it needs to be relevant," the filmmaker told Empire in a recent interview.

Anya Taylor-Joy makes a very brief appearance in Dune: Part Two, but if and when Denis Villeneuve returns to helm his adaptation of Dune: Messiah, the Furiosa star will have a much more substantial role.
If you haven't seen the movie yet, spoilers follow.
In Part One, we learn that Paul Atreides' mother, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica, is pregnant with the late Duke Leto's child. When the Fremen take in the survivors of the Harkonnen massacre, Jessica agrees to become the tribe's new Reverend Mother (she isn't really given a choice) and is "persuaded" to drink the Water of Life (a blue substance that's been extracted from a juvenile sandworm).
This gives Jessica incredible foresight and knowledge of previous generations, while also awakening similar abilities in her unborn daughter, who begins to communicate with and seemingly influence her mother's actions.

Nicole Kidman was honored with the Life Achievement Award on Saturday, making history as the first Australian to earn the top honor from the American Film Institute.
The 56-year-old Being the Ricardos actress becomes the 49th person to be awarded this accolade by the AFI, which honors an individual for their contribution to the advancement of the American culture through motion pictures and television.
Nicole Kidman’s Supportive Family
Nicole celebrated her new accomplishment with her husband, Keith Urban, and their two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, turning the event into a family affair—a glamorous one, if I may add. Her sister Antonia was also at the event with her husband, Craig Marran, and their daughter, Sybella Hawley.
Sunday and Faith, who made their red carpet debut at the event, looked lovely in Monique Lhuillier. Sunday, 16, donned a white floral-printed gown with a sweetheart neckline, while Faith, 13, wore a strapless coral trumpet gown.

Aaron Sorkin has revealed he is writing a movie about the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol Building. During a live episode of The Town with Matt Belloni podcast, the film was teased as a potential sequel to The Social Network tracing the rise of online misinformation.
When asked what role Facebook and other social networks should play in “responsibly moderating our news media and thus our democracy,” Sorkin glanced at his publicist before pulling back the curtain on his next project.
“I’ll be writing about this. I blame Facebook for January 6th,” Sorkin said, adding that we’d need “to buy a movie ticket” to find out why he believes the social network played a crucial role in the coup attempt.
Sorkin continued by criticizing the social platform in a more general sense, saying, “Facebook has been, among other things, tuning its algorithm to promote the...

Nicole Kidman is opening up about why she and Reese Witherspoon feel now is the time for Big Little Lies season three.
In an interview with Elle, the multi-award-winning actress confirmed that she and her co-star and fellow executive producer have been discussing where they want their stories to go in a possible third season. She also explained why time away from the show was important.
“There’s the richness of the storylines, which we’d always discussed, but it needed time because there’s actual unbelievable depth to the next chapter of these women’s lives and their children’s lives — because children grow up, and that’s kind of fascinating,” Kidman told the publication.
Sources familiar with the series told The Hollywood Reporter in January that Witherspoon and Kidman have an idea they are both excited about for season three and were working to put together a formal pitch for HBO.

J.K. Simmons, the voice actor of Omni-Man in Robert Kirkman’s Prime Video animated superhero series, has announced his top pick for the role of the Viltrumite in the Invincible live-action movie that’s still under development.
Fans have continued to throw names into the mix of actors to embody the title character and his father in the film since the announcement of the big-screen adaptation in 2017.

And now, courtesy of Simmons, we have another potential candidate, who the 69-year-old believes would be a proper fit for Nolan Grayson. That someone is none other than X-Men star Hugh Jackman. With ample experience in the superhero genre and enough gravitas to qualify for the complex role, Jackman’s foray into the Invincible world wouldn’t seem far-fetched or unrealistic.

“Maestro” did well at the Makeup Artists & Hair Stylists Guild on Feb. 18 winning two of its three bids. It claimed the prizes for both period/character makeup and special effects races but lost period/character hairstyling to “Barbie,” which was snubbed by the Oscars. Likewise for “Saltburn,” which won both contemporary makeup and hairstyling.
Of this year’s other Oscar nominees, “Poor Things” lost all three of its bids just hours after pulling off an upset at the BAFTAs, “Golda” and “Oppenheimer” were each defeated in a single race while “Society of the Snow” was snubbed by the guild.
These wins boost the odds for “Maestro” to prevail at the Academy Awards. In the decade-long history of these guild honors, there has been just one year when an Muahs winner did not go on to claim the Oscar for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

If there’s one thing Marvel is very good at, it’s casting. From Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man to Chris Hemsworth as Thor, the studio has a knack for finding the ideal actors to bring their favorite comic book characters to life. And it appears that they might have their sights set on another prominent face in the industry for their next big bad: Javier Bardem.
Galactus, the Devourer of Worlds, could be portrayed by none other than the Spanish Oscar-winning actor in the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot. This follows on the heels of the announcement that Pedro Pascal is slated to star as Mr. Fantastic, providing yet another reason to look forward to the eagerly awaited superhero flick.

Annette Bening is an actor’s actor. Like many of the greats before her, she began her career in the theatre. Through the 80s, she quietly compiled a library of rich, complex characters before making her Tony-nominated broadway debut in 1987’s “Coastal Disturbances.”
Bening then made her well deserved transition over to Hollywood with John Hughes’ “The Great Outdoors.” The film didn’t perform as well as hoped, nor did Milos Forman’s “Valmont” which was released the following year, but they both paved the way for Bening’s eventual Oscar-nominated breakout as Myra Langtry in Stephen Frears’ “The Grifters.”
She got particularly close to Oscar gold with “American Beauty” in 2000. Annette bagged the BAFTA and SAG award for her iconic portrayal of the colourfully volatile wife-in-crisis, Carolyn Burnham. She lost to Hilary Swank (“Boys Don’t Cry”) though, who had edged her out at the Globes.
Swank clearly was Bening’s kryptonite,...

Charles Melton hasn’t had a great week. First, he missed out on the BAFTA longlist for Best Supporting Actor. Then, he was snubbed by the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards in their list of official nominees. The two notable omissions have damaged Melton’s chances of an Oscar nomination for his breakout role in Todd Haynes‘ exquisite “May December.”
The Netflix movie follows Natalie Portman as an actress who visits a couple (Julianne Moore and Melton) to do research on them for a film based on the couple’s past scandal. The scandal in question revolves around the couple’s initial affair, which began when the woman was in her 30s and the boy was only 13. As the man — Joe — Melton delivers one of the most heartbreaking performances of the year. Robert Downey Jr. delivers a drama acting masterclass in “Oppenheimer,” Ryan Gosling delivers a comedy masterclass in “Barbie,” and...

The 2024 Screen Actors Guild Awards gave us our first true surprises of this year’s awards season. Since it is the first major kudos with five-nominee slots in each category, there was a number of snubs in the acting categories, one of whom was Sandra Hüller for “Anatomy of a Fall,” in a sea of exclusions that included Leonardo DiCaprio (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”), Andrew Scott (“All of Us Strangers”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Rosamund Pike (“Saltburn”), America Ferrera (“Barbie”), and the trio of actors from “May December”: Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore and Charles Melton.
But fear not, they all still have hope yet for receiving recognition from the academy, particularly Hüller, who is the only performance from an international film in the bunch. She plays Sandra Voyter in Justine Triet‘s award-winning film, a woman who tries to...

Javier Bardem and Chloë Sevigny have joined “Monster” Season 2 at Netflix, Variety has learned.
The two A-listers join previously announced stars Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez in the upcoming season of the anthology series, which will focus on the Menéndez brothers. The season is officially titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menéndez Story” and is slated to debut later in 2024.
Erik (Koch) and Lyle Menéndez (Chavez) were convicted of the murders of their parents, José (Bardem) and Mary Louise “Kitty” Menéndez (Sevigny), in 1996. Authorities argued the brothers committed the murders to inherit their father’s fortune, while the brothers maintained that they killed their parents after years of mental and physical abuse.
“Monster” was co-created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. Both serve as executive producers along with Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, David McMillan, Louise Shore, and Carl Franklin. The first season focused on serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.

Exclusive: Amazon MGM’s Head of Specialty Theatrical Distribution, Mark Boxer, was among the notables cuts yesterday at the streaming theatrical studio.
Among some of Boxer’s highlights at Amazon, he oversaw the specialty theatrical releases of such Oscar nominated titles as Being the Ricardos, Poland’s 2018 International film entry Cold War, and 2x Oscar winner Sound of Metal.
With Amazon’s acquisition of MGM, Boxer was a key suit in getting Ben Affleck’s Air into theaters. He was also recently involved in the successful release strategies for awards season titles Saltburn, The Boys in the Boat and American Fiction.
During the pandemic, Boxer also handled the theatrical distribution of such big Prime Video acquisition titles, Coming 2 America, Cinderella, Hotel Transylvania 4, and The Tomorrow War to those cinemas and drive-ins that were lucky to be open.
Boxer also supervised the opening, and operated Amazon’s Culver Theater in Culver City,...

Glenn Close delivered a killer Golden Globes acceptance speech in 2019 when she pulled off an upset in Best Drama Actress by winning for “The Wife.” Lady Gaga was the frontrunner for her performance in “A Star is Born” but it was Close who took to the stage.
We could be in for a similar situation this year as Annette Bening looks to claim a career win of her own. The frontrunner for Best Drama Actress is Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”). Also nominated are Sandra Hüller (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Carey Mulligan (“Maestro”), Greta Lee (“Past Lives”), and Cailee Spaeny (“Priscilla”). Bening’s path to a Golden Globe victory isn’t just merited by her veteran status, however. She also has the backing of the critics.
Richard Lawson (Vanity Fair) opined: “Nyad is played by Annette Bening, who trained for a year to ready herself for the physical demands of the role.

In addition to Hoult and Collette, Gabriel Basso, Zoey Deutch, Leslie Bibb, Chris Messina and Kiefer Sutherland are on the call sheet.
Per the studio’s official logline, the script by Jonathan Abrams follows family man Justin Kemp (Hoult) who, while serving as a juror in a high-profile murder trial, finds himself struggling with a serious moral dilemma … one he could use to sway the jury verdict to potentially convict — or free — the wrong killer.
Simmons will play one of the jurors.
Collette is playing the prosecutor, Basso the accused, and Messina the public defender. Deutch is playing Hoult’s wife, while Sutherland is the lead’s AA sponsor.
On top of directing, Eastwood is producing via his production company Malpaso.
