According to legend, apocryphal or not, the Commissioner of the US Patent Office (of all people) once declared that “everything that can be invented has been invented.” This was in the year 1899 for reference and so, aging like milk under a baking hot sun, his spurious prophecy ended up heralding a century that was defined by its scientific breakthroughs. Indeed, within just a decade of this naysayer’s forecast, our world was introduced to such wonders as the Zeppelin airship, the radio receiver, the vacuum cleaner, color photography, and the Wright Brothers’ biplane.
Of course, this isn’t the only example of predictions proving spectacularly wrong in hindsight. For every uncanny act of augury pulled off by The Simpsons, there’s a prominent banker advising his client not to invest in the Ford Motor Company — on the grounds that “the automobile is only a novelty” — a record label writing off...

“Mars Express” is one of those movies that takes in every aspect of the cyberpunk noir genre and creates a new story while focusing on developing a newer world. It would be a fool’s errand to wonder whether “Mars Express” becomes another touchstone for the cyberpunk genre. Considering the scarcity of movies being tackled in this genre – either live-action or animated – this movie feels like a breath of fresh air.

Factions within fiction, and especially anime, are a household concept. Having a family or team provides anime characters a sense of familiarity and camaraderie, while entire villain organizations, through sheer member size or infamy, carry a visually and aesthetically understandable sense of danger and overwhelming force.
Some anime characters like to go it alone, but plenty of others find strength in numbers, and they will either form or join a faction and get a sense of belonging. Some anime factions are outlaw squads whose members band together for mutual protection, while others are official organizations or even military units complete with their own uniforms and hierarchy. Many anime fans would like to meet some of the most powerful, interesting, and popular factions in anime and see what they stand for.

The pun-packed, Arnie-starring original that strayed wildly from Stephen King’s book is one trashy 80s sci-fi romp that could actually benefit from a remake
Why bother remaking much-loved 80s and 90s science fiction movies? Frankly it never ends well. Len Wiseman’s 2012 reworking of Total Recall, with a baffled-looking Colin Farrell taking over from Arnold Schwarzenegger as the amnesiac dreamer of futuristic secret agent dreams, struggled to capture the bombast of the superbly trashy Paul Verhoeven original, and never even made it to mutant-heavy Mars. The maverick Dutch director’s 1987 version of RoboCop is a gloriously effective corporate satire masquerading as an all-guns-blazing actioner, but its 2014 remake from José Padilha (despite a stellar cast) seemed to smooth off all those rough, wonderfully stop-motion fuelled sci-fi edges and somehow lose something in the process.
How, then, should we greet the news that another of Arnie’s nutty sci-fi romps, 1987’s The Running Man,...

Struggling to recall the last time the internet seemed like a force for good in the world? Yancey Strickler can cite the exact date: March 13, 2013.
That’s the day that Kickstarter’s co-founder and former CEO Strickler and writer/director Rob Thomas launched the “Veronica Mars” Movie Project on the then-four-year-old crowdfunding platform. Within 11 hours, tens of thousands of “Veronica Mars” fans opened their wallets to quickly hit the $2 million goal to bring Thomas’ low-rated high school detective series starring Kristen Bell as the eponymous teen gumshoe back from the TV graveyard as a feature film, which opened in theaters 10 years ago on March 14, 2014.
“It was just love — that’s what it felt like,” Strickler told IndieWire about being in the room with Thomas when the “Veronica Mars” campaign launched, and the fan-raised funds rolled in en masse. “There was a documentary crew there filming; the cast kept calling us,...

Alien invaders are one of the most common stories told in the science fiction genre. Sci-fi movies have played on this theme from the beginning with terrifying tales of alien invaders and UFO attacks. Much of the sci-fi output of the 1950s was mainly focused on alien invaders as an analogy for the "Red Scare" and the fear of communism "invading."
Even in a post-Cold War world, invaders from outer space make great movie villains because people still have a fear of the unknown. Despite the overwhelming improbability of an alien race reaching Earth to conquer or destroy it, it is an entirely plausible apocalypse for audiences. Some of the greatest sci-fi movies involve extraterrestrial visitors, and among them are the elite film alien invaders.

"For All Mankind" has not yet been renewed for a fifth season, leaving fans in anticipation. The season 4 finale hints at a hopeful future for the Mars program, leaving audiences curious about what's to come. "Constellation," a sci-fi psychological thriller, is set to premiere on Apple TV+ and could serve as the perfect replacement for "For All Mankind" during its hiatus.
The For All Mankind season 4 finale aired in January 2024, and during the television show's hiatus, fans can watch another science fiction series to fill the For All Mankind-sized hole in their hearts. The Apple TV+ science fiction drama was created by Ronald D. Moore and premiered in November 2019. While season 1 received average reviews from critics, season 2 is when the show truly kicked off, resulting in a staggering amount of positive critiques. It's rare for a series to get better instead of worse as time continues, but the science fiction drama has proved it's possible.

There are probably countless ways to tell a story. The most common one is going from point A to point B, where A is the beginning and B is the ending. Then there are times when you’re dropped in the middle of a story that keeps going back and forth. And then, there are stories like Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project, which don’t follow any particular structure. That makes perfect sense, as for someone like Giovanni, it’s rather impossible to make a straightforward biopic that starts with childhood and ends at the twilight age. It would also be quite pointless, as it clearly wouldn’t justify her socio-political impact on American culture. The director duo of Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson certainly gets all that, which is pretty evident from their HBO documentary titled Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project. It wouldn’t be...

Jared Leto risked his life Thursday morning by climbing the upper levels of the Empire State Building in order to… umm… promote 30 Seconds to Mars’ upcoming tour.
With the feat, the actor-singer became the first person to legally scale the Manhattan landmark, although his climb began on the 86th floor and concluded on the 104th floor, a mere 1,300 feet off the ground.
“I was more excited than nervous to tell you the truth,” Leto told Today after the stunt. “But I have to be honest, it was very, very hard.

The Pre Astyanax IV is a brand-new Legendary Solar Bow in Destiny 2 introduced in Season of the Witch. This weapon comes with a Precision Frame, meaning it has a longer draw time and is optimized for damage. While drawn, Guardians can cancel a shot by this Compound Bow by pressing Reload. Pre Astyanax IV is great for both PvE and PvP content. The large Perk pool allows Guardians to challenge any activity.
The Pre Astyanax IV drops from the Heist Battleground: Mars in the Vanguard Nightfall playlist. This activity was originally released in Season of the Chosen in Destiny 2. Higher difficulty will increase the chances of obtaining the desired weapon. During a normal Nightfall, the Pre Astyanax IV is not guaranteed in the final reward chest. Defeating champions adds to the fireteam's score, giving a rank at the end of the activity. Guardians should take advantage of the weeks with...

The upcoming Paramount Pictures movie If, starring Ryan Reynolds and John Krasinski, has moved up its release date by a week and will now premiere on May 17, 2024.
Per ComicBook, If was initially scheduled to debut on May 24, which would have seen the movie premiere alongside Paramount's as-yet-untitled SpongeBob SquarePants sequel. The move should bolster the movie's box office prospects as it no longer has to face friendly fire from the SpongeBob film, which changed its original date to become a holiday 2024 release. Paramount's release schedule reshuffle is part of the studio's strategy to mitigate the effects of the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

Stormtroopers were Star Wars' version of redshirts for a long time -- punchlines who evolved into sincere but incompetent working joes. Star Wars has brilliantly explained their deterioration as a reflection of the Empire's corruption and incompetence. Using just the costume design and a few precious moments of screentime, Ahsoka makes them a force to be reckoned with again.
The following contains spoilers for Ahsoka Episode 6, "Part Six: Far, Far Away," streaming now on Disney+.
For a long time, the Stormtroopers were Star Wars' running joke. The Empire's hired goons have a tendency to do what hired goons always do: get thumped by the heroes en masse. After a brief bout of competency in the opening of Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope, they slip into expected form to the point where they -- and the Empire itself -- are undone by a tribe of teddy bears with pointy sticks.

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith was challenged to play drums to a song he never heard before as he listened to it for the first time, and he absolutely crushed it. The song was the Thirty Seconds to Mars hit “The Kill,” which he guessed was “My Chemical Romance or something” right after playing along to it.
The challenge was presented by Drumeo as part of its “For the First Time” series. After some banter between Smith and the series’ hosts, Smith listened to the song’s quiet opening verse before pounding away to the heavy chorus. From there, he played absolutely killer drums for the rest of the song, almost instinctively knowing what was coming next.
When it was all said and done, Smith exclaimed, “What the fuck was that? Is that like My Chemical Romance or something?” When the host asked him if he knew the song,...

NASA’s oxygen-generating experiment that accompanied the Perseverance rover has successfully completed its mission on Mars, and may enable future astronauts landing on the Red Planet to produce oxygen for fuel and breathing, the agency has announced.
Developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a microwave-oven-size device called Moxie (Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilisation Experiment), has generated oxygen for the 16th and final time aboard Perseverance rover.
“Moxie’s impressive performance shows that it is feasible to extract oxygen from Mars’ atmosphere — oxygen that could help supply breathable air or rocket propellant to future astronauts,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Pam Melroy, in a statement.
“Developing technologies that let us use resources on the Moon and Mars is critical to build a long-term lunar presence, create a robust lunar economy, and allow us to support an initial human exploration campaign to Mars,” Melroy added.

Green Lantern is one of the most popular DC heroes of all time. Unlike Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman, which tend to be associated with one particular character, Green Lantern is a title that has been passed on by many different characters. Since the concept was introduced in 1940, DC Comics has had eight different heroes hold the title of Green Lantern. That also meant the character has been in high demand for adaptation.
The character spent years in development hell and was finally brought to live-action in 2011 in the film Green Lantern, where Ryan Reynolds played the title role. The movie was a box office and critical bomb, and Warner Bros. scrapped plans for the sequel. The brand was damaged to the point the character, who has been an important part of the foundation of the Justice League, was not included in their feature film debut and was planned for a sequel instead.

The brand was damaged to the point the character, who has been an important part of the foundation of the Justice League, was not included in their feature film debut and was planned for a sequel instead.

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon draws inspiration from various sci-fi and fantasy franchises, showcasing a mish-mash of ideas and styles. Despite initially envisioning it as a Star Wars movie, Snyder's decision to create his own universe allows for more freedom and world-building. Influences from Warhammer 40k, Dune, The Witcher, John Carter of Mars, The Matrix, Princess Mononoke, Firefly, Mortal Kombat, and The Lord of the Rings can be seen in Rebel Moon's aesthetics and narrative elements.
Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon is a rare massive-budget original sci-fi epic to get funding from a modern studio landscape, but it is still taking its influences from many popular sci-fi & fantasy franchises. While Rebel Moon isn't based on a preexisting IP, Snyder is still riffing on tropes and imagery that have been popularized by other films, TV shows, novels, and video games. This is nothing new, as sci-fi artists have been influencing each...

Andrew Legge’s directorial debut Lola treads the line between the pitfalls of invention and the blessings that initially surround the same. One minute, it’s a seemingly ahead-of-its-time musical trying to capture the imperceivable hues of two sisters in the helplessly limited 16mm black and white frames. And in the blink of an eye, the symphony of love transforms into a heated brawl against the war-torn backdrop of a fictional Britain. To plate up something refreshingly original—a film that would’ve been deemed a masterpiece had it been made around the same time as the narrative is set—is an laudable achievement for a debut director who’s evidently in awe of the bleak nuances of time travel.
