The Goonies are officially making a comeback.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that a sequel to the beloved 1985 adventure film is in development, with Potsy Ponciroli set to write the script. The project is moving forward nearly 40 years after the original movie first hit theaters.

Steven Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger, and Holly Bario will be producing for Amblin Entertainment, joined by Chris Columbus, who wrote the original screenplay. Lauren Shuler Donner will serve as an executive producer. At this stage, no director has been announced, and plot details remain under wraps.

The original movie, directed by Richard Donner and produced by Spielberg, followed a group of kids who stumbled upon an ancient treasure map and embarked on a wild adventure to uncover the hidden riches.

Starring Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan, and Martha Plimpton, the film became an instant hit, grossing $125 million worldwide on a $19 million budget.

It may sound like a boy who cried wolf scenario, but it seems "The Goonies 2" is really, truly, actually happening. No, seriously this time! This is a film that has been talked about for literal decades now, with nothing having materialized up to this point. Back to 2014, the late Richard Donner (who directed the original "Goonies") said "Goonies" co-writer and producer Steven Spielberg had written a story for the sequel. Well, now Warner Bros. is getting serious about the project and has hired a new writer to tackle another adventure with Mikey, Chunk, and the rest of the gang. Presumably.

According to Deadline, Potsy Ponciroli has officially come on board to pen "The Goonies 2." Ponciroli is known best as the writer-director of the 2021 Western "Old Henry" starring Tim Blake Nelson. Some of the filmmaker's other credits include the TV series "Still the King" and last year's crime flick "Greedy People.

The Venice Film Festival and Italy’s Mymovies streaming platform have devised what the streamer’s chief Gianluca Guzzo calls “a unique model.”

It’s an SVOD service called Biennale Cinema Channel that offers Italians Lido titles from past editions that never made it into local theaters and in September will also provide them with a selection of world premieres launching from Venice’s upcoming 78th edition.

It all started with Alberto Barbera’s second mandate at Venice 10 years ago, says Guzzo. Barbera wanted to give more visibility to films screening in the Horizons section dedicated to more cutting edge pics, and subsequently also to Biennale College titles, the micro budget works that Venice shepherds from development to distribution.

So Mymovies created a virtual screening room during the Venice fest with access limited to 2,500 spectators that recreated the collective cinema experience one gets in movie theaters.

Exclusive: Hideout Pictures, the financing, developing and producing arm of Nashville-based Average Joes Entertainment, has launched a film fund with the aim of providing equity and gap financing to indie films, and to acquire IP to be developed as TV or film properties.

The fund, backed by private equity, is said to be in the eight-figure range. No other details were available.

Hideout Pictures, which launched in 2014 via co-founder and CEO Shannon Houchins, has provided financing for projects including Kevin Smith’s forthcoming Jay & Silent Bob Reboot, 3022, Ted K starring Sharlto Copley and other pics. Its producing credits include the Cmt series Still the King starring Billy Ray Cyrus, which aired for two seasons.

Update: Actress Lisa Sheridan died as a result of chronic alcoholism, according to a coroner’s report.

The report arrives three months after the 44-year-old actress died in New Orleans. The cause of death was listed on the report as due to “complications of chronic alcoholism” and had suffered a “remote brain injury” from an unspecified fall. She also had hyperinflated lungs.

Earlier: Lisa Sheridan, who had roles in the television series Invasion and Halt and Catch Fire, died Monday of as-yet-unknown causes. She was 44.

Sheridan’s manager, Mitch Clem, confirmed the death to Deadline Wednesday evening.

“Lisa passed away on Monday morning. She was at home in New Orleans. Cause of death is not known at this time. We are waiting for the coroners,” Clem said in a statement. “Obviously, we were all blindsided with this devastating loss. Lisa was deeply loved. We are heartbroken.”

Veteran director Tamra Davis will helm Fox’s female engineer comedy “Turned On.”

Paul Feig and Jessie Henderson are producing for Feigco Entertainment, where 20th Century Fox has been developing the script for the past two years. The studio bought the script in 2016 from Charlie Kesslering, an assistant to “The Late Late Show” host James Corden, about a socially awkward engineer who creates an android to fill in for her. The scheme backfires when robot becomes self-actualized.

Davis broke into show business in 1986 as the director of music videos for N.W.A, Sonic Youth, the Beastie Boys and Black Flag. She began directing feature films with 1992’s “Guncrazy,” followed by “Billy Madison,” “Half Baked,” and “Crossroads.” Davis also has multiple TV credits including “Still the King,” “Younger,” “My Name Is Earl,” and “Everybody Hates Chris.”

Austin, who has had roles in Live By Night and I.T., stars opposite Billy Ray Cyrus in a sneak peek of the episode, where he shuts down Vernon's plans to play the venue.

The year 2016 already was was supposed to be a big for Cmt, highlighted by a major push into original scripted series with comedy Still The King, starring Billy Ray Cyrus, which just launched to solid ratings, and 1950s Memphis drama Million Dollar Quartet, which premieres this fall. Cmt’s scripted footprint grew dramatically overnight as the network recently picked up country music drama Nashville following its cancellation by ABC for a 22-episode fifth season. Deadline…...
