In modern-day genre filmmaking, there’s always a pinnacle for all sorts of things. For example, in folk horror, Robert Eggers’ The Witch (2015) is considered the holy grail. Similarly, when it comes to AI robot stories, Alex Garland’s Ex Machina (2013) has become quite the cult hit now. Sure, there are shows like Humans or Black Mirror (I’m specifically referring to the episode Be Right Back here), but the Garland movie is the one that has inspired many similar things afterwards. The reason I brought this up here is that the central idea of Black Eyed Susan seems to come straight from Ex Machina. Yet, it stands on its own simply because it is quite well made in every possible way—the writing is solid, the direction is good, and the acting is on point. However, what elevates the whole thing into a complete experience is the rawness it brings to the table.

With Black Doves, The Day of the Jackal and The Agency all hitting TV screens in the space of a few weeks, premium spy shows feel in vogue.
Jane Featherstone and Joe Barton concur. They are the producer and creator behind Netflix’s Black Doves, which stars Keira Knightley and Ben Whishaw as agents who operate amid a whirlwind of secrets.
“It’s back,” Featherstone told Deadline. “Everyone’s making ’em. The world is in a place where you need spies because there are so many barriers and nation state issues it just feels like the time.”
Featherstone, who runs Black Doves maker Sister, said these trends come in circa-25-year cycles, citing Spooks, the hit BBC series she produced in the 2000s. She said she is “definitely” being pitched more spy shows at present but there is room for plenty. Black Doves had a two-season order before it even premiered,...

Big Thief have shared a remastered reissue of their 2016 debut album Masterpiece, out now via 4Ad.
When Big Thief released Masterpiece in 2016, they seemingly became indie rock royalty overnight. The Brooklyn-based band recorded the album in July 2015 at a makeshift studio in an old lakehouse with producer Andrew Sarlo and engineer James Krivchenia, the latter of whom would go on to become Big Thief’s full-time drummer.
Though its title could be used to describe the quality of the record itself, vocalist Adrianne Lenker says Masterpiece refers to “the masterpiece of existence, which is always folding into itself, people attempting to connect, to both shake themselves awake and to shake off the numbness of certain points in their life. The interpretations might be impressionistic or surrealistic, but they’re grounded in simple things.”
In additional Big Thief news, the band has also unveiled an official karaoke YouTube channel so that...

Unveiling a raft of international shows at Mipcom, Newen Connect’s managing director Rodolphe Buet said the distribution arm of the TF1-owned company is seeing its business model go through “drastic changes” as it now plays a more central role in financing content.
In the next two years, Buet said roughly 70% of Newen Connect’s revenues will stem from content it pre-finances and/or co-produces, rather than licensing deals.
“We use to be gap deficit-ers, bringing minimum guarantees against rights for international. We’re now at the center of the equation, co-producing or co-financing to speed up the process of production,” said Buet, citing collaborations with in-house and third-party producers, alongside ongoing partnerships with TF1, Sweden’s TV4 and CMore, Germany’s Zdf and Amazon, among others.

When Croatian-born TV exec Sanja Božić-Ljubičić set out to establish a television market in her corner of the world a decade ago, she had always felt the Balkan region had been overlooked on the global content map.
“The Balkan region was always somewhat neglected,” she tells Deadline. “But Croatia always seemed like a romantic little resort” which she thought would be an “ideal location for a boutique event” for top global executives.
Indeed, the romantic and picturesque country, which lies entirely on the Adriatic Sea and was the first of the former Yugoslavia countries to join the European Union, is a beautiful setting. But crucially, says Božić-Ljubičić, who also runs local pay-tv and SVoD service Pickbox as well as media service provider Mediatranslations, she felt she was well-placed to create something that would align foreign industry professionals with local talent.

The UK owes many of its proudest creations to other countries. Our national dish is chicken tikka masala, the Romans gave us everything from plumbing to underfloor heating, and let’s not even get started on the Royal family.
So it should come as no surprise that some top UK TV shows are based on original series from around the world. Some of these are obvious, like Drag Race UK and Law & Order being imported from the US, or The Masked Singer originating in South Korea, but some UK remakes are less up front about their international origins.
Hullraisers
Lucy Beaumont developed this Hull-based sitcom about the lives of three hilarious, bawdy and chaotic women, which debuted on Channel 4 in spring 2022 and has already been commissioned for a second series. But despite being a gorgeous and all-too-rare depiction of working-class British wit, Hullraisers is actually based on an Israeli sitcom called Little Mom,...

In the new documentary Good Night Oppy, the Mars Opportunity rover becomes the scrappy robot that could: an instrument platform that trundles across a rusty landscape millions of miles away, searching for alien life signs, and outlasts its own projected existence by almost 15 years.
But none of the affection that audiences feel for this unsinkable machine would exist if not for Opportunity’s people — “our human-being characters,” as director Ryan White fondly called the celebrated mission’s engineers, scientists and programmers. Without them, “it is just a box of bolts and wires,” he said at Deadline’s Contenders Documentary event that also featured the film’s Oscar-winning sound designer, Mark Mangini, and Emmy-winning composer, Blake Neely.

Immaculately coiffed women in flirty ‘50s frocks wave their handsome husbands goodbye as the men drive off to work in their color-coordinated cars. The women then retreat back to their stylish and spacious show homes with a skip and a song to clean and cook, or sometimes they meet the other gals to shop or lounge by the pool in the sun. It’s heaven. It’s utopia. It’s obviously not real.

Exclusive: Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds), Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix franchise), Isabelle Fuhrman (The Novice) and Liana Liberato (To the Bone) have signed on to star in Justine Bateman’s upcoming feature Face, based on her 2021 bestseller, Face: One Square Foot of Skin.
The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.
Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

Everything is wrong in The Humans, Stephen Karam’s adaptation of his Tony-winning play. Set entirely in a New York apartment building, Karam’s one-act play transitions to film with one big hook: it’s an intimate drama conceived as a horror film, monsters and ghosts replaced by the rot of a family unit shaken up by a world that’s getting harder to endure. It’s Thanksgiving, and young couple Bridgid (Beanie Feldstein) and Richard (Steven Yeun) are moving into their new Chinatown apartment with the help of Bridgid’s family: parents Erik (Richard Jenkins) and Deirdre (Jayne Houdyshell), sister Aimee (Amy Schumer), and Alzheimer’s-afflicted grandmother Fiona (June Squibb). All seems well and friendly between everyone, but as the day goes on and dinner approaches, cracks begin showing—past resentments, unresolved...
