Norman Spencer, the British producer, production manager and screenwriter who worked alongside famed director David Lean on films including Blithe Spirit, Great Expectations, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Lawrence of Arabia, has died. He was 110.

Spencer died Aug. 16 in Wimbledon three days after his birthday, the European Supercentenarian Organisation announced.

Apart from Lean, Spencer produced Joseph L. Mankiewicz’s Suddenly, Last Summer (1959), starring Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Katharine Hepburn; Richard C. Sarafian’s Vanishing Point (1971), the car chase movie that starred Barry Newman; and Richard Attenborough’s Cry Freedom (1987), starring Denzel Washington.

Spencer was Lean’s unit manager on the ghost comedy Blithe Spirit (1945), based on the Noël Coward play, and served as his production manager on his adaptations of Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations (1946) and Oliver Twist (1948).

Will Smith got the crowd at Peacock’s Summer BBQ, in celebration of Bel-Air‘s season 3 premiere, in the summertime mood with a surprise performance.

At the event held at the Universal Studios Backlot in Los Angeles on Thursday, Bel-Air star Coco Jones took the stage, performing her new song, “Here We Go.” She then invited Smith, who serves as an executive producer on the drama reimagining of his hit ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, onstage for a duet of his 1991 hit, “Summertime.”

“Come on, come on, sing!,” exclaimed Smith on the mic during Jones’ vocals, with fans gleefully complying and taking out their phones to record the special moment. Following the performance, the cast took the stage to preview season 3 and share some of their memories from bonding on set.

By all accounts, NBC Chicago’s A Very Chicago New Year broadcast was a bizarre watch, thanks in no small part to Billy Corgan. Not only did he make the contrarian choice of singing “Summertime” in the middle of winter, but he also performed a whimsical new song inspired by Windy City children’s TV staple Wizzo the Wizard.

While appearing on the broadcast live from his tea house Madame Zuzu’s, the tuxedoed Smashing Pumpkins frontman debuted “Wizzo” while accompanied by the costumed son of the late Marshall Brodien, who plays the current iteration of Bozo the Clown’s sidekick.

Co-produced by Mitchell along with fellow Newport performer Brandi Carlile, the album features 12 live recordings. Throughout the performance, Mitchell and Carlile were accompanied by artists including Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes. The setlist includes Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.”

Not only was Mitchell’s Newport set her first live performance in over 20 years, but it also marked a rare public appearance since she suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015. The Twilight Singers have announced a definitive box set titled Black Out the Windows/Ladies and Gentlemen, The Twilight Singers, out in October via One Little Independent Records. In addition to newly remastered versions of the Greg Dulli-led band’s studio releases, it contains an LP of rare and previously unreleased material.

The 13-piece (six 2xLP and one EP) box set was pressed onto 180g crystal clear vinyl housed in reimagined white embossed album sleeves. It contains remasterings of the studio albums Twilight as Played by The Twilight Singers, Blackberry Belle, She Loves You, Powder Burns, and Dynamite Steps as well as the 2006 EP A Stitch in Time. The 79-year-old singer-songwriter initially made her return to the stage in August 2022 during a surprise appearance at the Newport Folk Festival. She subsequently announced a standalone headlining show as part of Brandi Carlile’s three-night concert event “Echoes Through the Canyon.”

After a nearly two-year gap between 2021's "Pretty & Paid 2.0" and her new six-track project, released May 12, the rising rapper tells Popsugar why she took her time crafting "Paptivities" - and why the EP sounds vastly different from her previous releases. Joni Mitchell has officially announced At Newport, a live album immortalizing her surprise appearance at the 2022 Newport Folk Festival. The project arrives on streaming services, CD, and 2xLP on July 28th.

Mitchell’s first live performance in 20 years came during Brandi Carlile’s set at the festival, so it’s only fair that Carlile would co-produce the live album with Mitchell herself. Phil and Tim Hanseroth, Wynonna Judd, Marcus Mumford, Celisse, Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius, and Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes also performed with the artists during the set, which featured Mitchell classics like “Big Yellow Taxi,” “A Case Of You,” and “Both Sides Now.” Mitchell even performed a solo instrumental version of “Just Like This Train” on guitar.

It’s beyond obvious that women deserve a movie that portrays and celebrates them in their sixties and seventies reveling in the joys of romantic adventure and uninhibited sex. It’s not so obvious that they deserved “Book Club,” the 2018 comedy about four hale, hearty, and prosperous senior friends who read “Fifty Shades of Grey” in their monthly literary white-wine klatsch, only to discover that E.L. James’s S&m princess fantasy jump-starts their hibernating libidos and/or their desire to commit to the men who are courting them. You could use a whole Thesaurus paragraph of withering descriptives to evoke the sort of movie “Book Club” was. It was prefab, it was cookie-cutter, it was paint-by-numbers, it was broad enough to play to the peanut gallery, it was four glorified sitcoms jammed into one overly synthetic package.

And yet…the movie, in its story-parts-falling-into-place-far-too-neatly “Look how bawdy we’re being!

Before Bobbie Nelson passed away in March 2022, longtime fan Amanda Shires recruited her to collaborate on the upcoming album Loving You. Ahead of its release on June 23rd via Silver Knife/Ato, Shires has shared their spin on George Gershwin’s “Summertime,” featuring none other than Nelson’s brother Willie Nelson.

Loving You comprises 10 beloved classic tunes reimagined by Shires and Nelson, including “Dream a Little Dream of Me,” “Over the Rainbow,” and of course, “Loving You.” Recorded in Austin, the record is billed as Shires’ “mission to pay respect to the only woman she saw working in a band and pursuing a career as a sideman.”

Wattpad Webtoon Studios, the entertainment arm of the user-generated fiction and comics entertainment outfit, and Italy’s Leone Film Group have announced two new adaptations based on hit young-adult Wattpad novels.

Taiwan-based author Ann Rae’s romantic mystery “The Locker Exchange,” which is set in a U.S. high school and has over 26 million reads globally on the Wattpad platform, is set to become an English and Italian-language feature film. And “Love Me, Love Me” by Italian writer Stefania S, which has scored 12 million reads in Italy, is to be adapted into an Italian-language series by Leone’s Lotus Production unit.
