With founders Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, masterminds of such low-budget horror as “Resolution,” “Spring,” and “The Endless,” now entrenched in the Marvel machine, their Rustic Films is calling in the reserves. “Descendent” writer/director Peter Cilella has been involved with multiple Rustic productions as an actor, going all the way back to “Resolution” in 2012. Now, he’s the latest member of the Los Angeles-based production company’s roster — he’s preceded by Michael Felker, whose “Things Will Be Different” debuted under the Rustic banner last year — to get his turn in the big chair, so to speak.
At the film’s SXSW premiere, Cilella described his feature directorial debut as being about “depression, anxiety, and aliens.” And the film’s priorities do unfold in that order. There’s also some soul-searching about what it means to be a man in contemporary America, a topic that’s too often hijacked...

‘Descendent’ – Rlje Picks Up ‘Fire in the Sky’ Style Alien Thriller from Producers Benson & Moorhead

Ahead of the film’s premiere at SXSW (stay tuned for Bloody Disgusting’s coverage!), Variety reports that the close encounter thriller Descendent has been acquired by Rlje Films.
Produced by Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, Descendent will be released in U.S. theaters by Rlje Films later this year.
The film follows Sean Bruner, a man racked by trauma as the birth of his first child approaches. Discovering a mysterious beam of light during a graveyard shift, Bruner reawakens with visions of extraterrestrials and a slippery sense of reality.
Ross Marquand (“The Walking Dead”) and Sarah Bolger (“Mayans M.C.”) star.
“This film was a labor of love, and I could not be more thrilled to partner with Rlje Films to bring Descendent to SXSW and beyond,” writer and director Peter Cilella said in a statement shared by Variety ahead of SXSW this week. “It truly takes a village to...

Note: This story contains spoilers from “Daredevil: Born Again” Episode 1.
It’s not a proper season of “Daredevil” without a big one-take fight scene — from the iconic Season 1 hallway fight that started it all to the staggering 10-minute Season 3 prison escape set-piece, “Daredevil” has always put a premium on shooting the hell out of a fantastic fight.
Naturally, “Daredevil: Born Again” had to fulfill that promise, and the newly revived series doesn’t waste any time, delivering a big one-er during the pivotal 16-minute opening sequence that sets up the entire season. Directors and executive producers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who helmed the first and final episodes of “Born Again” Season 1, told TheWrap that their personal style “weirdly jived pretty instantly” and celebrated the “creative freedom” offered to “be bold and to try to continue that tradition from the Netflix show of extremely bold visuals, bold lighting,” and “oners that seemed completely impossible.

Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson burst onto the indie festival scene over 10 years ago with their special brand of genre-bending, mind-defying horror films, including The Endless, Synchronic, and Something In The Dirt. These unique films cleared the path for Moorhead and Benson to lock the deal with Marvel, soon directing hit series Loki, Moon Knight, and now Daredevil: Born Again, the wildly anticipated return of Hell’s Kitchen's favorite lawyer.

Now updated for February 2025, here’s our pick of 35 genre films – horror, action, sci-fi and more – you can watch for free on Tubi UK.
Like any streaming service, particularly of the ad-supported variety, there’s a lot of filler on Tubi, the subscription-free platform which recently made its debut in the UK.
On there you’ll find an array of low-budget documentaries of spurious quality, landfill reality TV and how-did-this-get-made TV movies (Amish Abduction).
Look beyond those films, though, and Tubi is positively stuffed with genre and cult offerings – sci-fi, horror, comedy, martial arts, thrillers and more besides. Finding these can take a bit of hunting around, however, so to save you a bit of time, we’ve done some hunting for you. We’re nice like that.

The hallmark of Lovecraftian horror is a rare combination of science fiction, mysterious deities, and horror in a cosmic medium. Renowned author H.P. Lovecraft was the master of the subgenre, and he would be proud to have his name attached to 2017's worldwide film festival darling The Endless, directed by the dynamic duo of Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead. The pair has experience in various genres, including action and drama, and has directed episodes of Moon Knight, Loki, and Daredevil: Born Again. However, in The Endless, they work both sides of the camera as directors and as the two leads in a film that remarkably subverts the traditional sinister cult trope. Cult film classics like Rosemary's Baby and A24's Midsommar will always have their place, but what is so refreshing about The Endless is that it uses its low budget as a strength and has to rely on different...

Has there been a more unlikely series of horror films than the V/H/S franchise? By the very nature of the sub-genre, anthology films don’t typically lend themselves to being series as even the segments within their own movies are almost always unrelated. Sure, TV has found a way to make it work in things like American Horror Story from Ryan Murphy or the criminally underrated Channel Zero that ran 4 seasons. Side note, if you have Shudder, please go check out Channel Zero. There are exceptions of course with The ABCs of Death or the Creepshow series but most of them are one and done. You also have nonrelated ones that use the same actors and directors like the wonderful things Amicus films was doing opposite Hammer in the 60s and 70s but again, these weren’t sequels at all. V/H/S has defied all odds and with a new film having just been released,...

The exciting sci-fi horror Things Will Be Different, from director Michael Felker, is set to arrive on Blu-ray and Digital Download on 18th November. Distributed by Lightbulb Film Distribution, this dark, time-bending thriller brings a unique twist to the genre and is already making waves following its successful UK theatrical release. Fans of high-concept, lo-fi time travel stories have been urged to take notice, with Macabre Daily describing the film as “the lo-fi, high-concept time travel movie you should see now.”
From the creators behind hits like Loki and The Endless, Things Will Be Different stars Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy as estranged siblings who reunite after a botched robbery. Laying low at an abandoned farmhouse, they encounter a mysterious force that pushes them into a mind-bending journey, questioning their reality and their very existence. The notion of being “stuck in the past” applies both literally and figuratively to the siblings with a shared troubled history in “Things Will Be Different,” the feature directorial debut of editor Michael Felker. The title of this proficiently tense, lo-fi time-travel crime thriller reads like a promise of change, of overcoming past mistakes with the hope of an improved future. And it’s around that human need for second chances, to amend, that the filmmaker wraps his science-fiction proposition for what’s mostly an engaging two-hander.
In the aftermath of a robbery — not their first illicit act — Joseph (Adam David Thompson) and Sidney (Riley Dandy), an estranged brother and sister, head to an isolated farmhouse where old manual clocks and a seemingly ordinary closet allow them to travel back in time. If they wait a couple weeks before returning to their own timeline (which Sydney must do to care...

An estranged brother and sister reunite while hiding from the police in a remote barn that holds a secret procedure to transport people into the future
Writer-director Michael Felker makes his feature debut with this trudgingly downbeat sci-fi, an uncanny-realist time travel movie about a couple of criminals hiding out in the future; it’s a little in the style of Shane Carruth’s Primer or Rian Johnson’s Looper – though without the thrills, and without the cerebral frissons and ingenious plot contrivances where those thrills would otherwise go. It is produced by film-makers Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who established a kind of authorial stamp on this kind of indie hipster-cosmic fantasy with their own (more interesting) film The Endless.

Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, sees a pair of siblings on the lam get caught up in a twisty sci-fi puzzle box thriller. Today brings the first trailer and a poster the highlights the genre-bending mysteries ahead.
Magnet Releasing has set a theatrical day-and-date release for Things Will Be Different on October 4, 2024.
The film follows “estranged siblings who, after a robbery, escape to a rural safe house hidden in time and discover they’re not the only occupants.”
“I made Things Will Be Different for people who love thrillers, noir, and science fiction they can think about. It’s a giant mystery box of a movie with a strong familial core that’s inspired by my own family. Adam David Thompson and Riley Dandy are just incredible as Joe and Sid, and I can’t believe they aren’t actually brother and sister.

The first "V/H/S" movie was released in 2012, which was actually four full years before the last manufacturers of VCRs, Funai Electric, finally halted production on the medium.
VHS was, for those of a certain age, a seminal and ubiquitous technology. Prior to VHS, the only way to see certain cinematic classics was either to go to a repertory theater (which used to be far more common) and see it on the big screen (requiring a well-curated arthouse in your town) or to wait for something to broadcast on network TV (which was often edited for content or time). With the advent of VHS, movies were on-demand for the first time. One could rent their movies from a local video store and watch them at their leisure. Disney has now halted development on the upcoming movie adaptation of the young adult novel The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. The decision comes following the recent allegations of sexual assault that were recently made against Gaiman, with insiders telling IndieWire that the movie has not been scrapped but multiple factors, including the allegations, contributed to putting it on hold. Director Marc Forster, who is best known for the likes of Quantum of Solace, Monster's Ball, World War Z, and Christopher Robin, was attached to direct the project. No cast had yet been announced, and Neil Gaiman had no involvement in the adaptation. However, it seems that having his name attached was reason enough to put the project on pause.

A new sci-fi slasher horror outing from Netflix could make for the perfect viewing this spooky season. The streaming giant has now announced that the horror flick, titled Time Cut, will land on the platform just in time for Halloween on October 30, 2024, with the story mashing together the time travel shenanigans of Back to the Future with the slasher frights of Scream for a terrifying, timey-wimey delight.

James Wan's upcoming horror movie project is exciting, but I am even more hyped for the next installment of an acclaimed Lovecraftian shared universe. Although most details remain unknown, James Wan is reportedly working on an adaptation of Hp Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu. Even though directly adapting Lovecraftian tales to the big screen is no easy feat, James Wan's long line of success with horror movies makes me believe he might deliver something exceptional.
Although the film is still in the early stages of development, James Wan has teased that it is more of a passion project, and he already expects it to be a hard sell. Given how well-made cosmic horror movies like Alex Garland's Annihilation and John Carpenter's In the Mouth of Madness are hard to sell and rarely perform well at the box office, I am glad James Wan is focusing less on...

John Constantine faces his biggest fear - Death of the Endless - in John Constantine, Hellblazer: Dead in America #11. Throughout his life, Constantine has avoided death at all costs, but now he must confront it head-on. When it comes to meta experiments that blur those good ole lines between fiction and the filmmakers’ own non-fiction life stories, there’s a risk that the resulting feature can border on being impenetrable if audiences aren’t fed a load of exposition in advance. That’s far less of an issue for classically-told narratives from mega-famous artists delving into (semi)autobiography (like Steven Spielberg with “The Fabelmans”), but definitely so for smaller scale projects from independent filmmakers whose output is more peculiar. What can be a compelling behind-the-scenes story as described in a press kit may not necessarily translate into the finished feature as something engaging, or even coherent, to anyone coming to the work without the luxury of reading production notes before the screening.

Following the FBI as they track down a mysterious serial killer, Longlegs is a refreshingly atmospheric and ominous film that stands out in the current landscape of jumpscare-heavy but otherwise lackluster horror features and seemingly endless reboots of old classics.
With a heavy-hitting cast led by Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, Longlegs is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics' score of 85%. Judging by its widely successful release and positive reviews, it's clear that Longlegs captures the essence of horror that audiences want. For those craving a horror-thriller flick that captures the same eerie vibe, there are plenty of titles that match this deliciously unsettling atmosphere.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe aka the MCU is getting ready for what is supposed to be one of the biggest comic book events of all time, Avengers: Secret Wars. But before it, to set the stage for the enticing event to take place in Avengers 5, which was previously titled ‘The Kang Dynasty’.

Seeing the ‘success’ of recent MCU movies and projects, Marvel Studios has undeniably a lot of pressure to get things done right. Good thing The Dreaming is an endless expanse, because The Sandman Season 2 is starting to get a lot more crowded.
Game of Thrones‘ Jack Gleeson will join Netflix’s fantasy series for its sophomore run, TVLine has learned. He’ll play Puck, who is described as “a malevolent hobgoblin who serves as the royal jester to King Auberon of Faerie. Puck is fascinated by mortals and enjoys nothing more than making sport of them for his own amusement. He’s also the inspiration for Shakespeare’s Puck in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Wan's Lovecraft adaptation faces tough competition from Dredge's more indirect approach to cosmic horror storytelling. The success of films like Color Out of Space shows that a modern take on Lovecraftian themes can be more commercially successful. Wan's The Call of Cthulhu could benefit from taking notes from Dredge and Color Out of Space by adding a contemporary spin to the original tale.
James Wan's upcoming Lovecraft movie already seems to be facing some rivalry from another horror adaptation. Given how James Wan's long line of work as a filmmaker primarily includes mainstream films like Furiosa 7, The Conjuring, Aquaman, and Insidious, it is interesting how the director is now pursuing a passion project by adapting Hp Lovecraft's The Call of Cthulhu instead of solely focusing on mass appeal. Although Mark Duplass' initial comments about Creep 3 raised doubts surrounding the film franchise's future, Creep 2 is finally getting a follow-up show titled The Creep Tales. The Creep Tapes will explore Peachfuzz's murders in half-hour episodes, possibly shedding light on events post-Creep 2's cliffhanger ending.
I was looking forward to the follow-up to this 100% Rotten Tomatoes horror movie, and after years of doubt, I am glad it is finally happening. Since horror movie follow-ups do not always live up to the standards set by their predecessors, I always find myself questioning whether a critically successful horror flick has enough scope for franchise expansion. While some horror follow-ups like James Cameron's Aliens and Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead's The Endless have perfectly expanded their original film's stories, others like Hellraiser: Revelations and Halloween: Resurrection have only worsened my concerns surrounding sequels.

Netflix finally unveiled an official teaser for the second season of The Sandman yesterday, and it featured a first glimpse of Esmé Creed-Miles as Delirium, Adrian Lester as Destiny, and Barry Sloane as The Prodigal.
Though we did get to see Delirium's face, her full visage was somewhat obscured, and this new behind-the-scenes photo gives us a better look at the Hanna star in-costume as the youngers of The Endless.
In Neil Gaiman's comics, Delirium is the current manifestation of the being that started out as Delight. The character is a little... mixed up, but is loyal to her family and proves to be an invaluable ally to Dream during the events of "Brief Lives."

The Endless have assembled!
Netflix has shared a brief teaser for the second season of The Sandman, reintroducing the members of The Endless we met during season 1, Dream, Death, Desire and Despair, while providing our first glimpse of Morpheus' remaining siblings, Destiny, Delirium, and "The Prodigal."
Esmé Creed-Miles will play the youngest of the Endless, Delirium, while Adrian Lester will take on the role of the all-seeing Destiny, and Barry Sloane will play The Prodigal.
Anyone who has read Neil Gaiman's comic series will know who this really is, and while it wouldn't seem like much of a spoiler to reveal the name, it's clearly something the show is choosing to keep under wraps for the time being.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have been specializing in exciting sci-fi horror, starting with their first film, 2012's Resolution. They have since directed five films together, have a segment in the found footage V/H/S franchise, and even directed episodes in the hit Marvel series Moon Knight and Loki. They are now attached to the highly anticipated series, Daredevil: Born Again. While they may be successful in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before that they made their names with some truly horrifying films that brought many so-called "unfilmable" ideas to the screen. Inspired by the cosmic horror that was popularized by fiction writer H.P. Lovecraft and paired with some nightmarish and unexplained imagery that channels David Lynch, the duo gave us 2017's The Endless.

If 2024 is the year American voters will experience a sense of déjà vu at the ballot box, it’s also likely to go down as the year that fans of indie genre cinema will feel it at the box office. From Sundance to SXSW, a surprising number of films have had fun with the concept of time, whether in terms of history literally repeating itself or presenting new angles on the same set of events.
Exec-produced by filmmaker duo Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, and written-directed by their longtime editor Michael Felker, Things Will Be Different — as its title suggests — has an even more rarefied take, using time as a hiding place, a surreal and ingenious conceit that adds a creepy air of mystery to its otherwise solidly sci-fi scenario.

The real story begins long before you know it in Desert Road, a very smart, trippy chiller that plays with the conventions of survival horror and takes them in a wholly unexpected and, ultimately, really quite moving direction. Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...
