The director said when Garrett Hedlund dropped out three weeks before shooting began, he was given a list of six actors he could potentially choose from, three he dropped immediately. He went on to choose Skarsgard because of a YouTube video he saw of him drunk at a football match, in which he's trying to whip the rest of the crowd in a frenzy as he thought they were being too quiet. He thought this made him perfect for the role of Terry.
Even though Alexander Skarsgård plays an ordinary cop in this film, he anachronistically sports a highly sculpted physique with rippling eight-pack abs. Skarsgard said that it was completely unintentional and not how the character was written. The reason was that he came to set directly after finishing The Legend of Tarzan (2016) and did not have enough time to get rid of his abs even though he had stopped working out and dieting.
The quotation, "All oppression creates a state of war," is by Simone de Beauvoir, from The Second Sex (1949), her most famous work.
Filmed in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
When Terry is looking through Jackie's photos of ex-boyfriends, the first picture is that of Martin McDonagh, the brother of the film's director John Michael McDonagh.
