Cannes — There’s a scene in “Bayoneta,” Mexican Kyzza Terrazas’ second fiction feature, where Miguel, played by “Club of Crows’” Luis Gerardo Méndez, is asked to sing a song. He does so, Chalino Sanchez’s “Nieves de enero,” a lovely spare ballad about heartbreak. Miguel knows something about that sentiment. An up-and-coming Mexican boxer, a Sydney Olympics medal winner who floors “Matador” Madrigal Ríos, Tijuana’s Miguel “Bayoneta” Galíndez’s prospects look bright until he kills his opponent in the ring.
Looking for atonement, even punishment and out of a sense of shame – as a father, he can’t look his daughter in the eye after failing in basic human ethics – he seeks exile in the snowy wastes of Tirku, a town in Finland, where he trains boxers. “Bayoneta” is a film about immigration, but for emotional need, not economic necessity. Picturing training as relief for Miguel, framing an affair...

Follow a long strip of one-lane blacktop through the woods off New York State Route 28 and you’ll find a spooky old estate called Big Indian Springs. A 20-bedroom Victorian hall perched on 37 acres of rolling Catskill foothills, it was once a summer camp for young women who worked in garment factories; now it’s an Airbnb. With faded portraits lining the walls and spiders and frogs crawling across the mossy lawn, the vibe is somewhere between Dirty Dancing and The Shining, depending on how paranoid you’re feeling. AMC and Channel sci-fi drama Humans is being remade in China after Endemol Shine China partnered with local producer Croton Media.
Chinese stars Ray Ma and Stephy Qi are fronting the local Mandarin-language remake, which has just begun filming in Shanghai. There is no broadcaster attached.
Kudos, which produces the UK version of the drama, and Matador, which produced the original Swedish series, are also working on the series. Humans is set in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a ‘Synth’ – a highly-developed robotic servant eerily similar in appearance to human beings.
Set in the fictional year 2035, when technology, in particular artificial intelligence will infiltrate and influence every aspect of daily existence, the series will keep the sinister, thrilling and emotional narrative of the original English-language version, while exploring the rapidly evolving relationship between humanity and technology, asking what it really means to be human.

Things just got more real with Dark/Web. The Lrm Exclusive digital series just locked down Ghost Rider himself, Gabriel Luna, to partake in “Zero." Luna definitely made his presence felt on the most reason season of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and was also the star of El Rey's Matador. His Dark/Web episode, "Zero," is one of the anthology portions of the show.
For those confused by what we mean by “anthology portion,” it’s probably best to recap the unique format that Dark/Web utilizes.
Dark/Web's structure combines the classic, standalone stories traditionally found in an anthology series with an overarching, season-long mystery. Each episode consists of two parts:
A portion of the serialized tale that continues week after week. A stand-alone horror/sci-fi short, presented in the form of stories that Molly left behind; each written and directed by a different filmmaker.
As mentioned above, Luna will star in “Zero,...

Thanks to Canadagraphs, we have some new pics from the Vancouver set of The CW's Supergirl, one of which gives us a first look at the latest small-screen incarnation of classic Superman baddie, Mr. Myxlplyx. The character will be played by British actor Peter Gadiot (Once Upon a Time, Fresh Meat, Matador), who will guest-star in an upcoming episode. As you can see, this incarnation of Myx looks nothing like the impish comic book version, but perhaps he'll also have a "true form" on the show. Supergirl Season 2 returns with the Kevin Smith-directed "Supergirl Lives" on Monday, January 23rd at 8pm.

In the tense border drama “Transpecos,” the line between right and wrong blurs as the heat rises in the desert. The film follows three border patrol agents — the rookie Benjamin Davis (Johnny Simmons), the seasoned pro Lance Flores (Gabriel Luna), and the callous veteran Lou Hobbs (Clifton Collins Jr.) — who man a check point on a remote highway. One day on a routine stop, Hobbs examines a suspicious vehicle, but when the car tries to take off Hobbs shoots the passenger as they discover a trunk filled with cocaine. Before they can call it in, Davis pulls a gun on the two agents and claims that he must smuggle the drugs to a drop-off point or else his family will die. Drawn into a violent journey, all three must contend with dark secrets, malleable morality, and a potentially terrible fate. Watch an exclusive clip from the film below.

It is perhaps something of an understatement to suggest that there is little love lost between Hollywood and North Korea. If the events of last year, surrounding the controversial film The Interview, caused a stir within the totalitarian regime, then the project currently being developed by Daniel Dae Kim – Escaping North Korea – will certainly ruffle some repressive feathers also, since it tells the very real story of Korean-American hero, Mike Kim.
The film will be the adaptation of Escaping North Korea: Defiance And Hope In The World’s Most Repressive Country – written by Mike Kim, and published in 2008. The fascinating memoir details how he gave up his life in the Chicago business community, and relocated to China in 2003. Living close to the North Korean border, he posed as a student of North Korean Taekwondo for four years, and quietly founded Crossing Borders.

"We're gonna eat you guys." A cannibal horror comedy set on Halloween night, Gravy has been slated for an October 2nd limited theatrical release and an October 6th Blu-ray, DVD, and VOD release from Shout! Factory. If you're hungry for a taste of this new film, the official trailer has been revealed.
Equally funny and frightening, doused in blood, and featuring plenty of toe-curling moments (including a cheese grater to the face snippet), the trailer for Gravy should place this film prominently on the watch list of horror hounds looking for a unique melding of Halloween, blood-splattered horror comedy, and cannibalistic scares.
"An irreverent, daring and wickedly-fun horror comedy, Gravy walks a perfect line of tension and release, laughs and scares. It’s Halloween night. A trio of costumed misfits with very special dietary requirements seizes a Mexican cantina and force the staff to engage in a late night of gluttony.

The original action drama series, Matador, which launched on El Rey Network in July, will not return for a second season. The show was created by Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman, and ended its 13 episode run in October. Despite initial high hopes for the drama – the pilot of which was directed by network founder Robert Rodriguez – low international sales apparently played a significant part in the network’s decision not to renew. In a statement regarding the cancellation, El Rey Network explained its choice.
“Ultimately, it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level – creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes. We want to thank everyone involved, from the extraordinarily talented cast and crew to the amazing production team. We appreciate all that they have...

"Matador" is no more. Robert Rodriguez's cable channel El Rey Network has made its first major cancellation, after declining to pick up the spy series "Matador" for a second season. After premiering in in July, the 13-episode first season aired its final episode in October, according to Deadline. "Matador" starred Gabriel Luna as a DEA agent who goes undercover as a pro soccer player. The series was created by the former writing team of Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman (the "Transformers" films, "Amazing Spider-Man 2," "Star Trek Into Darkness"). Rodriguez directed the premiere episode. "Matador" also starred Nicky Whelan, Neil Hopkins, Alfred Molina and Tanc Sade. "Ultimately it was a business decision but to be clear, we were very proud of the series on every level-creatively it hit the mark and we are gratified that it celebrated diversity in front of the cameras and behind the scenes," reads a press release from El Rey.

The El Rey network has cancelled its action-drama series "Matador" after one season. Gabriel Luna starred in the show as Tony Bravo, a soccer player who uses his position of access to powerful people around the globe to pull off his other job - being an undercover agent for the CIA.
The news comes as a minor surprise as the show was already picked up for a second season before it premiered in July. However, and despite performing well in the U.S., the series was a dud internationally and so the network has opted to axe it.
