Streaming service Max offers content from HBO, Discovery Channel, Cartoon Network, Warner Bros Pictures and other Warner Bros Discovery-owned brands.
Sling TV customers have access to HBO’s multiplex of channels once again after the Echostar-owned streaming service announced a deal to offer Max to its subscribers.
Starting this week, Sling TV customers can purchase the ad-free version of Max for $17 per month, unlocking access to hit shows and movies like “Game of Thrones,” “Succession,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “Real Time with Bill Maher,” “Friends,” “Hacks,” “The Penguin,” “The Big Bang Theory” and more.
The $17 per month that Sling TV charges for Max is the same price that customers would pay if they purchase Max directly from the service, but with one important difference: Those who purchase Max through Sling will also get streaming access to eight HBO linear channels, just as they would if they purchased HBO via cable or satellite.

Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the USA” has long been a staple of naturalization ceremonies for immigrants to the United States, but John Oliver thinks it’s time for a change. So, will the help of Will Ferrell, he’s created an alternative.
To close out his show on Sunday night, Oliver reflected on his own immigration process to the U.S., which indeed ended with a music video for Greenwood’s song. The presence of it got Oliver curious, so he dug into the details of how it came to be a piece of the ceremony.
As it turns out, the government began using it on their own, and when Greenwood found out, his team forced the Uscis into a settlement deal that now sees the singer get $700 a year for use of the song. Naturally, Oliver mocked the move, and most of Greenwood’s attempts to monetize,...

Jd Vance recently stopped by an event in Pittsburgh while on the campaign trail and, according to the evangelical preacher leading that event, it was because God sent a hurricane to derail Vance’s other plans. Yes, seriously. And that was a bit much even for John Oliver, who delights in ridiculousness.
During Sunday’s new episode of “Last Week Tonight,” Oliver spent most of his first segment going off on Jd Vance once again, this time for his “f—kboy deflections” and lies during the Vice Presidential debate last week. But Oliver also took issue with Lance Wallnau, the preacher and televangelist hosting “The Courage Tour” nationwide.
At a recent stop in Pittsburgh, Wallnau told the crowd that Vance would be joining them because God intervened on Vance’s planned visit to North Carolina.
“I’ll be honest with you, I take that as a direct act of God,...

John Oliver is speaking out on the decision to delay Last Week Tonight segments going to YouTube.
In an interview with The Interview podcast from The New York Times, the late-night host criticized HBO for the rollout change. For the series’ 11th season, the premium cable outlet announced they are now holding back segments from the show for a few days from YouTube after they premiere. Audiences were previously able to watch the show’s main story on YouTube the morning after an episode aired.
“It’s massively frustrating to me. I was not happy with it at all,” Oliver said of the decision.
He further explained, “What I love about having the show on YouTube is that we can reach beyond HBO subscribers. That feels really important to me. I really, really appreciate the fact that they do that. I would rather they did it straight after the show...

John Oliver still isn’t happy about HBO’s decision to no longer drop YouTube clips of “Last Week Tonight” on Mondays.
“It’s massively frustrating to me. I was not happy with it at all,” Oliver said during a recent interview with New York Times podcasts. “I hope it works because I worry about it … It remains to be proven to me this was necessary.”
Since the premiere of “Last Week Tonight” in 2014, the series has posted its A story — which involves Oliver’s deep dive into the big story of the week — on YouTube the day after the show’s Sunday night episode. This strategy helped the series gain its large following over the past decade. But starting in February of this year, HBO announced it would instead be dropping these clips on Thursdays moving forward.

Anyone bored by this year’s Emmy winners just hasn’t been paying attention. This was a revolution. The idea that “Shōgun” could enter the drama race and then break the history books with 18 wins was astounding — and sure didn’t seem possible even a year ago. The fact that “Hacks,” in its third season, could upset “The Bear” — even as the incumbent still smashed the record for most wins for a comedy in a single year — has changed the balance of power in that race.
And then there was perhaps the biggest shift of the night: “The Traitors” ending the “RuPaul’s Drag Race” streak in reality competition series. That’s a field where “The Amazing Race” won 10, “Drag Race” won five and “The Voice” has four — so there wasn’t much movement in the category. “The Traitors” has at least busted things up, making for a more dynamic playing field.

John Oliver returned after his latest Emmys win on Sunday night, and to kick off the show, he went right for the throat of vice presidential hopeful Jd Vance, and his claims about pets being eaten by migrants in Springfield, Ohio.
Acknowledging that he was on hiatus during the first presidential debate between Kamala Harris and Donald Trump, Oliver noted that he still wanted to touch on Trump’s performance — particularly when he echoed Vance’s claims about pets being eaten.
“Can you even remember a time where something like that would’ve been disqualifying? Because I can’t anymore,” Oliver mourned after playing a clip.
That said, the host was more upset with Trump’s running mate than Trump himself on this one, mostly because Jd Vance — “a man who always looks like a yassified chipmunk,” he joked — has not only doubled down on perpetuating these baseless claims, but...

The new horror and science fiction anthology, “Deepest, Darkest,” has added yet another cast mate to its already stellar lineup of genre heavyweights.
Rahul Kohli, a beloved member of Mike Flanagan’s Flanaverse and essential teammate in the crime-solving “iZombie” series, has officially joined the star-studded cast of “Deepest, Darkest,” a new horror anthology from writer and director Marc Bernardin and actor Tiffany Smith.
“‘Deepest Darkest’ is an exciting project combining all my favorite genres and my favorite people. Joining this project was a no-brainer for me,” says Kohli, expressing his enthusiasm early in the process to Variety.
Kohli joins the previously announced cast of Smith (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”), Rosario Dawson, Ernie Hudson (“Ghostbusters”), Yetide Badaki (“American Gods”), Phil Lamarr and “Quantum Leap” stars Raymond Lee and Caitlin Bassett.

Perhaps the toughest call for an awards producer is figuring out when to start playing a winner off the stage. On Sunday night’s 76th Emmys, “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver” had just won yet another prize — its second in a row for scripted variety series — and the host’s speech had started to go long.
A flustered Oliver had already botched his son Hudson’s name (calling him “Husband” by mistake) and then started to talk about his dog. For the Jesse Collins Entertainment team, it felt like a good time to wrap things up. So, they kicked the playoff music into high gear.
And then, Oliver revealed the kicker, as the orchestral music got louder: The dog had just died.
“I was like, ‘oh, take the music down!’” executive producer Jesse Collins laughs about that unexpected moment. “You’re just trying to make a call. And then...

Even before the Emmys began Sunday, there wasn’t much question about which media conglomerate would end the night with the most awards. Led by 14 Creative Arts wins for Shogun, Disney had essentially an insurmountable lead in terms of awards won.
The only question was how much the Mouse House would run up the score. The answer: Quite a bit.
Led by Shogun and The Bear — which each won four awards at Sunday’s awards and set records for wins by a drama (18) and comedy (11) in a single year — FX-produced programs led all platforms with 36 wins at the 76th Emmy Awards. By itself, FX would have put Disney into first place among media conglomerates, but the company also took home 24 other awards for a record-breaking total of 60.
Netflix finished a distant second with 24 total wins across Sunday’s ceremony and last week’s Creative Arts awards — two more than at the 75th Emmys.

Walking the red carpet of the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, comedian John Oliver told Variety‘s Marc Malkin that Donald Trump likely would not accept a loss in this year’s upcoming election.
“It’s gonna be very, very close,” Oliver said. “And if Trump loses, he’s not going to accept it, making the fact that it’s going to be that close even more ridiculous.”
Oliver, who hosts “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” has publicly stated his disapproval of the former president in the past.
On June 16, the British-American comic warned voters of how a second presidential term under Trump would hold serious long-term effects. He detailed the Republican candidate’s “hateful ideologies” and the detrimental impact of Project 2025.
“If you’re thinking: ‘Ok, Trump’s making big, scary promises, but he did that in 2016 too and he broke a lot of them,’ that is true,” Oliver...

Is “Shōgun” adding more Emmy hardware to its historic haul? Will “The Bear” break its own record? Those are the big questions heading into the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will be broadcast live coast-to-coast from Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. Est/5 p.m Pst on ABC.
Hosted by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy, the main ceremony caps off a television year dominated by “Shōgun,” which already set a record for most Emmys by a drama series in a single year when it nearly swept the Creative Arts Emmys with 14. The FX drama, led by Anna Sawai and Hiroyuki Sanada, will attempt to beef up its overall take when it competes with eight nominations in six top categories: drama series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, writing and directing. TheWrap’s awards guru Steve Pond boldly predicts “Shōgun” will go six for six on Sunday.

It’s television’s biggest night, and it’s posed to be a record-breaking one if contenders like “Shōgun” and “The Bear” continue expected sweeps.
The way of things was signaled at the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys September 7 and 8 when “Shōgun” broke records grabbing 14 trophies, sweeping every category except the main title theme and original score. “Shōgun” took casting, cinematography, period costumes, editing, period/fantasy production design, period/fantasy hairstyling, main title design, non-prosthetic period/fantasy/sci-fi makeup, prosthetic makeup, sound editing, sound mixing, special visual effects, and stunt performance, and broke a record previously held by “Game of Thrones.”
Tonight, the FX drama is nominated for Best Drama series, among a slew of acting nominations where it looks to continue its stunning run.
On the comedy side, defending champ “The Bear,” also FX, will take on the third season of Max’s “Hacks,” among other contenders like “Abbott Elementary,” and...

I hope you have your brooms ready, Emmy fans, because we’re due for a trio of major sweeps at the 76th Primetime ceremony on Sunday night.
FX’s historical drama “Shōgun,” FX’s cooking comedy “The Bear” and Netflix’s psychological limited series “Baby Reindeer” are all expected to add five more Emmys to their individual tallies which, when factoring in last weekend’s Creative Arts, would bring “Shōgun” up to 19, “The Bear” up to 12 and “Baby Reindeer” up to seven. In all, 25 categories will be doled out on September 15 in drama, comedy, limited/movie, reality and variety. Read on for the 2024 Emmy predictions by show.

John Oliver isn’t a man who wants to overthrow democracy, but he definitely would commit voter fraud if a really, really fun “I Voted” sticker was involved.
Returning from hiatus on Sunday night, Oliver kicked off “Last Week Tonight” by highlighting contests held in various states, in which people got to submit new designs for said sticker. Michigan revealed nine winners, and there was one in particular that caught Oliver’s eye.
It came from Jane Hynous, a middle school student, who drew a very muscular wolf ripping off a shirt while standing in front of the American flag and below the words “I voted.”
“Yes. Everything about that is perfect. The line work, the kinetic energy of the shirt being ripped off, the wolf’s head thrown back in patriotic ecstasy at the concept of democracy,” Oliver praised. “I know this is not the point, but I would...

Only four shows were submitted to the Emmys for consideration in Best Variety Scripted Series, and the two nominees that emerged were “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Saturday Night Live.” “Last Week Tonight” came out victorious in their last head-to-head match-up. Can underdog “SNL” exact revenge in 2024?
This is only the second time “Last Week Tonight” and “SNL” have battled each other for the top program award. Before last year when the television academy realigned the variety categories, “Last Week” would dominate the talk show race while “SNL” had the sketch comedy award on lock. But “Last Week” is no longer considered a talk show. It was slotted into the new scripted category.

What do you call a man who has 19 Emmys, nine Producers Guild Awards, seven WGA Awards, three Peabodys, a Grammy and whose political satire has influenced U.S. legislature? Certainly not “just another comedian.” John Oliver is all that and more.
The state of American politics for the last handful of years has left many feeling like we’re trapped in a bad TV show, in which twists and turns are so crazy that it’s hard to believe it’s real. Although that could be a gift of endless material for comedians, Oliver sees it quite differently.
“It’s not necessarily a gift that you want, to be honest,” says the executive producer and host of “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” which has six Emmy nominations. “Technically, it’s a gift, but it’s not a great one. I think that the tendency is often to think that it writes itself.

With the exception of a few soap operas and public affairs programs, no TV show has been on the air longer than NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which will embark on its 50th season Sept. 28. And as we approach the 76th Emmys, which will take place just a few weeks before that, it is the most celebrated show in the history of that event. Indeed, SNL holds the records for most Emmy nominations with 341 (Game of Thrones is second with 159) and wins with 89 (GoT is second with 59). And Lorne Michaels, its creator and overseer for all but five of its seasons, holds the record for most Emmy noms for an individual with 106 (Sheila Nevins is second with 77) and has racked up the second most wins for an individual with 21 (behind only Nevins’ 31).

Less than a year after rebounding from having its half-decade winning streak broken by “A Black Lady Sketch Show,” “Saturday Night Live” is in the hunt for yet another Best Variety Series Directing Emmy. On its record 24th such nomination, the NBC sketch program faces three old talk show rivals, none of which have ever beaten it despite trying at least three times each.
This technically marks the first instance of less than five variety series competing for the same directing Emmy, with the last similar case involving both series and specials having occurred in 1993 before the two formats were afforded separate categories. After 2022, this is also the second time in 10 years that there are no new nominees in the mix.

Despite being forced to change program categories ahead of the 2023 Emmys, “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” emerged from that ceremony with its eighth consecutive series and writing wins. Unsurprisingly, the HBO staple is generally expected to experience similar success this year, with the only difference being that its probable new writing prize will be bestowed at the creative arts event rather than the main primetime one.

In addition to getting their respective medals, “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver thinks every Olympian who makes the podium in the future should also be awarded a duck. Why? Well, because of one Australian Olympian in particular.
As always, Oliver kicked off Sunday night’s episode of the HBO show with a quick recap of the week’s highlights, which included the closing ceremony of this year’s Olympic games. But Oliver was more drawn to the story of Arisa Trew, a 14-year-old who took home the gold for skateboarding.
Following her win, Trew revealed that she had asked her parents if she could get a pet duck if she won, which they agreed to. When asked if she’d teach her duck to skateboard, Trew smiled and confirmed that it would indeed be coming with her to the skate park, and that she’d take it on walks.

As we’ve finally recovered from our post-Emmy nominations hangover, it only seems right to take another look at some of the oft-confusing math that went into figuring out the nominees for the 2024 Primetime Emmys, and some of the problems that come up with the current rules.
How many nominees can be in a category? Or that category? Or this category? And why? Let us help!

The first thing to clarify is that the Television Academy decided a couple of years ago that, regardless of how many projects submit for their respective categories, Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Comedy Series will always have eight nominees.

The people over at FX have a lot to be psyched about today.
In a TV awards cycle increasingly dominated by the HBO-Netflix horse race — which, for HBO, technically includes steamer Max — it was the other premium cable network and its Hulu offerings that came out tops among individual programs during Wednesday’s Primetime Emmy Awards nominations.

It marks the first time FX has ever come so close to topping total Emmy nominations, with Netflix walking away with an easy win this year on the backs of its sprawling slate. FX’s No. 2 status among prestige outlets is all the more compelling when you look at the breakdown of actual programs. Its 93 nominations, which topped HBO and Max’s collective haul by just two,...

FX’s “Shogun” dominated the Emmy nominations Wednesday morning, landing 25 nods. The drama series based on James Clavell’s epic novel landed musician and composer Ross a nomination for music composition for a series while costume designer Carlos Rosario was also nominated.
