Art the Clown. He’s a homicidal maniac. He’s a supernatural being. He’s disgusting. He’s amusing. He’s the latest cinematic madman to be added to the ranks of genre icons. And he’s been around longer than you might realize. He’s been lurking around for a couple of decades. His breakthrough moment came with the 2016 movie Terrifier – and we’re going to examine that film… and the bad clown at the heart of it all… with this episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie?
Writer/director Damien Leone first brought Art the Clown into the world with a short film called The 9th Circle, which was shot in 2006.The story centers on a young woman who’s creeped out by a strange clown in a train station. The clown ends up attacking her, delivering her to a coven of witches that are in direct contact with Satan himself.

Over the past decade, filmmaker Damien Leone has become a rising force in the horror genre. Having started in the special effects arena, Leone made waves in 2011 with his short films, The 9th Circle and Terrifier, which sparked the return of the murderous Art the Clown (David Howard Thornton) in All Hallows' Eve and later in his own feature film series, the most recent of which just hit theaters. But before the Terrifier franchise was officially launched with David Howard Thornton taking up the killer clown role, Leone tried his hand at a different set of monsters. Inspired by the Universal Monsters franchise of old, the director brought two unlikely beasts together for his 2015 film, Frankenstein vs. The Mummy, and, unfortunately, the whole thing sort of falls flat.

The saga of writer-director Damien Leone’s signature horror character Art the Clown began with The 9th Circle, a 2008 short which was recycled with other mini-movies (including a 2011 first draft of Terrifier) into a 2013 anthology film, All Hallows’ Eve. David Howard Thornton didn’t take over the role of the clown until the breakout feature version of Terrifier (2016). His exceptionally committed evil mime performance — imagine Harpo Marx possessed by the Driller Killer — remains the centrepiece of an ongoing series which shows no signs of winding down.
Thornton’s Art — a deceptively simple black-and-white clown costume and make-up, complete with silly miniature hat and rotten-tooth grin — stands out as perhaps the most hateful franchise fiend in contemporary horror, mocking victims as he rips them to gory chunks and taking the time to add petty humiliations like slaps to the back of the head to the grosser, gut-exposing atrocities which are his stock-in-trade.

The horror genre is expansive, with many subgenres falling under the umbrella. One of the most beloved subgenres is the creature feature, which makes up a large chunk of horror history. From the classic Universal Monsters to modern additions, there are many iconic monsters to love, including mummies, which is why there are so many great mummy movies.
The guidelines for a film to be considered a mummy movie are simple; it simply must include or center around a mummy. These movies usually surround Egyptian culture, as mummification is often associated with Ancient Egypt and real-life burial practices worldwide. Around the 19th and 20th centuries, many discoveries of tombs and mummies sparked widespread interest in Egyptology. Unfortunately, this interest led to many misguided depictions of the Middle East, which bled into the Egyptian influences on pop culture, especially mummy movies. While some aspects of the mummy movie trope haven't aged well,...

Terrifier 2, the sequel to the successful 2016 horror movie, is making a return to theaters this fall after its surprising box office success last year. Despite being made on a microbudget of $250,000, Terrifier 2 exceeded profit expectations by making $11 million domestically and $15.4 million worldwide during its original run. The sequel's success has not only been in theaters but also on streaming platforms, where it has gained momentum and attention for its impressive profitability. The re-release hopes to capitalize on this buzz.
Terrifier 2 will hit the big screen once more as it returns to theaters over a year after its successful first run. The follow up to 2016’s Terrifier arrived in 2022 from creator-director Damien Leone. Based on Leone’s horror short of the same name, the Terrifier movies focus on the terrifying Art the Clown as he embarks on killing sprees on Halloween night. The sequel itself centered on young...

“E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial” came back into our lives over Thanksgiving courtesy of a new holiday ad from Comcast’s cable and internet provider Xfinity.
In the spot, E.T. travels to Earth to reunite with a grown-up Elliott and his new family. Henry Thomas, the actor who originally played Elliott in the 1982 film, is now a married 40-something father of two.
It’s been more than 35 years since E.T. first came to Earth and change Elliot’s and his family’s life. Since E.T.’s back to check in on his old friend, but what have the actors been up to since E.T. phoned home?

Hey creeps. Ya know what ol’ Xiii really digs? Why… yeah, I guess you’re right, I do enjoy a good brioche… so much rich and tender texture, so bready…so… Dammit, you know that’s not what I was thinking about! Of course I was referring to my ne’er ending love of all things “monster”. So you can only imagine my delight upon hearing that there was a new monster mash headin’ our way entitled Frankenstein Vs. The Mummy! While I will be turning my outré eye upon the film soon, I thought I’d chat up the films die-rector, diabolical Damien Leone!
Famous Monsters. Hey Damien, how in the hell did you come to work on a flick with a rad-ass concept like Frankenstein Vs. The Mummy?
Damien Leone. I was approached by producer Jesse Baget about doing the makeup effects on a project he had in development called “Frankenstein vs.

While Universal takes its sweet time rejuvenating their classic monsters for a new shared universe series of movies, director Damien Leone is beating them to the punch with his own take on two iconic ghouls. That's right, one very scary lab creation will soon face off against a member of the living dead in Frankenstein Vs. the Mummy! And it might just be better than what we'll eventually get from the impending big budget blockbuster.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein and Egyptologist Naihla Khalil are both professors at a leading medical university. Victor's latest grisly "experiment" is the re-animated corpse of a sadistic madman and Naihla's most recent find is the cursed mummy of an evil pharaoh. When the two monsters face-off in an epic showdown, no one is safe from the slaughter. Can the murderous rampage be stopped and the carnage contained before it's too late?
