The Grammys are handed out every year by the Recording Academy, an organization composed of music professionals representing different genres across the industry. For multiple years their nominations for Album of the Year were decided by clandestine nomination review committees, but the academy got rid of most of those in 2021, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large. Scroll down for our latest racetrack odds, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Those odds are constantly changing, so we’ll be updating this list throughout the season.

Not everyone in the industry appreciates the Grammys, though. At the 2021 awards The Weeknd didn’t get a single nomination despite an acclaimed album (“After Hours”) and a song (“Blinding Lights”) so popular that Billboard ranked it as their number-one single of 2021 and the number-one song of all time.

How do we know what music is actually good? Many fans look to critics. Sure, some might label music journalism as irrelevant in assigning value to art, but the reality is, critics do at least partly contribute to the consensus on the quality of music. That’s why, whether it is during a civilized conversation or the most rabid Twitter stan war, an album’s Metacritic score typically comes up. So award show voters must take those top albums more into consideration than others, right? To be a big awards player, doesn’t your album need to be somewhat acclaimed?
Let’s take a look at the past three Grammy ceremonies as examples. Since these are ceremonies with no nomination review committees involved, the results are a more accurate, unfiltered reflection of what voters think. According to Metacritic, anything below 81 is not “universally acclaimed,” so that’s how I’ll sort it out.

Jon Batiste is giving high praise to Beyoncé, with whom he collaborated on a new country music album, Cowboy Carter.
Beyoncé dropped the 27-track album Friday, but she made history last month with the release of single “Texas Hold ‘Em,” which debuted at No. 1 on Billboard‘s Hot Country Songs chart. That made her the first Black woman to accomplish such a feat, according to Billboard.
Batiste, who was one of several collaborators on Cowboy Carter, praised the Grammy-winning singer for her role in breaking down barriers across music genres.
“This is the moment yall, where we dismantle the genre machine,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.
He added: “Quincy Jones told me, as he also wrote in his forward to my We Are album, ‘it’s up to you to de categorize American music!! ,’ which is what Duke Ellington told him. I really believe that is our generations role,...

Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece has had many opening theme songs that have helped the series grow hugely. The 29-year-old British star Jacob Collier has risen to fame from YouTube all the way to the Grammys, earning six trophies throughout his career. While Collier was a Grammy favorite from his first album, “Djesse Vol. 3” was the one to put him on the radar for a lot of folks, earning three Grammy noms including for Album of the Year. That nomination was quite unexpected and launched Collier to a lot more fame, especially as his fusion of jazz/R&b/pop is quite unique and not what many would expect to cross over to the Grammy mainstream. Despite not being a huge commercial artist, Collier might be looking at his biggest year ever at the Grammys with his new album, “Djesse Vol. 4.” But just how much recognition will Collier get?

Onir, one of a handful of out and proud Indian filmmakers, is speaking out about the current scenario for LGBTQ filmmakers in the country.
“There are a lot of non-Indian queer films and series available on streaming and also a lot of queer short films and reel videos being made across the country. Having said that, I feel the mainstream industry and streaming platforms when it comes to queer content are mostly still taking baby steps, and also looking at our stories from a very heteronormative gaze,” Onir told Variety.
“The queer gaze is largely missing. What is disappointing is that it’s largely about a tick mark of having done the right thing — right from actors to platforms and studios that use the phrase ‘but we are already doing one queer story.’ I don’t understand what that means. We are not one homogeneous story, we have many stories.

Yoko Ono co-wrote John Lennon‘s “Imagine,” one of the most popular anti-religious songs ever written. Despite this, she still spoke of The Beatles in supernatural terms, saying they were like mystics who could conjure ghosts. She also explained why the Fab Four had such chemistry during their peak years. Her comments are interesting, considering that each of The Beatles had different things to say about their spiritual lives.
Yoko Ono said The Beatles had ‘a kind of chemical’
The book All We Are Saying: The Last Major Interview with John Lennon and Yoko Ono features an interview from 1980. In it, John was asked about numerous things, but he was asked about The Beatles more than any other topic, including his solo music, his family, and his political activism. After a certain point, he said that talking about the Fab Four was boring him “to death.”

Live-action remakes of beloved animated titles are nothing new and with each new remake comes the endless debate of how closely fans want the new show to follow the original, versus how much of a new thing it should be. The best remakes end up being more like rebuilds, taking from the original, adding to it, and overall making something that feels recognizable, but fresh. Shows like "Watchmen," "Scott Pilgrim Takes Off" and the "Rebuild of Evangelion" movies succeed at this.
Even the "One Piece" live-action show managed to break the curse and deliver a great live-action anime remake. That show found the right balance of old and new by essentially throwing away the individual episode stories, instead reworking important character arcs into new episodes that followed the overall structure of the original series but not their scripts. It nodded at the source material while doing something new.

The Grammys are presented every year by the Recording Academy, an organization composed of music insiders from across the industry. For years their nominations for Album of the Year were decided by secret nomination review committees, but the academy eliminated almost all of those in 2021, so now the decisions are made entirely by members at large without an intermediary to override their choices. Scroll down for our latest racetrack odds, which are based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. Those odds are constantly changing, so we’ll be updating this list throughout the season.

Chronicling what should probably be considered the Avengers Assemble of the rock music world, Netflix’s latest musical documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop, lays out everything that went behind the scenes of the 1985 single We Are the World. It is certainly one of the most popular songs in the history of music, mainly because of its universal appeal and the people that are associated with it. You don’t get names like Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Lionel Richie, Quincy Jones, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Rogers, Bob Dylan, and Stevie Wonder working together to create one single piece of art every day. It is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and Netflix makes sure that the audience gets to see it that way only.

The biggest Grammy Award of the night is Album of the Year, meant to honor complete pieces of work that defined the music scene and impacted the culture throughout the eligibility period. The award has gone to some of the most influential records of all time, including The Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” and Adele’s “21.” While some years are more uncertain than others, this year the category seems to be a two-horse race, although a few other players might sneak their way through as well.
The frontrunners here are Taylor Swift’s “Midnights” and Sza’s “Sos.” Both records are massive commercial successes, finishing 2023 as the second and third biggest albums of the year, respectively. Both have also managed to be career peaks for these already uber-popular stars.
In Sza’s case, “Sos” was her sophomore album and served as proof that...

When director Matthew Heineman and musician Jon Batiste began their second collaboration after The First Wave — a harrowing documentary in which Heineman embedded himself in a New York hospital during the early days of the Covid pandemic, and for which Batiste provided the score — the project was much less fraught than its predecessor.

American Symphony follows the former Late Show With Stephen Colbert bandleader during a career high: receiving a monumental 11 Grammy nominations for his 2021 album We Are (which won album of the year and four other prizes in April 2022) and preparing for a one-night performance of the titular composition at Carnegie Hall. Batiste, by all assumptions, was on top of the world.
But privately, things were much more complex. His partner, writer and musician Suleika Jaouad, was afflicted with a rare form of cancer that,...

Several hours after the gates opened for the Israeli music festival Supernova, Amit Bar and her boyfriend Nir Jorno arrived with their friend Ziv Hagbi, excited for the event. The devoted electronic-music fans had traveled from Matzliah, some 60 miles away. “We really waited for this event,” the 27-year-old Bar says. “It was supposed to be a really good one — really fun, lots of people.”
