David Nicholls’ romance One Day has been adapted for the screen for a second time, this time on Netflix: here’s the trailer.
Novelist David Nicholls has had considerable success as a screenwriter, from penning episodes of Cold Feet and BBC dramas The 7:39 and Aftersun to adapting his own novels Starter For Ten and Us.
His most well known novel, One Day, was previously adapted into a 2011 film by Nicholls himself. Directed by Lobe Scherfig, it saw Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess take on the central roles of Emma and Dexter, alongside Patricia Clarkson, Ken Stott and Romola Garai. It received middling reviews which particularly criticized Hathaway’s Yorkshire accent.
A new adaptation is heading to Netflix, this time as a limited series. The synopsis reads as follows:
Netflix’s adaptation of One Day tells the story of Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew who, on July 15th 1988, the night of their graduation,...

Bridget Jones's Baby finally hits UK and Us cinemas on September 16, 2016.

Katie Leung is to star in upcoming BBC Two drama One Child.
The Harry Potter actress will lead the cast of the two-part 90-minute drama written by Guy HIbbert and directed by The 7.39's John Alexander.
One Child sees Leung play a young Chinese-born woman adopted by Anglo-American parents, who makes her way across the world on a personal voyage to discover who she really is.
Writer Guy Hibbert said: "I wanted to visit a contemporary Chinese city to discover what I felt was the most important story to tell from the point of view of the ordinary Chinese citizen. It is, of course, corruption - as it is in far too many countries throughout the world.
"My story is set amongst the poorest in the city and amongst the richest, the new billionaire class, abusing power alongside provincial Party officials.

Two-part BBC drama The 7.39 could have been your average ‘man meets woman and has an affair’ tale. However, the overall verdict has been one of admiration at not only the amazing acting from its star players but also the script, which took the audience on an emotional rollercoaster throughout its glorious two hours. But again, often overlooked is the costume, in this case contemporary. The story of the female lead, Sally Thorn, played by Sheridan Smith with a wonderful naturalness, is particularly clearly told through what she wears (costume design by Lucinda Wright).
Carl Matthews (believably played by David Morrissey) is stuck in a rut. Tired of his job, bored with his family, he boards the 7.39 train to Waterloo each morning for his daily commute. When he meets younger, sparky Sally on the train, who is engaged to a man she can barely be close to, let alone marry,...

Carl and Sally check in at the heartbreak hotel.
Monday’s first episode left audiences wondering if Carl (David Morrissey) and Sally (Sheridan Smith) would do more than just hold hands as the lift doors closed to take them up to their shared hotel room. This patronising recap serves only to illustrate a frustration with a 2-part drama, put on sequential nights, needing a full two-minute ‘Previously…’ to reacquaint viewers with the events of only 24 hours before.
A sun-soaked sequence where the giddy couple sneak off work to play tourist in London bleeds back to reality as Carl loses his job at the hands of his condescending little oik of a boss played by Justin Salinger. This is a mirror image of Carl’s dismissal of a young, new father in episode one. Yet when he says in frustration: “don’t kick me in the head and call me mate,...

Is a railway romance a good platform for a lasting relationship?
David Morrissey and Sheridan Smith book a one-way train to Excitementville, bypassing Responsibiltyford and Mundaneton in the BBC’s new two-part drama written by David Nicholls. But is the story merely an unambitious cliché of a Brief Encounter replacement service?
Most disappointing of any aspect inside the programme was the decision of the BBC programmers not to reschedule the entire evening to broadcast the 7.39 at its misleading self-appointed time and choose the ironically timely 9pm slot instead. For one day or two, surely the Ten O’clock News could have been delayed due to leaves on the line or some sort of signal failure directed at Huw Edwards.
David Nicholls, author of best-seller One Day, choo choo chooses one train as his subject for this mini-series. The service in question is the daily commute of the 7.39 to Waterloo.
