Watch out world, another Sphere is coming.
Sphere Entertainment, the owner and operator of the Sphere venue in Las Vegas, and Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism announced that the city in the United Arab Emirates will be the home for the second Sphere location.
Details on the new Sphere are still to be determined, though the company says that it will be in a “prime spot” in the city, and that it will be “echoing the scale of the 20,000-capacity Sphere in Las Vegas.”
Notably, the new Sphere will utilize a franchise model, with Abu Dhabi financing the build and paying a franchise fee to Sphere, while utilizing the company’s designs, technology and IP. The new Sphere will also pay Sphere entertainment recurring fees for content, its brand, tech and IP.

James Dolan isn’t going anywhere.
The sports and music mogul has signed three-year contract extensions with the companies he and his family control: Msg Sports, Msg Entertainment, and Sphere Entertainment. All three companies disclosed the new deals over the past few weeks, with Sphere filing the extension just before the July 4 holiday.
Msg Sports owns the New York Knicks NBA team (where Dolan is occasionally vilified by its fan base over the team’s performance) and the New York Rangers NHL Team; Msg Entertainment operates New York’s Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, The Beacon Theater and other entertainment venues; Sphere owns and operates the Sphere in Las Vegas, and also owns the Msg Networks cable channels, which televise Knicks and Rangers games.

Sphere Studios, the production house of Sphere Entertainment that is focused on creating original programming and experiences for the Sphere in Las Vegas, has tapped a Hollywood veteran to lead its efforts.
Carolyn Blackwood, who was most recently COO of the Warner Bros. film studio, will become the head of the Burbank-based Sphere Studios. In her new role Blackwood “will direct Sphere Studios’ production operations to maximize the full technical and creative possibilities of Sphere, and strategically position both Studios and Sphere for continued growth and development.”
Blackwood, who worked with former Warner Bros. Pictures CEO Toby Emmerich for decades, left the studio in 2022 after Warner Bros. Discovery brought in MGM veterans Pamela Abdy and Michael DeLuca to run the film studio. She was elevated to COO of the studio in 2019.

Sphere Entertainment has promoted one of its top executives, naming Jennifer Koester president and COO. Koester had been leading Sphere’s business operations, but in her new role will oversee all of its operations.
That includes Sphere Studios, the Burbank-based production studio that is developing experiences for the Sphere, like its first original film, Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard From Earth.
She will also continue to oversee the company’s core business of maximizing use of the Las Vegas venue, including for original programming, attractions, concerts, residencies, and corporate and marquee events.
“Since joining our team earlier this year, Jennifer’s contributions have had a significant impact,” said James Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of Sphere Entertainment in a statement. “We believe we are just scratching the surface of what is possible with Sphere, and her expertise will be essential as we continue to advance on our long-term vision for this next-generation entertainment medium.

So we saw the 1st project of the Las Vegas Sphere, which is ‘Postcard from Earth’ directed and filmed by Darren Aronofsky on the Big Sky huge format 316MP18K camera. Defining it as an ‘IMAX on steroids’ would be an understatement.
Behind the scenes of Postcard from Earth. The Big Sky camera Sphere=IMAX on steroids
As fans of the huge canvas (=IMAX!), one of the first things we did when staying in Vegas was to go see the Sphere. YMCinema was among the first that write about this very special medium. Before waiting for a movie on it, we defined it as IMAX on steroids. However, after watching Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, we can conclude that this definition is an understatement of this whole insane experience. The Sphere is not just a giant screen, but much more than that. Proportionally, it’s X20 the size of the largest IMAX.

The Sphere is finally bringing in serious cash.
Sphere Entertainment Corp., the parent company of the already-infamous Las Vegas attraction, as well as the Msg Networks Rsn business, reported its first full quarterly earnings report Monday with the venue open, its fiscal 2024 Q2.
The company reported earnings of $314.2 million, with Sphere $167.8 million) overtaking Msg Networks ($146.4 million) as the predominant breadwinner. That being said, Msg Networks provided the bulk of the company’s profits, comprising $37.3 million of Sphere’s $51.4 million in adjusted operating income.
While Sphere reported adjusted operating income of $51.4 million, it reported an operating loss of $159.7 million thanks largely to a non-cash expense associated with the decision to abandon its London Sphere plan, as well as depreciation.

Editor Jennifer Lame’s work has appeared on many of the world’s largest screens this year. Over the summer, her second movie with director Christopher Nolan, his historical epic Oppenheimer, for Universal, had moviegoers scrambling for tickets to Imax’s large-format theaters. And in October, the Lame-edited Postcard From Earth, from director Darren Aronofsky, became the first movie to debut at the newly opened Sphere in Las Vegas.
Speaking to the success of Nolan’s drama about the father of the atomic bomb, Lame says, “I really enjoy cutting people in rooms talking. For me as an editor, I want to replicate that experience when I get the footage.” On the alternating use of color and black-and-white, she says that Nolan and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema created a palette where, generally, color images represent the perspective of...

For those who are not attending tonight’s The Marvels premiere in Las Vegas, Goose — the cat-like alien creature that appeared in Captain Marvel and returns in The Marvels — will tower over the city’s skyline on the exterior of the recently-opened Sphere.
The promo is a collaboration between software developer Autodesk and Marvel, and begins with Goose in its cat form, before transforming with her detailed tentacles on full display. It comes ahead of The Marvels‘s Nov. 10 release in theaters.
Sphere, Las Vegas’ newest entertainment venue, boasts an exterior coated with a record 580,000-square-foot 16K LED display, while its interior features a record 160,000 square-foot 16K LED display.
The Autodesk/Marvel promo was created by visual effects studio The Mill, using Autodesk Maya 3D software (which is widely used by VFX companies) for designing, lighting, rigging and animating the Goose character. It was rendered with Autodesk’s Arnold software.

When crowds gather to watch cars speed through retrofitted streets in Las Vegas Nov. 19, they’ll be looking at more than just the Formula 1 Heineken Silver Grand Prix. They’ll also be the audience — and extras — for Brad Pitt’s untitled racing movie from Apple Original Films and director Joseph Kosinski.
“The filmmakers looked at all the different Grand Prix [races] to see where it made sense for their story to play out and where they would film,” says a source close to the production. “They are absolutely embedded in the event as an 11th team. What makes it unique and special is the blending of a fictional team and drivers into the actual 2023 world championship.”

Darren Aronofsky’s Sphere film, “Postcard From Earth,” is responsible for establishing all kinds of historic cinematic firsts — like the fact that it is the only movie ever to be released in 18K resolution on a screen that spans 160,000 square feet.
But movie buffs will particularly enjoy one first that doesn’t fully reveal itself until the very last 90 seconds or so of the 50-minute running time, in the massive Las Vegas dome where the film just premiered.
The end credits begin appearing in the middle of the screen, as one would expect — or at least in what counts as the middle, if your field of vision is trained forward and not skyward. And then the credits expand out from there, bit by bit, until a substantial portion of the LED screen is filled by the entire list of names of people who worked on “Postcard From Earth,” all at once.
But movie buffs will particularly enjoy one first that doesn’t fully reveal itself until the very last 90 seconds or so of the 50-minute running time, in the massive Las Vegas dome where the film just premiered.

“There are 500,000 gigabytes of data that we’re about to flood you with in the next 50 minutes. We don’t know what that’s going to do to someone’s brain.”
With those opening words to the 5,000-plus in attendance this past Friday night, acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky unveiled his new film “Postcard From Earth” at the new Las Vegas venue, the Sphere.
“Film” is the wrong word, of course, for this awe inspiring, spherical $2.3 billion new canvas that stands 366 feet tall and features the highest resolution LED screens on the planet, both inside and out. Rather, “Postcard From Earth” is a multi-sensory cinematic experience that breaks not just new ground, but every ground possible — just as the Sphere itself did when construction first began in 2019.

“Hollywood’s got lost in dystopian fiction,” Darren Aronofsky said a few days after the premiere of his “Postcard from Earth” at The Sphere in Las Vegas.
The film — a gorgeously photographed history of the planet being recounted to slowly awakening space travelers as an explanation for how they ended up here — is far from the usual cinematic exercise in the destruction of humanity and Earth. Here, humans make the choice to leave Earth and colonize other plants in an attempt to let the planet heal itself, a concept in keeping with the commitment of Aronofsky and his production company, Protozoa Pictures, to tell stories dreaming of a better future.
“There’s amazing people doing amazing things, thinking about amazing solutions,” Aronofsky said. “And I think as storytellers, it’s important for us to lean into some of these futures. They don’t have to be perfect futures, but they...

When it comes to how big a movie experience can get, Sphere has answered that question once and for all: The sky is the limit. The first film to play in the enormous, immersive new space in Las Vegas, Darren Aronofsky’s “Postcard From Earth,” has plenty of blue-screen, so to speak — that is, vast skies that stretch to fill the dome that towers 366 feet over the venue’s floor level. The 50-minute movie takes you into the reaches of space, too, with a wrap-around science-fiction narrative that is apropos for Sphere’s wrap-around screen. But “let’s get small” is an operative motif, too, as the proprietary Big Sky cameras zoom in on objects as tiny as a praying mantis.
Aronofsky’s films always have a lot more on their minds than bedazzlement, and “Postcard From Earth” is no exception, as it turns out the journey by a pair...

If they really do make a “Twister” sequel, they have to make it for The Sphere.
You’ve likely heard about The Sphere from the surprising number of U2 fans in your social media feeds last week, all of whom seemed to attend the band’s concerts that kicked off its Vegas residency and all of whom captured absolutely bonkers video of Vegas’ latest stab at advancing the use of light and electricity to defeat the natural world.
In keeping with Vegas’ unrivaled skill at mixing the high and the low, this next weekend it was filmmaking auteur Darren Aronofsky’s turn, with his 50-minute film “Postcard from Earth,” in which narrators explain to two floating space travelers why they were put into a years-long slumber. The story is purposefully slight; it’s a peg upon which to hang some of the most ravishing images in cinema, including a sequence...

Welcome to Earth in 500,000 gigabytes.
On Friday night, Darren Aronofsky’s newest film, Postcard From Earth, had its world debut at The Sphere in Las Vegas, and it’s not hyperbole to say that it’s unlike any movie you’ve ever seen. For starters, it’s the first time anyone has ever seen images in 18K resolution, the acclaimed filmmaker boldly claimed.
“I love planet Earth and I want to celebrate her, and so I think the film really is a love letter to Mother Earth,” he told Rolling Stone prior to the screening,...

An instantly iconic addition to Las Vegas’ skyline, Sphere is not only the world’s largest spherical structure but also a technological marvel whose innovations could offer a glimpse of entertainment’s future. The venue near The Venetian will make its long-anticipated debut Sept. 29 with a U2 residency, closely followed by the launch of the first movie designed for its all-encompassing screen, Postcard From Earth, helmed by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky.
The $2.3 billion structure contains the world’s largest interior and exterior wraparound LED displays. Outside, the LED-coated globe lights up the city at night with ever-shifting imagery. Inside, the viewer is immersed in a jaw-dropping phantasmagoria.
Sphere’s sound system even enables audience members to have different sonic experiences in different parts of the venue, which can accommodate 20,000. As Hollywood explores the potential of LED displays as an alternative to digital cinema projection, sound has remained a stubborn obstacle. Designed by Berlin-based Holoplot,...

We have our first look inside of the $2.3 billion Msg Sphere courtesy of filmmaker Darren Aronofsky. Although the Las Vegas Strip’s newest venue’s 580,000-square foot exosphere has been on full display since July, its interior with “the largest screen on the planet” has remained tightly guarded until this week.
In a video posted via Instagram, Aronofsky debuted footage from his upcoming nature film Postcard From Earth, which opens at the Sphere on October 6th, while sitting in the stands. In the accompanying caption, the filmmaker revealed his team was testing the sound mix on the venue’s 160,000 speakers while taking in a sweeping visual on the “largest screen on the planet” boasting an 18k, 60 frames-per-second display.
“My iphone can’t come close to capturing the definition on the screen,” he shared about his half-petabyte, seven continent-spanning project. “At times you forget where you are and you’re transported...

In a preview of an experience we’ll all be likely hearing a lot about in coming months, Darren Aronofsky has posted the first video from inside The Sphere in Las Vegas, and it’s pretty impressive.
For those who don’t know, the Sphere is billed by Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp., which built it, as a “next- generation entertainment medium,” with a screen the size of four football fields that wraps up, over, and around the audience and promises the highest resolution LED on earth. Oh, and there’s seating for about 17,000.
Aronofsky’s purpose-made film Postcard From Earth will debut on October 6, a little over a week after U2 opens the the venue.
Here’s how Msg describes the film and the experience: “Part sci-fi story, part nature documentary, Postcard From Earth takes you on a journey from the Antarctic,...
